《Control [Carlisle Cullen]》0.6

After weeks of careful rebuilding, the bikes were finally ready. While Eleanor was excited that they were done, she also worried that she and Bella wouldn't have a reason to visit Jake anymore. She had grown quite close to the boy lately, along with Embry and Quil.
But Embry hadn't been showing up the garage lately, leaving Eleanor to worry after her new friend. When she asked Jacob about his disappearances, the boy told her to drop it and didn't give out another drop of information.
Now, the three of them sped down the road through La Push, Eleanor smashed between the two as she sat in the middle. Her fingers fiddled together in her lap, and she looked past Bella out the window, taking in the ocean and the cliffs.
Jacob sighed beside Eleanor. "If I told you guys, I couldn't fix these bikes, what would you say?"
Eleanor huffed a laugh, nudging her friend as she did. "Are you suddenly doubting your skills?"
"Definitely not." Jake laughed for a moment before stopping, the expression on his face shifting into something somber. "I just..."
Eleanor waited for him to continue but, when it was clear he wouldn't, Bella jumped in. "If you told us that you wouldn't have been able to fix these bikes, I'd say that's really too bad, but we're going to have to find something else to do."
Jacob's lips quirked up and El smiled briefly, before turning her attention back to the ocean. Her eyes lingered on the cliffs rising from the water, catching on a group of men. "Is that Sam Uley?"
The group consisted of four or five boys, each of them looking shirtless and dangerously close to the edge. Sam Uley pulled another boy towards the edge with the help of a friend and sent him towards the water.
Bella gasped besides Eleanor, sending the truck into park before opening her door. Eleanor and Jacob followed in suit. "Oh, my God! Did you see that?"
Jacob began to laugh beside Eleanor, causing the two brunettes to look at him. "Relax, Bella! They're not fighting, they're cliff jumping. Scary as hell, but a total rush."
"A rush?" Bella asked, her eyes flickering back towards the boys. Eleanor could almost see the wheels turning inside her friend's head and clenched her jaw. She could stop at nothing to see Edward, even if it meant putting herself in danger.

"I've never seen people jump from that high." Eleanor told Jacob. Eric and Mike had tried to convince the girls to go before, but Eleanor had never seen the appeal.
"Most of us jump from lower down." Jake replied with a shrug, his dark eyes glaring towards the group. "We'll leave the showing off to Sam and his disciples."
Bella turned again, catching sight of Jacob's glare. "Do you have some kind of beef with them?"
Jacob hesitated, and Eleanor thought that he wouldn't elaborate before he sighed again. "They just think they own the place. Embry used to call them hall monitors on steroids. Now look at him."
"That's Embry?" El whipped back to stare at the four remaining boys. She squinted her eyes, trying her best to pinpoint him. She nearly didn't recognize him with his new haircut. "What happened to him?"
"He missed some school and, all of a sudden, started following Sam around like a little puppy. Same thing with Jared and Paul." Jacob glanced towards Sam again before focusing on the girls. "Sam keeps giving me this look, like he's... waiting for me or something. Creeps me out."
Eleanor stared at him for a moment and thought about the book Bella had purchased in Port Angeles. Almost everyone local knew bits and pieces of the legends and, with everything else that El knew now, she wondered if there was a bit of truth to them. At this point, it wouldn't surprise her.
"Come on, El."
Bella and Jacob were back at the truck, waiting for Eleanor to join them. She tossed the boys another glance before climbing into the middle. Bella pulled off after a short moment and the three were on the road again.
The further they drove, the more Eleanor forgot about the Quileute legends. She thought of riding the dirt bikes and enjoying time with her friends. The drive wasn't far from their stop and soon, Jacob was unloading the truck.
After Jake propped the bikes up, he slapped his hands together and turned towards the girls. "Who wants to go first?"
"I do!" Eleanor jumped up before Bella could and rushed for the bike. Jacob chuckled beside her as he moved in front of the bike.
Eleanor nodded back, inhaling deeply as she slowly released the clutch. The bike slowly rolled forward, causing Eleanor to prop her legs up and add more speed. She drove carefully but quickly, laughing as she maneuvered the machine around the clearing.

She turned sharply around a rock, her hair flipping back in the wind before pushing the gas down to speed back to her friends. Mud flew up from the back tire when she pressed the break, the bike stopping abruptly in front of Bella and Jake. "That was so fun!"
"I'm surprised you didn't eat shit with how fast you were going sometimes." Jake teased, holding the bike steady for El when she climbed off. Eleanor only laughed in reply.
Bella took Eleanor's spot on the bike and gripped the handlebars, listening as Jacob explained where everything was again. Bella readied herself to go and released the clutch a little too quickly, causing the bike to lurch forward. Before El or Jacob could stop her, Bella spoke. "I'm okay. I want to go again."
She released the clutch again, the time letting the bike go easily and drove forward. Eleanor watched tensely, noting that her friend's head kept snapping behind her, not paying attention to where she was going.
Bella seemed to go faster and faster and Jacob began to yell. "Hit the break!"
A loud crash filled the clearing as the bike crashed into a rock, sending Bella over the front of it. Jacob rushed to grab the other bike, motioning for El to get on behind him before the two sped off towards Bella.
"Are you okay?" El asked once she was beside the girl. Bella's head was still up against the rock, her face scrunched in pain.
"I'm fine." Bella insisted, pushing against the ground to sit up. Blood rushed down her forehead and her eyes looked slightly glazed over. "I want to go again."
"Are you insane?" Eleanor asked, frowning at Bella as Jacob crouched beside them.
Jacob pushed the girl back down with a hand on her shoulder, his other under her chin. He tilted Bella's head up. "You're bleeding, Bella."
Eleanor glanced towards Jacob once while he took his shirt off before focusing back on Bella. Jake pulled Bella's hand away from her forehead, replacing it with his shirt as he dabbed at the blood.
Bella looked towards Jacob, her eyes still glazed over as a smile tugged at her lips. "You're kinda beautiful."
Jacob's hand paused on her forehead, his expression morphing into amusement. Eleanor giggled behind her palm. "How hard did you hit your head?"
Bella looked at the two of them with a confused frown and Eleanor bumped Jacob's shoulder. "Let's go. She needs to get to the hospital."
"Can I sit with you guys?"
The sound of Bella's voice had cut through Eleanor's conversation with Angela, and she turned, smiling when she saw Bella standing by their table. "Yeah."
The rest of the table had gone quiet, their once loud voices small and hushed as Bella sat beside Eleanor. Eleanor glanced towards her friends, who snapped back into their normal rhythm once Bella began to eat.
"I did see something in the woods, though." Angela said, continuing her story from before. She was convinced that she had seen the reported animal that had been killing people in the woods.
Eric laughed beside her as he poked around his lunch tray. "Yeah, I believe you babe."
"No, he doesn't, he's just trying to get lucky." Eleanor interrupted, sticking her tongue out to tease her friend, who poked his out right back.
"It was jet black and huge." Angela ignored her friends. "On all fours it was still bigger than a person."
Jess hummed. "A bear maybe?"
"Or an alien." Mike laughed and Eric joined in with him. "You're lucky you didn't get probed."
Eleanor punched his arm, rolling her eyes when the boy winced beside her. Bella looked up from her plate. "You're not the only one, Angela. My dad keeps getting reports at the station. Like five hikers have been killed by some bear. But they can't find the bear."
Eric quickly wrapped an arm around Angela. "Last time you clowns doubt my girlfriend."
Eleanor snorted. "Shut up, Eric."
"So, Bella's back!" Mike smiled, turning the conversation away from Angela and the monster in the woods. "So, now that you're talking and eating again, I was wondering if you wanted to see a movie with me."
Eleanor looked towards her twin, noting that she was scowling at Mike and Bella. Bella huffed nervously, her brown eyes looking towards Eleanor. "Actually, why don't we all go see a movie?"
"Which one?" Eleanor asked, jumping in to help her friend. Eleanor didn't see what Jess saw in Mike and apparently, neither did Bella.
"What about 'Face Punch?'" She suggested with a shrug. "An action movie, you know?"
As everyone else agreed around the table, Jess smiled, bitterly. "Yay! Movie night with Bella."

They must carve out a new home for themselves in the landscape of the now rapidly changing world. They'll need to depend on each other more than ever if they hope for their new home to have any kind of future. In case you missed it, here's book one. ATTENTION: This is soft sci-fi rather than hard sci-fi, hence why I chose that tag. For those of you unfamiliar with the distinction, here's what Wikipedia had to say. 1. It explores the "soft" sciences, and especially the social sciences (for example, anthropology, sociology, or psychology), rather than engineering or the "hard" sciences (for example, physics, astronomy, or chemistry). 2. It is not scientifically accurate or plausible; the opposite of hard science fiction. Soft science fiction of either type is often more concerned with character and speculative societies, rather than speculative science or engineering. The term first appeared in the late 1970s and is attributed to Australian literary scholar Peter Nicholls.
