《A Twist to Our Futures (Killua X OCs X Gon)》Greed Island - Chapter 1

"What were you guys doing back there?" I asked when my orange-haired sister and the spiky greenish dark-haired boy ran into the room, where Killua and I were waiting for them when we found Battera, the winning bidder.

"Oh, uh...we were just talking." Lizzy awkwardly answered, scratching her head and blushing madly.

"Hmmm..." I observed that red face of hers with a suspicious look. She gulped and tried her best to get herself together. Then my eyes landed on their intertwined hands.

She realized where I was looking at and quickly let go of Gon's hand, causing him to pout at her.

What? Did she confess to him already? Dammit, I wish I had the confidence to tell Killua how I feel. Then I wouldn't have to be so jealous of my own sister starting a happy relationship with Gon.

I looked pretty ticked off. Not because I didn't want her to be romantically involved with him, but because I wanted to do the same with Killua. Ironic, right?

"Okay, now that we're all here, we're willing to help clear Greed Island." The silver-haired boy offered, but four men stepped in front of us. "That's real funny. Now, go home, you kids."

"We're not joking! I'm a Pro Hunter!" Gon slightly yelled.

"Yeah! Me too!" Lizzy replied, trying to sound serious.

"Sure you guys are. Do you have a license?" Battera asked, stepping out from behind them.

"Yeah! I got it right here!" She pulled out her Hunter License and showed it to him. He observed it with interest.

"Hmm, how fascinating. How about you, young man?" He looked at Gon, expecting the same for him.

"Yes, sir." The dark-haired boy said.

"Uh, no you don't. It's at the pawn shop, remember?" Killua reminded him, and he was stunned. "I don't have it on me."

"Oh, man." Lizzy sweatdropped.

"See? I knew he was lying!" One of the men claimed.

"No I'm not!" He replied back.

"Hold on a minute. The fact that you're here at the auction tells me that you four are no ordinary kids. However, I cannot take your word at face value. I am indeed looking for professional Hunters in order to clear this game, but I cannot hire either of you at this time. Because there's limit to the number of players you'll see." The old guy explained.

"A limit...to the number of players?" Lizzy asked.

"Each memory card only has the capacity to store one player's data. With multitaps, you can have a maximum of eight players per console." He stated.

"Oh, right. That Greed Island save used up all thirty blocks on that memory card, remember?" Gon mentioned the time when we first heard about the game.

"Oh, yeah." I replied.

"How do you know that?" Battera asked, surprised by the reference to our save file.

"We have a Greed Island save file, so we figured it out." Gon stated.

"And what about the game itself? Have any of you played it before?"

"No, we only have a memory card."

The old guy's eyes show a hint of realization. "If the memory card you're talking about is real, you would need something else in order to remove the card from the console."

"Wait. Doesn't he mean..." Lizzy started.

"It's the ring!" I finished, remembering about the items Ging left Gon after the latter became a Hunter and found out about them.

"Hmm...It appears that these boys and girls are worthy for consideration." He asserted.

A middle aged man with black, slicked-back hair wearing an Air-Force style combat suit stepped out, his expression sober. "I assume you know Nen. Show me your Ren."

We all smiled brightly and nodded.

"Okay!"

We activated our Ren and waited for the middle aged man to answer. We would easily pass by simply perfoming a single task we knew how to do.

"What do you think?" Battera turned to the man.

"I'm afraid it's hopeless." He shook his head. "Hiring them would be a complete waste of time. They'd simply run around in circles until they died."

"How can you know if we haven't even tried?" Gon snapped, pissed of the man's judgment.

"You can't just judge us from our looks! Let us have a shot of completing the game!" Lizzy demanded.

"It'll be too late once you're inside the game. Better to die off immediately." He strictly spoke. "You'll only drag out the inevitable. You see, as long as someone is inside the game, you can't reset or remove the memory card. In other words, it's impossible to send in new players."

"I've hired around one hundred professional and amateur Hunters to play this game, and over half of them have already given up." Battera stated.

"They've given up?" Lizzy asked.

"Yes. On returning to the real world, that is. They would otherwise choose to live their lives inside the game. That is why I must be careful when selecting players. We need players who are strong enough to obtain items and return them safely to the real world." He explained.

"Are you trying to say that we're not strong enough?" Gon lashed out at the two men.

"This is bullcrap! Who else wouldn't be strong enough to play one stupid game?" I retorted.

"Yeah, why does he think we can't do it?" Killua complained.

"Because he is a professional Hunter who has played Greed Island before." Battera stated. We then gasped at the fact.

"Speaking from my own experience, the items we wish to bring back are relatively easy to obtain. But with your Nen, it's hopeless. As a matter of fact, it'd be game over for you in no time." The man implied, and Gon grew more irritated. "Once the screening is done, I'll be returning to the game."

"Screening? You're gonna be screening players while you're here?" Killua asked.

"That's right. The screening will start on the final day of the auction. So if you're interested in participating, I recommend that you work more on your Nen."

"We were gonna do that anyway! C'mon Killua, girls. Let's go." Gon took my sister's hand and started walking away with her. My eyes were filled with discontentment as I followed them out of the room along with Killua.

"Before you go, how did you come to have a memory card?" He asked.

"I'm not telling!" The dark-haired boy talked back and left the room with us following him.

"Damn it. Those jerks! They piss me off." Killua grumbled, sharing the same expression as we did.

"We definitely have to pass their screening, now!" Gon insisted.

"Exactly! We can't let them get in our way of playing Greed Island!" Lizzy exclaimed, her voice filled with determination.

"Who thinks our Nen isn't strong enough? That scumbag! We'll prove him wrong!" I swore, frustrated by the man's judgment.

We would definitely pass this screening.

"Ugh! I can't believe he treated us like crap! Damn it!" Gon yelled, his aura spiking with his anger.

"Woah, calm down, Gon." Lizzy tried to put him at ease, moving her hands around in front of her.

"Yeah. But you've got to admit that he's right." Killua told him.

"What do you mean?" The spiky-haired boy snapped.

"Just chill out. We all should start thinking about taking this to the next level." He grinned and licked his lollipop.

"Next level? What are you talking about?" Gon asked, deactivating his aura.

"Hatsu. Our special abilities."

"Huh?" Lizzy tilted her head in confusion.

"Think about it. Kurapika learned Nen around the same time when we did. Because of his abilities, he was able to fight the Troupe." He explained.

"Yeah. Kurapika obtained special powers that basically made him invincible by placing his life on the line." Gon stated.

"That was his Limitation. He chose to put his life on the line to greatly increase the strength of his abilities. Without it, it wouldn't have worked against the Troupe." I explained.

"How would you know?"

"Conjurers can create Limitations to strengthen their abilities. Their properties can come closer to exceeding human capacity, although they cannot surpass it. Kurapika's chains can restrain the Spiders and easily kill them by violating a condition he gives them. Putting his life on the line must've gave him a big power boost. We don't want to do that."

"That's right. We need special abilities that fit our specialties, and minimize the risk." Killua added. "Something practical and effective. That's what we'll need to come up with."

"Hmm..." Gon sat down and pondered, smoke coming out of his ears. I sweatdropped and Killua sighed.

"I figured that would happen." He said, knowing about his difficulty thinking hard. "Let's take this one step at a time. First off, what kind of abilities do you want to have?"

"You're an Enhancer, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find the right ability for you." I assured him.

"Hmmm..." Poor boy couldn't think of anything, more smoke coming out of his ears.

"Oh my God. You have to at least think of a simple, vague idea that's clever!"

"Uh, a really strong power!" He said out loud.

"Too vague! Think about your own category. What can you enhance? What part of you do you want to strengthen and how will you use it?" I asked.

"Umm..." Again, Gon's ears emitted smoke, and I facepalmed. Killua hit his head, making him cry out in pain.

"Oww! That hurt!" He winced, rubbing the area where it hurt. "What about you? What ability do you guys want then?"

"I already have an idea planned." Lizzy spoke up, holding up a finger.

"Really? What is it?" The innocent boy beamed.

"I'm not telling ya!" She taunted, and he whined and pouted at her. "Why must you use my remarks against me?"

"Oh, come on! I wanted it to be a surprise for you! Besides, how can you ask someone who doesn't share the same category as you? I might be no help to you." She shrugged her shoulders.

He groaned and dropped to the floor, spreading out his limbs.

"What about you, Killua?" He got back up to look at the silver-haired boy.

"I already know what I want." Killua stood up. "That's why I'm helping you now. We all are helping you."

"Really? What is it that you want?" Gon asked, eager to know about his ability.

"It's a secret." The ex-assassin answered and licked his lollipop.

"Aw, come on! Why won't you guys tell me?" He whined.

"Gon, I'm gonna go practice my special ability now. You keep thinking about yours. If the girls and I train hard, it's possible that you'll be the only one who doesn't pass the screening." With that said, he left the room, leaving us with the overwhelmed male.

He sadly moaned. Lizzy wrapped an arm around his neck to lighten up his spirits. "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll come up with a great idea for your special ability. You know how I got mine?"

"Huh?" Gon turned to look at her, his curious eyes glimmering.

"I thought of something I experienced. That's what my Nen ability will be based on. Think of something you've learned or experienced and make it happen. I believe you're gonna be a powerful Nen user, especially if you train very hard." She gave him a reassuring smile, which he gladly returned. He got back to thinking, which actually ended up releasing more smoke from his ears. She got stunned and sweatdropped.

"Okay, why don't we let him take his time to figure out something? Come on, let's work on our abilities." I suggested, and she nodded and followed me out of the room, leaving him all alone to deal with the thinking.

I conjured my four rings on my right hand and began to visualize the elements I was using. I could only use my water and wind rings since there was no point of using my fire and earth rings if I wasn't fighting a dangerous opponent. My attacks weren't that powerful, so I had to keep training in the Transmutation category.

Lizzy let out a focused grunt as she tried to make her baton move using her mind. It wasn't moving a single inch, and she breathed out a big sigh.

"I don't get how you learned your ability in less than a single night!" She complained.

"Perhaps you should focus more on your training rather than hanging out with Mr. Innocent." I sarcastically replied. A faint red could be seen on her cheeks, and pouting made her really cute. "We were captured and held hostage by the Troupe. Does that count as hanging out?"

"I am implying that the more time you spend doing something else than training, you'll never be strong enough to pass the screening." I explained. "The auction ends in four days, so if you want to help Gon, you have to develop your Nen ability that's powerful enough to help clear Greed Island."

"Okay, then I will continue training!" She went back to focusing on making her baton move. So far, nothing had improved with her training. She was determined to help the boys find Ging, and I wanted to make sure she was safe wherever we went. I wouldn't let her leave my side.

The long weapon still hadn't moved, and she tried her best to focus on it. She sighed, and I shook my head.

It's going to take a long time for her to master her new ability. I don't know what we'll do if we don't pass the screening with the boys. She has to hurry up, otherwise she'll be left behind.
