《It's Not Over》Hospital Blues

"What the hell happened?" Andy's voice drew the attention of Ira, who'd been outside of the hospital room, gazing in at the family for a while now. She was in uniform, having left during a shift, hair in a ponytail and incredibly distracted. She approached quickly, her eyes on the room, growing more worried when she saw Rosie laying in a hospital bed, his mother sitting on the end and his sister standing beside it. Ira stepped in front of her, grabbing onto her by the arms to stop her and grab her attention. She kept looking through the blinds but she stayed still.

"He started coughing up blood two hours ago," he explained, though Pippi had already mentioned it on the phone. "They're running tests but it's probably a reaction to the trial drug."

"Did they say-"

"I don't know anything, else, Villa. I've been staying out here," he said, having given his mother a police escort to the hospital when he heard and then backing off so the family could receive information privately if they wished."Villa," he tried to get her attention, her eyes still on the room and flooded with concern . "Annalise," he tried her old first name, which worked, though her head turned to him before before her eyes, reluctant to look away. "He's going to be okay." She nodded, trying to believe his words but something in her knew he never would. The door clicked open and they both turned to see Pippi peering into the hall.

"What are you two doing out here? Come on," she told them before opening the door all of the way and stepping aside. Andy took a breath to compose herself before stepping in, smiling when she saw Rosie. He knew it was fake, having seen her through the blinds only moments before.

"Hey, what's going on?" She asked, looking for a more detailed response than Hornstock could provide.

"Annalise, what are you doing here?" He asked, eyeing his family members, having told them not to worry her while she was at work.

"I don't know I just felt like wandering hospital for a while, came across a familiar face, thought I'd say hi," she said, sarcastically before switching tones without a pause and demanding to know, "what the hell happened?"

After only a moment of explanation, Annalise turned her focus towards Pippi, who wasn't playing things down as much, explaining how they were running tests as a precaution but it was likely a bad side effect of the meds that they would need to get under control.

"I'm gonna be fine. You should get back to work, Rosie said at one point.

"They're fine without me," she said, brushing it off.

"You're their lieutenant."

"We have two."

"Still. You don't need to miss work over this and you shouldn't." While he'd said this to everyone there already, it was already clear that his approach with Annalise was different. He barely looked at her when he spoke and his tone was more stern than usual. "Andy, I'm fine. There's no reason for you to be here." Now Andy struggled for words, trying not to feel hurt. "Just go back to work," he added when she didn't move. "Annalise, go!" Finally, she turned and reached for the nob, letting herself out without another word. All eyes turned back to Rosie, surprised and curious. He wouldn't say anything about it. Twenty minutes later, Ira had to return to work when he caught sight of Andy in the nearby waiting room.

She sat in an uncomfortable seat, leaning forward on her arms, lost on her mind until he drew her attention.

"You're still here?" He asked, taking a seat next to her.

"It's CPR training day with the Seattle PD. Can't hurt to stick around," she said, though they both knew it wasn't the real reason she'd stayed. Then again, the last one hadn't gone as well as she'd planned.

"Look, I don't know for sure what that was about but-"

"Don't," she interrupted him, shaking her head. "It's fine."

"You don't seem fine." She ignored him, sending a clear message she didn't want to talk about it. "You know where to find me if you need anything," he said with a sigh, briefly placing a hand on her kneecap.

"Thanks," she said, truthfully before he walked away while typing a message to Rosie.

She's still here.

Rosie wasn't surprised to hear this but his thoughts were interrupted when his sister practically read his mind.

"Why did you send Villa away?" She asked the question no one else would.

"She doesn't need to miss work and neither do you."

"You asked me to leave but you pretty much kicked her out." When Rosie didn't respond, Pippi shook her head, telling him, "don't do this again."

"Do what?"

"You and Villa, you get close and then you let something divide you and I'm not watching it," she said, linking arms with her mother and setting out in search of Annalise, who was in the same spot, adjusting her watch as she waited for news.

"Go talk to him," she told Andy, who looked up confused. "Come on," she said before grabbing her arm and physically leading her to his room. Rosie watched as Annalise turned to the door, confused, and then back to Rosie.

"You sister can be very demanding," she commented, placing her hands on her hips. She looked at the bucket beside him, glad to see he hadn't coughed anything up for a while.

"You stayed."

"Of course."

"I don't want you to." Not accepting this without a real explication, she sat down in the chair beside his bed.

"Okay. We'll talk about it." He glanced away for a moment, taking a deep breath.

"I don't want you leaving your job for me-"

"Ehhh," she imitated a buzzer. "Try again."

"What are you doing?"

"I know you, I can read you, and that's bullshit. I want the truth." He went to lie again but the moment that he inhaled, Annalise tilted her head and lifted her eyebrows, a warning for him to tell the truth, so he exhaled and took a moment before trying again.

"I'm laying in a bed, wearing a gown, with wires. I don't like you seeing me when I'm sick. I want you to be here, I want you to be with me, it makes me feel better. But you walked in here from a job where you save life's to see me laying here, weak and unable to do anything. I can't help myself and I can't help you. I don't like feeling weak."

"Rosie, you're evidence catches murderers and that's your job alone, forget your countless acts of generosity. I don't see you as anything less just because you're wearing an ugly dress." He couldn't help but smile just slightly, thrown off but entertained by the touch of humor.

"Seriously, Rosie. It just proves your strength. You've won battles most of us haven't and may never face and you're still fighting. Now if you wanna call that weak, we need to talk about your standards." He thoughts back to her own battle weeks before. He held her close, let her cry, and while he knew she was fragile, he also knew she was facing something so painful, just breathing made her strong. He never saw her as weak.

"There going to be a lot of hospital stays in the future."

"I know," she told him, moving to sit on the edge of his bed.

"I don't want you leaving work every time or worrying so much."

"Hey, I left for a pretty good damn reason. Besides, you got me out of a training day."

"You're welcome?" She laughed lightly, taking his hand into hers.

"And I'm allowed to worry, you get no control over that. But that's what girlfriends do. They worry. And they worry more when they don't know what's going on. Let me be here."

"Come here," he said, softly, reaching out and pulling her in for a short sweet kiss. A form of pain relief.
