《A Silence Full of Sound》Chapter 14

Over the weeks that followed I had got closer to Lucas. We had spent days sat talking; mostly him talking and me nodding or shaking my head.

Similarly Sammy had gotten closer to Hailey. I was enjoying seeing her around and getting to know her. As the only girl I could be myself around, and due to her closeness with my brother we instantly became good friends.

I was sat watching tv; some romantic movie about a girl falling in love with her next door neighbour was playing. I wasn't really watching, but I let it play.

Sammy walked into the room. "Hailey's coming over, is that okay with you?" He signed lifting my legs from the couch cushion to sit down next to me. He placed my legs back on top of his lap and pulled out his phone.

Kicking him slightly in the stomach, I signed, raising an eyebrow "Do you want me to leave?"

He pushed my legs firmly off his lap and my feet landed on the floor heavily and forced me to sit up.

"No you're okay." He signed laughing at my discomfort as I rubbed my feet.

"Lucas is coming over as well. It'll be nice for them to meet." I signed over to Sammy.

In the time that I had been seeing Lucas and Sammy has been seeing Hailey, both Hailey and Lucas had never seen or met each other. Although I had told Hailey about him and tried to tell Lucas about Hailey, they never had actually met.

"Question is, do you want me to leave?" Sammy signed, wiggling his eyebrows in the same way I had. I slapped him over the head and stuck my tongue out.

Sammy joined me watching the romantic film until the doorbell light flashed. Both of us looked at each other before turning to look at the door through the living room archway. Sammy jumped up and walked over to the door, his pace pushed. I watched intensely, waiting to see who would be the first to arrive.

Sammy opened the door and Hailey was standing on the other side. He pulled her in for a hug and a kiss before her attention turned to me through the doorway.

As soon as she saw me she pushed Sammy off of her and put the way and headed straight in for me; the biggest smile plastered on her face.

"Hey girlie!" She said as she sat down next to me. I gave her a big smile and a little wave and she pulled me in for a bear hug. She definitely cut off the circulation to my arms...

As we pulled away from the hug, I looked over at Sammy. He plastered a fake look of hurt on his face as he pointed to himself; giving Hailey the best puppy dog face he could muster.

I could see her giggle at him as she pulled him down onto the arm of the sofa and nuzzled her head into his arm. They were both very cute.

And I felt very alone.

"So tell me what's been happening with you?" Hailey said, slowing down so that I could see what she was saying.

"Not much, just been focusing on schoolwork and hanging out with Lucas" I signed and Sammy translated. I blushed when I signed Lucas' name.

I had given him a name sign to make it easier to sign. His name sign tend to base around the fact that he talks a lot. So I made the letter L by the corner of my mouth and twitched my fingers together.

I had thought the name sign was cute. It reflected a big part of his personality and I wanted something that would capture his essence. Sammy had laughed when I came up with it, but told me it worked and seeing as Lucas, probably, was never going to find out, we were all good!

"Was that Lucas?!" Hailey said using the name sign for Lucas. I nodded my head and she smiled. It means so much to me that she was actually taking the time to look and learn what I'm saying. Not many people in my life have.

"Have you told him yet?" Hailey said, motioning to her ear as she spoke. I shook my head.

I hadn't told Lucas about the whole being-deaf thing. It was very early on and I didn't want to frightening the poor boy off before anything's even happened.

I liked him. I really did. And that frightened me.

"He's coming today. You're going to be able to meet him!" I sign. Hailey looks over at Sammy and then back to me. An excited grin appears on her face and her whole body shakes with an excited squeal.

"Ow Hailey. Ri, you're lucky you couldn't hear that." Sammy signed at me after rubbing his ear closest to Hailey. She pushed him slightly and he fell off the arm of the sofa and hit the floor. Both Hailey and I looked at each other and broke out into fits of laughter.

Our laughter was brought to a close when the lights of the doorbell flashed. "Go get your man!" Hailey said whilst pointing to the door.

I jumped up, smoothed down the top I was wearing and walked very calmly to the door.

And by that I mean I tried to hold in my excitement as much as I could because my insides were internally screaming with joy.

I opened the door wide and was met with a brown haired boy. His brown eyes looked into mine and a smile melted on his face when he looked at me.

"Hey gorgeous." He said as he walked in through the door and pulled me into a hug. After we embraced I intertwined our fingers and led him through to the living room, knowing full well what he would be greeted by. The poor guy.

Sammy bounded up from the arm of the sofa and came over to shake Lucas' hand. "Hey man. Good to see you again." He said as he shook Lucas' free hand. I cling onto his arm and looked up smiling at Lucas as he was polite to Sammy and said hello.

Hailey was hidden behind Sammy and I could see her from the corner of my eye. She looked over to me and mouthed 'Is this him?' to me. I nodded and smiled, and encouraged her to say hello. She stood up ready to say hello when Sammy had finished shaking Lucas' hand.

Sammy stepped back and introduced Hailey. When Hailey saw Lucas the smile from her face faltered for a second before very quickly replacing it with the same brilliant smile. In the same second Lucas' eyes went big. Both only for a second. So quick that you could have missed it.

But I didn't.

I've been learning to read body language and faces ever since the accident, and I knew from that one second that something was wrong.

The rest of the day went by as it normally would. The four of us hung out as a group. We watched movies for a big portion of the afternoon. Sammy had made an excuse up for why the subtitles were on so that Lucas didn't question, and so that I could at least know what was happening.

The movies played, but I wasn't paying attention. I was too focused on how they knew each other.

I racked my brain trying to think about their social circles. Could Hailey have known him through previous schools? Maybe they were friends? Maybe they hated each other?

From the look they each gave, it was evident that neither of them expected to see each other again.

Maybe something bad happened?

I felt a chuckle ripple through Lucas' body as he watched the film. We had sat together on the sofa, banishing the other two lovebirds to the loveseat in the corner.

Sammy had raided the fridge for snacks and come out with bags full of chocolate and sweets and more popcorn than I could count.

Neither Hailey or Lucas were able to look each other in the eye for the rest of the day, or would subtly send sneak peaks at each other when they thought me and Sammy weren't looking.

The movie had got to an intense part when Lucas moved his arm and began to get up from the chair.

I gave him a funny look. "Toilet. Keep my seat warm." He said as he headed out the living room and up the stairs.

Sammy and Hailey watched him stand up and leave. Sammy's attention turned straight back to the tv, whereas Hailey's lingered on Lucas' retreating figure.

Hailey stood up from the loveseat and said something about getting a glass of cold water before walking into the kitchen behind us. I watched her walk out the room, kissing Sammy on the head as she left.

My trained my eyes back onto the screen. I had missed so much of the movie that I had no clue what was happening.

A flying pillow cushion hit the right side of my face. Holding the red square in my hands, I looked over to Sammy.

"They seem to like each other?" Sammy signed, obviously taking about Hailey and Lucas.

"That's a good thing, right?" He signed, a small smile splitting on his face.

"I guess." I replied.

"I think they just need more time to warm up to each other. But I think we all could be good friends!"Sammy replied, waiting for me to agree.

I smiled and nodded my head. He turned his attention back to the tv, and the smile dropped from my face.

I couldn't tell Sammy what I had seen.

Minutes had passed by and still there was no sign of Lucas or Hailey. Surely it shouldn't take that long to make a drink or to go to the toilet?

I threw the red cushion back over at Sammy. It hit him square on the face. He looked over at me.

"I'll be back in a second." I signed, standing up. My legs had gone dead where I had been sitting for so long, but I was on a mission.

I walked into the kitchen. On the side was her glass; dry and warm. Hailey was nowhere to be seen. What's going on?

From the corner of my eye I saw movement out in the hallway. Peering out I saw Hailey out standing just before the stairs.

Hailey's features were intense. Her eyebrows were knitted together, her mouth pulled into a thin long line. I had never seen this side of Hailey before.

She stepped back as Lucas stepped off the edge of the stairs. His expression matched hers. He had his fingers running over his very short hair. His eyes flickered left to right. He was hunched over slightly, as if he was carrying the world's largest secret on his shoulders and it was pushing him down into the ground and through the other way.

And maybe he did have the world's biggest secret.

He was whispering with Hailey. Both of them staring intently at the other, looking every so often at the door to the living room. It was then that I knew.

They already knew each other. And however they did, or whatever went down before; it was bad. And it wasn't something they wanted Sammy and I to know about.
