As Arjun had asked, she didn't show him her face for the rest of the day. He knew he had hurt her, but he was too proud to accept it and apologize.
The next few days, Mayera kept her presence scarce around him. She kept his coffee on his table a few minutes before he arrived in the office, emailed him his schedule instead of reading it to him, called him to inform him of something important. The only time they came face to face was when they had to attend meetings, and even then, she avoided meeting his eyes.
Arjun wouldn't lie, he missed her. His heart ached not hearing her melodic voice, and not seeing her beautiful face. There had been many weak moments when he just wanted to barge into her office, fall down in his knees and beg her to talk to him. But he didn't. Because he knew that that woman has started meddling with his heart and if he continued being near her, it'd be not long before he would be doing something he'd sworn never to do again, fall in love.
He couldn't afford falling in love. Not again.
So even though he was dying to apologize to her, he wasn't doing it. Hoping it'd created distance between them, and then he'd be able to suppress the feelings he was feeling.
"Are you even listening to me?" Veer's voice snapped Arjun out of his Mayera's thoughts.
Veer was hanging around at Arjun's office as he had not come here because he was busy with his own work.
Arjun cleared his throat,"Sorry, I was distracted. You were saying?"
"Forget it." Veer sighed. He knew something was wrong with Arjun and he would find out what it was.
A knock echoed in the room. Arjun gave permission and Mayera entered the room.
Arjun did a double take, making sure he was not dreaming and she was actually there.
"Hello Veer!" Her sweet voice said.

"Hey, princess. How have you been? Did you miss me?" Veer winked at her.
"I always miss you darling." She winked back at him and giggled.
Arjun didn't like it one bit. How can she smile that breathtaking smile at him. That smile that he can kill and die for.
"Those are such beautiful earrings." Veer eyed the diamond earrings Mayera was wearing.
She very seldom wore accessories to work, which is why when she did, it stood out.
She lightly touched them and replied,"Thanks. They were a gift."
Then she looked at Arjun and gave him a nonchalant expression. "Sir, the call came from Oberoi's. They're ready to sign the deal."
Mayera decided that she'll not talk to Arjun till he asked for forgiveness, and that's why she did her best to avoid him. But when the call from Oberoi's came, she got too impatient to tell him the good news. Also, she knew Veer was with Arjun, so if she had called him, Veer would have doubted. He spent enough time in their office to know that's not how Mayera and Arjun's working relationship was.
Or maybe, just maybe, she wanted to use this as an excuse to see Arjun.
"That's great. Inform dad about this." Arjun replied with a tight smile.
Seeing this exchange between the duo, Veer had figured out that there was some trouble. It will be fun finding it out, he smirked in his mind.
Mayera turned to leave but was stopped by Veer.
"By the way, I saw you last Sunday in OpenRoof Cafe."
Mayera looked at him, "Yeah, I really like that place. Nice, cozy vibe."
"I thought of coming to you and say hi, but you were with some guy and you both seemed too occupied with each other. That's why I didn't disturb you." Veer stated.
Mayera remembered dragging Giraffe for an early brunch whereas he wanted to sleep late. He had been in a grumpy mood throughout the ride. It was finally when Mayera ordered his favorite food, he smiled a little and they both indulged in their conversation. It has always been like this from childhood. When they both were together, they didn't need anyone else. They were best friends first, then siblings.

She didn't realise when a soft smile had appeared on her lips while thinking about her brother. And this didn't go unnoticed by both the men sitting in the room.
Veer coughed to bring her back to present. "The guy must be someone special if we go by the oh-so-pretty smile that you just smiled."
Arjun's hand clenched on the hand rest of his chair.
"Yes, he is," She was about to say it was her brother when an evil idea invaded her mind, "someone special."
She looked at Arjun and found him already staring at her, with an expression in his eyes that even a blind person would recognise as rage.
This too didn't go unnoticed by Veer.
He was initially shocked to see Arjun's anger practically radiating off him. Is it what he thinks it is?
Veer knew that Mayera was also playing along. He knew for many months now, he knows she has no one in her heart except for Arjun. The love she had for him was clearly visible in her eyes.
To confirm his thoughts, Veer continued, "Really? Now here I thought I had a chance with you?"
"I might reconsider if you cook me that amazing lasagna that you made for me last month." Veer's cooked food was to die for.
"Are those earrings a gift from that special someone?" Veer kept going. He needed a reaction out of Arjun.
"Indeed." She nodded.
That was it for Arjun. His last thread of patience broke.
"ENOUGH. This is my office, not your gossip room." He shouted.
Then he looked at Mayera in her eyes,"And if you're done discussing your love life, then I suggest you go back to your office and do the work for which I pay you for."
He had done it again. He had hurt her again.
After Mayera left the room, Veer looked at Arjun.
"What was that?"
"What do you mean?"
"Arjun, how can you shout at her like that?"
"She was not doing her work and wasting time. And my time is too precious to be wasted." Arjun focused on his laptop screen.
"Oh really? Is this the reason why you got so mad?" Veer cocked his eyebrow at him.
"What else would be the reason?" Arjun was getting pissed now.
"That you were jealous. You didn't like that she was out with someone else, someone who's giving her gifts, someone who's special to her." The way Veer said special made Arjun cringe.
"Shut the fuck up, Veer. I don't have time for your bullshit."
"Tu mujhse jhoot bol raha hai ya khudse?"
"Mai kisi se jhoot nahi bol raha hoon." Arjun retorted.
"Aacha? Toh dekh meri aankhon mai aur bol ki tujhe kuch feel nahi hua jab Mayera ne kaha ki uski life mai koi aur special hai. Ki tujhe bilkul jalan nahi hui use kisi ar ke saath imagine kar ke."
Veer's words made his heart clench more. Till now, he had all these feelings in his head, but when Veer said them out loud, it somehow became more real and more painful. It was becoming too much to handle. He needed to be alone.
"Don't you have a flight to catch?" Arjun questioned Veer.
Veer was leaving for Italy. It was a routine check for his restaurants there.
"Avoid it as long as you can. I'll see how much strength you have. I will be back in a week. I hope you would figure this out by that time and will be ready to talk."
He then grabbed his phone and started walking out. He opened the door, but then turned around and said one final line to his friend.
"Arjun, just please listen to your heart and not your brain. Don't fuck things up."
Veer didn't know why he said that. Maybe he had an intuition that something bad is going to happen while he'd be away.
