《Lustrous》Chapter 37: Butterflies Bite

I turned over as the birds started chirping outside. It was just after six am and I was getting very annoyed at the sun for rising so damn early in the day. Didn't it know that this was still sleep time!

I snuggled my head further into the pillow, lifting Anthony's arm up and throwing it over my face to cover the small amount sun that was still hitting my eyes.

Anthony groaned and tried to take back his hand. "The suns too bright." I told him and tried to shove my head under his pillow.

"You're like an annoying dog." He groaned and turned over, taking his pillow with him.

"How would you know you won't even let me have a dog." I cuddled into his back trying to use his body as a sun block.

"The one time you actually want to cuddle is when you're hiding from the sun. Good to know babe."

"Shut up I'm trying to sleep." I smiled and snuggled further into him, my arms encircling his arm as I used him as a pillow.

I could myself about to drift off into a long and peaceful sleep when the phone started blaring. "You have got to be kidding me," I shoved my head further into the mattress like an ostrich did the ground. "How many times do I have to tell you to turn your phone off during sleep time!"

Anthony kicked me under the covers. "It's not my ring tone, you psychotic nut."

Oh. I combat rolled out of bed until my body was abruptly met with the carpeted floor. I felt around on the floor, feeling for my jeans from yesterday where my phone still remained in the pocket. Getting into the walk in robe I found my pants and quickly answered the call.

"What?"

"Skylar Martin?"

I quickly cleared my throat. "Yes, Hi, this is Sky."

There was a slight pause. "Hi Sky this is Debrafrom Vibe. You came in for an interview last week?"

"Yes I did." I confirmed.

"Were you still interested in the position?"

My heart paused mid beat. "Yes I am, very interested."

"Great, we'd like to offer it too."

"And I'd love to take it." I was holding my breath.

"Can you come by today and we can get you sorted?"

"Yeah that's fine."

"Great we'll see you there."

I hung up the phone, overwhelmed with the urge to jump around screaming in triumph, laugh, and possibly cry – I was still considering that one at the moment.

Getting up off the floor I ran back into the bedroom. "I got the job!" I screamed and jumped on the mattress, shaking the bed until Anthony finally woke up. "Can you believe it?! Me, they want me!"

Humanity is doomed.

Anthony groaned and put his hand over his head but I only jumped on the mattress again to make it all most impossible for him to keep the position.

Cursing, he reached up and grabbed my leg, pulling me down onto the bed so that I was sitting onto of him, straddling his stomach. I put my hands on his chest so that I didn't fall forward while I fixed my legs into a more comfortable position, curing in at his side.

"Congratulations babe." His voice was husky and rumpled from sleep. His eyes were still partly closed, his hair was a dark mess and a lazy smile stretched over his lips.

"Thanks for everything." I leaned forward and placed a small innocent kiss on his cheek.

"All I did was tell you about it, you did all the work. Trust me you're not an easy one to sell to someone."

Excuse me bitch!

My jaw dropped surprised. "What?"

His eyes widened as realized what he just said. "No I meant like, it's hard to sell yourself like that." He quickly struggled to save himself.

Note to self: Anthony is completely honest during moments of tiredness.

He took a deep breath. "I swear babe I did not mean it that way."

I pressed my lips together and pushed the voices in my mind far away, I didn't want to over think this.

Smiling a little I lifted my hand and slapped his shoulder. "Better not have." I kissed his cheek again and bounced off his lap and off the bed.

My first week at work was going...

Horrible.

Disastrous.

Absolutely vile.

Oh my god we have money to buy shoes!!

... Okay.

Each voice inside my head had multiple opinions on the matter, apparently, with my inner woman just proud that we were now rich enough to buy a pair of shoes.

Being the realist that I am however, I will admit I was off to a shaky start but I really think things are turning around. I'm being optimistic for a change.

My inner self scoffed. More like a bullshit artist.

I ignored her. It was a difficult task ignoring the biggest part of you.

... Did you just call me fat?

But I was doing a wonderful job.

You do know that by calling me fat, you're calling yourself fat right?

...Or so I kept telling myself.

I tried to keep myself focused on my job and not let my mind wonder too far ahead of everything.

Have you ever thought about butterflies?

Although it often proved difficult during meetings like this one that I was in now. My inner self was reclined back rambling on about butterflies, an idea she got thanks to the new posters that were hung around the building - meant to promote a safe and calm work space vibe. Roger, one of the central executives I work with was pitching a new idea that I was supposed to be listening too.

I mean, how do butterflies drink? Have you ever thought about it?

Again, another difficult task.

They actually drink turtle tears! Like, they bite the turtle until they cry! Cute pretty little bitches.

Um what?

It's the truth Sky look it up!

I frowned and secretly opened a new tab on my laptop and started a Google search: Butterflies and Turtles.

Sure enough, it was there.

And you doubted me.

Now I feel bad for turtles!

Slow, awkward and ugly. Sounds just like you!

I frowned at my inner self and quickly started looking at turtle websites and adoptions.

After my meeting I said my goodbyes to everyone in the office, being careful not to use their names because I still hadn't learned them all yet. It was about four pm and I decided to do some shopping, getting some food for dinner and saving a particular animal from the evil wrath of butterflies.

In trusting the help of the Hotel staff, all my bags were up in our apartment in no time. Dinner was cooking and I was admiring my latest addition to the lounge room wall.

"Now Hercules," I picked up my rabbit and showed her the new fish tank I had just set up in the lounge room. "This is Larry the turtle. Larry, this is Hercules the bunny."

The two pets started at each other for a moment. Hercules, probably attempting to work out if she could in fact eat Larry while I wasn't looking.

"Play nice my children." I gave Hercules a kiss on the head and put her back on the floor, letting her hop back outside onto the porch where her little house still remained - although she had already eaten the door off it's hinges.

I skipped back over to the kitchen and checked the oven. I was attempting a roast chicken and vegetables since it was my night to cook. Anthony only agreed to let me cook once a week on the day he worked a little later than usual and he didn't have much of a choice. The chicken was brown and the skin crispy thanks to the herbs. The vegetables were all perfect and looking good enough to rival the chicken as the dishes main event.

I was such a good cook.

Smiling I quickly turned off the stove top and oven so that I didn't over cook the food, I pulled everything off the heat and started plating up.

The table was set with three candles in the middle and a few rose petals in the center. I wasn't going for a romantic evening, but more of a 'butter him up so he doesn't get mad when he sees the massive three-ft. turtle tank in the lounge room' kind of mood.

The front door shut and I heard Anthony's keys ding as they fell onto the table by the door.

"Okay I don't smell any smoke or hear any fire alarms so I take it you ordered take out?" He spoke as he came down the hallway towards the kitchen.

I smiled brightly as he came into view. His hair was tousled from a days work and his suit crinkled in some places while a small patch of ink was visible on his tie. "Smells good babe."

"Thank you. I haven't burned a single thing."

Give yourself a pat on the back. My inner self was bored of my success and flicking through a magazine to pass the time.

Anthony came up behind me and kissed my cheek before inspecting my work. "A little heavy handed on the spices but that's alright, I can handle hot food. Well done." Another kiss.

He took the plates off me and bought them over to the table. A small smirk played at his lips when he saw how I had set the table.

"Trying to impress me huh?"

"Sure, let's go with that." I muttered under my breath and sat down to eat.

As it turns out it was a little too much spice for me to handle. I stopped eating half way and watched Anthony attempt to get through the rest of his meal, his face a little red and his glass constantly being refiled.

"I'll admit," he spoke taking our plates up to the kitchen counter while I blew out the candles. "That was much better than I thought. I think you're getting better at this whole cooking thing."

"Thanks babe." I made a bee-line for the couch and grabbed the remote before Anthony could steal from me. I bit my lip, a little nervous that Anthony might see our new addition to the family.

"How was work?" He asked me as he moved my legs and sat down, sitting my legs on top of his lap and stealing the control from my hands.

"Yeah good. I got a little distracted today but all good." I answered settling into the couch and trying to use my body to hide the tank. "How was your day?"

Anthony shrugged. "Same old."

Choosing a channel, he let his hand rest on my thigh, his fingers lightly drawing random patterns on my skin.

I smiled watching his fingers in a small little trance. It was calming and soothing.

Anthony's fingers started moving around my thigh, moving lower towards my knee and then back up to the edge of my skirt and slowly itching its way under the material.

I looked up and found Anthony's eyes burning into mine, his attention far from the TV. I gave him my best seductive smile, lowering my eye lids but still holding his gaze and rolling my tongue over my lips and pushing my breasts a little towards him. I reached out and ran my hand along Anthony's shirt buttons before hooking it around his neck. Leaning in I pressed my lips against his.

Anthony's hands were quick to move, wrapping around my body and bringing me closer towards him. His worked against mine, eagerly wanting the possession of my bottom lip.

Anthony pushed me back gently, until I was laying down on the couch. He lowered his body over me and paused, his eyes no longer on me.

"Sky," he said hesitantly. "What is that?"

I gulped. Lifting my head, a little I turned hoping that he was referring to a painting or a mark on the wall or the hole I put in the wall last week and covered up with a pot plant. But I wasn't so lucky. Anthony's eyes were glued to the turtle tank and the hand sized turtle staring at us.

"Oh, Anthony, meet Larry."
