《Lustrous》Chapter 35: Meeting Old Foes

We walked into the Guerrero household hand in hand. Anthony had dressed down from his normal business attire with grey slacks and a loose white shirt that was opened at the collar to ensure this didn't appear to be a business deal. I was wearing a white summer dress with thin straps and heart shaped bodice with small blue and purple flowers scattered across the skirt of the dress and a diamond cut out in the back.

"Just through here." Their housekeeper spoke with a small smile as she lead us out into the patio that was enclosed by white lattice.

Their house was immaculate. A big house with bright colours and expensive art works and sculptures.

"Skylar!" I turned hearing my name to find Jackie Guerrero running at me with her arms opened wide. "How are you?" She hugged me catching me a little by surprise. I hadn't thought that we bounded that well at the opera but I wasn't going to knock it.

"I'm good thanks. You're house is so lovely Mrs Guerrero."

"Oh please call me Jackie." She released me from her hug and waved off my formal communication. "I have to show you my art collections, you'll love them." She gushed taking my hand in hers and leading me off towards her art collection.

I looked over my shoulder briefly to see Anthony give me a brief wink and a smile - either for support or in mocking, which I wasn't quite sure of yet.

Jackie Guerrero was a woman of many words and she didn't need much to promote her next ramble. And I was glad that little was needed from me to prompt the next lead in conversation. After a long discussion about brush strokes and colours of famous paintings we finally joined the boys for lunch. Anthony looked well at ease as he chatted casually with Boyd being sure to avoid the topic of business all together until they had more of a bond.

As we picked at a light lunch of chicken and salad we all made light conversation. After only a few hours I excused myself from the table with the excuse of needing to use the bathroom, but really I just needed a break from the company.

I wandered back into the entryway where the air was coolest and looked around at the decorations. "This is kind of cool." I nodded as I reached out and touched a sculpture of a person, running my hand along the arm. The loud cracking sound as it broke off in my hand had my heart stopping.

"Oh my god." I panicked as the arm hit the floor making my body tip over slightly with the heavy weight, leaving me swaying in my heels.

I looked around in distress. Please dear god, tell me no one saw that.

I leave you for ten minutes and you've already had more fun without me. What is this?

Quick where can I hide this? I looked around the small entrance for somewhere to dump the large arm of stone.

There was a big ugly pot plant just around the corner.

Yes! Turned around I dragged the arm across the perfectly tiled floor and back to where the pot plant was decorating a corner. Grabbing the arm with both hands I lifted it up and pushed it into the pot, moving the shrub to cover every inch of the stone.

Taking a step back I looked at my handy work.

"You can't really see it." I nodded in approval.

Unless of course you were standing close to it then you'd probably notice the grey stone hand poking out of the top of the bright green plant.

"Minor details," I waved my hand at my inner self and continued to admire my hiding skills.

"Skylar?" I froze hearing my name. My heart pumped my blood quickly around my body as a slight tremble of panic hit me once again.

Shit they saw you!

But I was careful. I pouted, caught red handed - or should I say grey handed.

I get that. My inner self smiled feeling slightly accomplished.

You should, you live inside my head.

Taking a deep breath I put on a fake bright smile and spun on my heel to face the one who caught me. My heel slipped on the tiled floor as I spun making me stumble to the left.

Nicely done.

Shut up.

"Whoa, are you are alright?" The person asked me as they reached out and caught my arm to steady me.

"Yeah fine thank - " My words died on my lips as I stared into the beautiful baby blue eyes of the first man I said 'I love you' to. How I didn't recognise his voice before was beyond me. "Jarred?" I frowned as my face took on the most unappealing look it could possibly manage without my permission.

I hate him.

You loved him once.

Yes but I hate him now. We should have killed him when we had the chance.

I looked at the man in question. He was still as handsome as the day we meet. I had hit him with the taxi car door on Main street just outside of my father's offices, I was only twenty-two then and he was twenty-five. He was charming, so charming that I thought I was happy, I thought I had found my Prince Charming and that he loved me too. But after six months, he told me I was too much for him - I still didn't know how to respond to that simple sentence.

You could always respond by running him over with a car.

Jarred hadn't changed much. His eyes still twinkled a beautiful baby blue that I loved and his dark hair was still slightly curled no matter how much product he used to flatten it out. He seems to have bulked up a little more and - god he looks great.

He didn't look this good looking when you dated him. Why does everyone seem to get better looking with age but you?

Jarred chuckled. "You haven't changed a bit Sky. Still living inside your head."

I blinked rapidly as I focused back on Jarred. I licked my lips nervously. "I guess not. You look really different."

"Yes, well, I've been busy."

"That's nice."

Code for: Fuck off.

"Hey, maybe you could join me for a coffee, we could catch up?" Jarred offered flashing me his charming smile that used to make my knees buckle.

"I don't think that would be a good idea."

"Why not?" He frowned, looking genuinely confused.

"You dumped me Jarred. Or do you not remember that?"

He looked down at his shoes and shift uncomfortably. "I'm sorry about that Sky. I was young and stupid. We could talk about this over coffee." He pressed again.

How about I drown you in your coffee cup?

"Jarred I - " I paused hearing the door open to the side of us. Mr and Ms Guerrero entered the room with bright smiles and a just as charming Anthony behind them - he had them eating out of the palm of his hand and they didn't even know.

"Yes, we must do this again." Jackie clapped her hands together excitedly. "Oh Jarred my darling, you must join us next time, you will find Anthony and young Sky here very amusing."

Jarred frowned, his confusion mirroring my own. "Sure Mum." He spoke extremely hesitantly.

My inner self spat out her drink and started choking as I freely recoiled in disgust.

"Mum?" I frowned and looked at Jarred mean while ignoring the surprised looks on the expressions of the others in the room at my sudden outburst. "Your last name is Dayee?"

Unless he lied to you.

"My Mum Married Boyd when I was fifteen." Jarred explained. "My last name is her maiden name."

Jackie looked between the two of us extremely confused. "Do you two know each other?"

"Yes, I dated your son for six months before he dumped me because I was a little too socially impaired and mentally unstable for his tastes." I smiled sweetly at Jackie.

Her shocked expression was priceless as she turned opened mouth to face her son. "Was this while you were engaged to Camille?"

Camille? Who the fuck was Camille?!

That's it! I'm cooking him in a fucken Microwave!

"Oh you have got to be kidding me." Was all I could say, as the memories of our time together flashed in my mind.

I had never met his family and only meet two of friends by accident. How could I be the woman on the side and not even know? It's not like he was hiding me either, we took photos, we went out to restaurants.

"No, of course not. Camille was after this."

"This?" I glared at him. I wasn't a This; I was a person, who was extremely capable of planning your death and killing you myself.

"Well this has been a great afternoon." Anthony tuned in - obliviously, catching on to the ticking time bomb that was my temper. "I hope we can do this again sometime, maybe without your son though." He smiled charmingly as he tightly interlaced his fingers with mine and pulled me to his side so he could stop me if I decided to start throwing punches - which wasn't beyond my normally calm demeanour.

"Yes, that may be an great idea. I'll show you out." Boyd said as he gestured towards the door. Anthony pulled me out of the house and over to our car waiting in the driveway.

"Breathe, Sky." He whispered in my ear before he placed a small kiss on my temple.

"I am breathing." I spoke through clenched teeth as we stopped at the car doors.

Anthony rolled his eyes and opened my door for me. I climbed into the car and pouted in the front seat. A part of me hoped Boyd and Jackie chose never to invest in Anthony's company, that way, I could limit any kind of contact with my ex.

Anthony spoke briefly to Boyd - no doubt to excuse the way I behaved towards the end of that brief conversation - before he round the car and jumped in behind the steering wheel, without a word.

He started the car and began to drive off, all in total silence. I frowned and turned to face Anthony as he drove in the silence. "Aren't you going to say something?"

"And what would I say Sky?" His voice was neutral, almost calm even - this was very unexpected. I have basically ruined his deal and he is extremely calm about it. The thought disturbed me.

"Well I am expecting a long lecture about personal life and business deals being separate and how I shouldn't let my feelings get in the way of that?"

"Sky." He glanced at me. "Our engagement is a business deal that involves our personal lives, these investors will only give me their money if they are personally invested."

"Oh," I contemplated it for a short while. "You're right."

"As usual."

"So you're not mad?" I turned to face him once again.

"I didn't say that."

"Then what are you saying?"

"I'm saying I understand."

I scrunched my nose. "Really?"

"Yes Sky."

"Some girl broke your heart?"

"No but I've been slapped a few times."

I rolled my eyes. "Liar."

He gave me a soft smile and pulled out onto the freeway.
