《Lustrous》Chapter 1: First Impressions are Ever Lasting

What the hell am I thinking?

This was insane. Completely and utterly in-frigen-sane.

But where you ever sane to begin with? I mean seriously, let's face the facts here you've been questioning your sanity long before this moment.

And now I'm talking to myself, great, just fine and dandy. I shook my head in an attempt to clear it of all thoughts but froze when I realized that looked like a horse trying to rid themselves of a very annoying fly on a hot summer's day. Just perfect.

So to sum up you're a mentally insane horse with a fly problem?

Shut up, you're supposed to be helping me here! I scolded my inner self as she just leaned up against the wall and casually regarded me as if I wasn't determining our future.

Oh that's right the 'peep talk' we were supposed to be having, right. She smiled at me and mocked an apologetic bow. Breathe Sky, you can do this, just take some deep breaths and - oh look there's an ant on your shoe!

Ant? What? I frowned my brow and leaned forward falling half off the chair from the fastness of my actions and leaving me bent down with my hands on the floor to prevent me from falling any further and my butt beginning to lift up off the chair.

"Skylar Martin?" a feminine voice sounded from just in front of my awkward position.

Quick tell her you were just practicing your yoga, these people love yoga.

"Uh, yes that's me." I stuttered and stumbled over my own words as I quickly jumped to my feet and wavered a little on my tall heels that threatened to break my ankle by the end of the day. I smiled at the middle aged lady in front of me as she regarded me suspiciously. She was very pretty with curly blond hair and crystal blue eyes that I envied as well as a slim figure with just the right amount of curve to it to make it perfectly attractive to the opposite sex.

You remember that long ass lecture mother gave us about first impressions is everything? Yeah well you should have listened more closely.

I closed my eyes briefly as I prayed to whatever mighty deity would listen that I didn't make any more mistakes, that all of my 'issues' and clumsiness would be forgotten here and now and I could at least give a good interview. Perhaps even leave a lasting impression on the poor hopeful I was about to beg for employment.

When I opened my eyes once again I took note of the look of the woman's face; it screamed annoyance and irritation and that is when I realized that I had my eyes closed for longer than I had first considered.

Maybe you should just walk out now, if the interview hasn't even started yet can you only imagine what was going to go wrong when you actually get in there?

I could. The flashes of every possible thing that could go wrong soon flooded my vison, as if playing out like a film in the background just behind the woman who was still waiting for me to collect myself which at this rate would take me to the end of next week.

Focus Sky.

I smiled again at the lady and nodded. Why I had no idea but the uncertainty in her eyes made me feel like a nod was expected of me. She frowned deeply at me and stepped back a little.

Maybe that was wrong move? Ha she probably thinks your some creep now!

I internally rolled my eyes at my inner self and began to follow the poor woman I had permanently scared and creped out over towards the elevators. I entered in after her and she pressed the button that had the gold letters CA engraved on it while the other buttons were plain silver letters and numbers. I pressed my lips together and tried to focus my thoughts and calm down my nervous but it seemed that as always they were getting the better of me.

It was a strange place for me to apply for a job. 'Lustrous' was a chain of hotels that was quickly taking over the five class society around the world with hotels opening up from England all the way through to Japan and the CEO of the company is in search of a new assistant - which hopefully was where I come in. Although the job was so far out of my league it should be in a different solar system, I was determined to give it my best shot and at least interview for the job. I had made it through the first three rounds on the basis that they liked my determination and as co-workers of the CEO they believed that I would be best suited for keeping him on track.

I wasn't sure if that was a compliment or a hidden stab at my distasteful looks but I wasn't going to read into it too much.

"Nervous?" The woman next to me broke the silence pulling me out from my moment of escape and back to reality.

I turned to her and smiled shyly. "Very."

"Just take a few deep breaths and try not to be intimidated, you'll be fine." She smiled reassuringly at me but it did nothing to calm my nervous, in fact it only increased the anxiety building up in me.

Being intimidated wasn't the problem that I faced. In my previous experience with occupation I have been fine working with powerful people who could crush me like an ant and quickly adjusted to their intimidating stares, my problems were much greater than the simple intimidation. I was one of the few applicants no doubt who would be able to cope with the intimidation and successfully not flirt with the man in question but being me I was prone to little... accidents.

With a ping of the elevator I followed the woman - whose name I had yet to discover - out of the elevator and out onto the floor. The first thing I saw was a large wall that kept me from seeing anything but the golden lettering 'Lustrous Company Administration' which suddenly made me click that that's what CA stood for in the elevator.

That's all you got out of that?

We turned the corner and walked around the wall to find an interesting styled room. The walls were all painted a deep French Puce colour that looked even darker with the gold lettering on the walls that informed you of each individual office that was housed in the surrounding area which - if can count correctly - was four. Built off the make shift wall that we had to endure the walk around was a large reception desk that stood empty currently. I followed the woman over towards a door that was in the centre of the far wall and proceeded to walk through and take in my surroundings. On the other side of the door the French Puce seemed to fade and only appear on a wall here or there like a feature. We came to a stop just before the next door, this room was lined with black leather couches and another large reception desk that also stood unattended but I had the feeling that this was the position was currently about to interview for.

"Ready?" She asked me as she reached down and took hold of the gold handle.

I gulped loudly and nodded my head.

"Mr Renner is expecting you." She nodded and opened the door revealing a very... interesting office. The walls were painted such a deep colour that I'd swear they were black while the outer wall was tall floor to ceiling windows - of course, not that I expected anything less - while the furniture was all white leather and glass.

I was a little too busy looking around the room that I hadn't really noticed the man sitting down at by his desk staring at my opened mouth 'wow' face.

Yep great first impression, the man probably thinks your codfish already. Maybe he'll let you try it again, oh you could try the famous entrance and flip your hair back - oh wait it's in a bun, never mind.

I licked my lips nervously and made my way further into the room and sat down in the chair just opposite him while he regarded me with a coy expression. "By all means, take a seat." He gestured with his hand and flashed a very annoyed fake smile.

Oops.

"Oh I apologise if I offended but I didn't think I'd waste your time by asking to sit down during an interview. Would you like me re-enter?"

Please say yes so we can do the hair flip thing.

"Not at all Ms...?" He tilted his head slightly and observed me as he spoke, waiting for me to fill in my name even though I had no illusions that he did know exactly what it was - after all my resume was right in front of him.

"Martin."

Well at least you didn't screw up your name, so not your worst beginning ever, let's see how long it takes you to screw it up.

"Well then Ms Martin, shall we begin?" He raised an eye brow questionably at me as he rested his head on his thumb and for finger. It was then that I noticed what he looked like. His dark hair was slick back in an old fashion style while his average muscular build hid behind a dark grey suit and black tie and his light brown eyes twinkled like little golden suns.

Hm, very nice. I could get used to this view.

"Ready when you are Mr Runner." I smiled.

His face dropped and his eyes narrowed all of sudden which despite my surety made me almost flinch back and recoil in my seat.

"It's Renner." He clarified through clenched teeth.

I closed my eyes briefly, mentally slapping myself for my stupidity and looking back at the man in question, his eyes were now darkening in anger making his bright eyes that only a moment ago shined like suns fade and die into a cold pile of nothing.

"Of course, so sorry Mr Renner." I corrected myself.

He rolled his eyes and shifted looking a little uncomfortable with this situation and he began flipping through a copy of my resume that was situated just in front of him. My inner self was currently switching between staring at the man and curling up into the foetal position on the floor and laughing at me.

You forgot the man's name! It probably would have been better if you had of forgotten your own!

She laughed, running out of breath while I started to feel a glare heat up my skin making me focus on the here and now. Mr Renner was staring at me slightly confused as he watched me cautiously.

It's okay, I'm not insane I have just misplaced thoughts and morals.

"I'm sorry did you say something?"

"Before we continue I would like to ask you a series of what you may consider very unprofessional and possibly inappropriate questions." He said sternly and quickly while sitting up with a straight posture and interlacing his fingers that were now leaning on the desk in front of him.

Inappropriate? Unprofessional? Well hello Mr hot stuff what kind of inappropriate questions are we talking about? Slightly Sexual perhaps?

I shuttered at the thoughts my inner self was taking me too. I had certainly read too many romance novels. "Yes of course." I nodded and prepared myself for the unexpected - although how one could prepare themselves for the unexpected was beyond me.

"Are you mentally ill?" He asked me calmly as if it he was inquiring about the weather.

"What?" I gaped at him, clearly showing my surprise at his question.

Oh o, he's onto us. Quick run out of the room before he calls the cops. Abort!

"Are you mentally ill?" He repeated.

"What kind of question is that?"

"You were sitting there muttering to yourself for about five minutes Ms Martin and you made the mistake of pissing me off by getting my name wrong, so let's be frank."

Ha he wants to be Frank, okay if he's Frank I shot gun being Matilda.

"I'm simply just nervous, I never interview well but I assure you I'm good at my job and I'll be the best suited for this position." I tried to salvage the situation.

"I cannot afford sloppy mistakes from my staff and clearly you are prone to them."

Shit, do something.

"Please, perhaps if we start again?" I suggested but I could feel the end nearing like a light at the end of tunnel.

"As you mentioned earlier Ms Martin, my time is precious and I don't entertain."

"I never said your time was precious." I said plainly allowing all of my innocence and disappoint seep into my voice.

"Well it is, shall I show you out?" We both stood from our chairs.

"It was nice meeting..." I started but stopped the minute I moved my hand to shake his hand in a bid for goodbye when my hand clipped his coffee mug and the hot liquid flew at him, drenching his groin area and sliding down his pant leg. My hands flew to my mouth as I gasped and looked down watching as the stain ruined the expensive material. "Oh my god, I am so sorry I didn't..."

"Just leave." He interrupted me and started walking over towards the door, opening it up for me to walk through.

Just as I was about to walk out I quickly turned around to apologize once again but I quickly lost control of my handbag letting it fly up and hit the man in the face. He cursed and stepped back from me, his hands flying up to hold his nose.

Run. Run now and run fast.

"Oh my god, I am so sorry" I tried apologizing again and moved to help him but he quickly pulled back from me.

"You have three seconds otherwise I'm throwing you in jail for assault." He warned me and that was all I needed. In a quick flash I took the advice of my inner self and started running for the elevator yelling another 'I'm sorry' over my shoulder and exiting the building.

When I made it down to the ground floor I slowly walked out of the building vowing to never enter it again and put my head in my hands.

Well not your best interview but hey, it wasn't your worst.

I took a deep breath and decided I would wallow in my failed attempts of employment later tonight with a bucket of ice cream to join me. Walking over to the curb I yelled out for a taxi and waited patiently hoping that I wouldn't break anyone else's nose before lunch.
