《Lustrous》Chapter 29: Oh, to be a Couple

I didn't know exactly what to expect when I woke up this morning, but I don't think it was anywhere near this.
I had a surprisingly good sleep despite the early wake up - courtesy of the sun and very impractical curtains that looked pretty, but failed to do anything about the bright light. Anthony had respected the pillow wall and kept to his side, although he complained he didn't sleep very well with the room restriction.
As promised, Anthony was on his best behaviour. And I, well I was trying my hardest.
Breakfast went over nicely with casual conversation between us and a small introduction to the other five couples currently occupying the other rooms, all of which made me fearful of marriage even more, and judging by Anthony's tense shoulders, they had the same affect on him.
We wandered over to one of the large gazebos further out on the beach with the rest of the couples for what was called; Couples yoga. Anthony frowned deeply as he stared intently at the gazebo. His hands were in the pockets of his grey track pants and his white t-shirt hung loosely off tense shoulders.
I licked my lip nervously and linked my arm around his. His eyes snapped my way, wide and clearly surprised. "Why so tense?" I asked him giving him a brief smiled that didn't reach my eyes. "It's just yoga."
"It's never just yoga Sky." He smiled in return.
I opened my mouth to ask him what he meant but never got the words out as everyone came to a stop at the gazebo. A middle aged woman with beautifully golden skin and dark hair stood in the middle of a number of yoga mats. She smiled as we approached and quickly introduced herself.
"Welcome everyone, you can all call me Dee, come on in, take your seat on a mat with your partner." She clapped a little too enthusiastically for my liking.
Anthony took his hands out of his pockets and quickly took my hand, lacing his finger through mine and swiftly directed us to the large blue yoga mat, closest to the exit.
Kneeling down on the mat I took my hand back from Anthony and started drumming them nervously along the edge of the mat.
What am I so nervous about? How hard could yoga be?
We did some simple stretches to begin with but now, I was getting fed up. Dee's idea of couples yoga was basically Kamasutra with clothes on.
Anthony laughed a deep, hearty laugh that bought him nearly to tears as he rolled on to his back and gave way to a seemingly endless stream of chuckles.
"Shut up!" I scolded him and slapped his shoulder, which, only increased his amusement. "I think I pulled a muscle." I pouted and started evaluating my legs. Dee expected me to move one leg up and over Anthony's shoulder, and after ten minutes of protest I finally gave in and tried it. I should have continued to protest.

Dee clapped her hands again in an attempt to encourage us. "Sky, Anthony please continue." She cooed.
I rolled my eyes but didn't make any effort to move from my starfish position on the floor. Anthony chuckled again but finally managed to pull himself together and wipe away any proof of his laughing fit.
"Okay now we are going to try another position." Dee began, I am beginning to severely dislike her. "Be gentle with each other, this is all about showing each other you can support one another."
I highly doubted that, it was more of showing you were flexible enough to try out rigid fantasies.
"Sky, Anthony if you please." Dee gestured to us and Anthony had to bit his lip viciously to stop himself from laughing as everyone turned to us.
We were her new demonstration couple.
"Oh, why don't you take over I don't mind." I quickly spoke trying to get out of making a complete fool of myself.
Dee smiled a little. "Oh don't be silly Sky, now Anthony will be on his back." Dee began to give us instructions. Everyone in the group started to follow our lead, each and everyone of them red faced and embarrassed by the public notions.
Even Anthony - to my surprise - had a small hint of red on his cheeks that singled to the discomfort of the sudden attention.
Following Dee's instructions without laughing or pulling another muscle proved impossible for Anthony and I and De quickly gave up and moved on to a more 'mature' couple to help with the demonstrations.
I tried to focus on the task at hand and where to move my hands. My foot was awkwardly at my side which which taking up all of my attention. I leaned forward, rocking a little as I braced my hands on Anthony's shoulders. He had sat up from his laying down position to steady me as I couldn't seem to coordinate my limbs.
"What are you doing?" He asked me as his hands quickly moved to my waist.
"My foot is stuck." I answered not even bothering to turn and face him, instead, I was fully focused on moving my foot. "Got it!" I beamed, although the momentum from my moving foot sent me right into Anthony.
He fell backwards, landing on his back on the mat, while his tight grip on my waist forced me down with him.
"A much more comfortable position than before." Anthony looked up at me with his classic smirk, but much more amusement than usual.
The rest of couples yoga was the same awkward positions and bending limbs in directions they just shouldn't go but, it was surprisingly more fun than either one of us expected.
We sat down to lunch before our next activity and decided to do some socialising. The other couples were very varied. There was a French couple that were experiencing marital problems after only two-years of marriage. Another couple that I thought were an interesting pair were a couple celebrating twelve-years together and were trying to find the 'spark' that they had lost some time ago. I couldn't help but glance at Anthony during their stories. Where would we be when we got to that stage? Would we even get there?

The clock ticked over to ten past one and Anthony quickly excused us from the chattering group and we made our way over the back of the hotel where a counselling office was situated.
"You ready for this?" He asked he, gently holding my hand is his. It was beginning to become a habit, one I didn't really mind.
"Yeah, can't be that bad can it?"
You said the same thing about yoga.
That was different.
Not according to your track record.
"You'd think that, wouldn't you." He chuckled once again.
We walked into the small room greeted by the councillor, an older thin and tawny man in loose fitting slacks and shirt. Taking a seat on the double seater couch, I looked around the room waiting. There were a few colourful paintings on the walls, comfy cushions behind my back and soft carpet under my sandled covered feet. Anthony was a little jittery next to me. We had both changed our clothes since this mornings yoga and he now relaxed in an airy pair of grey slacks and shirt while I switched my sweaty leggings and top for jean shorts and flarry summer top.
"So how does all of this work?" Anthony questioned, as he got comfortable on the couch.he interlaced his fingers and eagerly placed them on his lap.
The councilor crossed his legs and leaned forward - resting his arms on his notepad. "Well," he began. "That all depends on you two."
"I would prefer a little more of a schedule, or guidances I guess."
I suppress my smile at Anthony's uncertainty.
"Mainly, we talk about a number of things, your relationship, any problems you may have as a couple, anything you like. The goal is to create a space for open honesty between the both of you that will hopefully follow you when you leave this room."
Open honesty? Is there such thing as closed honesty? My innerself sneered, her own thoughts on counseling laid beside Anthony's.
I slowly grabbed the small cushion and bought it to my chest for comfort, and also to hide behind should I need it.
Anthony nodded his head and gave me a sideways glance. "This should be fun." He whispered.
I rolled my eyes and pressed my lips together.
I hated counseling sessions. Too many sessions when I was younger had left their scars.
"Right," The councilor spoke clearly catching on to the borderline awkward silence. "Well I'll begin. My name is Bayron, I have been married for six years and have a beautiful little girl." He introduced himself further.
His life in nut shell.
Anthony smiled nervously. If I didn't know him, I'd say he seemed to be entertained by the prospect of couples counseling but there was no mistaking the nervous twitch of his fingers and the tense bend of the shoulders.
"Hi Bayron," he sounded a little too cheerful, clearly overshooting the 'cheerful' act. "I'm Anthony, and this is my fiancé Sky, we have been engaged for about..." He trailed off before turning towards me. "What? Two weeks? Two and half? Babe?"
"Something like that." I smiled back at him before we both turned to see a shocked Bayron.
I supposed he rarely sees couples that have only been engaged for a brief time.
"Okay," he eventually spoke in an attempt to gain some of his composure. "Well, what has been happening in your relationship?"
Anthony quickly spoke. "Sky has recently moved in with me."
"And he is a pig." I smiled as I cut him off.
Anthony pointed to me. "She is trying to make me buy a pig!"
"I just wanted one pet!"
Anthony faced Bayron, looking him squarely in the eye. "She bought a rat into my house."
"He's not a rat!" I yelled t Anthony before facing Bayron. "He's a bunny and Anthony has grown very attached."
"I lied. And he is actually a she."
"Minor detail."
Anthony turned his attention back towards me. "You don't even look after it, I'm the one who feeds it."
I faced him in answer. "You don't know what I do all day."
"I know you well enough."
"Do not!"
"Do so." He crossed his arms over his chest.
I quickly went to continue but Bayron's hands entered my vision making the words die on my lips. "Okay, why don't we all just take a soothing breath and calm down a bit?" He interrupted us.
We both did as we were told and took a long deep breath in and then released it.
"Why don't we try to find the root of your problems." Bayron suggested.
"We both know what our main problem is." Anthony informed her.
I frowned. "We do?"
Anthony turned to me. "Yeah, she's jealous because I didn't hire her."
"Oh my god!"

A Girl and Her Food
When a lost girl wakes up without a name, she quickly finds herself alone in a way that people around her can’t fix. Without a real plan and desperate to find what’s wrong with her, she thrashes and bites to stay alive. But human beings are weak things, that band together for strength, no matter who we are. Now if only she could work up the courage to ask one question... It’s normal to get stronger when you drink the blood of monsters. Right? Things to expect: - A powerful but kinda neurotic and emotional protagonist, with some degree of weak to strong. Or maybe strong to stronger, honestly. She's pretty rational and practical about things but won't always make the best decisions, so be warned if you super-dislike characters doing dumb stuff for emotional reasons sometimes. - Lots of dialogue and characterization, especially as we get more into it. It's focused on a single POV, but there might be some sections of other POVs later on, I'm not sure right now. - Magic is on the softer side, but I'll try to keep things fleshed out enough to avoid any obvious "well-established magic could have seemingly instantly solved this problem" moments. - I didn't add the mystery tag because I feel like it implies that this is a detective novel or something, but the story is absolutely incredibly opaque at times. So you'll have the most fun if you go into it trying to puzzle out the nature of events before they're explicitly explained!😇 - Also, I added the genre for completion, but it's gonna take a while to get to the romance. Please wait warmly and have some tea. Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge!
