Just an Orphan Girl - chapter 5

*********************************************************************

Scott's P.O.V

School was defiantly going to be tough for the both of us. I watched as Oakley got out of her car and pulled her crutches out of the back seat she stabilized herself and made sure she was okay to walk, I noticed her eyes were all red and puffy. I didn’t really understand why, but I could tell she would cry herself to sleep almost every night, and has been for the past few years now.

Oakley looked straight towards me and smiled widely, like I was the most amazing person on the planet. She waved at me not caring what everyone else around her thought about it. That’s why I admired her so much. She couldn’t care less that people were going to talk about this probably for the rest of the week.

However, turning away from her, was probably one of the hardest things I had ever had to do before. My wolf was going crazy inside of me begging me not to turn my back to her, but I did. Soon she was going to have to forget about me and my troubled background. I closed my eyes and walked the complete opposite direction from her, hoping it didn’t affect her as much as it did to me.

I headed to class playing with the long straps on my school bag telling myself not to go back and apologise to Oakley when I was brought out of my thoughts when my best friend Tyler came up behind me and jumped on my back, over my school bag. He wrapped his legs around my waist and held on tightly so he wouldn’t fall.

“Hey man.” I smiled up at him. Tyler was always a good distraction. He was the best at making you forget your problems and just be happy. I guess maybe it was because he was so happy going his personality rubbed off on others.

“What’s going on Scotty boy?” He beamed ruffling my perfectly flat hair. I took pride in my hair at school. I didn’t like the whole ‘I just got out of bed look’.

“Going to class, maybe like you should be too.” I nodded.

“What happened back there with Oakley? You totally brushed her off before. Everyone was laughing at her, she looked like she was going to break down to tears or something. I thought she was your mate. What happened? You guys in a fight or something?”

So I guess people did notice it then. “It was nothing. Forget about it, I already have.” I told him hopping that it didn’t turn into something massive and blow up in my face like I was expecting it too.

“You like her man, why the hell are you brushing her off like that? That’s not the way to win ’em over we both know that.”

“I can’t like her Ty, dads already laid down the rules so many times, it’s over. Nothing can happen.”

“Since when have you ever listened to your dad? Why is this different?” Tyler reasoned with me.

“This is different, you know that dude.” I stopped in front of the classroom door and turned to Tyler who was no standing on the ground not on my back.

Tyler sometimes had a brain, he didn’t use it very much, but I was defiantly there.

“Good luck in class.” He sung walking to his class next door.

I groaned as I stepped into class and looked around and tried to find a seat. Cursing, when I saw who was sitting next to the only spare seat in the class.

Before this week, I would have begged to sit next to her, but after last night, it was the last thing on my mind.

Sitting directly next to her was not part of my plan.

I walked over to her and slumped down in my seat avoiding all eye contact with her. She didn’t even acknowledge me though. I guess she obviously got the message that I didn't want to talk to her then.

We couldn’t be friends.

I have to keep telling myself this.

It'll be easier in the long run for the both of us. Her especially.

“Okay class.” Mr. Kelly my English teacher called out.

“Today we’re doing the mid-year exam which I hope you all prepared for like I told you too. I hope everyone does well, this will be going on your end of year report.” He told us all while handing the sheet of paper out to each student.

“No talking, or copying because I will rip it up and send you out, don’t you think I’m not joking, I have done it before, and I will do it again if necessary. This is a really important text guys, I want you all to do well.” He lectured us.

The test was a breeze, I studied for it this morning when I had the chance too, when I wasn’t distracted that was. I knew what I was doing.

Towards the end of the lesson I glanced over and saw that Oakley was well and truly finished, drawing random symbols on the back page of the test. She was actually pretty good drawer. She had finished her test in the first hour. Oakley was just one of them students who didn’t have to study to be smart. She didn’t really have time to study at home, so she was doing extremely well for herself.

I always liked a girl who was smart.

“What you drawing there girly?” I shot up when I saw the guy next to her on the other side was leaning on her desk smirking down at her.

“Nothing.’ She muttered moving her papers away turning the booklet over so he couldn't see them any longer.

“Why hide it when you have talent Oakley? Let me have a look at it.” He started tracing stuff on her bare arm with his finger.

My wolf wanted to hurt this guy. Why was the world making it so damn hard for me to leave her alone and forget about her?

“Please leave me alone, stop talking to me, the test is still going, we have to be quite.” She told the boy in the nicest way possible.

That was her problem she was too dam nice.

“Come on Oakley have some fun. Sit with me at lunch and I can show you some fun?” He offered wiggling his eye brows.

“No thank you.” She blushed looking further down on her desk.

Before I was able to step in Mr. Kelly cleared his throat.

“Is there something wrong here Chase, Oakley?”

“Sir, she was copying my test, begging me to give her the answers. She was just about to take it of me Sir I swear, I tried to tell her that we were doing a test but she didn’t listen to me.” Chase shouted. Oakley went bright red and dropped her head looking at the table. She was too shy to defend herself.

“Oakley is this true?” Mr. Kelly shouted leaning over towards her desk.

“No Sir.” She shook her head.

“Why would Chase make something like that up then?”

“I don’t know Sir.”

“Oakley what can I say? You were the last person I thought I would have to do this too in my class. First you try and get away with copying and now you’re lying to me about it. I think you should leave my classroom and redo this test some other times as it seems as if you cannot do it in these conditions.” He snapped.

I was going to protest about how unfair that was. Oakley defiantly wasn’t saying anything.

Why wasn’t she sticking up for herself? I was going to jump out of my seat as Oakley left without putting up a fight. All she did was pick up her bag and her crutches and hobble off. I then realised that we weren’t talking anymore.

School wasn’t even the hardest part, how in the world is it possible to ignore someone in their own house?

Oakley’s P.O.V

I didn’t realise we weren’t on speaking terms at school. He was so nice to me last night at home, then changed as soon as other people were around who would judge him.

I knew it. It was way too good to be true.

To make the day even worse Chase totally framed me and Mr. Kelly ripped up my test. I have to re-do it tonight, but I have work at six, so I’ll be cutting it fine making it they’re on time.

Why was everyone against me today?

School finally finished for the day and still not one word came out of Scott’s mouth towards me.

He stared at me all day though. It got to the point where I just wanted to scream at him and demand what his problem was. He was so annoying today. It was as if I did something wrong, I don’t understand what I did. I thought we were fine last night.

But then again, he wasn’t really staring at me; he was more so glaring at me.

I slowly walked over to Mr Kelly’s classroom once school was finished to redo this stupid test that I already did and finished. I was surprised to hear there was already someone in there when I got there.

“Jake, do it again and I will make sure my father kicks you out of the pack, do you hear me?” A deep voice growled.

“I made it clear to the whole class any cheating and there will be consequences. She chose not to listen to me and that is not my fault.”

“If I find out you have touched a single hair on her head I will kill you, you understand that?”

Before I could hobble out the doorway the person I had heard talking to the teacher burst through the door knocking straight into me making me drop my bag on the floor, with everything falling out.

My crutches flew to the sides, no chance of me getting them on my own.

“Shoot sorry.” He grumbled angrily picking up my crutches pulling them together for me.

I looked up at the angry boy and saw Scott looking back at me in disbelief.

“Sorry, I ah, wasn’t watching where I was going.” He muttered his head looking at the ground.

“Don’t mention it.” I whispered expecting him to walk away. Instead he knelt on the floor across from me and helped me pick up all of my stuff, which was scattered everywhere.

I noticed something that he was about to pick up. I tried to snatch it away from him, but he picked it up before I had a chance to bend down and reach for it.

“Who are they?” He asked in a low voice showing me the picture that I carry around everywhere with me. The only picture I have of my parents stayed with me at all times, just in case someone took it from my room.

“My parents.” I muttered dryly. I wasn’t in the mood to talk to Scott at this moment. Since when did he have the right to talk to me now that everyone had gone home and there wasn’t anyone to confirm it?

“What happened to them?”

“Wolves.” I mumbled matter-of-factly.

He stiffened at the words.

He stood up and backed up ever so slowly. “I have to go.” He dropped the picture back on the ground leaving me on my own to pick up all my belongings.

“Jerk.” I whispered loud enough hoping he would hear me.

After finally picking up everything, I knocked on Mr. Kelly’s door waiting for an all clear to come in.

“Come in.” He sang sweetly.

I opened the door awkwardly trying not to lose my balance.

“Oakley, take a seat.” He said calming me.

“Hi,” I dropped my head and sat at a spare table in the middle of the room.

“What happened today Oakley? Why didn’t you stand up for yourself? What has happened to you? He walked closer to my table placing his hands on my desk.

“Excuse me?” I blushed.

“I saw what happened, why would you let someone like Chase bully you like that? A couple of years ago you were the loudest in the class, you were always getting into trouble for talking, now you can’t even stand up for yourself when someone accuses you for cheating? What has happened? ” I didn’t know what he wanted me to say.

“Sir, if you don’t mind, I have work soon I need to get home, if I could just retake the test now that would be really great.”

“I think I understand what happened.” He spoke up.

Without saying anything I just stopped fiddling with my fingers and looked up at him. Well this should be interesting.

“Ever since you have had something to do with Scott you have been distracted. You need to stop talking to him. He is not a good person Oakley.” He growled.

He pulled out something sharp from his pocket which scared me half to death. A pocket knife. What in the world.

“Stay away from Scott William's, do you understand me?” Mr. Kelly brought the knife up to my arm holding it tight to my skin. He wasn’t afraid of hurting me.

“Yes, yes sir.” I mumbled.

“What was that?” He slapped me across the face making me shudder. This wasn’t the same teacher I had a few hours ago. What had happened?

“Yes Sir.”

“You better do as I tell you too. He is not a good person, I wouldn’t want someone like you getting hurt from him.” He asked pulling the knife deeper into my skin breaking the laying.

I took a step backward hopping I could reach one of my crutches and hit him with it to distract him and get out of here, but just my luck, I stepped directly into the wall.

“Do you promise Miss Green?”

I nodded carefully.

Before I could even flinch he slowly and painfully pulled the knife down my arm, drawing a blood line, ruining my shift.

Blood was dripping down my arm I was shaking so badly I couldn’t think straight. I was scared out of my mind. School was supposed to be a happy and safe environment; whether this was the total opposite.

“Get out of my sight.” He whispered. As I carefully turned around he called my name again. “Oh and Oakley, you better not tell anyone about this little conversation. This stays between the two of us alright?” He nodded his head and ushered me to leave his room.

Grabbing my bag and my crutches I limped out of there as quickly as my legs would take me.

Mr. Kelly was one of my favourite teachers. Why would he do something like this? Why was he telling me to stay away from Scott? He was a teacher, I didn’t understand.

I drove home, not only my leg hurting now, but my arm too. There was a blood stain left on my dashboard but I couldn’t care less at the moment. When I unlocked the front door of my house, Scott was already inside sitting at the table with Jason.

“What took you so long?” Jason demanded.

“Nothing.” I snapped.

Jason squinted his eyes towards me, as if he could tell I was lying.

“Sorry I mean, I was held up at school, nothing else too it.”

Without looking towards Scott’s direction, headed straight for my room, closing the door quickly behind me. I couldn’t help the tears that were falling from my eyes as I collapsed on my bed.

I didn’t realise how long I was laying there for, when I looked up I gasped as I saw Scott standing in the way for the doorway.

“What happened to your arm?” Scott demanded.

“Nothing.” I muttered.

“Oakley, why are you crying? Did Jake- Mr. Kelly do something to you?”

“Go away Scott, I don’t want to talk to you right now.”

“Oakley you need to tell me if someone has hurt you alright?” Why was he acting all heroic and tough all of a sudden? Again with the mood swings. He was worse than a girl at times.

“Why? Why do you care? You didn't care about me at all today, why do you finally care about me now? You didn’t say one single word to me all day, and left me in the morning without even a simple reason as to why we weren’t friends anymore. What, so we’re only friends when no one can see us huh? Close the door on your way out Scott, I done talking to you.”

“I’m sorry Oakley okay? I thought it was better for the both of us to not be friends at school. Just let me have a look at your arm to see if you’re okay. I get that you don’t want to talk to me, but I just want to see if you’re alright.” He slowly walked closer to me.

“No Scott, this is my turn to turn my back on you. Get lost, I don’t want you here.” I yelled.

“Please.” He whispered raking his hand through his hair as if this was hard for him. Oh boy he had no idea what I was going through at the moment. My mind was about to corrupt.

“I’m fine, I don’t need you to play nurse with me.” I muffled.

“Let me see your arm then and I’ll be the judge on that.” He whispered back.

Sighing in defeat, I held out my arm and he grabbed it gently searching for where the wound started.

“Why did he do this to you?”

I may as well be honest with him, he wasn’t going to leave if I didn’t tell him the truth. “He told me to stay away from you.”

Scott growled loudly, his face reddening.

“Why do you growl all the time?” I randomly asked him while he continued to search at my arm.

“Huh?” He looked up at my face. He was totally out of it looking at my arm. Since when did Scott become the professional doctor?

“You growl sometimes, when you’re around me. Why?” I smiled softly at him.

“You make me so angry, that’s why.” He snapped. I jumped back pulling my arm away from him. What was his problem all of a sudden?

“Oakley.” He leaned forward. I flinched away.

“Just get out, I’ll be fine, I don’t need you or anyone to tell me what to do alright? I can look after myself. I have been for the last 17 years and I’m doing just fine. ” I told him.

“Yes you do.” He muttered looking directly in my eyes.

I looked down at my arm, my black long-sleeved top was rolled up, and the blood was dry, it was going to be okay.

“Oakley it’s 5:30!” Jason yelled from the front room.

“Crap!” I whispered shaking my head in disbelief.

“What?” Scott asked me scrunching up his eyebrows in confusion.

“I have to go to work in like ten minutes Scott, you need to get out of here so I can get ready.” I pulled down my sleeve, trying not to show weakness in front of him, when deep down, it was aching so badly I was starting to feel light headed. Scott didn’t need to know that though, he probably didn’t even care.

“You aren’t serious are you? You can’t go to work when you’re hurt Oakley, when will you learn that?” He shook his head refusing to leave my bedroom.

“I am fine Scott, I need to work to earn money.” I demanded.

“Oakley you-”

“Out!” I interrupted him. I was sick of him acting like he was the boss of me. I didn’t need him prancing around the place telling me what to do.

He looked at me once more, and huffed. He slowly turned around and left my room, knowing that he wasn’t going to win this argument. Not this time anyway.

I got changed quickly, and swallowed a few painkillers to hold off the pain for a few hours while I’m working.

Leaving my crutches up in my room, thinking that I would be fine without them for a little while, I left my room and entered the kitchen read to say goodbye to everyone before I left.
