《Moments | Spideychelle Oneshots Collection》Photograph

Peter Parker joined the photography club this year because he wanted to be a part of the school paper. That and because he wanted to pursue his secret talent for photography. Which is why he loves to bring his camera anywhere and everywhere. Ned and Betty had been dating for a while, which is why Peter and Michelle had not been able to hang out with Ned lately. But they're really happy for him. They wondered when that'll happen to them.
"Hey." MJ says as she settles her tray down onto the table and sits next to Peter.
"Hey." He said, not looking at her and instead, looking at Ned and Betty laughing at something from across the cafeteria. "God, look how happy they look." He thought out loud.
"I know." She replied, taking a bite of her sandwich. "Ned, huh? Who knew. I always thought you'd be the one to be in a relationship first amongst the three of us."
"Really?"
"Yeah, with the whole Liz thing. Although I had my doubts, I honestly thought you and her would've been together."
"Well I always thought you'd be the one to be in a relationship first."
"And why do you think that? I mean, just look at me, Pete."
"Oh my god, would you just stop that already? You're amazing."
"Oh please please please stop." She said, chuckling.
"Here, let me show it to you through my eyes." He grabbed his camera and took a candid photo of her again and again, and again.
"Please stop." She tried blocking the lens, giggling. He laughed along too.
"Come on, just one more."
"Oh my god, Peter." She put her face in her hands. "Please delete all of those."
"Why?"
"Because I look ugly!" She says, looking up at him.
"Stop saying that about yourself. You're incredible."
"Okay, I'mma have to stop you there before you do any more damage."

"I'm not kidding though. You're fantastic, and I want you to know that."
"Shut up, Peter." She blushes and smacks his shoulder as she gives a chuckle. He grins.
Despite what she had said with the photos, Peter didn't follow her instructions and kept the photos. He even edited them and made everything around MJ blurry and putting a light flare in the corner, all the while adding adjustments and filters. He didn't know exactly why he had wanted to keep her pictures, but it was just a sudden impulse from his brain.
One day when Peter was out into the football field, he saw MJ reading a book from the bleachers. She looks really... pretty, he thought. He pulled his camera out and zoomed in on her. She grinned at something she read and he hit 'Capture', the sun creeping up behind the bleachers, catching a flare effect. Perfect, he thought as he previewed the photo.
The student council had noticed that their school haven't had much co-curricular activities going on as of the moment. They thought of a photo exhibit, where any student with a good eye for photography could join in and submit their best photo. They started to post flyers all around the campus' walls and announced it in the PA system a bunch of times. Peter always ignored it but MJ encouraged him.
"Oh come on," She said, showing him one of the flyers she took. "I bet you have amazing shots in that camera of yours."
"No, just no!" He said.
"Why not? You're talented, Peter. You're a great photographer! Don't let that talent of yours go to waste."
"You know everyone else's photographs would be so much better than mine, making my own submission an entire joke."
"Oh please. At least just try, for me?" She asked, putting a hand on his arm. He couldn't resist the look she was giving him.
"Okay, fine." He sighed.
"Great! I'm sure whatever you'll submit will be amazing." Little did she know, Peter would submit a photograph of her.

Peter invited Michelle, Betty, and Ned to the exhibit. As he walked through the gymnasium doors, the murmur of different students talking about the different photographs echoed through his ears. He went looking for his own submission and was taken aback when he saw it was the biggest one framed. Underneath it was a label that said,
"Michelle Jones"
By Peter Parker
He had chosen the last picture he took of her, the one where she was sitting on the bleachers, reading a book. He had looked around and skimmed through the pictures, and then it hit him. He was the only one who submitted a portrait while everyone else submitted landscapes.
"It's wonderful, Peter." said Betty standing behind him, which startled him.
"They're beautiful." said Ned.
"Thanks guys." He tells them.
Michelle was looking at all the other photos, and was flabbergasted when she saw Peter's. He softly smiles at her.
"So... what do you think?" He shyly asks.
"I-" Her cheeks turned red now. She looks around at all the people looking at Peter's picture. "I have to go." She runs away. Peter follows her.
"MJ, please-" She runs through the doors and gone she went. He didn't hesitate trying to find her. He went out the doors and checked the bathrooms, and she was right outside with her head in her knees, wrapping them in her hands.
"Mind if I sit with you for a while?" He says. She looks up and wipes her tears.
"Sure." He sits down beside her. There was a moment of silence. "Listen, I know you're mad at me and I-"
"No, actually. I'm not mad at you." She said softly.
"Oh. Then, what is it?"
"It's just... You know how insecure I am about myself. I just.. don't want people to see me and judge me."
"Hey, look at me," She lifts her head and turns to him. "You're beautiful, okay? Inside and out. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Everyone is magnificent in their own way. And you're amazing just the way you are. Which is why I wanted to put those up. For people to see it through my own eyes."
"Where'd you even get that?"
"Get what?"
"The picture!"
"You were sitting on the bleachers, and it was just a gorgeous shot that I didn't want to pass up. I'm sorry."
"I told you to delete those candids of me.." She chuckled, turning her attention towards her knees and plucked at a loose thread on her jeans.
"I couldn't."
"Why not?"
"Those were candids that I got whenever we were just casually hanging out together, which was probably the highlight of my weekdays. You rarely smile in pictures so, I figured I'd keep the ones you were smiling in--or rather, laughing in."
"Well, I gotta admit, they do look really pretty."
"It's cause the model's pretty." He said softly.
"Shut up." She chuckled, smacking his arm. He chuckled too. He pulled out his phone from his pocket and took a candid picture of Michelle. "Give me that." She said, snatching it away from his hands and putting it into selfie mode.
She rested her head on his shoulder and with a soft and tiny smile from both of their faces, MJ clicked 'Capture'. She turned to him and kissed his cheek and clicked again, leaving a surprised and flushed expression on Peter's face. MJ laughed, not turning away from Peter as he looked at her and grinned. She unknowingly clicked again. Peter leaned in and kissed her as she accidentally held down the 'Capture' button, taking multiple photos.
"Mind if you do that again, please?" asked MJ.
"My pleasure." He said as he cupped her cheek and leaned in for another kiss.

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.
