《Lustrous》Chapter 17: Delicious Cubes of Heaven

"Oh look," Anthony sounded extremely interested as he bent down and picked up another broacher. "Honeymoon packages."

My eyes widened as I leaped forward. Standing up on my tippy toes, I peeked over Anthony's shoulder to get a better look at this broacher. It held an extremely erotic picture of a man kissing a women's neck as she absorbed the pleasure. A sign read: Just married. With the words: Honeymoon Packages, just beneath it.

Why the hell is this crap in a church?!

Oh yes, this will do very nicely!

Like hell it will!

"No." I pulled back wanting some distance from him.

"What do you mean no?" He frowned as he picked up another one and compared the two. "It looks fun."

I groaned and threw my head into my hands.

"Stop being so immature Sky." He scolded me making my head snap up, he now had my full attention.

"Oh," I snapped at him. "So now I'm the one being immature?"

"As a matter of fact, yes you are."

"Hey Anthony?"

"Yes Babe?"

"Shut the hell up!" I frowned deeply as I glared as his head, still focused on the erotic front covers of the broachers. Unlike a normal person who opens them up to read them, he was just comparing which orgasmic face he preferred.

"Mr Renner and Ms Martin?" The voice of the Priest echoed in the small waiting room as he called our names for our 'little interview'.

"Oh thank god." I jumped up off my chair and leaped forward only to be confronted by disapproving eyes.

What is he's problem?

I have no idea - oh shit.

"Thank you for your time father, my fiancé is very tired." Anthony excused me as he leaned in. "Jet Lag doesn't treat her well."

The older Priest nodded in understanding, being as gullible as the next idiotic person before he retreated into the small office. Anthony turned to me with a wide smile on his face.

"Lord's name in vein Babe, bad move."

"Go to hell." I spat at him as a deep glare took up a nice, permanent residence on my face.

Anthony chuckled as he put his hand on my lower back and all but pushed me forward. "Better watch that mouth or he'll tie you to a chair - and not at all in the fun way Babe."

Ha! They're going to try and expel your demons!

You are my demon you idiot.

Oh, right. Mouth shut Sky.

On second thoughts, that might be beneficial.

"Ms Martin?" The Priest spoke again pulling me away from my inner self - or should I say, inner demon.

"Huh?" I blinked a few times in confusion.

Great vocabulary Sky.

"The good Father asked you, if you were serious about this relationship." Anthony repeated the question, his eyes peering into mine with a threatening intensity.

I think he is a little pissed at your lack of attention.

Shut up. I don't need voices in my head right now.

"Right," I smiled sweetly at the two rather annoyed men as I turned back to the Priest. "Yes, of course I am, very committed." I nodded.

"We're very happy." Anthony added with his usual charm.

"I must say, I am not entirely convinced." The Priest said as he interlaced his fingers and looked between us once again.

Why are you even wasting your time here, just go to an easier church that doesn't care who they marry?

My mother got married in this church; it means more to me to do it here, where she once stood.

"I can assure you Father." Anthony reached out and grasped my hand before bringing my hand up to his lips and placing a quick kiss on my hand before sitting it down in his lap. "There is nothing I love more than this woman."

Don't those words just make your heart flutter?

No, they make me want to gag.

I smiled at the Priest, not daring myself to speak. His eyes flickered from Anthony and back to me. "And how long have you been together?"

Was there a right and wrong answer to this?

I think there is.

How long is just long enough?

Well this last week has put years on your complexion so technically; you've been together for years.

What is wrong with my complexion?

Ugh, the fact that you have some very unattractive wrinkles forming.

"What?!" The words slipped out of my mouth before I could stop them, earning me some suspicious looks.

"How long have you been dating?" The Father clarified.

Anthony threw me a subtle sideways glare before he continued to speak. "Almost a year. We hoped to get married on our first year anniversary." He answered with his usual charm.

"A year isn't very long."

Neither is the week we've known each other.

"It's been enough to know I want to spend the rest of my life with this," Anthony seemed to pause for a few seconds as he turned to face me with mocking glee in his eyes. "Beautiful woman."

"Yes," I finally found my voice. "I couldn't imagine spending another day without this," Brute, tyrant, asshole, narcissistic dickhead. "Charming man."

The Priest had another session of silent nodding as he interlaced his fingers and thought for a moment. Debating wether or not, he will grant us permission to get married in this church.

"I'm sorry, but I don't think I can help you."

"What?" I frowned deeply in disgust.

"Please, may I show you out?" The Priest stood up and gestured towards the door.

I scrunched up my face and readied myself to claw out the Fathers eyes but Anthony's arm around my waist put a stop to any further movements.

"Thank you for your time Father. We'll see ourselves out." Anthony stared pulling me out of the office as he whispered in my ear, "Calm down Sky."

As we exited the office I pushed at Anthony's arm to get some distance. "Leave me alone!"

"Sky!"

I stormed out of the church feeling my emotions begin to creep up on me. I needed to get a better handle on things before Anthony caught up to me.

Mother would be disappointed. She raised you a good god-loving girl and look at you now. Questioning the existence of a higher power and cursing in front of a Priest. You couldn't even get permission to be married in the same church as your mother.

I don't need this right now.

Maybe this was exactly what you need.

"Shut Up!" I shouted at that small annoying voice in my head.

"I didn't even say anything." Anthony said as he crept up behind me.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to clam myself. "Not you Anthony." I sighed as I gained the courage to face him.

He was confused, that I could tell. It wasn't a good look on him.

"I'm sorry, I just..." I trailed off unsure of what excuse to give him.

Can't even find the words to say. How pathetic of you Sylar Matin.

"Sky you have to talk to me!" He pressed. "That is the only way this is ever going to work."

"Talk about what?" I raised my eyebrows as I shook my head slightly. "What is it that you want to know exactly?"

"Anything!" He took a step forward and tried to reach out for me, but I just stepped back. "You can start with why you want to get married in a church, and why that particular church?" He pressed, his voice beginning to calm as he read my bare emotion.

I rubbed my eyes trying to distract myself as I sat down on the grass.

"Really?" He looked down at me unimpressed. "You just had to sit on the ground?"

"Yep." I put a little extra emphasis on the p and patted the ground next to me.

Rolling his eyes, Anthony awkwardly folded his frame on to the ground and relaxed on the grass beside me.

"You better start talking or I am making you scrub these grass stains out of my clothes."

"Why do you complain so much?"

"Oh I think I've met my match with you Baby girl." He winked at me.

How can he wink so well? When you do it you look like you are having a seizure or trying to stop a fly from getting in your eye.

I shuttered at the thoughts my inner self was putting into my mind of me attempting to wink.

"Are you cold?" Anthony asked me.

"Oh, No." I shook my head and took a deep breath.

"So why a church?" He tried to ask again.

"My Mum was married in this church. I thought if I got married here it would, mean more I guess?" I tried to unscramble my thoughts. "I just wanted to feel close to her again, I thought this was how to do it."

Silence. Beautiful, peaceful, silence. It was almost mesmerising to listen to the wind echo through the rafters of the old church behind us as the blades of grass tickled my skin and the light sounds of the birds chirping in the distance.

"I don't think getting married in a church is going to make you feel closer to your mother Sky." Anthony spoke after that brief moment of pause.

"How would you know?" I snapped at him.

"I don't." He didn't bother getting defensive with me. "I've never lost anyone close to me, my grandparents died when I was young and my family isn't exactly a big one. I'm just giving you my opinion Sky."

"Well it doesn't matter now, I've ruined any shot I have." I looked down and started pulling at the grass.

"Your Mum would want you to do it your own way Sky, not copy her wedding."

"My Mum wouldn't let me go through with this marriage in the first place." I muttered.

"Then she was a smart women." Anthony chuckled as he leaned back on the grass.

"So what now?" I turned to face him. It was a strange sight to see, him reclined back like that as he absorbed the sun and took a small time out from the busy life he lived.

"You find away to be okay with this, pick a different place to have the wedding - preferably not a church."

Smiling softly I stood up from the grass and looked down.

Anthony peered up at me. "What, now you get up?"

"We should head over to the bakery before Charlene and your mother go on the hunt. Or worse, chose the cake."

"I think that is the smartest thing you've said all day." He chuckled as he jumped up to his feet seemingly effortlessly and dusted himself off.

We slowly made our way back to where we had first left Charlene and Sandra, and then proceeded to search for the bakery that was supposedly a block away - according to the GPS.

"I don't see it anywhere. This stupid thing never works." Anthony threw his phone back into his suit jacket and looked around confused.

"Is the bakery called Jemma's cakes?" I questioned, slightly entertained by Anthony's small tantrum.

"Yeah why?" He frowned.

"Because it is behind you." I pointed to the building. "Kind of hard to miss if you think of it." I continued speak as Anthony turned and stared rather displeasingly at the building.

"Shut up and walk." He spat as he walked to walk into the bakery with me smiling widely behind him.

We entered the bakery and looked around at the number of small cakes and pastries. "Can I have sausage roll please?" I asked the young man at the counter.

"And a pie." Anthony nodded in agreement.

"Ignore these two." Charlene's voice charmed in putting a stop to our early lunch. I turned to her with a deep glare. "Come along you two we have cakes ready for you to taste."

"But..."

"How did the church go?" She ignored me and directed her question at Anthony.

"We decided it was a little too old for our purposes, we were thinking something a little more modern." He replied to my shock, hiding the fact that I had made a fool of the both of us and ruined any chance we ever had.

Anthony walked forward to greet his mother, placing a quick kiss on her forehead and taking up a seat at a small round table.

"You screwed it up didn't you?" Charlene turned her attention to me.

"Yep."

"Will a large donation fix it?"

"No way in heaven or hell." I told her plainly.

Charlene nodded, "Go eat some cake Sky." She nudged me forward gently.

Taking a deep breath I decided to listen to her for once. Sitting down opposite Sandra and next to Anthony I looked at the large collection of small cubes of cake for our tasting.

"Try this one first." Sandra pushed forward a light colour cake. It looks like it could possibly be a vanilla cake, or perhaps a banana cake?

Picking up the cake I put the whole thing in my mouth not caring about being lady like at all.

I started chocking. This was disgusting! Grabbing a napkin Anthony and I both spat the cake out and continued to chock.

"This is fucken disgusting!" Anthony spoke a little too loudly making a few people turn their heads towards.

"Ugh I can't believe you let me put that in my mouth." I shook my head trying to rid myself of the taste.

"Bet you've never said that before." He muttered only loud enough for me to hear.

I looked up and frowned. "What?"

"Never mind Sky, Never mind." He chuckled as picked up the next piece of cake, this one a darker one.

"You taste it first, I don't trust your mother." I whispered.

"I heard that young lady and that was a pear cake, it is rather nice with a sweet tea." Her lips twitched upwards as she bit back a small smile.

"Pears don't belong in cakes."

"And neither do vegetables." Anthony put in. "This better be chocolate."

"Stop whining and eat children." Sandra scolded us as she began shuffling through a number of papers.

I watch Anthony's reaction as he hesitantly bit into the dark coloured cake. His nose twitched a little but he didn't gag. "It's chocolate." He nodded towards me, encouraging me to try it.

Anthony waited until I bit into it before continuing. "Really dark chocolate that is so rich it is disgusting."

I raised my check bones as I tried to deal with the flavours.

My inner self simply leaned against the wall of my brain and kept pressing the 'gag' button trying to make me spit out the cake.

It was a nice cake, moist and fluffy but it was so strong. Not like the previous pear flavoured cake where the taste was what made you throw up, no, this was an intense taste.

Closing my jaw shut I finally managed to swallow the cake, my eyes focussing on Anthony as he sculled a bottle of water. "Give me. Now." I snatched the water and start trying to wash my mouth out.

"Mother, I love you but are any of these actually editable?" Anthony asked, clearly annoyed.

"Jenna is one of the best bakers in the city." Charlene defended as she finally joined us at the table with another tray of cake cubes.

"And besides," Sandra continued. "It was very entertaining to watch your reactions. Here are the nice cakes." She pointed to the new tray Charlene had bought to the table.

I pouted at the two and took another long sip of water. I now understood what Anthony had said about his mother only moments ago, the woman was the devil in disguise.

Anthony bit down on his tongue and shook his head clearly unimpressed with his mother's antics and picked up another piece of cake.

Four more cakes later and I was in love with chocolate cake. So in love in fact, I considered swapping my newly acquainted fiancé for an endless supply of the delicious cake.

"Sky do you want to help us pick table settings?" Sandra asked me as I filled my little plate with more chocolate tasting cubes.

"Like candles and flowers?" I frowned in question.

"Not necessarily there are a lot of different styles."

"Oh like the rose petals." Charlene added.

"I hear fish bowls are the new thing."

"Or even a little lily in a glass vase." The two women conversed.

I looked between the two of them. "I think you two can handle it. I trust you." I faked a smile, not believing my own words. I didn't really care what they put on the tables.

"You're game." Anthony muttered next to me.

"I'm sorry, do you not trust me, son?" Sandra narrowed her eyes at her son as she over heard his little mutter.

"I never said I didn't." He quickly rushed to his own defence. "So where exactly do we order this cake?" He quickly tried to shift the conversation.

Sandra pulled out a small piece of card and began filling out the contact information. "Have you decided on a flavour?"

"Chocolate." I smiled at the same time Anthony called out "Vanilla."

I turned to him and narrowed my eyes. "Don't mess with a girls chocolate."

"Don't mess with a guys Vanilla." His eyes flickered a little uncertain with his recent come back.

"Tick chocolate Sandra."

"Everything alright over here?" Another woman approached the table much to my dismay. This small table was getting rather crowed at the moment.

Personal space people, have you never heard of it? Back up and give the lady some room!

I took a deep breath, attempting to bite back the small anxious feeling.

"Just arguing over the flavour of the cake Jenna." Charlene in formed her with a forced smile.

Jenna smiled brightly as she looked between the two of us. "Chocolate or vanilla?"

"You guessed it." Anthony smiled.

"I have just the thing. It's a choc-marble. Both your favourite flavours, not too sweet or heavy but still with that chocolate goodness." She reached for a plate and handed it to us. It was basically a vanilla cake with a chocolate swirl through it.

Shrugging at the offered compromise Anthony and I both took a bite of the cake.

Dear god this is heaven in a small cube.

Don't you think it's a little sad how you get so much pleasure out of a small piece of cake?

Maybe?... Or I can just get a big cake then it's no longer sad!

The bigger the better!

Exactly!

"Yep this one." I spoke with a mouthful letting a stray crumb or two fall off my lips.

Anthony nodded, still attempting to chew the cake instead of talk around it.

"Perfect." Jenna clapped her hands together excitedly.
