《Seeing Double》63

"Baby they're ready for you." Tobin says.
"Okay." I say and take her hand. "Have I ever mentioned how beautiful you are?"
"Everyday." Tobin says while blushing.
"Well that's not enough." I say then lean down and kiss my wife. "You are the most beautiful woman in the world."
"You should see my view." Tobin says and bites her lip.
"We should probably stop before we miss this press conference."
"Fine." Tobin groans.
The two of us walk down from our room and head to the media room. Tobin goes and joins the team while I stand off to the side with four ladies.
"Please welcome the new US Women's National team head coach...Astrid Heath."
When that's announced I hear some gasps then camera's start flashing as I walk onto the podium. I pose for some pictures then sit down next to Kate Markgraf along with my coaching staff.
"We will now open the floor to questions." Kate Markgraf says.
"Why did you decide on Astrid as the next Head coach?"
Mrs. Markgraf then explains why she chose me and I kinda tune out.
"Astrid you're joined on stage by some of your former teammates will they be apart of your coaching staff?"
"Yes." I say. "When they retired and I knew I was going to be hired as the head coach, they were my first calls for staff."
"What positions on your staff?"
"Ali will be my Assistant coach, Ashlyn will be the goalkeeping coach, and Carli and Becky will be coaches as well."
"Why so many?"
"For us to keep our position as the best in the world, I believe that we need each and every one of these women up here. They all have years of experience in the national team set up and they all know exactly what I want from this team."

"Is your relationship with Tobin going to affect the way you pick the team."
"Absolutely not." I say. "I am going to pick the best 11 players. If my wife is in that 11 it's because she deserves to be there."
"Is you being the head coach going to affect your relationship with Tobin?"
"No. Her and I leave soccer talk at the field and don't bring it up no matter what."
After that answer multiple hands shoot up.
"Okay as much as I love my wife and talking about her can we please talk about anything else." I say causing most of the hands to go down.
"Astrid are you excited for the new teams joining the NWSL?" Someone asks.
There are three new teams joining the league to bring the number of teams to 14. One of the new teams is the Cincinnati Cyclones, which Rose is joining. Another new team is the Colorado Blizzard who Mal and Lindsey are joining since the team is in Denver. The last new team is the Los Angeles Knights which Kelley is going to be joining along with Alex and Christen which is great for them since they get to be together and not have to live apart anymore during the season.
"I am." I say. "It'll be good to have more competition in the league and It'll be fun to watch how the new teams preform in this league."
"Do you worry about the amount of women on your coaching staff?"
"Why should I?"
"What if they get pregnant and can't preform their duties?"
"You did not just ask that." I say and look at the prick who asked that. "It's not my place to dictate when they can and can't get pregnant. If they want to get pregnant, use a surrogate, or adopt then I'm completely behind them and I will be here if they need anything."

"How will you select your team?"
"I'll select the best players possible." I say.
"Even players like Jaelene Hinkle?"
"Next question."
"You're very open about your views on playing conditions." A reporter says and I nod. "Will you be selecting venues based off your views?"
"Yes." I say.
FUCK TURF...AND BASEBALL FIELDS.
My coaching staff and I answer a few more questions then we take more pictures before we head across the hall to the team meeting room.
Once in the meeting room I, along with Ash, Ali, Becky, and Carli, stand at the front of the room.
"So." I say then everyone laughs.
"What the hell Astrid?" Christen asks while laughing.
"Surprise."
"When was this a thing?" Kelley asks. "And why didn't you tell me?"
"Well do you remember when Jill, Kate, Tobin, and I had that long conversation alone in the hospital in Japan?" I ask.
"Yeah?"
"Well this is what that conversation was about. And we signed an NDA. It was suppose to be announced after the NWSL Championship, but with everything that happened US Soccer decided to delay the announcement."
"Oh."
"So does this change anything?" Mal asks.
"What do you mean Mal?" I ask.
"Is our relationship gonna change?"
"I hope not." I say. "Outside of the pitch, team meetings, and all that jazz I am still Astrid Heath so if Lindsey's being annoying then you can definitely still come hang with me."
"I resent that." Lindsey says with a smile.
"Cool." Mal says with a smile.
"Astrid." Sam says drawing everyone's attention to the midfielder.
"Yeah Sam?"
"Are you going to call up Jaelene?"
"Unless her views change I will not. I have nothing against her as a player...well I don't really know anything about her as a player, but as all of you know this team is about inclusion and I will not have someone on the team who doesn't stand for what we stand for. And her views may also make some people uncomfortable around her and if we're gonna three peat at the World Cup and win another Olympic gold medal then we need to be a close unit." I say as Ali hands the people in the front row pieces of paper and pens.
"Everyone grab a piece of paper and a pen." Ali says as the paper and pens get passed around.
"What's this for?" Kelley asks.
"Alright so you all know I hate the co-captains thing right?" I question and everyone nods. "And you all know I don't like when coach's pick the captains."
Everyone nods again.
"On those pieces of paper please vote for a team captain, a vice-captain, and a 2nd vice-captain then place your votes in this bowl." I say and motion to the bowl. "This is anonymous and once this vote is over we will destroy them."
The team nod and everyone votes for who they want then they place their votes in the bowl. Carli, Becky, Ash, Ali, and I then tally up the votes.
"Your 2nd vice-captain is...Morgan Brian." I say with a smile then everyone claps.
"YA MOE." Emily yells.
"You're such a dork." Lindsey says.
"You're all dorks." Ash says.
"True." Emily says and shrugs.
"Anyway." I say with a smile. "Your vice-captain is...Alex Morgan...or Alex Press? I don't know what you're going by now."
"On the pitch it's still Alex Morgan, but legally and everywhere else I'm Alex Press." Alex says.
"Cool." I say.
"YEAH LEX." Kelley yells.
"Dork." Alex mumbles as everyone looks at me to announce the new captain.
"And the new captain of United States Women's National Team is...Julie Ertz."
