《Endangered》34.) Birth

After Nancy told us of the oncoming pregnancy, everyone was becoming anxious. They didn't know what to feel at the moment. They were both afraid to lose Flora and the babies.
The same goes for me too. In the back of my mind, my nightmare still plagued me. What if I were to lose them all? Then I'd have nothing left worth life itself.
I opened the door slightly seeing Flora watching tv that I put in the room for her. "How are you feeling?"
She looked from me to her stomach. "They're going to come today. I know it."
I was immediately by her side. "Are you hurting?"
"No, I just have this feeling. They keep moving around almost like they're antsy."
I immediately rested my hand on her stomach and felt the vibrations inside her stomach. They were moving alright. The one thing I did notice was that they seemed to be huddled up on Flora's lower stomach, almost ready to leave their mother's womb.
"Do you notice anything?" Flora asked biting her lip nervously.
I felt a small kick to my hand then locked eyes with Flora. "I think they'll be ready to come out tonight."
After that I let Flora get her sleep. I was in the house listening to Flora and the babies heartbeats coming from upstairs. I had been informed that her brother was driving over here fairly quickly. I was in the kitchen when he opened the door and went up the stairs.
I listened to his breathing as he opened the door to Flora's room. It wasn't my business, but I couldn't help but listen in.
"I apologize for not making it to the baby shower. I got nervous," he said while shuffling his feet.
"You truly have the worst timing."
I could imagine them both smiling at the sight of each other. I could hear Aiden walking closer to her. "Are you in trouble?"
"Trouble. No, Aiden why would you think that?"
"Those guys...they're not right, I mean-I'm not right either but I know different when I see different."
"Everything's fine."
"Flora. Is this an abnormal pregnancy?"
"What? Aiden, no."
"Do you know what he is?" He scoffed. "Of course you do. Why would he keep it a secret this long."
"What are you talking about?"
"Dorian and those guys-they can turn into this wolf-man thing. I've seen it with my own eyes. I gotta get you out of here." I heard him throw the blankets to the side and help her up. As soon as heard her trying to get up, I ran up the stairs skipping some steps.
"Aiden I can't leave, let alone walk on my own."
"Their forcing you to stay aren't they. They won't hurt you cause of the babies but I'll distract them."
"Aid-"
"What the fuck are you doing?!" I yelled seeing Flora out of bed with her brother trying to help her walk.
We heard running up the stairs then Magnus came into view. "I thought I smelled you. I caught your scent that night, trying to take a peak." I didn't know how Aiden knew about us but apparently, Magnus blew our cover.
"I know what you guys are and you're not forcing my sister to stay here and breed her." Even though Aiden was a fuck up, he really did love his sister.

"We're not forcing her you dipshit!" Magnus yelled, his eyes blazed over to a darker shade with his veins straining. "You're lucky I didn't kill you that night otherwise you'd be lying in a ditch somewhere."
"Magnus!" Flora yelled becoming sad when she envisioned her brother dead in a ditch. Magnus noticed and eased down. "Sorry, Flora. I overstepped my boundaries."
"Aiden we know you've been out of the loop for years but just this once, you have to walk away," I said wanting nothing more than to see Flora in bed than standing, using up all her energy. Aiden sat Flora down as he marched up to me.
Aiden pushed Magnus away then punched me in the face. "I heard what you did to her. You cheated on my sister while she was still pregnant."
Flora stood up with the help of the dresser using most of her body weight on it. She was scared for her brother if I would unleash my anger on him, but I didn't.
"Dorian." I heard Flora gasp as she looked down at the water dripping down her legs. Staring wide-eyed at her I snapped out of it and picked her up in my arms.
"We need to leave now!" I carried her down the stairs. Jenna was getting out of her car giving Aiden a scolding look.
I groaned knowing this whole family was going to delay us. "Aiden knows what I am and Flora's water broke. Follow us."
Jenna's eyes widened but understood. "I'm so excited!" She squealed as she opened her car door starting it up.
"Where are we going?" Flora asked.
"To a safe place."
"But isn't the house safe to birth the babies?"
"Not safe enough," I muttered closing the door. The ladies gathered the necessary cloths and materials needed. While the guys helped them and piled inside the other car.
Once we made it Flora rolled her eyes shaking her head. "I don't want to give birth here Dorian. I need to go to a hospital."
"You will be endangering every single person inside that hospital if we did go there. So this will do."
Flora admired the waterfall when I carried her inside the very cave where the others and I first woke up to. She wasn't happy to be here, that was a given but the girls and I will try to make it as comfortable as possible. While the guys and packs, guard the area since at any moment half-shifters will smell the babies.
Nancy brought out a wheelchair easing her into it with my help while Zoe and Anna set up a small mattress putting the sheets on and setting up blankets for the babies.
Nancy pulled me to the side looking at Flora then to me. "Tonight's the full moon. I can only hold off the shift for so long."
"You have to try. Stay as long as you can, please. We can't do this without you Doc."
She nodded. The shift would be inevitable for the werewolves. The full moon would show the world their true form.
Anna gestured for me to pick up Flora and put her on the bed, so I did. "I hate being carried around like a rag doll." She spoke as I pulled down her underwear trying to be discreet.

I smiled at her as I held up her underwear and flicked it. She rolled her eyes then held my hand looking serious.
"You're gonna be a daddy soon."
I rested my hand on her protruding stomach. "And you a mommy."
Flora's face frowned a bit as her eyes glistened in the moon's light. "I'm scared, Dorian."
"I know. Me too."
"No comforting words to share?"
"None that are honest."
She reached her hand out and touched my cheek and traced my jaw. "Your honesty is one of the qualities I've always admired."
"My honesty," I dry chuckled. "You couldn't be more wrong. Now that I think about it, I want to apologize for all the times I ever caused you pain. I know no matter how many times I say it, I can still see that you're hurt by my actions."
"Nobody's perfect. We all make mistakes."
"From you, no. From me, yes."
"You have to understand Dorian. Even though you aren't fully human. You've managed to know the importance of having a family and knowing right from wrong. The world is imperfect but with you in it makes it better."
Flora's face scrunched up in pain. She groaned while squeezing my arm. Nancy put on her gloves, spreading Flora's legs apart. "You're going to have to start pushing."
"Already? I thought I had more time?"
"This isn't exactly a normal birthing though."
"Come on one big push." Flora groaned while squeezing my hand. Aiden was brushing her hair out of her face while Jenna was wetting the washing cloth, putting it on Flora's forehead.
I stood next to Nancy. I exhaled then looked in between Flora's legs. I could actually see the top of the baby's head! I grabbed the gloves and put my hand underneath the head easing out the baby at each push Flora did with the help of Nancy.
The baby was almost out. Flora was exhausted as sweat covered her head and body. This was only the first baby too.
Nancy and I doubled teamed as we took turns comforting Flora and tending to the baby. There was a shriek echoing throughout the cave due to my firstborn. They quickly cleaned him then wrapped him up. Flora rested a bit while her mother told her comforting words.
Before we know it Flora's grunting, clutching my hand. She was already trying to push out the next one. She cursed and she scratched my hand as she pushed out our second. Jenna gasped covering her mouth while I looked at the baby, well more like pup.
Flora was about to turn her head but I covered her eyes. "Don't look. I don't want you freaking out."
Her heart was beating fast doing exactly what I told her not to do. "Is the baby alright?"
"He's fine, it's just the form he chose to come out in."
"Form?"
"Our son may or may not have possibly already shifted."
"Wha-how?"
"I don't know. Maybe he was scared?"
"Scared? You sound confused yourself."
"Lycan pups are intelligent. Maybe he heard you and thought you were in trouble, maybe he shifted intentionally to scare off whatever he thought was hurting you."
"I want to see."
"No."
"Dorian he's my child too. I should at least see his two different forms."
"After our girl then you'll see all of them."
She sighed disappointedly. "Fine."
I looked over at Anna who was holding baby number two. He had his eyes open but wasn't making any noises. He had a good amount of fur on him making me proud. He had came into this world in that form as well.
Nancy tapped Dorian's shoulder moving around hurriedly. "I can't fight it anymore. I gotta shift, I'm sorry but you'll have to deliver the last baby. The girls and I don't want to anger our wolves from preventing them from shifting."
I waved them off. I looked calm and collected on the outside but on the inside I was nervous. This last baby will be the hardest one considering it's a girl. The thought of her dying in my arms added pressure onto me. This baby needs to live.
"Dorian the baby is coming."
I looked in between Flora's legs, not seeing the baby at all. "Sugarplum, you gotta push."
She grunted and strained then exhaled. "I can't Dorian. She's just not coming out."
"Fuck! I don't know what to do!" I ran looked around looking through Nancy's bag full of medical supplies. Jenna looked through as well grabbing a shot.
"This should help." She gave Flora the shot, making Flora relieved. I took out the scalpel then put it back in the bag.
Jenna took it back out and handed it to me. "We're probably going to need this."
Aiden put his face in his hands cursing. "Jenna what if I mess up. I've only seen Nancy do it a couple of times."
"Do exactly what she did then. I know you're scared. I am too. But if we don't do something then we could lose them both."
Flora looked up and nodded her head. "Do it. I want to see her." I was hesitant holding the scalpel to her lower stomach. "I trust you."
I cut through her skin, thanking that the shot made her numb to the feeling. The blood seemed to be everywhere but I had one task to do. Once I memorized what Nancy did weeks ago to another woman, I was using her methods now.
I was feeling for the baby and gently got her out. Aiden was already standing next to me, taking her and cleaning her up. My heart was pounding as I stitched Flora back up. There was no sound from Flora or the baby.
"Aiden?"
"The baby's clean but I don't think she's breathing."
"Jenna?"
"Flora's alright. She's just exhausted." I could tell by her faint breathing.
Once I finished the stitches, I rushed to hold my baby girl in my arms. There were no signs of her breathing just as Aiden had said. I spanked her slightly to see if she could react at all.
I opened her mouth and saw fluid coming up. So I got a towel gently dabbing it off and away. There was a small cough then I heard her wonderful cry.
Aiden and Jenna yelled in glee, hugging each other.
"Flora look, she survived. Baby look..." My eyes gazed at my baby girl then to Flora to see her skin pale and no signs of her breathing as she stared at nothing.

8 245Tales of Ordinary, Completely Unremarkable Contractors
"Where life had no value, death, sometimes, had its price. That is why the mercenaries appeared." - Artur Xerxes, in A Century of Disappointment: Memoirs of a Travelling Dwarf It's never too difficult to land contracts for a set very specialised skills in a continent teeming with werewolves, vampires, giant leopards, undead and, god forbid, elves. The difficulty comes when these contractors find themselves suffocated in the dense atmosphere of this world's rigid - and mostly unfair - rules; death, suffering and misfortune await those unwilling to sacrifice to bend these in their favour. In this non-linear plot, you will observe a scarred and deformed farm girl cashing her first bounty posters, a seemingly ordinary barmaid at a tavern in the bustling centre of a sprawling, corrupt city and an enigmatic leader of a firm specialising in dealings any other would consider suicidal. Watch them all take everything to the next level at every available opportunity, and then feel dread at the thought that this still might not be enough to halt the physical embodiment of doom about to do what it does best Please, feel free to review and comment! Any sort of feedback can help me become a better writer and write more engaging stories for you. I used to update once every 3-5 days, but this rewrite is taking much too long...I do hope it will be worth it.
