《The Red Sun》Chapter 10

Thalia, Gabriel, and I ran down the mountain, this time away from the village, in search of someone to help us. I didn't know who though.
"Alexander, where are we going?" Thalia asked me.
"I don't know, none of our friends are here anymore, there's nowhere to go, we just can't go back there!" I yelled, still running down the mountain.
"We can't just hide the rest of our lives!" I stopped running and so did she.
"Well, where should we go? My parents are most likely locked up somewhere, your mom is locked up in a cage somewhere, Tareche is who knows where, and I don't know anyone else we can turn to. The king hates monsters, too, so we can't even go there!" I slumped up against a tree. A few moments passed before Gabriel finally spoke up.
"Um... 'scuse me, but I may know someone." he chimed, "You get to 'ear a lot a' roomers when you're someone like me, and I once 'eard there was an ol' hermit who lives in the forest east of the village. I 'ear he's really good at situations like this.
"Ok, that works, let's go there! Right now, it's our only hope and I don't know what else to do." I was kinda freaking out here, I had no idea what to do and this seemed like an only option. I was desperate. I got up and kept running, this time orientating myself more east, and I just ran. Thalia and Gabriel kept up behind me, barely.
As we ran, and eventually walked, I thought of everything that happened, everything that could happen, and... everything that could have happened. We must have walked for an hour in complete silence before Gabriel finally spoke.
"I think we should turn 'ere. They said four miles east, then 'alf a mile south." I didn't know what to expect. He could be sending us on a complete and utter wild goose chase, and we would have no idea. Yet, I turned with him and kept on walking. I could do nothing else.
"So, what do you know about this guy?" I asked, trying to break the silence.
"Well, people think he's kinda crazy, and he really doesn't like people, human or monster."
"Speaking of, which is he?" Thalia asked, adding in herself.
"He's a monster, I think, skeleton, maybe." He seemed very unsure as if not exactly knowing it.
We kept walking, a little bit of small talk here and there, until we got to a small cottage next to an open clearing. I saw smoke coming out of its small chimney, so whether or not someone was in there was no question, it was whether or not he'd want us to know that was the real question.

I walked up to the door, and slowly knocked. I heard no reply.
"We can see the smoke, we know you're in there!" Thalia suddenly yelled at the door.
"I'm contemplating life, go away," replied a voice from inside. I tried opening the door, but it was locked.
"We really need your help!" I yelled back.
"And why should I help you? Why should I not just sit back and ignore you?" He replied antisocially.
"Because this involves magic and the entirety of monster kind." I yelled back. Suddenly, the door swung open. In front of us we saw a skeleton wearing a brown leather jacket, what looked like rabbit hide pants, and not much else. The only flesh he had in his entire body, were the two eyes sticking out of his skull.
"Did you say magic?" he asked. I nodded my head. "You are the only thing that's been different since the reset, and the only way another reset could have happened is if magic is coming back."
"Reset?" Thalia asked. The skeleton looked very confused.
"Isn't that why you're here, magic's returning and time is skipping and you think you're the only ones who know about it."
"Well no, actually, we know of no time jump, and we've been being chased by a group of humans who have been using magic to trap us because we can use magic." Thalia replied. I knew I should say something about the time jump, I just didn't know what.
"Well, if you're not here because of time, I can't help you." He started closing the door, but I finally spoke up.
"Wait," I said, "They don't know this but I did experience a time jump, right before getting hit in the face with a massive rock." His eyes suddenly lit up, and the door swung back open.
"Okay, come in, people are probably still looking for you now, you wouldn't want them to find you now, would you." We stepped in, and he abruptly shut the door behind us. He motioned for us to sit down on a couch in the middle of his one room house. His house was very minimalistic. It had old wood as walls, flecks beginning to chip off, and a small fireplace in a corner. There were a few mini countertops and cabinets scattered around in a corner that could have been considered a kitchen. There was a small bench with a few chairs scattered around, all facing the fireplace with a table in the center of the room.
As we sat down, he then starting talking, "So, tell me more about the reset you saw, what were you doing then, what had occurred before it?"
"Yeah Alexander," Thalia added, looking at me, accusing me, "Tells us more about this... reset."

I blinked and shook my head, sincerely hoping Thalia wouldn't turn against me, after tangenting time .
"Well, Tarran, a human that's been stalking us for a while, had me trapped in his magic, or something, and," I stopped, the image of Thalia's dead body flashing over my mind. I had to keep going, though. "um... he said I was, uh, bonded to some old things, and, um, the only way to break the bond was to kill me."
"Okay, okay," The skeleton replied, "What about the time you reset to, what were you doing then?"
"Um... we were talking with Tarran and he wanted my help, yet now I know all he wanted was to kill me. He was about to attack us, so Gabriel teleported us out of there."
"Teleported?" He asked
"Well, yeah," I replied, not too sure whether I should be telling him this, "We all have started to have magical abilities, mine is ice, Thalia's is fire, and Gabriel is teleportation."
"Yet, before Alexander goes on, how do we know we can trust you?" Thalia cut in, "I mean, we don't even know your name."
He sighed "If you must know, it's Calibri and I'm one of the only people who can tell when there has been a reset. It's why I live so simplistically, you never know when it's all going to be reset."
"So why do you live alone? Why don't you tell someone else about this, or just ignore it?" Thalia asked.
He sighed again. "I tried that, it's what I did originally, actually. I was a hunter for my village, a small village north-west of here, and had an old bow. Upon coming home one night and walked into my house, and no one was there, not even my wife. All the candles were still lit and the fire in the fireplace was stilling going, which worried me. I did the only thing I could, and drew an arrow back on my bow. My front door then opened and I pointed the bow directly at it. Seeing it was only my wife, Merissa, getting more firewood from behind the house, I quickly lowered the bow and apologised to her."
He paused for a second, breathing very hard, "A while later, I was at the river near the village catching fish. I had hands outstretched wide, ready to sink my hands in to grab a fish. After I had caught the first one, I was about to release it onto the ground, when..." He choked on his words a bit, this obviously being a very hard topic for him, "when a reset happened to right while I was pointing the bow at Merissa a few weeks before. Instead of releasing the fish, I released the bowstring and sent a shaft flying right into Merissa's heart." He kept breathing heavily and rubbed his eyes a few times, "I then waited for a reset to happen outside of my village, here. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, until a reset finally did happen, but it was not to when I was drawing the bow, but instead to after that. After that I knew I had no hope, beauce reset points can either stay the same place, or move forward, you can never move the points back."
He wiped his face with his hands, "After that, I just kept living here incase I endangered someone else, and hurt them. Solitude is better than loss, loss that I myself made. I killed my wife, and I will not kill anyone else." He closed his eyes and sunk back into one of his chairs.
"I'm so sorry... I... I..." Thalia sobbed, trying to comfort him, best she could. I suddenly thought of what would have happened if I couldn't have saved Thalia. I just... I wouldn't know what to do.
"It's fine," Calibri replied, sitting up, his face sparkling with salt. "You had no idea what you were asking, and I had no idea it would tole me this much after so many years." He sighed, "But you know what, I can't help my wife, I might as well help you guys. There's no fear of killing anyone now, with you being the one able to reset."
"I'm sorry, I wish there was some way I could help..." I empathized.
"The only way you can help me now is by making sure you never time jump again, EVER!" Calibri commanded me, "There are other people like me out there, I know it, and the less times you jump, the less people get their lives ruined. Also, if someone dies enough times, even after resetting, they're not the same. It's fine for the first few resets, but after a while, their memory fades, and everyone else forgets about them, too." I thought of Thalia and how she was acting just a little bit different, just subtly with like, the way she walks or the tone of her voice. It did seem unnatural for her. Just, what if she were to die again, what would happen? I just didn't want to think about it, and so I was half relieved when Calibri finally said: "Now, let's get this training going, shall we?" His change of vocal tone was very unnatural, almost disturbing that he could go from so serious to so... vigorous so quickly.
