《Destined》Escape to the tunnels

"What's your name?" I ask her, glancing back and fourth at the door hoping Harley nor his men will come and check on us.
"Jaclyn" Her voice is fragile and the idea of what she must have been through breaks my heart.
The omega that changed me, this is her. From the bruises and marks on her skin, I can only imagine that Harley doesn't treat his omega's very well. Why does the not surprise me?
I want to tell her that she will be safe in my pack. That no one will be able to hurt her ever again once we are out of here. But I can't. I don't know how we will get out of here.
I don't know if we will even be able to get out alive. But I am sure as hell going to try.
"Is there anyway out of here that isn't heavily guarded?" I shift on my feet, trying to ignore the cramping in my stomach, but it is really uncomfortable.
What if Harley was right and the Goddess transferred my heat to Reed? Does that mean the there are unmated females trying to mate him right now?
If there are, he better be loyal to me, because I have had a bad day and if I make it back in one piece to find him mating another she wolf.... I will kill a bitch.
Whoa, where did that come from?
"Um, there's the tunnels but -"
"Do the men go down there?" I cut her off impatiently, grabbing her hand in desperation.
I don't care what the tunnels are. I don't care why she looks like she has seen a ghost. If the tunnels can get us back to my pack, back to Reed, they will work.
She shakes her head slowly and that is good enough for me.
"Okay, then that is our best shot." I try to give her a reassuring smile, but I don't know how it really went over.
I mean we still have to get out of this room and get to the tunnels, but a little optimism never hurt anyone.

"How do we get there?"
"There is an entrance at the end of the hall." My shoulders drop at her words. I don't know where we are in the hall, but it might as well be a mile from here. How are we going to get there unnoticed?
All that optimism I was working with, is slowly draining out of me. It's like sunset, beautiful while it lasted, but now we are left shrouded in darkness.
"I have an idea" She says suddenly, looking more nervous than she was a minute ago.
I turn to her, but she is already near the door. I can see her hands shaking as she pokes her head out. She slips out quietly, without another word, leaving me staring helplessly at where she last was.
What just happened? My whole plan rests on her showing me the tunnels. What do I do now?
She isn't going to turn me into Harley is she? Look at what he and his men did to her. She asked me to kill her to get away from them! Surely she wouldn't turn me into them.
A blaring alarm echoing through the room, causes me to jump. A bright light begins to flash in the corner of the room and my heart rate sky rockets.
Shit. Shit. Shit. I have no where to hide, no where to run. Even if she told me exactly where to find the tunnels entrance, I can hear the shouts of men from outside the door.
There footsteps echo through the door and I grab the silver knife from where it landed when I threw it. My pack and my mate is at stake. I am not going down without a fight.
The door begins to open slowly, and I get into a defensive position. I don't know if I can take Harley or even that big guy, Adam. But this knife will do some serious damage. Just when I am about to attack, Jaclyn pokes her head it.
"Thank you for not leaving me. This way." Relief floods her face as she points in the direction of where we need to go.

I don't waste a second, moving behind her. Did she really think that I would leave her here? I haven't been here long, but I think that leaving her behind would be a fate worse than death.
She opens a door at the end of the hall, locking it quickly behind me. She takes a noticeable breath before turning around to face me.
"What did you do?" The flashing light is in this room to, but I don't let it distract me from looking around.
There are books and maps scattered on every surface. Even the floor has papers scattered all over the place. It's like a tornado came through here, but there must be a method to the chaos.
I approach the desk, that has the most clutter on it. my fingers skim over different maps of packs, patrol schedules and notes all in messy handwriting.
My eyes flit over everything but stop on an old piece of paper. It's browning with age with torn edges and has been folded many times. But it's the drawing that catches my attention. A simple sketch of the locket around my neck.
"I set off the Alarm that we are under attack." Her words sound far away as I inspect the drawing. It is exact, no detail is out of place. Even the chain is precise.
I turn to ask Jaclyn about something Harley had said. His grandpa, he mentioned he described it. I almost didn't notice that she was standing in front of an open trap door.
I grab the sketch, shoving it roughly in my pocket before approaching it quickly. Immediately, I gag at the smell emanating from the tunnels. Maybe there is another way out because it makes my stomach churn and I just might be sick.
She nods for me to go first. I know I shouldn't hesitate, but it smells like I am about to jump into an overused port-o-potty. I take a deep breath of fresh air before hoping down into the, possibly literal, shit hole.
Something splashes as I land and I hold back another gag. I want to look down and see exactly what I landed in, but I decide against it. If I tell myself it is water, than that is what it is.
Even though it is dark, I can still see pretty well thanks to my wolf. As soon as Jaclyn is behind me, we walk quickly through the tunnels. The further we get, the worse the smell gets. I try to use my shirt to cover my nose, but it doesn't help.
I didn't want to ask. I wasn't going to ask, but curiosity really did kill the cat and I have to know.
"What are these tunnels used for?" I whisper but it didn't matter as the tunnels echo my words.
I see her flinch from the corner of my eyes. She lets out a heavy sigh as she watches her step very carefully. I don't want to watch my step because then I will have to look down. If I look down, I might find out that it isn't water we are walking in and I just don't want that.
"Some of the men are nicer than others. If you're alive when they're finished with you, you go back to the basement. If not, they throw you down here." Silence. My eyes are wide and I can almost feel the tears pricking at my eyes.
That's horrible! What do I even say to that? How many omegas were just discarded down here like they were nothing? Like their lives were nothing?
I should have listened to myself and not asked. When she first brought up the tunnels she looked like she was going to be sick, but I ignored it. I ignored the little red flag that went up in my mind and I am regretting it terribly now, because ignorance really is bliss.

Old Riding Author Lunatic Asylum
Just off the A19, in the dark, incomprehensible lands known as Yorkshire, there lies a town. A town where shadow-silent alleys glint with the secret hunger of knives. Where blood soaks the chipboard window shutters of forsaken terraces stretching off into the night. Where the smog-choked air rattles with the depraved laughter echoing out from clubs that can only generously be described as post-apocalyptic. Well, that’s Middlesbrough. But down the A19 a bit (an impossibly long way down, actually) there lies another town: Raughnen, in the ancient, forgotten Old Riding. It is an equal match in muggery and thuggery alike. It also has magic spells and pointy wizard hats. And now, across the miles and across all sensibilities, a pretty nasty power (a magic one) calls out for its pretty nasty counterpart (a decidedly unmagic one): a proper sound Boro lad. Nothing good can come of it. This is a collection of one novella and four connected short stories: I. A Yorkshire Summoning II. Old Riding Day Trip (the novella) III. Heaven is a Parmo IV. Death on the 66 V. Death on the 257 In total, this comprises 34 chapters totalling around 35,000 words, so try not to worry. It will be over relatively quickly. There are three more short stories with more tenuous links to the core collection: Rush, Paper Round and Scenario 79: Sausage Fingers, all of which can be found in my collection Short Records of Misadventure. Reading these may allow you to make more sense of certain parts of the story, if any sense is to be made at all. NOTE: There are instances of prejudice and discrimination within these stories, including elements of sexism and ageism, which are purely the thoughts and actions of the characters involved and which certainly do not reflect my own views on these matters. ANOTHER NOTE; A WARNING, PERHAPS: This can get a bit weird. In less than 150 pages, we have four viewpoints, first and third person narratives, and a completely disjointed plot with lots of gaps, dead ends and no real resolution. Also ZERO lunatic asylums. It's all a bit odd. If that sort of thing isn't your cup of tea, which it most likely isn't, it might be best to move on now.
