The next morning Y/N woke up to a searing pain in her shoulder. As bad as she wanted to take Oxycodone, she couldn't risk it. She sighed slightly while sitting up, smiling slightly at the sight of two ibuprofen and a glass of water on the table in front of her. She also noticed Liza sleeping on the floor near her, causing her to frown slightly. She quickly took the pills before walking over to Liza, waking her up by gently shaking her shoulders.

As the woman stirred awake Y/N smiled slightly. "Take the couch, I'm awake."

Liza smiled gratefully before moving to stand up. "How is your shoulder?" She said while walking over to the couch and taking a seat.

"Hurts," Y/N answered quietly. "But not as bad as it did."

Liza nodded while lying down. "You sure you don't want to take something stronger? It will help."

"Recovering addict," Y/N said with a laugh. "I should probably pass."

Liza nodded in understanding before closing her eyes, quickly drifting back off to sleep. Only after she was asleep did Y/N noticed a boy sleeping in the floor as well, causing her eyebrow to quirk up. She didn't know who he was, but he seemed a few years younger than her and was obviously Liza's kid.

Y/N walked out of the back room toward the kitchen, not expecting anyone to be awake yet. She soon realized she wasn't the only one awake, noticing Alicia in the kitchen as she walked in. Alicia ignored her presence, continuing to make her cup of coffee. Y/N walked past her, opening the fridge in search of something to eat. As she rummaged through the fridge she heard Alicia say something, causing her head to then toward the younger girl.

"I'm sorry for what I said," Alicia mumbled halfheartedly while pouring some milk into her mug. Y/N stared at her in confusion, prompting the girl to continue. "My mom told me about your parents after you went to sleep..."

"Oh," Y/N said while turning her head back toward the fridge. She grabbed a pack of blueberries before shutting the fridge, turning her attention back to Alicia. "It's whatever."

Alicia shook her head in disagreement. "It's not whatever, especially your response to what I said."

"If you knew what I've been through," Y/N started while popping a blueberry into her mouth. "You'd understand."

"You're talking about yesterday?"

Y/N shrugged. "For the most part."

"What happened, Y/N?" Alicia said quietly.

Y/N wasn't sure how to reply. She knew Madison didn't want her daughter to know, but she also knew Alicia couldn't stay protected forever. She'd seen the dead walking and attacking first hand, and soon she'd probably see it more. Still, the thought of admitting she killed someone out loud made her feel sick.

Y/N stared at the girl in silence before finally answering her question. "Someone attacked me and I fell down the stairs. Then they attacked your mom and I-i saved her."

"You killed them, didn't you?" She questioned the older girl.

Y/N moved to stare down at the counter, but she could feel Alicia's eyes on her. "He was already dead, Alicia."

"Doesn't change anything," Alicia mumbled before walking out of the kitchen, leaving Y/N alone.

Y/N continued to stare down at the counter, feeling a lone tear stream down her face. She quickly wiped it away before looking back up, grabbing a handful of berries and throwing the rest back into the fridge. She then walked to the back of the house, noticing Nick and the boy from earlier standing out in the yard. She went out to join them, finishing her food on the way.

As she walked out the two boys turned to look at her, Nick giving her a small smile while the other simply stared at her.

"I'm Y/N," She said while addressing the younger boy. "Nick and I were best friends back in high school."

"Chris," He said, finally giving her a slight smile. "Travis is my dad."

Y/N nodded, and soon the three turned to focus on the woman that had tried to attack Alicia last night. She was moaning, her arm sticking out through the fence. It made her sad to see the woman suffering, although by now the woman probably didn't realize she was. She was dead after all. At least that's what Y/N assumed.

After awhile Chris walked inside, leaving Y/N alone with her ex best friend. "Hey, I'm sorry for texting you," Nick said, breaking Y/N's focus away from the woman.

"I'm not," Y/N replied.

Nick laughed slightly at her reply. "And why is that? My whole family, like, hates you. No offense."

"And who's fault is that?" Y/N replied harshly, causing Nick to turn his head away from the girl while gulping slightly. Y/N sighed gently before continuing. "Sorry...I didn't mean that."

"It's true," Nick shrugged. "I'm sorry they think of you that way. If I told them the truth they probably wouldn't believe me now, though."

Y/N nodded. "Yeah, I know. It's whatever. As soon as this stuff dies down I'll be outta your hair."

"You think this is gonna die down?"

Y/N stared ahead, once again focusing in on the woman trying to get through the back gate. "I have no fucking idea."

Night came quickly. Earlier in the day the sick woman's husband had come home, and Y/N watched as the military blew her head off. They were stuck here now. There were gates up and military vehicles patrolling the streets. Y/N spent most of the day on her own, Liza occasionally coming to check on her. Alicia wouldn't give Y/N the time of day, and both Travis and Madison seemed preoccupied. Nick talked to her every so often, along with Chris. Y/N was fine with being alone, though. After all she had gotten pretty used to it.

Now she sat out on the roof, staring out at the horizon. There wasn't much of anything to see, especially at night. The whole city was dark, leaving what was out there to the imagination. It seemed as if where they were was the only place with power. Eventually she felt her eyes begin to grow tired, and she leaned back gently, placing her hands beneath her head while slowly closing her eyes. She didn't mind sleeping outside. It wasn't like she was exactly welcomed in the Clark household anyway.

Y/N woke up early the next morning to the sound of gunshots. She shot up quickly, blinking away the sleepiness as her eyes scanned outside the perimeter. She couldn't see where they were coming from, but she assumed it was the military cleaning up the streets outside. The thought saddened her, but she tried to push the feeling away. If this was the new normal then she'd just have to deal with it.

Y/N slowly made her way down from the roof, stepping down onto Travis' truck before stepping onto the ground. She quietly made her way into the house, making her way toward the kitchen just like the morning before. This time she was, in fact, alone which caused her to relax slightly. She didn't want another morning of Alicia judging and hating her. It just added to the never ending pit of despair Y/N felt in her stomach.

After grabbing another handful of blueberries she walked to the back room. She noticed Liza sleeping in the couch while Chris was still sleeping in his spot on the floor. She carefully walked past them, opening the sliding door quietly before stepping into the backyard. It was a peaceful morning, the birds chirping while the sun rose slowly. It almost reminded Y/N of a normal day. Only it wasn't a normal day, and the gunshots she heard 10 minutes ago were a testament to that. As Y/N stood out in the yard she noticed Nick sneaking out the side of the fence, but she chose to ignore it. He wasn't her problem anymore, as much as she wanted to help him. Wherever he was sneaking off to probably wasn't the smartest, but that was Nick for you. A desperate addict, just like she had once been.

No one bothered Y/N during the day besides Chris and Nick. Liza was out checking on people inside the perimeter, Travis was busy playing mayor for the small section of town, Madison was constantly trying to watch Nick, and Alicia still hated her guts. Being there was uncomfortable, but also manageable. Y/N came to learn that unlike her - who everyone seemed to hate - Chris seemed to hate everyone. He had a problem with every person in the house besides her. Y/N liked Chris, but he was also a little weird. She saw how he stared at Alicia, who was basically his step sister. It was like a creepy crush, especially since he was 15 while Alicia was 18. Other than that, he was bearable to be around.

An entire week had passed by. Y/N spent most of her time on the roof with Chris, who always had questions to ask and conspiracies to share. He was decent company, and she liked the fact she didn't feel entirely alone. Alicia would occasionally harass the two, calling up to them with smartass remarks that they simply shrugged off.

As the end of the 7th day in quarantine began to come to an end Y/N was sitting alone on the roof when she noticed Alicia walking toward an unguarded section of fence.

"What the fuck?" Y/N mumbled to herself while climbing down off the roof. Alicia had a decent head-start but Y/N managed to keep her in sight as the girl inspected the fence. Then Y/N saw her slip through a hole, causing her eyes to go wide. It wasn't safe out there, and she knew that. She was the only person that heard the gun shots every morning and every night, seeing as she normally slept out on the roof now that she'd moved pillows and a blanket up there.

Y/N ran to catch up to the girl, trying not to be seen but also not wanting to let Alicia out of her sight. Alicia would be pissed if she knew Y/N was following her but everyone would be pissed if something were to happen to the younger girl. Y/N quietly slipped through the same hole Alicia had, watching as the brunette crept down the streets quietly.

Bodies littered the streets. They all had been infected, and the smell nearly made Y/N gag. You would think they'd have the decency to clear out the bodies but she guessed that was the military for you. She wasn't sure how Alicia was reacting seeing as she could only see the back of her head, but she imagined it wasn't good.

As she was looking down at the bodies Y/N suddenly realized one wasn't like the others. He had a gun beside him, and he looked like he died as a normal person. She was disgusted, but moved to pick his gun up anyway. It could come in useful in the future. As she bent down to grab the gun she heard voices in the distance, and looked over to see a group of soldiers coming over the hill.

Alicia didn't seem to notice and Y/N bit her lip in contemplation. Alicia was going to hate her even more if she found she was following her, but Y/N didn't want to see her get shot. Especially after seeing the man who wasn't even sick dead on the ground.

Y/N quickly ran up to Alicia, whose head whipped around at the sound of her quickly approaching footsteps.

"What the fuc-"

Y/N quickly cut Alicia off by placing her hand over her mouth and dragging her over to a nearby car. Alicia was fighting to get out of her grip but Y/N held her as strong as she could, pointing to where the soldiers were beginning to come over the hill. The soldiers started nearing, though they hadn't noticed the two girls hiding behind the car. Y/N pushed Alicia down to the ground before pushing her to go underneath, which Alicia quickly did. Y/N followed, placing a finger up to her mouth to signal Alicia to be quiet. The girl nodded, though she looked pissed by the fact Y/N was out there with her.

The soldiers walked by slowly, Y/N and Alicia holding their breath as they passed the car. Soon they started going around a corner, and once they were out of sight Y/N signaled for them to crawl out.

Once the two were standing again Alicia turned to her with an angry glare. "Did you seriously follow me?"

"It's not safe out here," The older girl insisted. "If I hadn't you'd probably be dead right now."

Alicia rolled her eyes while starting back toward the gate. Y/N simply sighed, following behind the girl at a decent distance. She figured Alicia wouldn't want to be around her anyway. Once they reached the fence Alicia crawled through, Y/N going in soon after. As they approached the house Alicia turned toward the girl once more.

"Don't ever follow me again, creep," The brunette said before going to walk into the house.

Y/N shrugged, although the other girl's back was to her. "Don't give me a reason to."

Alicia shot the girl one last glare before entering the house, leaving Y/N alone outside like usual.

She knew Alicia hated her, but saving her had count for something - right?
