《second best // dnf》31. The Locket

All that time, George had stayed.
Sapnap threw a blanket over George and carried him over to the fireplace where I was starting a fire.
Even though guilt and a slight bit of regret were coursing through my body, I hadn't forgiven George, and I wasn't planning on doing so either.
As Sapnap pressed his fingers to the side of George neck, he let out a small sigh of relief. He had a more prominent pulse now and his skin had a lot more colour to it. I swallowed thickly as I noticed the obvious red mark on his cheek from where I hurt him.
A thousand emotions flooded over me. Anger, guilt, confusion. I balled my hands into fists and headed upstairs.
"Where are you going Dream?" Sapnap asked, "Your boyfriend nearly froze to death aren't you worried?"
Sapnap was sprawled out on the sofa which was in front of the fire with George's head in his lap as he cradled his face.
"He's not my boyfriend," I muttered, under my breath.
"WHAT?"
"I found him at Ezra's place, Sapnap he had the locket... he had the stupid, fucking locket Sapnap!" Tears formed in my eyes as I ran my fingers shakily through my hair.
"N-noo," he breathed out, "G-George wouldn't have cheated on you? N-no, Dream a-are you sure?"
Before I could reply, George began regaining consciousness. I swallowed thickly as Sapnap said, "Hey George."
George's eyes flickered up to look up at him and he said through chattering teeth, "I-I'm s-so cold." He squirmed and propped himself up on his elbows before Sapnap insisted that he lay back down.
I was stood at the opposite side of the room, my hands curled into fists.
"S-Sapnap where's Dream, I need to see h-him," he forced out, despite shivering uncontrollably.
"George stay here and warm up, okay?"
"NO S-SAPNAP YOU DON'T G-GET IT, OKAY? HE THINKS I CHEATED ON HIM, HE ACTUALLY THINKS THAT I WENT CRAWLING BACK TO EZRA! I LOVE DREAM! I LOVE HIM SO MUCH AND HE HAS TO KNOW THAT-"

My mouth opened shakily, my whole body trembling.
Sapnap put his palm on George's forehead and sighed, "George you have a fever please just lay back down."
He nodded sadly and burst in tears. Sapnap pulled his head into his chest, allowing him to cry. I still stood there silently, blinking repeatedly.
"George I'm gonna get you some pills alright? Stay here."
Sapnap got up leaving George crying on the sofa. The sight of him broke my heart. So, I gathered all my courage and slumped down beside him without saying a single word.
"D-Dream," he whispered, and threw himself at me, "Please, please! Let me explain!"
"W-why did you go there George, I... I thought you loved me?"
His face saddened, "Dream you have to listen okay? I went to Ezra's to return to locket that he gave me, I wanted to show him that we were over considering I never officially broke up with him. But he was angry Dream, he was really angry," he voice broke as he talked, "He was so angry he was grabbing me and hitting me and..." he trailed off before lifting his shirt to reveal his skin, covered in bruises, shades of purple and blue. He also had bruises blossoming on his wrists. I traced my fingers over his chest and he winced.
"I didn't cheat on you Dream, I can't believe that you would ever think that..."
Tears spilled from my eyes as I choked out, "George I am so sorry oh my God- I-I am sorry, so s-sorry."
He raised his hand to his face and his fingers brushed over the red mark on his cheek and regret and sorrow rose in my stomach.
"I'm sorry George..."
"Dream I love you so much, why would you ever think that I would cheat on you...?"
"I don't know... I should've listened to you. Now George, wrap up you're freezing!" I pressed my lips to his forehead and he forced an exhausted smile as I pulled him closer towards me.

"Oh God," I muttered to Sapnap as he reentered the room, feeling the raging temperature coming off of George, "He has a really bad fever."
"Okay before we deal with him, I think you have some explaining to do."
I sighed and told him everything. About how I saw Ezra with his hand on George's hip and George had the locket. Then, I explained how I wouldn't listen to him but he said he'd wait outside for however long it takes me to believe him.
"But it's all okay now," I added with a smile.
I glanced down at George to see his eyes fluttering shut, "Hey! Hey! I need you to stay awake George, okay?"
"I can't, I'm so tired," he slurred, almost inaudibly, his head falling back on my shoulder.
"You have a fever George, you can sleep later."
He hummed in response, despite his eyes flagging again.
Draping a blanket around his shoulders, I carried him to his bedroom and placed him into the bed. I wrapped my arm round him in an attempt to stop his shivering. His temperature had skyrocketed and he was really burning up. Even though Sapnap tried to convince me otherwise, I felt it was my fault that George was ill, I mean I was the one who made him stay out in that rain.
Interlocking his fingers with mine, I whispered to him, despite him being in a deep state of sleep, "I'm not going to let him hurt you again."

Someone knocked and the bedroom door the next morning and I groaned, "Come in," and Sapnap entered the room.
"Morning love bugs!" he greeted, cheerily.
George cringed, "Ew don't ever say that again."
"Okay, okay!" Sapnap drawled, "Anyways, it's like late into the morning and you guys should probably get up and do something productive."
So, we climbed out of bed, washed and got dressed. The three of us gathered around the kitchen table. I snacked at a Poptart however, George ate nothing. He was still ill to be fair.
George's skin was pale and porcelain and he had dark circles under his eyes. His nose also was a slight pinky colour too. I draped my arm around his shoulder and he fondled into me.
"Okay guys," Sapnap began, "The real reason I forced you out of bed is, I think you guys should stream."
We raised our eyebrows.
"Or instead just post on social media. George everyone thinks you're dead!"
George shifted uncomfortably and chewed his bottom lip.
"And Dream, everyone deserves to hear from you, you streamed in hospital and then just ended. If you want, we can all stream together on my channel?"
George and I exchanged anxious glances until George spoke up, "Okay."
I frowned at him, "What?"
"It's probably for the best," he shrugged, "I guess the fans deserve to know, I mean they think I'm... you know."
So, we went up to my recording room, and set up the PC. We were streaming on Sapnap's channel. I realised I was trembling slightly, I was very nervous about what was going to happen.
I pulled George aside and muttered, "Do you wanna tell the stream about, you know... us."
He swallowed and then nodded, though he looked uncertain. I asked him again and he nodded silently again.
We all sat down me in the middle, Sapnap and George either side of me. I was sat cross-legged facing the PC. The three of us all looked at each other and took deep breaths.
Sapnap counted, "Three, two, one, Let's go." he clicked, Go Live.
"Hey Guysss!"

This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...) I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it! Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time. He reached a hand down to help her up, but Mabel swatted it away, standing on her own and scowling. "Don't call me 'Little One,' Death." She fired back, crossing her arms and straightening her back to look taller. "And, besides, you're the one who told me your name was Death, so what else am I supposed to call you?"
