《Lustrous》Chapter 24: The Gifting of a Diamond

I do not need to pee. I do not need to pee. I do not - shit I need to pee.

Scrunching up my nose with my pure annoyance at my bladder, I peered one eye open and looked around the room. The curtains were mostly shut with just a corner drawn back to let in enough light to see, the bathroom door was open and the light was on with Anthony's shadow cast on the wall as he woke himself up for work.

The tap turned on and I immediately cursed the sounds of running water. Why? Why do this to me?

Drip. Drip. Drip. My inner self started to whisper in tune with the water.

I groaned and turned over in the bed, laying on my back and staring up at the ceiling. My wall of pillows somewhat remained as I had attacked them during the night and basically threw them all on the floor. Why does everything I go to sleep with end up on the floor? Even as a child, my teddy would always end up either on the floor, somewhere under my bed or conveniently hidden behind my dressing table.

Almost as if it ran away from you.

My mother just used to tell me that Toy Story was real and that my teddies would move by themselves during the night.

I liked the idea.

I smiled at the memory. But, that didn't help me when I still desperately needed to pee.

I have an amazing idea!

I recoiled a little at this amazing idea. My inner self seemed a little too happy with her self - a fact that scared me.

We can break into a hospital with our awesome ninja skills and steal a bedpan, and then next time, we won't have to wake up to pee! We can stay in dreamland all day.

Break into a hospital with our non-existent ninja skills you mean?

Maybe you should sign up for some classes first.

Memories of my pervious self-defence class flashed in my mind.

"Okay so I am going to be the perpetrator, Sky, you defend yourself." The instructor informed me.

No shit, what do you expect her to do, give you her handbag?

I nodded my head took a deep breath. I got this.

I stood there with my back turned and waited for his attack. I have spent the last few weeks learning defensive moves and I was sure I could do this right.

I felt someone grab my bag from behind me and pull hard, hurting my arm.

"Ow!" I screamed as fumbled back from the force, losing my footing and quickly stepping back to stop myself from falling. My heel landed on the instructor's foot making him scream out. My eyes widened at the cry as I realised what I had done. Quickly turning around I tried to apologise. My elbow collided with his jaw as I turned.

"Oh my god, I am so sorry." I quickly apologised. The instructor fell to the floor and groaned, his hands holding his jaw and foot as his skin began to redden.

Well at least you've defended yourself.

By accident!

Sky shut up and take the compliment.

I threw the idea of taking any classes or stealing bedpans out the window as I rolled out of the bed until I fell to the floor.

Lifting myself up off the floor, I walked towards the bathroom and knock on the open door.

"Can I come in?" I questioned as I peeked around the corner.

"Yeah." Anthony called out.

The bathroom smelt strongly of after-shave as Anthony finished up shaving. His suit pants hugged off his hips nicely and his shirt was open showing his chest.

"You're up early."

"Yeah I couldn't sleep." I waved him off.

"Couldn't sleep? That is bullshit you sleep like a dead person."

"Do not!" I defended myself.

"With in twenty minutes of laying down you were spread out across the entire bed with your head next to my ear, snoring your head off and drooling like a dog."

"Excuse you, I am a lady, I do not snore."

"Oh you do. And it wasn't that cute little snore either, I woke up thinking there was a tornado ripping through the apartment."

I freely gawked at him. "What kind of a man catches a woman out on snoring?! You don't do that." I attempted to teach him some curtsey.

Men these days. No manners.

"So you mean I should just suffer in silence?" He frowned in question.

"Uh, yeah!"

He stayed silent for a moment as he pondered the idea of silence. "Oh well, a little late now."

I rolled my eyes and stepped around him, closer to the toilet that was conveniently tucked away in a room of its own.

"What are you going to do today?" He asked me with small glint of curiosity.

"Oh you know, same as every day." I nodded my head at him. "Burn some toast, break the toaster, go out and buy a new toaster so you won't know I broke the toaster, feed my bunny, buy another pet, maybe a fish, make a mess, ditch the evidence and then finish it all of that off with a movie and some lunch." I smiled enjoying the way his face dropped as I listed.

Anthony remained a little speechless as he blinked rapidly, attempting to make sense of my fast paced sentence. "You," he finally began. "Broke my toaster?"

I laughed a little at his expression as he mourned his toaster. "No Anthony I didn't break it."

I just moved the dials around so that it now burns your toast unless you sit there and watch it.

But, on the plus side, that is not breaking it.

Exactly.

"Good. I like that toaster." He nodded in approval and turned around, walking out of the bathroom and leaving me to pee in peace.

I looked at the screen with helpless eyes. There had to be easier ways to do this.

I don't even know why you still try. Aren't you sick of being rejected?

I am sick of being home, I need something and a job is a perfect start.

Maybe you should get a new hobby.

I scrolled down the jobs available in my area to find the same response from my recent application. Rejected. Rejected. Rejected. Would it kill them to use another word? I'm sorry but your application has been declined? Denied? Anything was better than 'Rejected'.

Oh I know, you could try knitting.

I frowned at my inner self. Maybe not.

No you're probably right, you'd stab yourself with the plastic stick.

"I'm not that uncoordinated." I defended myself out loud.

"Sky? You home?" Anthony called as he walked through the front door.

"Shit." I swore as I quickly closed all of my Internet tabs so that he couldn't see that I was still looking through jobs. He still hadn't written out the 'do-not-apply' list so I Goggled his name to get an idea what companies he invested in - that didn't exactly help either.

"Sky?" He called out again as he peeked his head around the corner into the study that I was seated in. "What are you doing in here?"

"I was just playing a game, roaming YouTube and stuff to pass some time." I shrugged and quickly jumped up, keeping my head down hoping he would let me pass.

Anthony held out his hand stopping me in my tracks. I peered up at him to see the curiosity blossom in his brown eyes. Walking past me, he sat himself down carelessly and opened up the search engine and then the history.

You pathetic human being, who forgets to wipe their history?

People who are under pressure okay!

My inner self shook her head disappointedly at me.

"You goggled me?" Anthony asked rhetorically as he went through everything I was doing on his computer today.

That sounded a little dirtier than it should have. You Googled me. Almost sexual.

"I uh well, technically yes, but I only did it because I needed to know what companies where on your list." I stuttered as I tried to explain.

We can use it as a new pick up line. 'You are very Googleable'. Na never mind that sounds kind of funny and you'd probably stumble over it.

Hey! I can say Googleable if I wanted too!

Try it. She dared me.

Shut up.

"Sky?" Anthony called my attention. "Because you were job searching?" He wanted clarification.

"Yes." I looked down and threaded my fingers together, nervously but mostly from embarrassment because of the long list of rejection letters Anthony was now looking at.

"Do you have your last name on your application?" He asked me as scrolled down the list.

"Of course, why?" I frowned at what I considered a stupid question.

"Take it off."

"What?"

"You are wondering why you're not getting interviews? It's because Martin isn't a name anyone wants to be in business with right now, especially not in the finance industry." He explained. "Take it off and put Renner, you'll have better luck."

"But..."

"Trust me Sky, it's the last name." He interrupted me.

I nodded at the seriousness in his eyes and thought back to my last interview. I had said my name right, I hadn't phased out or physically harmed the interviewer; the only thing that had let me down was my name. Maybe I should look at changing it?

"Are you ready?" He continued on as he stood up from the chair and started walking out of the study.

"Ready for what?" I followed him out in to the kitchen and through the apartment until he stilled by the bedroom door.

"The party? Tonight?" He raised his eyebrows in question. "Did you not see my note?"

I sucked on my lip and looked around the room suddenly finding the ceiling every interesting.

He sighed deeply and threw open the bedroom door. "Our Engagement Party is tonight so get ready, we have to be there by five."

"Engagement party? Is there any point?" I scrunch me nose as I contemplated. We were getting married sooner rather than later, why add another expense to the list?

"Sky, when it comes to my mother, I do as I am told. Now get dressed. And wear the long black dress." He ordered me as he walked back out of the bedroom.

I stared at the door with annoyed eyes.

Are you going to take that?

Hell no.

Smiling wickedly to myself I walked into the wardrobe and looked through the formal wear that I had hanging from the hangers. The black dress Anthony wanted me to wear was a simple black dress, long height and high neckline with some sparkle to it.

Ugh he wants you to look like a reflective fish with all that glitter.

"I think not." I pushed the dress aside and pulled out another. This one was an older dress of mine that I had bought - it was one of my favourites mainly because it only cost me fifty dollars on special.

Tight ass.

Excuse me if I prefer my money in my pocket than in someone else's.

Says the woman who lost twenty dollars only a few weeks ago thanks to the hole in your pocket.

That wasn't my fault.

You walked around with scissors in your pocket what did you think was going to happen?

Clearly not that.

I took a deep breath and pushed my inner-self aside. I pulled the grey dress out and quickly slipped into it. It was a full-length dress that ended at my ankles - not too long that I should run the risk of tripping on it.

No of course, that's your heels job.

It was simple, clinging in the right places and not showing any love handles or un wanted jiggle. It also held a daring neckline, showing more cleavage than I was normally comfortable with dipping down to meet my bra.

I wonder why they call those unwanted layers of fat love handles, like, are people in love supposed to grab onto them? Or was it simply because when people are 'making love' they grab onto them like handles?

Oh dear god. Focus woman.

Oh right, the dress. With the right bra, you could really pull this off.

I think that is the nicest thing I've said to myself in years.

And isn't that a sad truth.

I narrowed my eyes at my reflection in the mirror. Not the time.

Pulling out my draw filled with my bras I searched through looking for the perfect shaped cup. Choosing a laced cup that had a lower cut, I pulled it out with a plain pair of black underwear not caring too much for matching.

Putting on my outfit I kept to my classic black heels that I wear the majority of the time and added some simple black and diamond jewellery whilst pulling my hair up into a quick and messy pony tail not caring too much for perfection.

I walked out to meet Anthony who was busy feeding half a piece of bread to Herculina for her dinner.

"Okay I'm ready." I called getting his attention.

Anthony looked up at me and frowned as he looked over my attire, his eyes critically reviewing the dress and every inch of my accessories.

"I'm not happy you purposely went out of your way to prove me wrong, but, this works, well done." He praised me - well sort of.

"Thanks, I think." I frowned a little unsure.

"Here." He passed me a small box.

"What is it?"

"Open it and find out." He rolled his eyes and side stepped me so he could freshen up before we left.

I opened the box to fine a simple diamond ring; the band was black which I strangely liked with a medium sized cut diamond on the top held in place by a gold crawl.

"Your new engagement ring, don't lose this one please." Anthony informed me as he walked back into the hall with a new tie - grey, to match my dress. "Like it?"

"Yeah actually, I do." I didn't bother hiding my surprise.

"Good I spent an entire hour listening to people talk about rings and I have sworn never to do it again. Now let's go, we're running late." He stopped by the door and opened it up for me.

I quickly slid the ring onto my finger and hurried out of the apartment.

"Notice how we are always running late?" I frowned as we rode the elevator.

"I was never late to anything Skylar Martin, until I met you."
