《Soaring High - Discontinued》Chapter 11

Percy excitedly pulled Dick towards the phone booth.

"Come on, come on!" she cried, tugging his arm while he chuckled, but didn't protest.

"Excited to meet the team?" he asked, amused.

Percy gave him a duh look. Just as she was about to step into the booth, she stopped and turned back to Dick.

"Wait!" she gasped, looking truly horrified for a minute.

"What happened?" Dick asked frantically, checking her over for injuries.

"Does my hair look okay?"

Dick almost sputtered, looking at her in disbelief and Percy broke out into laughter at the sight of him.

"Oh gods, your face!" she said, stepping in and pulling him with her.

Dick mock scowled at her.

Recognized B01 Nightwing.

Recognized B27 Seabird.

He had just enough time to pull her into a kiss before the zeta beam transported them into the Cave.

The original Young Justice team members were in the middle on sparring with some of the newer members. Wally and Bart were running around each other, more or less playing tag, while Zatanna and Artemis were fired spells and arrows at each other. Connor had his arm around M'gann while the observed the scene. Tim was talking to Cassie, a light blush on each of their cheeks. Kaldur and Barbara were conversing about battle strategy with one another while Garfield and La'gann were just hanging.

When the zeta beam announced their arrival, some of the more observant members turned their heads in confusion to look at the unknown 'Seabird."

"Percy!" Tim called out, jumping over to the heroine.

Percy laughed and greeted him, giving him a one-armed hug. Long story short, the bat family and Percy had had a few more adventures with one another and they had gotten closer. At the very least, Tim didn't think she was a sociopath anymore.

Percy and Dick had taken off their masks when they first entered the cave. A couple months ago, Batman had allowed the sharing of secret identities, so most members only wore their masks on missions.

Aqualad's eye widened as noticed who she was.

"Persephone, it's good to see you again," he greeted, ready to bow when she gave him a look.

"How many times do I have to tell you, Kaldur, it's Percy," she frowning, but her eyes were playful.

"Of course," he replied smoothly.

Percy had visited Atlantis with her dad a couple times when he held his meetings and checked in with Orin, who he had appointed King. While she was there, she was introduced to Kaldur, who she knew to be Aqualad, although he had not seen her since she became Seabird, and as a result had no idea about it.

"Who's the chick, Dick?" asked Wally, speeding over to them and putting an arm around Artemis.

The others, who had stopped what they were doing, came over and formed a sort of semi-circle around them. Zatanna looked at Percy with something a little stronger than curiosity. Barbara, who had liked Dick at first but had gotten over it when they became best friends, started to form an idea in her mind and was excited.

"Team, meet Percy. She's been a hero for a couple months and goes by the name Seabird. If you guys don't mind, she'll be joining the team part-time, but you guys can make that decision yourself," Dick explained, as Percy gave a small wave to everyone.

"'Wing already told me guys who you are so you guys don't need to go through the hassle of introducing yourselves," Percy said, not unkindly.

"Hey Cassie," she greeted and Cassie, a daughter of Zeus, offered a bright smile in return.

"How do you know Tim, Aqualad, and Cassie?" Artemis questioned.

"Well, Cassie's pretty much family, I met the bat family a couple weeks ago, and my dad and Orin are colleagues of a sort, so I've met Kaldur a few times before," Percy explained.

La'gann looked at Kaldur, confused. Kaldur quickly said something to him in Atlantean and the younger boy's eyes widened as he looked at Percy in slight awe.

"COOL! Are you Atlantean? Can you breathe underwater? Do you have gills? Are you and Kaldur together?" said Bart, excitedly bombarding her with questions.

Percy choked at the last one and tried her hardest not to laugh, especially when she saw Dick's facial expression.

"Um, no, I'm not Atlantean," she said.

Bart looked crestfallen at the thought of her not having gills but then he brightened up.

"So are you and Kaldur dating then?"

"Sorry kiddo, but no, I'm not dating Kaldur," she replied, a smile on her face.

Barbara internally giggled at Dick's face, sporting an adorable grumpy look. Someone's jealous... she thought to herself.

Do you think that he and this Percy are together?

Barbara didn't even jump at the sound of M'gann's voice in her head.

Do you always eavesdrop?

Sorry Barbara, but that thought was particularly loud. I couldn't help but accidentally hear.

It's cool. I don't know if they're together, but he sure likes her.

They would be adorable, but I hope Zatanna doesn't react too badly.

Mmm hmm.

When the two of them ended their psychic conversation, Connor was asking Percy to spar with someone so he could see how she fought.

"Wait," Artemis, said, "Do you have any powers?"

"I do, but I keep them a secret unless absolutely necessary. Only a couple people know about them, including Dick," Percy explained and Artemis nodded, respecting her privacy, "Who should I spar with?"

The team all looked at each other, hesitating, but Dick broke the silence.

"I'll do it," he offered.

"Thanks, boy wonder," she joked, jabbing him in the stomach lightly and he laughed.

Zatanna's eyes narrowed further.

"Let's see what you got, hot stuff," Wally said. Artemis glared at him, but he bent down and kissed her.

"Aw come on, Arty, you know I only have eyes for you," he said, waggling his eyebrows. Artemis seemed to look at him as if saying, much better, and Bart gagged a few feet away.

Dick, frowning at Wally's comment, glanced at Percy as they got into position. She shook her head and smiled at him, and he relaxed.

Recognized Nightwing vs Seabird.

The computer sounded the start of their battle.

They circled each other for a minute before Dick lunged. He brought his escrima sticks down, but she jumped over them and tried to use his head as a springboard to push him backward. At the last minute, he flipped away and Percy was forced to land on the ground.

They stared at each other, grinned, and ran forward again.

The entire team couldn't help but be greatly impressed. The two heroes were throwing and dodging blows that they could barely keep up with. The amount of skill and fluidity with which they moved was awe inspiring. Percy fought with moves that they had never seen before, even Cassie, who preferred brute strength attacks and Dick slinked around with his acrobatics, flipping and flying every few moments.

Suddenly, Dick had Percy pinned to the ground underneath him. Even he was surprised, as she usually beat him in their fights. She stared at him, face slightly flushed and breathing a little heavier than usual. He got lost into her beautiful green eyes boring into his and her lips curled into a small smirk.

Then she shifted imperceptively, a movement that Dick noticed much too late. He groaned in defeat even before she flipped him over and pinned him down in an inescapable grip using her arms and legs. Her hair fell over her shoulders and tickled his face gently before the feeling disappeared.

Nightwing, Fail.

She grinned and stood up, offering a hand and Dick couldn't help but be reminded of the first time she had done that and he had pulled her into a searing kiss. He took the hand and got up, ignoring his first instinct.

They both turned to face the team, who were pretty much all sporting open mouths and wide eyes.

"That. Was.-" "Awesome!" Bart started and Garfield finished.

"Well, you can never have enough ninjas on the team," Artemis joked.

Barbara, having noticed the scene between Percy and Dick, cackled like a gleeful Joker inside her head and M'gann looked at her in concern.

Connor looked grudgingly impressed and Tim was just full out grinning. Kaldur and Cassie had a knowing smile on their faces, while La'gann looked like he wanted to go and ask for her autograph or something. Wally was gaping at Percy, and Artemis had to close his jaw for him. Zatanna was now scowling slightly, but she also looked impressed.

Percy had a mischievous smile on her face and Dick suddenly worried for his safety.

"Why'd you loosen your grip, Dick? I mean, you had me pinned down, right?" she asked, mocking innocence.

Dick didn't have a response that was appropriate to say in front of his team members.

Percy leaned in close to his face and then turned towards his ear. Dick could feel her hot breath on his neck.

"Why'd you let yourself get distracted, Dick?" she whispered, before pulling back with a satisfied look when she saw a small blush creep up his face.

Connor, who had super-hearing, turned slightly red at the insinuation.

Babara's inner squeals got louder and M'gann mentally told her to shut up.

"Is there something going on her that we're missing?" she asked suggestively, looking between the pair.

The said couple looked at each other, and Dick shrugged. He took Percy's hand in his own, squeezed it and held it up for everyone to see.

"We're together," Percy said, nonchalantly, while gauging the rest of the team's reactions.

Most of them looked slightly surprised or just happy.

But Barbara screamed.

"I SHIP IT!"

Then she walked away muttering random words like OTP.

Wally stared in disbelief at her.

"Man that girl is crazy," he muttered, then turned to Dick, "But anyways, congrats dude! Finally manning up, Richard?"

Dick threw out a half-hearted shut up, before glancing at Zatanna and wincing. She looked like a mixture between angry and disappointed. Before they had briefly dated, they were friends and he felt kind of guilty for hurting her, but he knew that he never felt the same way about her as he did about Percy.

The younger team member had pretty much dispersed to do their own thing, leaving the three couples, Zatanna and Kaldur alone.

"Well maybe now that Percy's here, she'll dislodge that stick up his ass," Artemis snorted, but they knew she meant well.

"I don't know," Percy said seriously, "It's stuck pretty far up."

Artemis, Wally, and Percy laughed while Dick playfully scowled. M'gann scrunched her nose up at the slightly foul language but smiled nevertheless, along with Kaldur and Connor.

"I'm happy for you, my friend," Kaldur said, placing a hand on his shoulder before turning away to talk to La'gann.

"I've got an amazing date planned out for Arty here, so we'll see you two lovebirds later," Wally said, picking Artemis up bridal style and speeding her out of there.

Percy snickered and when Dick looked at her she said, "Lovebirds. Get it?"

Dick groaned and shook his head.

M'gann and Connor went to go do their own thing, leaving Dick and Percy alone with Zatanna.

"Zee," Dick tried. Her face was downcast as she simply walked away, but he could see the anger in her steps.

Dick sighed and Percy faced him and cupped both sides of his jaw with her hands.

"What's wrong 'Wing? What happened with Zatanna?"

She moved her hands down to the base of his neck so he could talk. He hesitated for a minute before spilling.

"Zee and I used to date, back when I was Robin. I had a big crush on her and we were together for a couple months or so, but it ended because she thought I was too focused with Batman to be with her. It didn't really help that it was around the time that Bruce and I started to fight. And I don't feel anything for her anymore but we were good friends once and I don't want to lose her."

Percy ran her fingers through his hair to calm him down.

"You won't lose her, Dick, just give her some time. It's obvious that she still feels for you and it can be really hard to get over your first love. Don't worry, she'll realize soon that, especially for people like us, life's too short to hold grudges. Zee will come back, okay?"

Dick closed his eyes for a minute, just concentrating on Percy's touch.

"I really hope so," he said, as she moved her hands further down to wrap around his torso and pull him into a hug.

During the next 2 weeks, Percy easily fell in sync with the rest of the team. They had come to accept her as one of their members and friends. The only one who hadn't really talked to her was Zatanna.

She could tell that Zatanna wasn't a bad person. In fact, she was amazing, someone that Percy could see herself being great friends with. Spunky and teasing with a good sense of humor. If she was going to be completely honest, she was a little bit like herself. They both had a pretty big rebellious streak and a lot of compassion and love towards their family and friends.

If only they could get past the boy drama.

Percy sighed at the thought, turning a corner and running straight into the girl in question. Zatanna groaned and looked up to see who it was. At the sight of Percy, she scowled involuntarily. Unfortunately, she couldn't bring herself to hate the girl; she wasn't at fault and actually, neither was Dick, but she couldn't help but feel a little bitter.

And the fact that they both actually seemed really in love made her heart ache. Before she had met Dick, she lived with her father, who she loved to the end of the world. When her father became trapped inside the Helmet of Fate, Dick provided her a shoulder to cry on. Now she didn't even have him anymore and thought hurt like hell.

But she didn't let it show. She tried to a polite smile, although it probably came out as more of a grimace, and stepped around Percy. She was so close to getting away when Percy called out her name.

She turned, curious, dreading what the other girl was going to say.

"Can we...talk?" Percy asked and then winced, "I know it's a cliche line, but I noticed you were" - She struggled for the right word, - "hurting and I wanted-"

Zatanna cut her off with a sigh and nodded. She took her to her room and closed the door, thankful that the walls were soundproof to keep out eavesdropping Kryptonians.

"Listen, Dick told me the story, and for what it's worth, I'm really sorry," Percy started.

Zatanna waved her off with a tired hand. "It's not your fault, either of you, really. I know that now."

When Percy looked at her to elaborate, Zatanna sighed again, hoping that Percy didn't do anything with the information.

"Before, all of this, I lived with my dad, Zatara. Some time after I met the team, he put on the Helmet of Fate to save us but the Dr. Fate trapped him in there, needing someone to put his powers to good use. While I was grieving, Dick kind of just crept up on me and he knew how to cheer me up. We were happy for a while but started drifting apart once he became Nightwing. He was always so focused on his work, I felt like I didn't know him anymore. After we broke up, and he moved on, I realized I had lost another person. I don't have anything against you guys, honest."

Percy immediately shook her head.

"But you didn't lose him, not really!"

Zatanna was confused. What did she mean by that?

"Yes, Dick and you broke up and you're not romantically involved anymore, but he still cares about you. You're still someone he would do anything, even die for, like everybody else on this team. One thing you might have noticed is that his heart is practically the size of an ocean. Once you're in it, it's very hard to get yourself out. He'll always be there for you, just not in the way he was before."

Zatanna was now close to tears. She pulled Percy into a hug, which was immediately reciprocated.

"Thank you so much," she whispered and Percy smiled back.

"So can I consider us friends now?" she asked and Zatanna laughed, breaking the moment of emotion.

"Yes, yes you can. And if anyone should be sorry, it's me, for being kind of a jerk," she admitted.

Percy waved off the apology, saying it was fine. Suddenly she put her first in the air, startling Zatanna.

"Yes! I've officially won over the entire team!" she cheered.

"What're you going to do now? Kill us in our sleep while we still trust you?" Zatanna joked.

Percy groaned, "Well now I can't!'

The two girls laughed together and sat in a comfortable silence for a while before Zatanna broke it.

"You're a lucky girl," she said, nudging Percy, "You get to have Dick Grayson all to yourself."

Percy's eyes adopted a faraway look Zatanna was extremely surprised when a small part of her wanted to squeal.

"Yeah," she said, "But he's still a thick-headed idiot."

Zatanna snorted at the description before saying, "An idiot, yes, but an impossibly good looking idiot with a fine a-"

She was cut off by Percy whacking her in the face with one of the pillows on her bed.

"Hey!" she exclaimed and Percy playfully glared at her.

"But you're not wrong," Percy started, "He does have a dam nice a-"

Zatanna promptly smacked her in the face with another pillow.

When Dick got out of the cave showers, he nearly tripped over his own feet in shock. There, standing not even a few feet away were Percy and Zatanna laughing and talking and having a good time. He didn't know whether to be glad or run and hide for his life. But before he could do the latter, Percy called him up to them.

He hesitantly and carefully crept his way to them, just in case in case they decided the attack him or something.

"When did this happen?" he gestured to the friendship.

"Couple of hours ago," Zatanna replied amiably, "By the way, I'm sorry for being a bitch before. Our relationship had nothing to do with you and Percy and I'm glad we're still friends."

Dick's eyes widened. When Percy said she was sure Zee would come around, he didn't think it would be this soon. Speaking of Percy, he sneaked a glance at her to see her slightly smirking face.

So she had done this.

"Thank gods," he said, pulling Zatanna into a hug, which she returned happily. He looked over her shoulder and mouthed I love you to Percy who gave him a smile in return.

They broke away, just in time to see Barbara bounding up to them.

"I got it!" she sang holding up a thick book.

"No way," Zatanna snickered, snatching the book.

"Give it here, Zee," Percy said, her arms outstretched. The two other girls crowded around Percy and started flipping through the pages.

"What is that?" Dick asked suspiciously.

The trio of girls looked up at him, smirked, and looked back down simultaneously and Dick shuddered. Creepy.

"It was a gift," Barbara hinted.

"From a little birdie," Percy expanded.
