《Everything I Broke》In the Best Case, We Die Painlessly

Surprisingly, my second year in middle school was pretty calm since Lucy was in another class (warning: don't assume that we didn't fight again -she told me she wanted things to go back to normal). Still, I was tired and ready to spend my break sitting in front of my laptop, watching murder documentaries.

Mum did not like the idea at all (I swear, it hadn't to do with the murder documentaries) and told me that one of her old friends, with whom they met in my dance classes had invited her to spend our holidays with her and her family in a La Mercy. We had only been to Durban about three years ago, but according to my mother, it was different in winter. I tried to tell her that I was old enough to just stay in Cape Town, but she didn't listen. "We are leaving tomorrow, and we will stay there for a week."

"Seriously? I don't even have enough time to get ready."

"Exactly. That's why you will start packing right now while I order lunch. Do you want pizza or noodles?"

I sighed, knowing I wouldn't win that argument. "Pizza. You'd better order extra bacon." I went to my room and realised that it was too much of a mess. Damnit. I sat in my bed and called Annika. "We have to forget about going to the national park. Mum and I will go for a week in La Mercy."

"I thought you would stay home this winter. No?"

"I just learnt that we are leaving and I need your advice. What the hell do I pack?"

"Some will, first of all." She said sarcastically.

"Fuck you."

"That can-" She tried to say, but I interrupted her.

"Don't even consider making a dirty joke, I had enough of those."

"I was going to be serious actually."

"That's even worse."

So anyway, our plane was leaving around eleven o'clock, I think, and even though it wasn't that early, I was sleepy. And then my mother told me to follow her to meet her friends. "This is Samya and her wife Eshe." she told me.

"Nice to meet you, I am Naira." I said.

"We know. Other than the dance lessons, you were in the same class as our youngest last year. She has told us so much about you." I was about to ask them who was their daughter, but then I saw Lucy and Kosmar coming towards us. Shit.

When Lucy saw me, she just walked towards me, acting all happy. "Naira, you came! Come on, I have so much to tell you." I was at least confused, but I was a bit scared of Lucy as well, so I decided to play along.

"Of course. I have to buy a bottle of water, are you coming?" She seemed relieved and nodded. She headed towards a shop, and I followed her.

"What the fuck was that?" I whispered.

"I got one rule Naira. My mothers would be really disappointed if they knew we don't get along. That's why we are going to pretend that we don't want to murder each other. Got it?"

"Why would I do you a favour?" I asked her. I had a bad feeling.

"Good question. Firstly, because you are afraid of me. And secondly, because you don't want the cops to know what happened to Irene. Just be a little more careful next time, okay?"

"What happened to Irene?" I asked, trying to act innocent. I was, obviously, panicked but I tried not to show it. I am pretty sure I failed.

"No need to lie; I saw both you and your girlfriend. And it's all here, in my camera." I didn't say anything for a moment, not knowing how to react.

"How do I know I can trust you?"

"You don't. It's your only choice; unless you want to go to prison. Maybe that would be the best option? I don't know."

I remember that feeling, a mix of fear and frustration. I was screwed. On the other hand, I just had to delete those photos. I mean, how hard could it be?

Later on, I learnt that whenever you ask yourself this question, the universe decides to fuck with you.

"You know, you look cute right now, being so scared. Can I take a photo of you?"

"Fuck you." My mother yelled at us that we had to come back, so I just sighed and started making my plan.

They put all three of us a few rows in the back so we could have some "alone time" and talk. I guess Kosmar's effort to make a conversation and Lucy telling him to shut it were, in fact, talking. "What if the plane crashes?" Kosmar whispered to us when the plane finally took off.

"In the best case, we die painlessly." Kosmar's face went pale, and he didn't talk for the rest of the flight. He fell asleep one hour in and it was just me and Lucy. We were sitting way too close, and since we couldn't use our phones, we had nothing to do.

God, it was so awkward. We were just staring at each other without talking until the flight attendant came towards us and offered us muffins and carrot juice.

It was an awful match, but while eating I had an idea.

I grabbed Lucy's bag with her camera, got up, opened the emergency exit and threw it out of the plane. I nearly fell outside as well, and a lot of passengers were looking at me. "You aren't allowed to get up-" the flight attendant tried to say. "Wait, did you just threw something outside?"

"Um, no?"

"Please return to your seat." she said before leaving. I just laughed at Lucy while I returned to my seat until a guy behind us yelled at me. I couldn't stop smiling proudly as if I was smart or something.

"Why did you do that? It had my phone in there." Lucy asked me. She was angry, and I got scared a bit, but didn't show it.

"Well, you don't have my photos anymore." I said.

"I put my camera in my suitcase idiot."

"Oh."
