《Unhinged》~Alternate Ending~

Alexis was having trouble breathing as she pulled into her driveway. She looked at her house and took another unsteady breath as she exited her car. She was trying to process everything that Cammie had told her. She noticed her hand shaking as she unlocked her front door.

The house remained quiet. Alexis looked at the staircase that led to all the bedrooms and began climbing the stairs.

She thought of Cammie's parting words, "I'm not lying to you Dr. Reyna. Be careful who you trust."

Alexis trusted many people. Chace, Nicholas, Luke, Gabby, and Mack. How could she think the worst of any of them?

She opened the door to her bedroom and gasped, "What are you doing in here?"

"It's not what it looks like Alexis," Luke said as he held up his hands and stepped off of his small stepladder.

In his hands was another one of those high-tech baby monitors.

"Really? Because it looks like you're doing something you shouldn't. Nicholas!" Alexis yelled for her brother but no one responded.

"Sorry Alexis. He's not home."

She tried backing out of the room but Luke came forward towards her. "Why did you come home so quickly Alexis? I thought you were going to HEB."

"I ran into an old girlfriend of yours," Alexis whispered.

"Really? I didn't think there were too many of them around," Luke smirked.

"Cammie must've been lucky," Alexis said as she looked around for anything she could use as a weapon.

"She was the one that got away," Look sighed, "Maybe I'll come after her next. I hate to leave loose ends."

"Why are you doing this, Luke?"

"Why? That's a wonderful question. It's easy really Alexis. I've been watching you since me and Nicholas were in high school together. The beautiful Alexis Reyna. The 'I'm too good for everyone else' Alexis Reyna," Luke took another step forward and laughed when Alexis stumbled trying to move away from him.

"Watch your step Alexis. I wouldn't want you to trip and break your neck."

"You're insane. You've had a crush on me this entire time?" Alexis asked.

Luke laughed, "Of course not. Wow you are so...so narcissistic. That's a psych term, isn't it? You're so vain Alexis. Everything's got to be about you and your way. I used to like you. Hell I even thought I loved you at one point. Somehow it all turned into something different. Cammie...she used to love your show. She dumped me because of it."

"Really? I thought it had something to do with you being abusive. She told me all about it at the grocery store," Alexis took another step back.

Luke chuckled, "You're either brave or stupid to be taunting me at a time like this Alexis. Cammie left but then I started dating Gabby."

"Gabby?" Alexis didn't understand.

"You know...your friend Gabby. Don't worry Alexis. I didn't lay a finger on her in anger. Not once."

"No way. Gabby would've told me if she was dating you."

"Yeah right. She hates you. She wouldn't have told you anything," Luke muttered.

"Gabby is my friend!"

"No she isn't. Gabby is one of those women that likes to compare herself to other women and if she falls short then the other woman is to blame. And you call yourself a psychologist," Luke shook his head in disapproval.

"Gabby..." her voice trailed in confusion.

"Gabby poor Gabby. Don't waste your last moments thinking about her Alexis. Because she left me I started dating Susanna. Do you want to know her biggest flaw Alexis?"

Alexis didn't say a word and he continued, "She listened to your stupid show!"

"Luke, this makes no sense. Are you saying you started stalking me because your girlfriends broke up with you?"

"Shut up! I'm not finished! Your friend Gabby wanted me back. I was happy to oblige since Susanna was no longer in the picture. Do you want to know what the problem was this time, Alexis?"

She shook her head.

"You. Again it was you! I thought if Gabby was happy I would be happy so I decided to ruin you Alexis. I have this problem you see. I just want to be loved. Gabby will love me. I'll finally be good enough as long as she doesn't compare herself to you and me to your boyfriend."

"Luke no relationship can work if it's based on-"

"I'm sorry Alexis, I don't think you understand. I don't care what you have to say. I just want your career over and your relationship finished.

"So why kill Ivy and Deandra?"

"That was brilliant. Pure genius on my part. They're Gabby's closest friends. If they're gone, who else can she turn to but me?"

"She could've turned to me," Alexis suggested, taking another step back. She realized that she didn't have her cellphone with her.

"Wrong! She hates you. She would turn to me!"

"Luke you won't get away with this," Alexis whispered.

"Why not? I've gotten away with so much. I was able to go online and get your social security number, credit card information, everything I needed to set up a phone in your name. Even before your brother came back, I was able to sneak in and set up my monitor. Ask me how I did it. Please, ask me how I did it."

"How did you do it?" Alexis was trying not to give him the satisfaction of seeing her cry.

"Simplicity is always the best answer Alexis. I asked Nicholas where he kept his spare key. I told him I was going to drop of some old video games for him to play when he got back."

"So the notes, breaking in, everything...that was you?"

Luke smiled, "Of course it was me. Nicholas loves to gossip. All I had to do was ask about you and he'd tell me everything he knew about you and Dr. Ryder going paintballing or you and Nicholas going to a strip joint to pick up a friend. He was how I kept tabs on you Alexis."

Alexis didn't want to stay in the same room with him any longer. She had to escape. She turned around and ran out the door and down the stairs. Luke was right behind her. She was at the bottom of the steps when he lunged forward and brought her down to the ground with him.

"I'm going to have to make this quick to trick Nicholas into thinking you were killed by your stalker," Luke muttered as he tried to get on top of her to choke her.

Just then the front door swung open and Alexis heard her brother call out to her, "Alexis! I'm home. You better have bought more marshmallows. Luke ate all of them!"

He walked into the room and saw his friend trying to kill his sister, "You asshole! Get off my sister!" He ran forward and tackled Luke.

Alexis rolled over and began gasping for breath. She looked to her left and saw Nicholas pummeling Luke.

"What's going on in here?" Alexis looked up to see Officer Shelby Diaz running through the open door followed by Officer Winters and Chace.

Officer Winters pulled Nicholas off an unconscious Luke.

"What the hell is going on here?" Officer Diaz asked.

Chace was on the ground with Alexis, trying to help her up.

"He was...he tried. I'm gonna kill him," Nicholas roared as Officer Winters struggled to keep him in place.

"He tried to kill me," Alexis groaned between coughs. "He killed my friends. He's the stalker."

Officer Diaz called an ambulance to the house and attempted to revive Luke so that she could handcuff him.

Several hours later, Chace was sitting with Alexis in his arms and Nicholas was across from them in her living room.

"I can't believe it," Nicholas whispered, "We were best friends." Nicholas looked at Chace, "How did you know to call the cops?"

"His girlfriend brought a box of his things to the office for me to give to him. I noticed one of the items in the box was a picture of him and Cammie Rogers."

"Cammie Johnson now," Alexis murmured.

"Right, Cammie Johnson. It was of her and Luke. He was kissing her cheek. She used to be a patient of mine and always talked about her abusive boyfriend Luke. It's a common name so I didn't think anything of it."

"Until you saw that picture," Nicholas muttered.

"It's a good thing your friend Gabby brought it over," Chace said and kissed the top of Alexis' head.

"She's no friend of mine. Apparently she's always secretly disliked me and just likes to compare herself to me," Alexis whispered.

"Isn't that how all girls are with their friends?" Nicholas muttered, earning a scowl from his sister.

"Well it's thanks to her that I called the cops and they came in time to stop your brother from murdering a man," Chace chuckled.

"I was impressed little brother. I didn't know you could fight like that," Alexis smiled. "Thanks for saving me."

Nicholas blushed and shrugged, "It wasn't anything special. I learned those moves from watching Karate Kid."

Alexis laughed and Nicholas cleared his throat, "Alexis, I'm really sorry about bringing Luke into our lives. He betrayed me and tried to kill you. If anything ever happened to you...I don't know what I'd do," his voice had cracked and Alexis felt her heart warm at her playful brother's seriousness.

She stood up and walked to her brother and hugged him, "It's okay Nicholas. We're going to be okay. You lost a friend but you still have me."

"And me," Chace added as he walked over to them and hugged both of them, causing Alexis to giggle and Nicholas to groan, "Can you please let me out of this awkward sandwich?"

Alexis and Chace both started laughing.

"I'm going to need some marshmallows to recover," Nicholas muttered as he left the room. Alexis reminded him that they didn't have any, causing him to curse Luke again for eating them all.

"I'll tell you what. Let's go get some at the store together Nicholas," Chace suggested.

"What am I? Some kind of kid? I don't need you to take me to the store to try and cheer me up," Nichols frowned.

"You're right. I'm sorry. I just thought your sister needed some alone time. She's been through a lot and wanted to process things," Chace explained.

Nicholas looked at his sister who smiled and nodded, "I just need a little bit of time Nicholas."

"Okay. I understand. Did you already change the alarm pin?"

"Yes. I already changed the alarm and tomorrow a new company is going to come in and install a different alarm," his sister answered.

Nicholas nodded, "That's good. So Chace...what else are you going to buy me besides marshmallows?"

Alexis saw Chace turn his back to Nicholas and mouth, "Don't worry. I'll talk to him."

She smiled in return. As tough as things were for her, she couldn't imagine what Nicholas was going through and she was glad Chace would help him. As they walked towards the door, she heard Nicholas ask, "You'll buy me anything? Seriously? What if I said dirty magazines?"

Alexis laughed as she heard the door close behind them. She took a deep breath and exhaled. It was over. After weeks of living in fear...it was finally over. She had already talked to Mack as had the police. Officer Winters even apologized for doubting her. She looked around her house and smiled because she still had Chace and Nicholas...and they were all she needed.
