《The Healer | ✔》6. I Hate Him

It was thanks to the chair she was seated on that held her before she could collapse. Her whole body fell limp as she struggled to wrap her head around the fact that the doctor in front of her was indeed talking about her son. Her Reyansh. Her precious life. Black dotted her vision and her stomach coiled painfully, there was a constant beeping sound ringing in her ear and she had to close her eyes and cover her ears to stop the annoying sound.

"Ma'am, are you okay?", The doctor raised up from his chair before rushing to Rivaah's side. He grabbed the glass of water and forwarded it to her.

"I'm fine. Just give me a moment.", Her voice quivered and she had to take multiple deep breaths to stop herself from breaking down. She opened her eyes and leaned back on the chair. The suffocation still had enclosed itself around her but now she could at least breath normally.

"Please have this water.", He said as his forehead ceased into worried lines.

"Thanks.", Her throat was dried and can easily resemble to Sahara desert. She chugged down the water quickly before nodding in assurance; that she's fine now. Even if she was not.

"Should I continue?", He asked and although she wanted to shout a big No and run to her son to cradle him in her arms, she nodded hesitantly. Still afraid of what more was to come her way. Haven't she had enough now?

"It is the cancer of myeloid line of blood cells. In simple words, there's a rapid growth of abnormal blood cells build in bone marrow and blood and then interferes with normal blood cells."

She didn't understand a word. "Is it fatal?", Was her only concern.

""Acute" means the leukemia is a fast spreading cancer, so it can spread to other organs more quickly than many other cancers.", He said and her tears started pouring out like uncalled heavy rainfall.

"Save h-him please. I'm ready to pay whatever amount you will ask me to. But please save my baby. He's everything to me.", She begged helplessly. If she thought she had endured pain and agony before, then it was nothing before what she's going through now. Her every beat is a needle pricking to her skin, every breath is a stab to her chest.

"Ma'am, please don't do this. There are treatments available. It's not that we're helpless. We can try everything we need to. I promise. I'll do everything in my reach. He's an adorable boy and I want to see him laughing again.", The young man said as he lowered her joined hands that were begging him for some miracle.

"Wh-What are the treatments?"

"Chemotherapy, Radiation Thereapy and Stem Cell Transplant.", He replied as he collected all the reports together. "But in his case I suggest you to go with Stem Cell Transplant. He's just a kid and chemotherapy might be a little painful as well a lengthy procedure. In cases like AML, bone marrow transplant is a best option. And more than his father, I think his closest sibling will be the safest and perfect match."

"He's my only son.", Rivaah whispered fearfully.

"I suggest you to conceive again. If it's not a problem. This is my best opinion to you. With the help of drugs and doses we'll prolong his survival rate until the younger one is capable of being a donor. Of course it won't be able to give consent like an adult, but you can try to convince it. We've seen many cases where the younger sibling becomes donor. Or you can call your husband, we'll see if he's a match and he can be the donor.", He replied calmly.

"Not my husband."

"Why? Is he not physically fine?"

"Something like that.", She mumbled lowering her head down and staring at the empty glass.

"Then conceiving again is the best option.", He said before he stood up. "Excuse me, I've some patients to check upon.", He said and she nodded. She sat there idly. Blank for next few minutes.

The mother inside her was screaming for her to follow doctor's advice but the logical part asked, how? After all, she can't just barge in his life and demand for a child. He doesn't even remember her for God's sake! What is she supposed to do even if she goes back? He has no idea that his child and she exist, and is in relationship with that Tiara. They are going strong from last five years. How can she go and become a nuisance?

When three years ago she left India, she left that country with the vow of never looking back again. She hasn't seen her parents and little sister from last five years, and now she has to go back for something she can't even bluntly demand from him. It'll be difficult to face him again, because he'll see her as a stranger while she would have to hide the scars given by him.

She hissed when she peeled the skin at the corner of her nail to the extent that it bled a little. Blowing on the cut, she pressed her injured thumb in a tight fist.

"So? Did you decide?", The doctor came back and she flinched before sitting straight. He sat down on his chair before entwining his hands and resting them on the desk. He leaned front, waiting to hear her decision.

"I'll try to conceive again.", She replied immediately. If she pondered more over the topic, she knew it will turn difficult and in the end, impossible for her to even think about something so outrageous.

"Great. I'll start the treatment. Don't worry, we'll do everything to keep him stable until the donor is ready.", He smiled while nodding in appreciation.

"But what if my other child don't match?", She asked the other risk that may occur.

"In eighty percent of cases, the child always turns out to be a match. And if not, we'll immediately take the donor that we think is a best match.", He fed her and she sighed before nodding. She was still restless when she stood up and walked out. After seeing her son sitting on the bed, watching SpongeBob on television that nurse had turned on for him, her lips curved up in a smile. A smile that holds the infinite love of a mother for her child.

"Mommy!", He beamed after seeing her at the doorstep. She grinned before rushing upto her son and encasing him in her arms tightly. As if she was afraid of him disappearing if she let's him away from her eyesight.

"Mommy, why are you crying?", He asked as he felt his mother shaking relentlessly. Her sobs thickened when she heard the caring and loving voice of her son. "Mommy, is it because of me? I'm sorry, Mommy.", He murmured in her embrace as his small hands struggled to caress her back.

She tried to stifle the cries, but the fear of losing him came crawling back in her and she cried more. Andrew's eyes narrowed with concern as he looked at his girlfriend who couldn't hide her pain anymore. The little boy looked at him in question, trying to comprehend the reason behind his mother's tears. Andrew just smiled sadly and mouthed at him to hug her tighter.

Reyansh sniffed before tightening his arms around his mother. He rubbed his cheek against her stomach and cried along with her.

"Mommy will keep you safe.", She murmured as she showered his pale cheeks with light but lovable pecks. He stopped sniffing as she lovingly wiped his tears away. He hoisted his small hands up and delivered the gesture back. She caught his hand in her hold and kissed his palm.

"Am I unhealthy, Mommy? Is that why you're crying?", He asked with feebly voice.

She picked him up and settled his weightless body on her lap before cradling his head in her cupped palms. "No, bub. You're not unhealthy. There are few germs inside you but Mommy will fight against them! And who do you think will win?", She asked gently as she caressed his back.

"Mommy!", He cheered immediately.

"Exactly! So now don't you worry about that.", She said and he nodded slowly. The fear in his eyes was clearly visible and as a mother, she hated seeing it. She is here. She'll do anything and everything but won't let a thing harm her son. "Do you want to see your Daddy?", She asked and the exact moment his eyes lightened up like Christmas lights. That made her heart light. At least there's something that can cheer up her son.

She pulled out her phone from her purse and unlocked it. She opened her recently deleted folder and restored the deleted videos and images. She immediately handed him her phone and got up. She has no interest or curiosity in hearing or seeing that man. He's the reason for all of this.

Andrew followed her as she walked out. She sat down on the resting chairs, and he did the same beside her. Millions of questions, confusions and fears swiveled across her mind. Questions that had no answers, confusions that cannot be explained and fears that tried to held her back. Sometimes you've to go at the very end for your loved ones, she has decided to go beyond that. After all, she's doing it for her life. Even though her heart belongs to her, it beats for her son.

"What happened?"

"I hate him, Andrew.", She murmured as she laid her head on the wall behind her.

"Who?", He had expected her ex-husband's name.

"The one who rules everything. The one who blessed me with my beautiful child and the one who's planning to snatch him away from me. I hate him. I hate that I still believe in him. I hate that my heart still yearns to pray to him. I hate that even though he made me go through hell, I'm trying to find heaven in his name. Faith in his existence. I'm tired of praying and never hearing back from him. Despite of struggling, I'm tired of watching everything slip away. I've had my trust broken millions of times, Andrew. But I never expected this from him. I never expected that he'll try to take away the only precious thing that gives me strength to face next day.", She mumbled weakly, her hands shook as she tried to control her sobs. After that day, nor once did she cried like this. But today, as if the universe was coming together to pour rain of pain on her.

"What happened, baby?", She sighed at his caring voice. She crawled closer to him and adjusted herself in his awaiting arms. He kissed her head, rocking her back and forth as she broke every barrier and wetted his blue shirt.

Only if she had met him before she met that man. Only if good people like Aarav, Andrew, her boss who is a great middle aged lady, had come in her life before she had decided to become part of that devil's life. He completely destroyed her.

And now, she needs him to protect her small world that she had built with so much strength and courage. The irony! Is this the justice God gives!? By plunging him back into their life, she knows she will be facing another hell.

"I need to go back to India.", She sniffled before sitting straight. His face fell, and she smiled sadly. "I'm sorry.", She whispered and he shook his head, taking in a deep breath to control the tears that threatened to come out. He loves her. And her voice confirmed that she's not coming back. Not anytime soon. Hence, he'll always love her but will never receive it back.

"Do anything that you need to. I'll always wait for you.", He said honestly.

"Don't wait for me, Andrew. Never wait for anyone. If someone's walking out of your life, don't waste your time in waiting for them. You're truly a beautiful man and you deserve so much more. Promise me you'll move on with your life, please.", She said shakily before opening her hand and forwarding it towards him.

"Are you never coming back?", He frowned.

"May be.", She lied.

His heart broke but he nodded slowly.

"Promise me, Andrew. Please.", She whispered and he brought his hand up before laying it on her small, warm hand. After lacing their fingers together, she pulled him slightly closer and placed her lips against his. He savoured the beautiful moment. Engraving it in his mind so it'll always hold a special place in his heart.

"Bye. You should leave now.", She said after pulling back.

This is it. He thought but nodded and stood up. "Goodbye, Angel. You're a beautiful soul and don't let anyone make you feel otherwise.", He whispered before he lightly pecked her forehead and walked out of hospital, also her life.

He didn't even demand any explanation.

She sighed as she stared at his retreating figure until it eventually disappeared.

She stood up and headed towards reception. "Can I make a call?", She asked politely and received a positive response from receptionist.

"Hello?", Aarav's confused tone was heard when he answered the call.

"Aarav, it's me."

"Where are you, Di?", He asked. "This is not your number."

"It's not. I called to inform you that I'm coming back to India. Handle the tickets and also Murphy's accommodation because I need to take care of my resignation."
