《Unfinished》14. Retinuto

Everyone heals differently. Even though Kento finally got over his GBS, only time could tell when he would be able to fully function independently. Months after he was discharged from hospital, Kento was dependent on a wheelchair to move around and he only regained about 60% of his fine motor skills. He worked hard every day to further strengthen his muscles and regain full use of his legs and hands. But there were days that he easily became frustrated and just wanted to give up.
"Kaya mo pa?" Andrea asked Leah when she called Andrea after another exhausting and frustrating day at the rehab clinic.
In the beginning, Leah wanted to just give up and quit, too. Then she remembered that Kento never gave up on her when she was doing her therapies. Kento had always been the jolly, positive one between the two of them but because of his current situation, his mood and attitude changed. She constantly prayed that someday, the Kento she once knew would return.
Being a mother, Nanay could not help herself but worry and dote over her son, her baby boy. While Kento was still at hospital, she would constantly run her hands over his clothes or blanket, smoothing over invisible creases, or fuss over the slightest imagined sound or movement while Kento laid motionless in bed. When he awoke, Nanay would constantly be on her toes to offer assistance in any way possible. She took care of him like he was her little boy again, bathing him, feeding him, making sure that he took his medications, and was well rested. When Kento would cry or scream in pain or frustration, she would cuddle him and say, "Okay, tama na. Hindi na." Like how she spoke to him when he was very young. Tatay and Ate Ai had to distract her whenever Leah would come to pick Kento up for his therapies outside the house.

"Kailangan ni Kitoy matutong gumalaw ulit sa sarili nyang kusa..." Ate Ai said.
"Hindi na sya bata. Nakayanan nya gumawa ng mga bagay-bagay ng mag-isa dati; Magagawa nya ulit yun. Magtiwala lang tayo sa kanya." Tatay added.

To help with his eye-hand coordination, Kento was made to sort some colored beads into small cups. He was already struggling in picking up the beads, it was also a challenge to shoot them into the corresponding cups. Kento's frustration was building as beads of sweat formed on his forehead and he was already thinking of giving up when a small boy approached. Raffy watched as Kento struggled with the activity, his hand shaking. Without a word, Raffy got up on a chair next to Kento and mindlessly sorted the beads one by one. Kento looked at him and Raffy smiled. Moments later, Ate Mara, his therapist, approached. Raffy looked at her.
"What are you doing?" Mara signed.
Raffy looked at Kento then glanced back at Mara and signed, "I'm helping him."
"Okay. But it's now time for your therapy. Let's go?"
Raffy nodded and smiled. He turned to Kento and signed, "You can do it! See you later!" He waved at Kento and hopped off the chair. It was only then that Kento noticed that the boy had leg braces and used a walker. Just a few days ago, Kento noticed a boy about Raffy's size walking awkwardly around the clinic. Over the next few days, Kento and Raffy would see each other at the clinic and Raffy never failed to wave and smile at Kento. Kento would just look at him. Kento was irritated at the way Raffy's therapies went. Because he was a therapist, too, he didn't always agree on how the therapies were taught or done. In his head, Kento always thought, "Mali na naman...dapat ganito...".
Like him, Raffy struggled with some of his tasks and therapies but the little boy hardly complained and willingly accepted the challenges. One time, when Kento let go of the bars to attempt to walk on his own, he suddenly felt a pair of small arms wrap around his waist. In his surprise, Kento accidentally pushed little Raffy to the side. Raffy fell on his bum and wailed loudly.

"Raffy!" Mara and Leah shouted at the same time. Mara rushed toward Raffy while Leah went to Kento.
"Bakit mo naman tinulak si Raffy?" Leah said, assisting Kento back to his wheelchair.
Mara picked Raffy up and brought him to one of the physical therapy rooms.
For the first time in a while, Kento's expression slowly softened. He kept on glancing toward the PT room. Leah followed Mara to the PT room and soon, Raffy's cries stopped. Minutes later, Raffy walked over to Kento and signed, "I'm sorry."
"Ano daw?"
"He's saying sorry kasi ginulat ka nya. Sinabi namin na accident yung nangyari kasi nagulat ka."
"I'm sorry I pushed you. Are you okay? Does your bum hurt?"
Raffy looked at Mara who interpreted for Kento. He turned to Kento and shook his head. "I'm okay now."
"That's good." Kento said, tussling Raffy's hair.
"What's your name? My name is Raffy."
"L-E-A-H" Leah fingerspelled. She saw Raffy at the center when he started his therapies and was intrigued at how he communicated with Mara (his guardian would just leave him at the center and pick him up after his therapies). Leah taught herself a few words and the alphabet. "K-E-N-T-O" Leah fingerspelled Kento's name for Raffy.
Raffy looked at them and smiled. Then, he signed something fast to Mara. "Ah, so that's their sign name?"
Raffy nodded. He gave a sign to Leah and pointed to her, then another to Kento.
"Ano daw?"
"Binigyan nya kayo ng sarili nyong sign name."
"Sign name?"
Mara nodded. "Ang sign name ko ay ganito..." Mara showed Leah and Kento her sign name which Raffy agreed on by nodding and imitating. Then he signed his sign name before teaching Leah and Kento their sign names. "Special names yan na sila lang ang nagbibigay o nagpapangalan."
"Ah..."
"Kasi maraming pangalan na magkakapareho o kaya mahaba. So usually, ang sign name ay parang code nila based the features or personality nung tao..."
"Cool!" Kento exclaimed. "Raffy! Do you want to race?"
"Race?"
"Yes!" Kento said. Mara taught him the sign for "yes" and "no".
"On our walkers" Kento said, gingerly standing up while holding on to his walker.
"You can't beat me! I'm fast!" Raffy said.
"You sure?" Kento challenged.
"What's the prize?"
"What do you want?"
"The loser will try to walk without his walker 5 steps!"
"Deal!" Kento said, shaking hands with Raffy.
At the start of the race, Raffy matched Kento's speed. Then Leah signed, "ice cream" and Mara interpreted it as "Ate Leah will treat the winner to ice cream!"
Raffy excitedly walked toward the finish line ahead of Kento. The audience – Mara, Leah, therapists, and patients – all clapped and cheered for Raffy. Kento slowly walked over to the others and congratulated Raffy. "Don't I get an ice cream too?" he teased Leah.
"Talo ka e" Leah teased. "Iba yung prize mo..." Leah whispered naughtily.
"What's his prize?" Raffy asked.
"Nothing. He didn't win."
"Next time, I'll make you win." Raffy said. "But you know who's the biggest winner?"
"You." Mara said, pointing to Raffy.
"Ate Leah." Raffy replied.
"Huh? Me?"
Raffy nodded. "Because you look happier now. When I saw you before, you always look sad. You look more beautiful when you're happy."

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
