《》Chapter 22: Ear-splitting Yelp

"You should have gone" Kate sung to me as she laid sprawled across the bed in my temporary room. She's been on this same topic all day.

"How many times do I have to tell you I hate basketball!" I groan as I continue to shuffle through boxes. I had semi unpacked into the guest room, but uncertain as to how long I would be here, I hadn't done everything- or at least anything I didn't think I immediately needed. So it seemed I didn't realize how quickly I'd be going on a date- an official one at least. "What am I even supposed to where?"

"Well, he said whatever you are comfortable in- so go with that. Boy, that's like a free pass to wear anything. I bet he's going to be wearing a pair of his obnoxious Nikes, so it's cool" she just laughs. She really does hate the 'popular crowd', the more I get to know Kate I feel there is something behind it. Since I noticed that some of the cheerleaders are crude to her too. There is some past history that I want to get too- but now is not the time: I got to get ready! "You still haven't explained why you didn't go to support your boyfriend. After all it was his first match of the season and first game as captain..." She says teasing me once more.

"Honestly, I hate the game. I hate all team sports. Truth be told, the whole school would have been there so he probably didn't even notice me not there. Secondly he's not my boyfriend- at least not yet. If we do take that step and he wants me to go then fine I will attend every game he wants me at. But until that day- if it happens I'm going to enjoy not spending my evening in a crowded, sweaty gym watching sweaty guys throw around a ball." I exasperatedly explain. She's been trying to get it out of me, so here I admit it.

"So you do want to date him?"

"I wouldn't be going on or stressing about this date if I didn't" I say turning once again to the boxes

"Here" she pulls out a chocolate colour, long sleeve button down shirt and black skinnies. "the shirt complements your eyes nicely and makes the green stand out more" I just gawk at her- what happened to clueless carefree Kate who didn't give a damn about my date? "What? You looked helpless trying to figure this out, it was getting annoying. But if you don't want my help I'll just bury these again in the many boxes..." I snatch the articles of clothings fom her hands before she can do just that. I then sprint towards the bathroom.

After a quick shower, a squirt of cologne and a bit of gel, to style my hair in a perfect mess, I put on my outfit. I walk out the room and slip on a pair of my brown brogues. I stare at myself in the full length mirror, I have to admit. I look good. "Told you that color is good on you" Kate says smirking from behind me. "He's going to be hear any minute now. I'll open the door so I can make sure he'll take good care of my boy" I feel fear rise in me, however as I turn to protest with this the doer bell rings. She smiles at me sweetly, then runs downstairs to answer.

I'm about to follow but I hear the silky tones' of Silver's voice and I find myself rooted to the spot. It wouldn't hurt to eavesdrop a little, would it?

"Hey N-k-Kate?"

"Yes it is I." I can almost hear her cocking an eyebrow right now.

"Uh, hi Kate. I didn't expect to see you here" he replies sheepishly.

"This is my house.."

"Hah, yeah it is, isn't it?" He seems so sheepish and shy it's kind of funny. He is always so confident- do I make him this nervous? "Noah is here right?"

"Yeah he's just upstairs. But before I go summon him, I have a few words for you mister."

"For me?"

"Yes you... What are your intentions for my boy?" Kate's says feigning a parent-like voice.

"Urgh, I-I?"

"Uh, uh I-I what? Speak up boy- this instant!" Kate demands and goodness she can be scary.

"I would like to take him out for dinner?" Yet somehow Silver's word come out as more of a question. That's it, I'm going down there before Kate can cause any more awkwardness and Silver decides to bail.

I descend the stairs slowly, trying to calm my breathing. When I reach the bottom of the stairs and am in the foyer, besides Kate, I look up. I am met with Silver but Oh, Kate was wrong. He had cleaned up nicely. I thought last week he looked good but today he was even better. He wore a pale blue polo shirt that accentuated the sliver and grey flecks in his already icy grey eyes. He wore a pair of faded dark blue jeans and a pair of black lace up shoes. Overall he had a preppy casual look going for him, but it was a change from his usual stereotypical jock attire.

"You ready to go?" he asks me as he gestures to his car. We say our quick goodbyes to Kate, who knowingly smirks and closes the door behind us. As we reach his car Silver opens the door for me again, as the gentlemen he is. I climb in, both excited and scared. But as the familiar smell of his car hits me I begin to relax. After a few moments of silently driving I notice we are heading out of town.

"Taking me to another random quirky restaurant no one has heard of?" I joke

"Nope"

"But I thought we are having dinner!" I whined

"We are, just not at a restaurant" he turns on his CD player and his dad's mix booms out.

After about thirty more minutes of driving and mindless chatter we arrive at a park. Silver quickly escorts me out of the car. "We're having a picnic," he says happily as he retrieves a picnic basket out of the car. Then takes my hand and leads me through the park gates. We walk for about five minutes, silver obviously had already picked a place for our picnic, so I just follow as he leads me. Finally we reach a patch of grass on the side of a hill, that overlooks the lake.

"It's really pretty!" I exclaim looking out at the water. The whole place was lit up by moonlight, since the sun had set during the drive here. You could see the trees reflected against the water; grass and woodlands surround the lake- it was gorgeous. We were the only ones here, making this all the more intimate.

"It is, isn't it? My dad use to bring me here all the time. I learnt to swim in that lake and we could go fiishing and all sorts. Every summer as a family we all went for picnics here and play games of football or soccer. It was always so fun" I just stayed quiet as he recollected his thoughts. He begun to spread out a picnic blanket and laid the basket on top of it. Then he pulled out a set of plastic plates and cutlery followed by Tupperware boxes filled with all sorts of different foods. I was about to offer to help but Silver spoke again. "After dad died it was hard to come here. But I did because this was the only place I felt close to him. Once everyone else left I came here to feel close to all of them, as this was the only place left- untainted from everything. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make this so depressing," he says suddenly uncomfortable with how much he had opened up to me.

"No, no it's okay. I like hearing about you. It makes me see that you aren't just some basketball stud, that there is real person behind the image. So please carry on." I feebly joke in attempts to make him regain my comfortable Silver. After a few moments of arranging the food and passing me a plate full, he continued.

"You say I'm just basketball stud, to be honest I felt like that for so much of these past few years. I've been numb, numb to emotion, numb to people, numb to life. It was easy being what people expected me to be and pouring everything I had into basketball. It gave me a worth and purpose but it also meant I had a facade to hide behind. People didn't want the real me, they wanted this idolised- perfect version of myself and I could do that, I could be that because hell, it's a lot easier than being me." Silver stops there, just playing with his food but I can tell he's not done. There are still so many words he wants to get out. "I know I've said this to you before, but for some reason you make me feel again. As cliche as it sounds you make it okay to be me again. I guess what I'm trying to say is I haven't been honest with myself for years, yet I feel I can be honest with you-" but before he could finish I was crashing my lips against his.

After tasting him two days a go I had been craving him. The sweet mint and cinnamon flavour he had. The way his hands and mouth reacted. The way everything about him seemed to fit perfectly with mine. Just like before our breaths became joined as we roamed each other's mouths. I could taste his tears, salty, but also making this experience all the more appetising. He somehow was able to please all of my taste buds at once. As the kiss deepened we began to fight for dominance- our tongues in a tantalising dance. But he had more strength than me, overpowering me easily. But I didn't mind succumbing to him, he had my every emotion and sense overload. We stayed like this, enjoying the sensory high of each other's taste and touch. Eventually, it became too much, so we broke apart gasping for air.

He looked at me, with so much adoration in his eyes, it was unbelievable. Before long we were at it again. However, when we broke apart this time we began to eat our meal. It was delicious and as we did so we played our favourite game of questions. Constantly learning more about each other's likes and dislikes. Once we were done, we went for a walk circling the lake. "I guess I should probably drop you too Kate's soon.,. If you don't mind me asking why are you there?" It's an understandable question, but the nights been so perfect I don't want to have to explain this to him. I'm still not sure I can trust him enough to know the truth, I wouldn't have told Kate if I wasn't desperate. But that worked out didn't it? But like always I chicken out-

"It's a long story" I laugh. He raises an eyebrow but doesn't question it further. I'm grateful about this, he respects my need for space and privacy.

"You could always spend the night at mine?" It's now my turn to raise an eyebrow at him. "Oh, I don't meet like that- we won't do anything you're not comfortable with, I promise! I'm just saying if you need somewhere to stay, my house is always free."

"Don't you have those crazy parties every weekend?" I say calling him out on his offer

"Yeah, but I've been meaning to shut them down. I'm not Great Gatsby: I don't have a girl I'm waiting for to come and show up one day. So I ought to not have the whole State pull up each weekend."

"I'm surprised you know Great Gatsby." I tease mockingly. Silver's cheeks begins to a turn a pretty scarlet color.

"I'll admit I am crap at English. But we covered F. Scotts Fitzgerald last year. I only remember it because it's the only English paper I have ever managed to get a B on." He says shrugging slightly sheepishly. Aww, isn't he cute.

"Well English is my favourite subject, so if you ever need help I'm all yours" I purpose innocently, yet he winks at me taking it quiet differently.

"All mine. Hmmmm that sounds good- I like that! I think I'm going to kidnap you Mr. Hunt and make it so you're always just mine." Silver states, grinning hysterically like the Cheshire Cat. Before I can respond he grabs me by the waist and throws me over his shoulder. He then begins to run like a maniac through the woods whilst carrying me. I start screaming frantically and bashing my hands against his back. However he doesn't seem to take any notice at my efforts. I'm about to start seriously cussing him out yet I can't help but take notice of the perfect view I have of his butt. What a fine specimen it is. So I do the only logical thing and slap it. This time it's his turn to cry and right on cue he lets out a ear-splitting Yelp.
