《Who Are You?》III

The look shared between Lindsey and David didn't go unnoticed by Stevie. So, he lied about this too, she sighed, leading Lindsey to the living area of the apartment. She offered him to sit down and a beverage, but he politely declined, so she took a seat as well, leaving a big gap between them.

"Give us some privacy, David." Stevie made it sound like a request, but he knew it was more of a statement. Once they were left alone, she started feeling nervous; Lindsey obviously knew her, but she couldn't remember him for anything. "I'm not sure how to..."

"May I begin?"

"Yes, go ahead." She turned more to him.

"What happened to you, Stevie? If I can call you that of course."

"Well, if it's who I am." She shrugged, then nodded her head. "I was involved in a car crash about eight years ago. Another car just rammed into the side of mine and I suffered a terrible head injury, I'm not even talking about broken bones. I was told that I hit my head badly, which caused me memory loss. I have no clue about my life before the accident."

"You're a mother now too, huh?" Lindsey smiled weakly.

"Twin girls, Aria and Mabel."

"That's great, you've always wanted to have a girl."

"This is so surreal, listening to you saying something like that about me."

"I understand. Why did you completely remove yourself out of everyone's life? I get that you don't remember, but... we could have helped you, at least tried to."

"David tells me he doesn't know anything about my past either."

"Does he now..." Lindsey was fuming, but he couldn't just explode with anger. They would get to Stevie's husband in due time. "Just to prove to you I'm not some psycho..." He took out his wallet and pulled out three pictures. "Here. I carry these with me at all times."

Stevie took the photographs in her hands; the first one was of her and Lindsey, from around the time when they joined Fleetwood Mac. He was standing, facing the camera, his huge afro and beard still in place, as she was leaning against his chest, wearing a beautiful bright smile on her face. She put it away after staring at it for a long moment, then looked at the next picture. Again, two young happily smiling people, with cowboy hats on and to their right was an older man - Stevie's grandfather, guitars in their hands. It didn't tell her anything, she recognized herself and Lindsey, and understood it meant something to him that he had it with him. The last photograph was just of Stevie, back in the Fritz days, when she was really, just an innocent young most beautiful girl any guy had laid his eyes on. Her hair was long and straight, her eyes big and her smile wide.

Stevie gave Lindsey back the three pictures, asking. "We were a couple?"

"We were a couple yes, for about six years, then you left me, because I was an asshole. That happened in 1976, but we've been on and off again until you disappeared."

"On and off again, as in..."

"Affairs. We always seemed to have an overpowering desire towards each other. We could hate each other or love each other, nothing ever stood in the way of our physical relationship."

"How did we meet?" She sat in a lotus position, getting more comfortable.

"Well we met in the 60's, at a party. I sang and played guitar, you heard me and decided to harmonize with me. You told me your name, I told you mine and we said goodbye, meeting again only after a couple of years. We sang in a band together in San Francisco. But it soon started going south, because of creative disagreements and, well... there was a rule among us guys to never date you, because you were the only girl, but... umm.... I really really liked you a lot." Lindsey said somewhat shyly. "So, we left Fritz, moved together to Los Angeles and started dating." Stevie's eyes welled up and Lindsey reached to take her hand, running his thumb over her knuckles. "There's no reason for you to be crying."

"I don't know any of what you just told me." She sniffled, looking at him tearfully. "And I should, those are beautiful memories..."

"They are." He nodded agreeing and continued. "Later, life wasn't easy. We struggled a lot. You worked too many shifts being a waitress to support us, so we would have somewhere to live and something to eat. It lasted several years, despite that we had recorded and released and album, Buckingham Nicks, it just didn't sell and we got dropped. We were so poor, starving until Mick Fleetwood asked us to join Fleetwood Mac. Well, he asked me, but I loved you so much I said, I would come in to the band only if you could too. You could say, we became famous overnight, but the fame brought a whole lot of other problems, which caused our break up."

"You're saying I'm a singer?"

He took a deep breath, studying her face. That bastard, Dave... "You have the most beautiful voice, Stevie." He answered, nodding.

"How was that album called?"

"Ours?"

"Yeah." She just realized they were still holding hands, but she didn't pull hers out of his grasp, as it felt oddly comforting, familiar even.

"Buckingham Nicks."

"That's a strange title."

"Well, I guess, we weren't that creative." He laughed softly, then explained. "Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks."

"Dave said he couldn't remember my maiden name." She said quietly, feeling unbelievable anger towards David for all those years of lies.

"That can't be true..." Lindsey couldn't believe it.

"That's what he kept telling me, then I just stopped asking. About everything. I got so tired of the same answers from him, that he didn't know, always, the same reply..."

Lindsey swallowed uneasily, feeling that he had to ask. "Stevie, when did you say you and David got married?"

"I don't think I did, but it was before we moved to live in France, so about eight to nine years ago."

He gulped, shaking his head. "That never happened."

"What?"

"You two never got married."

"What do you mean? I... my last name is certainly not Nicks in my passport and this ring?" She held up her hand to emphasize.

"Has he shown you any pictures from your wedding? Do you know the exact date of your wedding?"

"No..."

"I don't want you to think I'm turning you against him, but I care about you too much to stay quiet. I don't even know if you are going to believe me anyway..."

"Since you've told me more than he ever did, I have a strong feeling I will believe you."

"He..." Lindsey exhaled, letting go of her hand, as he started rubbing his hands nervously. "He's not a good man. He used to be a roadie for Fleetwood Mac. I don't know how the two of you hooked up, but you did. You claimed to have fallen in love with him and he with you, but that didn't stop him from seeing other women, drinking heavily and um... being violent. I can't even count how many times you have fallen down or walked into a door... Stevie, you were constantly bruised and that's because of him. Everyone; the band, your parents, your friends - we were begging you to leave him, but you didn't and we didn't know why you couldn't. You... he beat you so badly once that it caused you to miscarry." He saw her staring at one spot, not blinking, but he carried on. "Then all of a sudden you disappeared, it's probably when you left for France. He probably promised you he would change and he may have even stopped drinking for a little while, suggested this nice trip to a romantic city to fix your relationship. My guess is then the accident followed and when you woke up, without your memory, he made up this little story of his that you got married and moved to live here."

After a few agonizingly long minutes of processing it all, Stevie spoke up. "But he never raised his hand against me during these past years. Dave has his issues, but he's a good husb... man to me and he is a great father."

"Who am I to judge? He might have changed, he saw it as a new beginning maybe, I don't know, I'm simply telling you of how your relationship was before."

"I don't know what to say to all of that. How does it say Stephanie Evans in my passport then?"

"Maybe it's fake. I'm telling you, Stevie, there was no wedding. You are... well, an icon in music, everyone would have heard about it. I know how much you love taking pictures and during such an important day, you would have taken thousands of them."

"Dave!" She called loudly and after a moment, he entered the living room.

"What is it, sweeth..."

"Are we really married?"

He was listening to everything Lindsey said, he knew this question was coming. He had already dug himself such a huge hole, he was bound to stop at some point... "Not exactly..."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"We're not married, no." He replied, hanging his head low.

"Well that explains it then why you kept begging me not to leave you once I find out the whole truth." She was holding herself together considerably well. "This ring that I'm wearing? There's no point in doing that, is there?"

"Stephanie..."

"What?! You fucking lied to me for eight years! You had me believing we were this sweet couple, chasing their dreams, how we planned to live in Paris and we moved here after our wedding!"

"Baby, I never meant to hurt you." He tried reaching for her, but she recoiled from his touch. "I love you!"

"Oh fuck off and go to hell! I can't believe you're the father of my children!"

"I know I wasn't a good man, but I'm different now! I swear I've changed!"

Stevie wasn't listening to David and his cries, she also seemed to have forgotten about Lindsey, who placed his hand on her shoulder to make her look at him. "I left my number." He pointed at the piece of paper on the table. "Whatever you need, don't hesitate and call me."

She nodded and before he turned to leave, she hugged Lindsey, holding onto him for a second longer. "Thank you so much."

"Will you be okay alone with him?"

"Yes, I'll manage." Stevie led him to the door and locked it once he walked out.

She didn't look at Dave, as she walked past him and to her daughters, knowing they had heard everything, but it wasn't that easy, when David got a hold of her.

"Please, forgive me!" He begged. "I'm a changed man now, Steph, please..."

"How can you call yourself a man in the first place, you piece of shit?! You cheated on me, you beat me, then you dragged me halfway across the world and made up a story, made me believe that our life is near perfect?! How fucking could you?"

"It's all because of the love I have for you!" He dropped to his knees, hugging her around hers. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry for everything I've ever done to hurt you!"

"Have I been carrying around a fake passport all these years?"

"I had to do something... I couldn't have you know who you were, because you would have found your family and they would have taken you away from me, just like HE did just now!"

"And thank God I let him!" Not without some struggle, but she freed herself from his grip. "Get away from me! You disgust me! Jesus fucking Christ, I've been living with a felon!" She knew the tears would come, but not yet, she was too angry right now to concentrate her energy on something else but this emotion. "I want you out of here! Away from me, away from my daughters!"

"Baby, no..."

"Stop calling me that!" She screamed. "I don't want to ever see you again!" She pushed at his chest, making him stumble backwards. She went to the bedroom they shared, pulled a suitcase out of the closet and started putting his things in it. After everything, she shouldn't have cared that much about something like him staying warm or having a clean set of clothes, but she did, because unlike him, Stevie was a good person. Finally, she returned to the living room with the suitcase. "You're free to go."

"No..."

"YES!" She grunted and took the suitcase to the hallway, opened the door and threw it out, then grabbed David by the hand and pushed him out the door as well. One last thing - she slipped off the golden band off her finger and tossed it at him. "Don't you ever dare coming back!"

She slammed the door with a loud thud and then slid down to the floor, dissolving into tears.
