《Unhinged》Chapter 7

Officer Dean Winters stared at Alexis, his eyes unflinching. She appeared a bit shaken up by the incessant fidgeting of her body but he clearly didn't think her story made sense and it was making her nervous.

"So tell me again. You found this ring inside your purse?" he asked.

Alexis softly counted to five before answering, "Yes. For the tenth time, it was in my purse."

"And it may have belonged to your dead friend?"

His insensitive words caused her to scowl. "My friend who was recently murdered did own this ring. She wore it all the time."

"Then how did it get in your purse?"

"How would I know?" Alexis gave an exasperated groan. "Isn't it your job to figure that out?"

Officer Winters frowned. "Okay, Ms. Reyna-"

"Doctor Reyna," she corrected him again. She suspected he was addressing her incorrectly on purpose.

"Doctor Reyna. Do you know anyone who would have killed Deandra Ward and would also want to hurt you?"

"No. Not a soul."

"You said a man, a janitor, was coming out of your office. Did you get to see his face?"

"No. He was wearing a baseball cap and had his head down. He did have blonde hair though. I could see it coming out of his cap. Mack said the maintenance crew only comes in on the weekend so it seemed suspicious to see him."

Officer Winters nodded. "Did you notice any tattoos on him? Like perhaps a bald eagle on his left forearm?"

"That's really specific. Ummm yeah. Now that I think of it, he did have a tattoo!"

"And he was wearing a gray uniform?"

"Yes."

"Are you sure he only comes on the weekends?"

Alexis gave a confused expression and followed the direction of Officer Winters' expression. Talking to another worker, was a male janitor.

"I guess I'm not too sure."

"I'll talk to the janitor. Is there anything else you want to tell me?"

Alexis clenched her fists. "I really think you should check the ring for fingerprints. I've told you that someone is stalking me and maybe that person killed Deandra. How else would that ring get into my purse?"

Officer Winters pursed his lips together. "That's a very good question."

Alexis could see the look of skepticism on his face and it angered her. Did he think she was some crazy woman? Chace joined them.

"Is everything okay?" Chace asked.

He looked from Alexis to Officer Winters. They seemed to be having some kind of staring contest.

"Everything is fine here, Dr. Ryder," Officer Winters told Chace.

Alexis rolled her eyes at his ability to correctly address Chace.

"Are you going to check the ring for fingerprints?" Chace asked.

Officer Winters nodded. "Yes, I will definitely be checking the ring for fingerprints."

She sighed in relief. "Good."

"Did you need anything else, Officer?" Chace asked.

"No, that'll be it for now. I'll go interview the janitor. Excuse me."

Alexis cursed under her breath.

"What was that?" Chace asked.

She shook her head. "Nothing. It's been a long day and that officer is the worst."

"Hey, you were great. I can't believe you still did the show even though you were so shook up about the ring. Any other person wouldn't have been able to do that."

"I just thought our topic tonight was important. Besides we also dedicated the show to Deandra."

"How are you holding up?"

"I'm fine. I just need to get home."

Alexis smiled as she left the building but something was bothering her. She had a nagging feeling she couldn't shake. It felt like someone was watching her. She walked out into the parking lot and looked around. It had gotten late and the parking lot was void of any people. She scrambled inside her purse for her keys which she held in between her fingers. Years ago, her brother had taught her to hold her keys between her fingers, so if someone came up to try and attack her, she could punch them and the keys would cause extra damage that her strength didn't carry.

She could hear the traffic of the city surround her and one of the parking lot lights was flashing on and off.

"This is like a scene from some scary movie," she whispered as she heard the snap of her heels against the pavement.

She got closer to her car and noticed a red envelope behind one of her windshield wipers.

She froze. She was a few steps away from her car and she looked around.

Nothing.

She took a step forward...and then another.

She reached an unsteady hand out to the small red envelope as her hand with the keys tightened.

Suddenly, the sound of an alarm blasted through the air. Alexis realized she had accidentally hit the panic button of her own car which caused the lights to flash and the alarm to sound.

She fumbled with her keys to get it to turn off. Two quick beeps and there was silence.

She sighed and laughed at herself. She quickly grabbed the red envelope.

"What do you think you're doing?" a male voice asked.

Alexis turned around to see an old man standing in front of her. She smiled. It was Oliver, the security guard. He wasn't a very threatening figure but his job was to watch the parking lot.

"Hi, Oliver. It's me, Dr. Reyna. I accidently set my own alarm off."

"What's that in your hand? A valentine?"

"Uh...no. Not quite."

"Well hurry up and get home. It's not safe for a lady to be out in the dark by herself."

"I will. Thanks, Oliver."

He nodded and began to walk away, when a thought occurred to Alexis. "Hey, Oliver. Did you see anyone leave this note on my car?"

He scratched his jaw as he thought about it before answering, "No, I can't say that I did."

Her smile fell but she said, "Okay...I just thought I would ask."

"The security cameras might have caught it though."

"Really? Can we check?" Alexis asked eagerly

"Sure, let's go back to my office."

She followed the old security guard with the wobbly gait to his office. Oliver flipped on some mini television screens and frowned.

"What's wrong, Oliver?"

"My camera's gone out. I've been training the new guy so I haven't been watching the monitors in here. I'll have to report this."

Oliver made some calls and grabbed a small toolkit. "I'm going to check on the camera. I'll be back. You stay here."

"It's okay. I should probably get going."

"No, just stay here. I'll be right back."

She didn't understand why Oliver wanted her to wait for him. She sighed as she held the red envelope in her hands.

"I guess I should open it," she told herself.

She slowly tore open the envelope. Inside was a card of an Amarillo wearing a cowboy hat and a sheriff's badge. Scrawled inside the card was a message written especially for her.

"I'm still watching."

She dropped the card in fear and jumped when she saw a man standing in the doorway of Oliver's office.

"Why are you so scared, Dr. Reyna?"

Alexis looked at Officer Winters and despite her dislike for him, actually felt somewhat relieved.

"Thank God it's you. Someone left a note on my car." She bent down and quickly picked up the note. She handed it to him and he looked it over.

"Interesting," he said softly.

"What's interesting?"

"I came down here because security called a report to the station. Since I was already here, they asked me to check this out. Who knew this building would be such a hub of criminal activity?"

"I'm telling you that someone is trying to scare me. They're following me." Alexis pointed to the note he was holding. "Doesn't that prove anything to you?"

He sighed and said, "Listen, Dr. Reyna. How long have you had to share a show with Dr. Chace?"

"What? What does that have to do with anything?"

"Just answer the question."

"Less than two weeks. Not very long."

"Were you happy when you learned you had to share a show?"

Alexis didn't understand where this was going. "Not at first but I get along fine with Dr. Ryder."

"Hmm..."

"What's that supposed to mean Officer Winters? What are you getting at?"

"When did you say you received the first letter?"

"It was an e-mail. Dr. Ryder read it on air. The man basically said he was my stalker."

Officer Winters rubbed the back of his neck. "It's very suspicious."

"Don't tell me you think Dr. Ryder is behind all of this? He's a respected psychologist. He's written books. He'd be the last one to do something like this."

"So you don't think a psychologist can go a little crazy?" Officer Winters asked her.

"No, that's not what I'm saying. It's actually not uncommon for a mental health professional to require counseling. We have to listen to all kinds of stressful stories. I just don't think it's Dr. Ryder."

"I agree." Officer Winters nodded. "He has nothing to gain from this."

"You agree with me? So then who do you think could be doing this?"

"I don't think you're going to like my answer, " he admitted.

Alexis fumed. She was getting very irritated with Officer Dean Winters. "I'm pretty sure I can handle it. Who do you think is writing me these letters?"

Officer Winters cocked his head to one side and answered her.

"You."
