"I just um. I don't feel like it. Um look, I gotta go I'm really busy and have to study." Danté whispers into the phone. He literally told me last night that he hates studying - I mean, who doesn't hate studying?
"But you don't like studying?" I retort back cheekily. Suddenly the line dies and the end dial beeps as I hold the phone to my ear in disbelief. Did he just hang up on me? Did I do something wrong?
I rummage through my pockets and pull out my keys, walking steadily towards the school entrance.
"Ayyyye Casey!" Someone calls out to me. I flick my head back for a second and flash a grin before quickening my speed. I unlock my car and bolt out of the student carpark, making my way through to the residential area.
The familiar beige coloured house comes to view as I swerve into the street carpark. As I walk up to the front door, a nervous shiver racks my body - seemingly coming out of nowhere. I mean, I've been to this house so many times before. I take a breath before knocking on the door. After multiple knocks and no answer I twist the handle and peek in to the lounge - greeted with a solemn silence.
"Danté!?" I peep into the kitchen before making my way up to the familiar staircase - pausing before his door. I knock and once again get no answer. I slowly push the door open, a squeak breaking the silence. As the room comes into view I hear the soft patter of water from the en suite - that's why he didn't answer me, he's showering.
The bed dips slightly as I sit down and start scrolling on my phone - the wifi automatically connecting me from being here so much. My mind wonders away into mindless scrolling and a video steals my attention away from the room - the volume covering the end of the shower.

The en suite handle squeaks unlocked, drawing my attention away from my screen and to the door, my eyes snapping up to scan over Danté's body - his naked body. His slender figure clear in the middle of the doorway. I scan my eyes over his body, chiseled collarbones complimenting his soft, undeveloped pecs. A muted scatter of hair decorates his stomach. I make my way lower and wow...wow...I know his pecs aren't large but something else is. I blush slightly and force my eyes back up to greet his.
His eyes bulge as he realises what's happening - the door slamming shut in my face. He's good at doing that...slamming the door in my face.
Well...who knew Danté was a sexy little devil under those sweatpants?

However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.
