《Unhinged》Chapter 2

Multi-tasking while driving on the busy streets of Houston was proving to be dangerous. Alexis hissed as the hot coffee from her paper cup spilled on her bare leg while trying to pass a suburban in the next lane.
She glanced at the time on her phone and cursed before pressing on the gas. Her phone continuously vibrated, letting her know Mack, the producer of Heartbreakers, was waiting for her.
She made her way through the radio station's parking garage, waving at Oliver, the elderly security guard, before claiming her normal parking spot. The building was actually a large media hub that housed a local news station as well as a recording studio.
Alexis rushed into the elevator and pressed her floor's button several times before glancing at the time on her phone again. The doors were about to close when an emerging hand caused the elevator doors to open back up.
A tall man with dirty-blonde hair and indigo eyes smiled at her. "Sorry, but I'm already late."
He was cute enough to make her forget Mack was waiting on her. Alexis grinned and said, "Join the club."
He looked at the buttons on the elevator. "What a coincidence. We're heading to the same floor."
"Do you work here? I've never seen you before."
He stuck out his hand. "Chace. Dr. Chace Ryder."
"Dr. Alexis Reyna." Alexis shook his hand as the elevator dinged, letting them know they reached their designated floor. "Well, here we are."
They both walked to the station manager's office. Alexis thought it was strange he was heading in the same direction as her. She glanced at him several times but he just smiled back at her. When she knocked on the office door, Bernie the station manager, looked up and clapped his hands in relief. "So, the two of you already met? Fantastic."
Mack stood up, confusion written on his face. "You two already know one another?"
"We just met on the elevator." Alexis' brows drew together. "Why do I get the feeling something is going on here?"
Bernie's expression fell. "Oh, well I'm not sure how to explain this." He pointed a finger at Mack and cried, "He has something important to tell you."
Mack's eyes widened as he pointed to himself. "Me? You want me to tell her?"
"Well I'm not going to," Bernie whispered.
"She doesn't know?" Chace asked.
"Know what?" Alexis took a step forward, hands on her hips.
Chace looked at Bernie and Mack who were conveniently looking at their shoes. He sighed and turned to Alexis before explaining, "I'm going to be your new partner on Heartbreakers."
Ten minutes later, Mack and Bernie were regretting their decision to not tell Alexis about her new co-host.
"You couldn't warn me?" Alexis was pacing in circles while Bernie and Mack sat quietly in front of her. "I thought we were supposed to be like family on this show. Is this how you treat a family member? How could you keep this from me? Are you trying to replace me?"
"Of course not! We just wanted to reach a male demographic we haven't been able to hit," Mack explained.

"A male demographic? Most men don't listen to relationship advice much less radio shows that give it." Alexis continued pacing. She stared out the office windows that looked into the hall where Chace was standing, patiently waiting for them to let him back into Bernie's office.
"Exactly!" Bernie also stood up. "Dr. Ryder can change all of that. He's hip and cool. Men can look up to him and take his advice. Plus he's easy on the eyes so he'll look great on our website."
Alexis rolled her eyes. "First of all Bernie, no one and I do mean no one, says 'hip and cool' anymore. Second, are you really not trying to replace me?"
"No!" they both said in unison.
"We want you two to work together," Bernie explained. "He used to have a show in Austin that did really well but he quit to focus on his personal clients and his books. He's been living here in Houston, so we lured him to be on the show. I didn't tell you about it because I knew you'd get upset. We weren't even sure he would agree but he did."
"Why did you think I'd be upset?"
Mack shrugged and elbowed Bernie. "I told you we should've told her. She'll like Dr. Ryder. Everyone does."
Bernie made a sound similar to a chicken clucking. "What do you mean you told me? I'm the one who said--"
"So now what happens?" Alexis interrupted. She saw Chace in the hall talking to a janitor. Even the maintenance staff seemed to like him. "Does Dr. Perfect out there get put on the show immediately?"
"Starting next week you two will work together," Bernie explained. "It took a lot of effort to get him to agree to be on this show, Alexis. I had to pull a lot of favors."
"Dr. Chace is very much in demand," Mack added. "We're depending on him to bring in more listeners."
Alexis looked at Chace for the third time. He still had a smile plastered to his face despite being asked to wait in the hall like some unruly school kid.
"We're depending on you too, Alexis. The two of you are going to be fantastic together." Bernie rubbed his hands together. "Plus, the ads will probably start rolling in."
Alexis gave Bernie the stink-eye before exiting his office. She looked at Chace who was leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets as if he hadn't just flipped her radio show upside down.
"Follow me Mr. Male Demographic." Alexis motioned for him to follow.
"I'm sorry, what did you say?"
"I said to follow me. I'll show you around the station."
"You seem upset. I'm sorry they didn't tell you about me," Chace said quietly as they made their way down the corridor that led to the studio.
"Don't apologize." Alexis waved at one of the interns passing them in the hall. "You didn't do anything wrong. I'm sorry if I was rude earlier. It's nothing against you...I just didn't expect it. Mack and Bernie are like family to me so I'm surprised they kept your arrival hidden."

"I see."
Alexis swallowed her reply and continued to introduce Chace to the different staff members. When they were done, she gave him a rundown of how her show worked.
"We don't play boring music. Elevator music is forbidden on Heartbreakers. We try to play contemporary stuff. Believe it or not, Mack is always on top of the newest music out there. At the end of the show I like to read a random letter from a listener."
"Do you pick the letter?"
"No, I let Mack choose whatever letter or e-mail he thinks is best. It doesn't really matter to me."
"Sounds easy enough," Chace said as he was trying to keep up with her. "So what are we going to do to liven up the show?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I was brought here for a reason. We need to reach men and reading letters isn't going to do it."
He was on site less than a day and he was already trying to change things.. Alexis counted to five in her head before responding, "Okay, what do you suggest?"
"Hmmm...I don't know something like a he said-she said segment."
"He said? She said?" Alexis repeated.
"We each give opposing points of view on a topic and then let the listeners call in and pick sides. It'll encourage them to interact with the show more." He smiled at Alexis and she couldn't help but smile back.
"Sounds good. We'll try it. Did you have a particular topic in mind, Dr. Ryder?"
"Dr. Ryder?" Chace frowned. "Just call me Chace."
Alexis could understand why Mack and Bernie were beguiled by Dr. Ryder. He was handsome, easy-going, and intelligent. She nodded. "Alright. I'll call you Chace. You can call me Alexis."
"Thank you...Alexis."
"So, what topic did you want to use?" Alexis asked again.
"You want me to pick the topic?"
"You were the one that thought of the segment. Surely you have a topic in mind. If you don't, you should come up with one."
"Why me?"
"Why not?"
He smiled at her cheekiness. "Okay, I'll pick the topic. Let's pick something we can easily debate. How about work harassment?"
"Work harassment?" Alexis repeated.
"Yeah. When a cute guy hits on a woman it's flirting but when an ugly guy hits on a woman it's harassment."
Alexis laughed. "How are you going to argue that? As if any woman would ever consider you unattractive."
Chace smiled. "Why Dr. Reyna, are you calling me handsome?"
"I think I need the number to HR. What does that tell you?"
He pretended to pout and she laughed before walking ahead of him to the elevators.
"This is going to be fun," Chace whispered to himself.
After leaving the station and returning home, Alexis attempted to answer some of the messages on the Heartbreakers website. She was just about to open an e-mail when her doorbell rang incessantly followed by someone pounding on her front door.
"Alexis! Are you home, Alexis?"
"I'm coming! Calm down!" Alexis ran to the door to see her brother, Nicholas Reyna.
"Nicholas!" She hugged her brother tightly then pushed him away and punched him in the stomach. "You ass! I've been trying to get in touch with you for weeks. Where the hell were you?"
"On sabbatical."
Alexis scoffed. "You have to have a job first before going on sabbatical."
Nicholas laughed. "Sis, I am a mature young man now. I have a degree and I freelance."
"Were you with a woman somewhere? Or should I say women?" Alexis picked up one of her brother's bags. "I can't imagine you being in a monogamous relationship."
Nicholas playfully gasped. "Alexis, how could you say such a thing? I'm a mature young man now. Besides, aren't you my sister? You're supposed to say nice things about me like how any woman would be lucky to have me as a boyfriend."
"Riiight and I'm Santa Claus."
"Wait. What? You're Santa Claus? Can I tell you what I want for Christmas?"
Alexis punched him in the arm. "Sorry Nicholas. Santa says 'ho ho ho' but he doesn't deliver them."
"Ha ha...not funny. So are you, the almighty psychologist and big sister, gonna let me stay with you for a few weeks?"
"Hmmm...I don't know. Do I really want an annoying brother living with me?"
"Annoying?" Nicholas pretended to be offended which made Alexis laugh. "I'm adorable and affectionate but annoying? That's just cold-hearted."
"Adorable and affectionate? Are you describing yourself or a puppy?"
"I'm serious. Can I stay with you? You can't say no since you're already helping me bring in my stuff." He nudged his duffle bag with his foot.
"Of course you can stay with me. You don't even have to ask. Just don't bother my clients when they come over."
"You have clients come here? As in the place that you live? Is that even safe? What if one of them is secretly a masked murderer?"
Alexis laughed. "Knock on wood, brother. I haven't had any problems yet."
Nicholas shook his head. "You're definitely in the right field. You have to be crazy to help the crazy."
Across town, two patients of Alexis Reyna were spending the evening at home.
"Larry! Where are you, Larry?"
Larry sat in his closet, trying to be quiet. He just wanted some peace and quiet. Suddenly the door opened, and there stood his wife, Sylvia.
She mouth curled into a disgusted expression. "Are you hiding in the closet Larry?"
"Uh...no."
"Really? Then what are you doing?"
"I'm...I'm looking for my slippers."
"If you were really looking for your slippers, why are you sitting in a dark closet?"
"I don't know," Larry whispered.
Sylvia rolled her eyes. "Forget it. I don't want to know. I just wanted to tell you that I confirmed our appointment with Dr. Reyna tomorrow."
"Great." Larry smiled.
Sylvia sighed. "I should've listened to my mother and married a doctor." She stomped off, leaving Larry alone in the closet.
Larry waited a few minutes before he stood up and walked to his locked dresser drawer. He opened up a small journal he kept hidden from his wife and flipped through the pages. Inside, were hand drawings of his psychologist Dr. Reyna. He looked around to make sure Sylvia wasn't around and whispered, "I'll see you tomorrow my love."
