《The Bodyguard ✔》Chapter Twenty-Six

Seconds seem to get stretched out before my chest hits the solid branch.
I immediately try to swing my leg on the branch as well, and I succeed on the third try. As cautious as possible, I hoist myself on the branch. Okay, now you have to be quick and smart. Don't stretch it too long. Holding my balance as good as I can, I crawl to the trunk of the tree. There, I climb down from branch to branch. I've always been a good climber and my flexibility allows me to be even more so. I reach the last branch, but I'm still pretty high removed from the ground. My escape plan has been a success so far, but this is the part I failed in last time.
I feel my phone vibrate in my purse. It's probably Lucas, but I'm too busy to answer right now. Okay. Let's do this. With a strong grip, I place my gloved hands around the lowest branch of the tree. Then, I jump again. I immediately feel the pressure in my shoulders and back when my legs are left dangling in the air. Come on! I swing my legs back and forth. It's now or never. I let go.
It's too dark for me to see clearly, but I felt the solid ground just fine. First my feet, then my knees and eventually my chest, arms and face hit the cold ground. Awch. I push myself of the ground and check for injuries. I find none. Yes.
With some painful muscles and bones, I stand up. I actually did it.
Somewhere a light appears and illuminates a couple of trees ten feet away from where I'm standing. The light has to come from inside the house. Now I know where Frank is. But this adds a complication as well. I have to take a detour, so I'll not be seen: deeper into the woods than I previously had in mind.

It's almost midnight, cold and dark. Those are not the most pleasant conditions to take a walk in the forest. But I'm too exposed right now. If Frank decides to look through the wrong window or come outside for whatever reason, he'll see me immediately. Let's get moving then.
I'm lucky there are no clouds tonight and the bright moon helps me see through the dark. But the deeper I go into the woods, the more difficult it is to use the moonlight as my only light source, because of the trees. Thank God the smartphone has been invented. I zip my purse out of my jacket and search for my phone. Lucas has send me a message: Parked not far from your home. Are you coming? I quickly answer: On my way.
I use my cellphone's flashlight and get going. At first, I had to concentrate on walking, but it quickly became more easy and my thoughts wandered off. I had no idea more girls were drugged at that party. But why? Did Vicky's brother had intentions or did he just drugged some girls for the sake of it? He seemed a bit off, but I didn't expect him being the sort of person to do this, when I met him. Then again, I don't know him very well and I haven't been in this type of situation before.
I don't know how long I've been walking until I see the headlights of an Audi, parked at the side of the road. As I come closer, I can make out Lucas leaning against the front of his car. Again it amazes me how handsome he is: tall and athletic, beautiful in every way.
I approach him. "Lucas?"
He smiles and leaves his leaning position when he sees me come out of the woods and onto the road. "The road is too mainstream for you, right?" He nervously rubs his hands together.

I smile back at him and raise my shoulders. "I guess it is." It is silent for a couple of seconds, when Lucas doesn't seem to know what to do. Is he really being nervous? But why? "Lucas, is everything alright?" I say as I take a step closer towards him.
This seems to bring him back to his senses. "Yes. Yes, of course."
He walks towards his car and opens the door to the passenger's seat.
"Shall we?"

The Infinite Labyrinth
(Story complete - Book 1 "Shanghaied", 2 "Shortcuts", 3 "Secrets" and 4 "Sanctions") It is the 19th century, and war smoulders between England and France. Any hope for a quick end to Napoleon's rampage across Europe ended when the Great Gates opened in 1800. For a fortunate few, the strange world of the Infinite Labyrinth offers opportunities, strange descriptors popping in their minds, informing them of growth, and status beyond that of a mere mortal. The materials and power crystal they bring back foster a new age, both military and civilian. Aether-powered Skyships prowl the skies, as all the great nations blessed by the Gates try to turn the blessings of the Labyrinth into immediate advantages. But for Jonas, an apprentice leatherworker, his friend Ira, and so many Londoners, the fabled ones that walk the Labyrinth are distant heroes, seen from afar. They fell short when their Potential was measured, and they fill their mundane lives with distant dreams. One man wants to break the stalemate. The Tyrant of the Dominion of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, has a plan. Eighteen years after the world changed, he will force it to change again. And when civilians are caught in the fallout, the unthinkable happens. Six people, unqualified, forbidden to ever enter the Labyrinth, find themselves stranded in a distant zone, forcefully turned into Professionals. They know little of what that means, but they have to figure out the rules that are now their lot, for they have little hope to escape their predicament otherwise. They need to understand what the descriptors in their minds mean, what each of the strange piece of gear waiting in treasure chests behind terrible guardians can bring them. They have to become Professionals on their own and rejoin the Empire. They will figure out their new lives one way or another. But will there be an Empire waiting for them when the Gates re-open? Caught in a clash of empires and high tiers, they will do what little they can. They will step up and do their best. One way or another. The Infinite Labyrinth is a slice-of-life litRPG adventure set in a real historical setting. It's a hard, crunchy litrpg. Expect blue boxes everywhere, and the system itself is very mathy. It started life as a serial. I prepared some proper worldbuilding, with enough details and background for lots of different potential story arcs, but as I wrote, I realized the main story needs to have a definitive end. So, there are four books in total, for a bit under 1500 pages, plus additional side stories, and even maybe a sequel one day. The Gore tag was added as a precaution because there are a few scenes with some light gore.
8 179Saga of Fallen Kings, Book I: The Revenant Prince
The Philosopher King once conquered the known world, his power seemingly unlimited and his armies inexhaustible. Since that time his might has slowly unravelled, and his once steadfast empire has begun to crack, splinter and devour itself. In the isolated Southern Realms, where even magic has abandoned them, none of that matters. For years it has been filled with warring kingdoms, where as many kings die to the blade as to old age, and constant battles tear apart the land. When one such kingdom invades its old enemy, the King and his heir, Prince Caden, are killed. Unable to accept the loss of his family Prince Arian is broken, and when the Philosopher King stretches out his hand in aid, Arian takes it without a second thought. When Caden wakes from death, he's different. His eyes and soul have changed, and he finds a world filled with friends who no longer trust he's even human. Suddenly thrust onto the throne and indebted to the Philosopher King, Caden has no choice but to keep going - he must finish what his father started, and try to survive the machinations of the figure who now owns his fealty. Meanwhile something beyond death stirs for him, desiring nothing more than to drag him back into its embrace. Author's Note: This story used to be known as "A King of his Own", but after some consideration I have decided to rebrand it. The first reason is that I was growing increasingly dissatisfied with the title. The second is that I have come increasingly to view this story as a 'saga' containing multiple 'books' rather than one long, continuous publication, and as I did so I realized that as I was quickly getting to a point in the story where I wanted the first 'book' to end. This doesn't mean I'm going back on the things I said below - they're just going to continue in the next book of the Saga of Fallen Kings. :) Also, be aware that I do plan to edit this at some point. Though I take care to squash out any obvious errors when I proof-read, and do simple edits in that process, at some point I'm almost certainly going to do large edits that might significantly change parts of the story. Old author's notes: This started as a completely random writing session. There was no purpose or direction, but as I kept typing an entire world began to form in my mind that I knew I had to write about. My plan is to turn this story into a veritable medieval fantasy epic that spans an entire world, follows multiple character and storylines, and takes place over many years. The story has quite a grounded, almost 'realistic' start, but many more fantastical elements will be introduced, expanded upon and become central to the narrative. I have ideas for this story that make me genuinely excited and I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy writing it, and join me on what will hopefully become a truly massive fantasy epic. If you do enjoy this story please consider following, rating and leaving a review. I'm also happy to answer any questions or comments you have.
