《Sinbad: High King of the Seas》Chapter 40: "Household Queen Vs the Man Who Enslaved Her!"

Annalise and Masrur stop running and there stare at the destroyed village. Annalise's eyes widen in shock as Masrur stared shocked. They were frozen in shock. Annalise falls to her knees as she couldn't believe her eyes. There was literally no one here just like the old man said. Sharrkan catches up as Annalise begins sobbing. She'd expected to find this at her age, but she hoped that just maybe her parents would be alive somewhere.
"Good. I finally found you two. I'm sure you're upset right now, but... I'm certain that you'll find your people someday... so—" Sharrkan says.
"What? You followed us? This has nothing to do with you." Masrur says.
"Don't say that is has nothing to do with me." Sharrkan says, "I... Medicine from my own country was used to help slave traders. I never knew that. And Heliohapt is a country that uses slaves... Before now, I never thought to question the practice of slavery. But after hearing what the Torran chief said... I don't think any group of people should be forced into slavery! Something like that... is just one person taking away another's happiness in order to exploit them! We shouldn't allow something so tragic... It's not right! Sinbad told me about you two... Annalise's oldest memories is slavery before she found Sin and you... Masrur, were forced to fight as a gladiator. You never got to see the outside world, and you were separated from your people and your family... You were always alone... I also heard that you've actively contributed to this journey. To have it all turn out like this must be painful." Masrur looks down and Annalise's eyes widen as she looks over at him.
"Don't act like you understand. There are no longer any fanalis here. My people, my family. I just have Annalise... Other than that... I have nothing! That's something a royal... with a country and a family to return to would never understand. I don't want to be pitied by someone who can't do anything for himself!" Masrur says. Sharrkan gets angry and he grabs Masrur's shoulder.
"CUT IT OUT ALREADY! It's true that we're different people! Our bloodlines and situations are completely unalike, but don't say that you have nothing!" Sharrkan says, "I no longer have a country to return to. My family is gone. Even fore that though, I was always alone. But you were always surrounded by such amazing people... you're surrounded by people, aren't you? You have Annalise and Sinbad. Everything I didn't have... you don't call that nothing!" Sharrkan begins crying and Annalise's eyes widen as she stared at the two boys. Annalise and Masrur turn to look as they hear something.
"What?" Sharrkan asks.
"Someone's coming. It could be a survivor from the Fanalis village." Masrur says and Annalise grabs his arm before he can take off.
"We need to go back to Sinbad now." Annalise says.
"It could be another Fanalis!" Masrur says and gets free.
"Masrur!" Sharrkan calls.
"Sharrkan, let's go." Annalise says as she pulls up her hood and looks at her household vessel bracelet, "Baal, if I need you... will you lend me your power?" It chimes as if he's answering. Sharrkan and Annalise take off after Masrur.
"Hey, did we really go the right way? There's nothing here." A guy says as the three approach.
"The village Torran is out here somewhere." A guy says. Annalise stops the two and they duck. Annalise begins shaking from shock as she gets a look at the man.

"That man... It's him..." Annalise says.
"What?" Sharrkan says.
"He... he's the one who owned me." Annalise says as she shakes in fear. Her face showed full terror. Masrur gets angry as he hears Annalise's words.
"We have to hurry and tell Sinbad." Sharrkan says.
"If we go now, we'll be too late." Masrur says.
"Huh?" Sharrkan says.
"I'll crush them." Masrur says.
"No." Annalise says.
"Crush them?! What are you say—" Sharrkan says as Masrur runs.
"Masrur! No!" Annalise screams as Masrur rushes forward and attacks a guy.
"What the hell is this kid?! Be careful!" Another guy says.
"I won't forgive slave traders like you!" Masrur yells.
"He's gone full beast mode." Annalise says.
"That red hair." The head slave trader says and Annalise gasps in shock as she looks towards him.
"You said that you want to change the world?" The Torran chief asks.
"Yes, discrimination, persecution, war, I want to change the world that created such atrocities. To do so, I need your help for the sake of your village." Sinbad says.
"Ridiculous. You're only saving that to deceive us." The old man says.
"I'm telling the truth." Sinbad says.
"Stop! We've already decided to never trust an outsider again! We've been persecuted, lied to, and had everything taken from us. We have been forced to lead a hard life of oppression rather than a peaceful existence... but what could you understand?! Enough. We'll remove you by force!" The old man says.
"I do understand... no freedom, do dignity, I can never forget the days I spent living that nightmare. The fanalis from before has been a slave twice in her life. I am a former slave. And it's not just her. That fanalis boy, Masrur, was a slave too. So, I cannot forgive the inequalities of the world that led to this whole system of slavery." Sinbad says.
Masrur continues to fight and attack some of the men. Annalise was frozen still unable to move. She didn't want to be seen. She wanted Sinbad by her side and forget that she ever saw that man again.
"Come on... I'll crush all of you!" Masrur says and a clapping sound is heard. Masrur looks towards the guy.
"Well, well. What a surprise. I thought all of the fanalis has been hunted down, but there are still some left. Are you alone? Where's your family? You'd certainly fetch a good amount as a slave... Come quietly and together we can sell you for a high price." The guy says.
"I'm not a slave anymore. I'll never be called that again." Masrur says before he's hit with a drug. Sharrkan gasps.
"That poison made in Heliohapt. We coated the tips of our swords with it. I'm glad it came in handy. That poison should've been enough to take effect immediately. What a monster." Some guys says. A sparking brings their attention to Annalise who appears in front of Masrur with Sharrkan. She was standing with an angry look on her face. The rocks around her feet lifted from the electricity power from Baal.
"What's this?" The guy says before his eyes widen, "Those eyes. Well... if it isn't, Annalise."
"So... You know me. I know you as well. YOU DEMON!" Annalise yells.
"Capture her too. She's been gone for fourteen years. She belongs to me." The guy says.
"I BELONG TO NO ONE!" Annalise yells as Baal continues to spark creating a shield around them.

"Get them." The guy says and Sharrkan yells in anger before he slices a guy's blade in half.
"WHAT THE HELL?!" Another guy says.
"Annalise, stay with Masrur while he recovers." Sharrkan says.
"Right." Annalise says as she continues staring angry at the guy.
"This sword was entrusted to me by my father. It's special." Sharrkan says, "You're swords are no match for it!" He fights off the guys without even being hit at all.
'I'll protect them both with my swordsmanship!' Sharrkan's thoughts say.
"He's just a damn brat. What the hell?" The guy who used to own Annalise asks. He tells the men that Sharrkan will tire eventually and Sharrkan stops moving as he stands in front Annalise and Masrur.
"Sharrkan, that was good. Just stay back. I can finish it." Annalise says.
"But that lightning cloak won't protect you." Sharrkan says.
"It will. It's a household object." Annalise says and she looks at the guy as she holds out her arm with the bracelet on, "Yes, you might have owned me, but I took back my own destiny. I kept the name Annalise to remind myself that I'll never belong to another human being again."
"Household object?! What the hell are you?!" The guy asks.
"The one who's kept me free is Sinbad! The first dungeon capturer. I'm his household vessel. HIS QUEEN!" Annalise says as the lightening around her forms the symbols of the House of Baal before the Queen title appears in front of her.
"BAAL! I summon your full power as the King's Vessel chosen Queen!" Annalise says, "HOUSEHOLD VESSEL: BARARAQ PULSE!" A burst of lighting spreads around her before she becomes a bright pulse of lightning that strikes where she stood. She rushes forward and breaks the swords. Annalise lands across from where she was and she looks back as lightning sizzles around her.
"SHE LEFT THE CHILDREN WIDE OPEN! NOW!" The guy yells and a guy goes to attack Sharrkan and Masrur. Masrur stops the attack.
"But the poison!" The guy says.
"Poison? Oh, you mean this? I still feel numb, but it's not a problem." Masrur says.
"Maybe a little blood loss helped you cool off a bit, huh?" Sharrkan asks as Annalise appears behind the two boys.
"Maybe." Masrur says.
"Oh well thanks to you two, my strength's returned. So now..." Sharrkan says.
"Let's defeat these guys!" Annalise yells and the three continue fighting together.
"I see... that is unmistakably a scar left by a slave collar." The old man says as Sinbad shows his scar, "So that means you really..."
"Yes, our master fell from his life as the head of a trading company into a life of slavery. He's regained his freedom now, but he was once so brainwashed that he'd begun to lose his sense of self." Jafar says.
"I learned a lot during my time as a slave. How it felt to be one of many used only to serve the whims of the few. Those last days and the cruelty of that fate... knowing how it feels first-hand, I can't just turn a blind eye. That's why... I want to save those who are suffering. I want to change this world where people trample others underfoot." Sinbad says.
"And you say you want to save us too." The old man says and then talks to the Torren people.
"I wonder if you got through to them." Jafar says.
"Baal? What's wrong?" Sinbad asks as he looks down at his sword as Baal was glowing. A flash of Annalise fighting came to Sinbad's head.
"Annalise, Masrur and Sharrkan are in trouble." Sinbad says before they spot the bright light in the sky.
"What's that bright light?" Jafar asks.
"The Queen's Power...." Sinbad says, "Baal said that Annalise was capable of using it, but she shouldn't because her lack of Magoi."
"Then Annalise..." Jafar says and they gasp in shock.
[Meanwhile]
"Capture complete!" Sharrkan says as Annalise stood over the guy who was currently crying and begging for his life, "I'm quite capable when I put my mind to it."
"I was wrong... I shouldn't have called you weak, Sharrkan. You were bad with a sword. You also kinda saved me. Thanks Sharrkan." Masrur says and Sharrkan smiles.
"We saved Annalise together. But do you have any idea what would've happened if I wasn't here to help? But really! You don't listen to people and just run off on your own!" Sharrkan says, "But now I understand... there's something I've really wanted to tell you. Masrur, you know. I've noticed something a lot during our journey. You... don't grasp the fact that I'm older and should be your mentor do you?!"
"Eh?" Masrur asks.
"Since our first meeting, you've been using such informal language and addressing me rudely. And you never pay attention to what I say! And I've had enough of you poking fun at me!" Sharrkan says.
"Huh? But I was part of the trading company before you, so I should be your mentor." Masrur says.
"WHAT? That's not how it works! People are supposed to show at least some respect to their elders." Sharrkan yells shocked, "Got it? You should address me as your mentor! Mentor Sharrkan!"
"Huh? Mentor Sharrkan?" Masrur asks.
"Yes, that's it! Now you just need to work on your attitude and start speaking more politely." Sharrkan says.
"Um... I think I should probably stop my arms from bleeding soon." Masrur says.
"What are you three doing?" Sinbad asks and his eyes widen when he sees the men tied up and one afraid of Annalise, "Annalise?" Annalise turns to look at him.
"Sin, it's about time." Annalise says before she lets out a slight gasp as she falls backwards. Sharrkan and Masrur manage to catch her since Sinbad was nowhere near them.
"Keep her away from me!" the guy says.
"Who's this?" Sinbad asks.
"He's the man who used to own Annalise." Masrur says.
"Is Annalise alright?" Jafar asks.
"Sleeping." Sharrkan says.
"Man who used to own Annalise?!" Jafar asks and Sinbad transforms with Baal.
"Where are the papers that you own her?" Sinbad asks.
"M-My bag! I keep the records on me! I never believed she was dead! I came back here to see if she made it back here. I've been coming here for fourteen years." The guy says. Jafar goes through the bag.
"Sin, here it is." Jafar says and Sinbad takes the paper. On it read Annalise's name with the seal that she was owned by the man. Sinbad completely destroys the paper.
"Annalise is a free woman." Sinbad says.
"I don't want her anymore!" The guy says.
"She's a member of my household and she will be my Queen. You will forget that you ever knew a Fanalis by the name Annalise." Sinbad says.
"Yes! Yes!" The guy says.
"GOOD!" Sinbad says as he glares angrily.

2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
