《Soaring High - Discontinued》Chapter 13

It started out as any other patrol. A couple of muggings here and there and then later into the night, an armed robbery. No evil villain masterminds or superhuman murderers, just the normal nighttime crime that took place in Bludhaven. Percy and Dick were actually just relaxing on their rooftop, seeing as most of the crime had been thwarted. They kept their senses sharp, but so far, nothing had come onto their radars.

She watched as Dick kept his gaze on the city, intensely focusing on the lights in the faraway buildings. Even though it was the middle of the night, and an eerie haze seemed to fill the city's streets --one that they had both gotten used to-- the lights seemed to shine as bright as ever. With his forehead creased and lips slanting downward in an almost frown, it looked as if something was plaguing his mind.

Percy leaned closer to him, slipping her hand into his larger one and rubbing it gently.

"Something bothering you?" she asked softly.

Dick tore his eyes away from the cityscape and tried for a small smile. He forced his body and face to relax, and with her touch registering in his mind, it wasn't a hard task.

"Nah, I'm fine," he brushed off, but seeing her I can see through all your lies face, he corrected himself, "I don't know. I guess I'm just on edge today, like something's about to happen, but it's probably nerves. Nothing to be worried about."

He placed a swift kiss on her temple to try to soothe her, but the feeling continued to nag her as well. As a demigod, she'd quickly learned that if you felt as if something was off, chances are, it probably was, and then a monster would attack. It was very likely that the same went for heroes and vigilantes.

"Don't dismiss it, 'Wing," she said, looking at him firmly, "Nothing good ever came out of that. Promise me you'll keep yourself safe."

Dick squeezed her hand to reassure her and spoke, "I will, I promise."

After about another twenty minutes without any alerts of crimes, Percy thought it would be a good idea to call it a night, especially with Dick's off feeling.

"Nightwing, do you think now's a good time to head home? I have to wake early tomorrow," she asked, nudging him.

The last part was a small white lie, but she knew that if she didn't give a reason, he would stay up all night guarding the city, and Percy didn't think that it was a good idea. She felt slightly guilty, but told herself that it was to protect him.

When he nodded, she gently tugged his arm away from the edge of the building and towards their respective apartments. His body was about to follow when...

Suddenly, there was an explosion so loud, Percy felt the building tremble beneath her feet, and from the fire, it looked like it took place a mile away. Everything was quiet immediately after and she swore she heard the crackle of debris breaking off from what used to stand.

Her stomach filled with a dread she had never experienced before but she squashed the feeling down because, damnnit, they had people to save and criminals to bring to justice.

Nightwing looked at her, already in a fighting stance, and she knew what she had to do. She grabbed onto his arm and vapor traveled to the site of the explosion.

When they got there, they were both extremely confused. The building seemed to have been an empty warehouse, nothing worth blowing up, but they both knew it was no accident. The sound and size of the explosion made that perfectly clear.

"This doesn't make any sense," Percy said, frustrated.

"That's not important right now," Dick said, pointing a distance away, "Look."

He was right; the fire from the explosion had spread to other buildings, which seemed to be apartments.

"There are people in there!" Percy gasped, then cocked her head to listen.

Dick knew what she was thinking and replied, "The firemen won't get here in time."

Percy knew exactly what to do. "Start getting them out of there, I'll be right behind you."

As Dick jumped off to the closest building, Percy ducked into a nearby, and intact, alley. She closed her eyes and concentrated. The clouds above her started to condense, turning a dark grey. She focused on sending every bit of water up into the clouds until they were ready to burst, and then let go. The water came pouring down in buckets, soaking everything and starting to quench the fire.

Then, she followed Nightwing's suit and started to help the tenants of those buildings escape their homes. As she started to bring them out, the ambulances pulled up in the same area. She and Dick handed them the severely burnt, or injured victims and went back for more, until everyone was safe.

Dick and Percy reconvened on top of one of the more stable buildings.

"That's it?" Percy asked, not because she didn't want it to be over, but because she hoped it was.

"It seems so," Dick replied, but he couldn't help glancing at the warehouse that was now a immense pile of concrete and metal, "But..."

"But you feel there's something more to this explosion," Percy finished for him and he nodded.

"I don't think..." he trailed off because, after glancing back at the site one more time, he saw something that made his blood run cold.

Green hair.

The figure was dressed in purple and he seemed to be playing in the debris. He was hopping from slab to slab, picking up rocks and tossing them in the air joyfully.

Percy noticed he had looked away and followed his gaze.

Suddenly, the man, as if he had felt the two pairs of eyes on him, turned around and his blood red lips broke into a chilling smile.

The Joker.

Dick growled and lunged off the building.

"Nightwing, wait!" Percy shouted, but it was no use.

The feeling in her stomach intensified and she leaped after him. If he was going after the Joker, then she was too. She caught up to him, just as he stopped a couple yards away from the man.

"Joker," Nightwing snarled, "What're you doing here?"

Dick was not in the mood for pleasantries today. He knew how dangerous the villain was and, for him to come all the way to Bludhaven, he had something planned.

"Nightwing!" Joker giggled, "Fancy seeing you here!"

The villain to hop around the debris, cackling, delightfully screaming 'Duck!" every time he landed on a different slab of concrete.

"Cut the crap. What do you want?" Percy said, glaring at him.

Joker's attention suddenly snapped to her, and his grin widened, if that was possible.

"Seabird! Ooh I've heard about you!" he said, in a sing-song voice, pointing at her, "Nightwing's little girlfriend!"

Percy narrowed her eyes and glared harder. This time, she saw a glimmer of something else in his eyes, but it wasn't fear. It was excitement. Her stomach felt as if it was going to drop out of her body.

"Okay, okay, you bats need to lighten up, laugh a little," he muttered, loud enough to be heard, "I'm here because..."

He paused for dramatic effect.

"...of him!" he finished, pointing at Dick this time.

"Me?" Dick asked, disbelievingly.

"Yes you!" Joker screamed, suddenly furious, "You good for nothing, shiny, brand-new bat!"

Percy furrowed her brows at the odd description of Dick, but before she could say anything, Joker became calm, a eerily silent calm.

He looked Nightwing right in the eye and Dick would be lying if he said he didn't shiver at the gaze, because Joker's stare seemed to penetrate the whites of his mask. Percy felt her every fiber of her body scream.

Joker's voice dropped to a whisper and, although he barely moved his mouth, what he said was loud and clear.

"Goose."

Before either of them had any time to react, Dick was suddenly launched straight up, almost 200 feet into the air.

"Nightwing!" Percy screamed in horror.

Dick had no way of grappling onto the side of a building; the warehouse had completely burned down leaving no standing walls and the nearest buildings were too far away.

Screw this, Percy thought, raising her hands up to catch Dick with the water in the air. Once she had him in a safe hold, she started to lower him down slowly.

However, with her attention solely focused on him, she let herself forget about the Joker. The villain watched as the new hero saved Nightwing and he snarled. He took the flower from his lapel and directed it at Percy. Acid shot from the middle of the flower into Percy's face.

She screamed in pain at the deadly venom and fell to the ground, using all the power she had to control it off of her face, so it didn't damage her brain. She heard a loud thud, and jerked back in horror.

She saw Joker grinning in victory and madness and couldn't control her rage. She launched herself at him, punching and kicking. He tried to fight back, but he was no match for ability. Not long after, she landed a blow that sent him flying back and he landed, bleeding in the in debris.

She was about to go after him again, when she snapped back into reality. Not even wasting time running, she vapor traveled to Dick, lying on the ground.

He looked like a nightmare, blood seeping from his head, his body bruised and battered. She cradled his head, tears streaming down her.

"Oh gods oh gods," she cried, "Please don't be dead, please please please."

She willed some water out of the air and encased his body with it. The outside wounds on his body started to close up and his head stopped bleeding, he still didn't wake up. Percy had no medical expertise and if water failed her, she didn't know what to do.

Somehow, she found herself reappearing at the Bludhaven Central Hospital, Dick's body in her arms, her face and hands wet with tears and blood. She burst inside and all the doctors, turning to see what the commotion was, gaped at the scene.

"Don't just stand there!" she yelled furiously in desperation, "Do something!"

That snapped them all back and suddenly, he was being taken from her and put on a stretcher. Doctors rushed around taking him across the hospital and Percy followed.

"What happened to him?" One doctor asked her.

"Does it matter?" she screamed, "Just save him!"

They took him into a room, but when Percy tried to enter, she found the door being shut on her.

"Let me in!" she demanded, "I need to see him!"

She continued to bang on the door, unable to see anything past it.

A nurse came around the corner.

"Ma'am," she said, "We can't let you in there-"

"Why not?" Percy shouted, "I need to see him, I need to see if he's okay-"

"MA"AM!" the nurse yelled back, and Percy, taken aback by the sudden noise, quieted, "Listen, right now, he needs immediate help, and, I'm sorry, but you need to let the professionals do their job. They can't be distracted. I know it's hard for you right now, but I need you to tell me what happened."

Percy swallowed back the bile rising in her throat and nodded.

"We, um, were fighting the Joker, and he-he fell from about 100 feet," she managed to get out, wringing her hands.

"Thank you," the nurse said, "We're going to do our best we can to bring him back to you. And don't worry about the mask; we won't take it off. He's done a lot-- you've both done a lot-- for this city."

Percy nodded again and when the nurse disappeared inside the room, her barely-hanging-in-there mask of calmness collapsed. This was all her fault. How could she have let this happen?

A jolt went through her.

Bruce.

Bruce didn't know, and neither did Damian, Tim, or even Jason.

She pulled out a phone and dialed in a number, her hands shaking uncontrollably and the tears blurring the buttons together.

She had known Dick for only a year, but he had easily become one of the most important people in her life and she would have no idea what she would do without him. She loved him so much, and she didn't know if she could survive if he-if he di-

Bruce picked up the phone, but Percy couldn't bring herself to speak.

"Percy?"

She opened her mouth, but no sound came out.

"Percy?" His voice was slightly more questioning now.

"Gods," she whispered, more to herself than anything, but Bruce heard it and she could hear him sit up a little straighter.

"What happened? Percy, what happened?"

"Nightwing--he--hospital," she managed to choke out.

"I'm coming," he said and immediately put down the phone, to change into his batsuit no doubt.

Percy slid down the wall, trembling and shaking, and put her head in her hands.

Please let him be okay, she thought miserably at the gods.

This was all her fault.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A.N. I'm sorry?

Anyways, please comment and review!

In case anyone wants explanations here goes:

A: Dick being randomly launched up in the air is not going to be a weird plot hole, it'll be explained later.

B: I know that a lot of people are going to be like, "Percy's super powerful? How did she get beaten by the Joker?" Yes, Percy's powerful, but she's not a Mary-Sue and she can't do everything. One, she was caught off-guard and 2, Dick is her main priority, so if something happens to him, that's what she's going to focus on. Also, she can control water differently at once, but controlling posion/acid is not an easy feat and its going to take a lot of concentration.

So if anyone's confused, this is what happened:

Dick was launched in the air (explained later)

Percy caught him with water and lowered him a little

Joker distracted her and shot her with acid

She had to get the acid off of her before it melted through her brain.

While controlling the acid, she lost control of the water cushion thing and Dick dropped to the ground.

Now Dick's badly hurt.

so...keep an eye out for it!

I might have another one by the end of this week.
