《Soaring High - Discontinued》Chapter 4

Sunlight streamed through the window and hit Dick's face as he blearily blinked underneath his mask. He woke to find himself on an unknown couch in a room he didn't recognize. He froze before relaxing when he remembered what had transpired the day before. A slightly giddy smile came upon his face but instantly disappeared when he heard a crash in the kitchen. He slowly and warily got up, his body feeling much better than last night. He crept to the source of the noise, ready to attack if necessary.

When he got there, he sighed in relief and dropped his hands.

Seabird was standing there, shooing away a cat which seemed to have knocked a glass to the ground. She was wearing short shorts and a t-shirt as pajamas and her mask covered her face. Her hair was a wavy mess, bits falling down over her mask. Nightwing gulped at the image.

The sound caused Seabird to turn sharply towards him. Her face broke out into a smile.

"Hey, feeling better?" she asked, handing him a mug filled with coffee.

"Yeah, thanks," he accepted gratefully.

She bent down to clean up the broken glass and he set his cup down to help her.

"Oh no, mister." She placed a hand on his chest, pushed him back up, and handed him the coffee again. "This is my apartment, and you are still kinda sorta injured."

Nightwing managed a smile as he watched her sweep up the debris and drop it into the garbage. She picked up her own mug and took a sip of coffee before setting it down again and checking the time.

She rushed into the another room and, in a minute, was out wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and a lab coat over it. Her mask was still in place.

"Listen, you can stay as long as you want, but I have to get to work." She took her mug with her and waved cheerily at him before exiting.

"Me too," he muttered, slightly dejected. He set the mug down with a sigh and took one last look around the apartment. He grappled back to his own apartment so he could change into his own policeman attire.

Percy could not keep the smile off her face as she got into her car and took off her mask. For the first time since the giant war ended, other than becoming Seabird, she felt happy. She watched from her place in the car as Nightwing exited her apartment from the window and snuck away. She couldn't help but think about when she was running her fingers over his chest, over his scars and she blushed. A couple minutes later she realized she was still sitting in the car and hadn't even turned it on yet.

I've really got to get to work, she thought, shaking her head.

By the time the night rolled around, Dick was feeling much better. The pain had dulled, in his opinion at least, and he only felt it if he did a ridiculous amount of moving around. So obviously, he suited up as Nightwing and got back out there. He found Seabird on their rooftop. It almost looked like she was waiting for him.

"Hey 'Wing, how do you feel?" she asked lightly, but he could hear the genuine concern in her voice and it made his heart twist.

"I'm," he said, then paused and started over, "Listen, I didn't really get the chance to properly thank you for helping me yesterday. So...thank you, for saving my life and letting me stay at your place."

She walked over to him and put her hand on his shoulder. "No need to thank me, I wanted to. I'd do it again too, in a heartbeat."

Nightwing's mouth went dry. He could tell she meant every word and was taken aback. He always had a witty remark or a smart reply, but now he was speechless.

"I-" he hesitated and licked his lips, "I would too." His voice was wobbly but true.

He was blinded by the sheer size of the smile he got in return. Seabird leaned over and pecked his cheek. Nightwing froze.

"I'm glad to hear it," she replied.

He had to stop himself from lifting a hand to touch the spot her lips had been. He mentally shook himself out of it.

Come on Grayson, I thought girls were your forte, he told himself.

"Listen," he said, "I know I said I didn't really want to work with someone, but if you want to open up the offer again?"

Last night made him see his situation more clearly. He missed having someone watch his back like that. He missed having someone he could count on and someone who could count on him. He wasn't Batman. He couldn't really do the solo thing. I mean, sure, Batman always had a Robin, but it wasn't because he needed one. It was because Bruce couldn't help himself from taking in strays. But he was not Batman. And he liked working with someone.

"It's always been open," Seabird said, holding out a hand, "Partners?"

He reached out and shook it, smiling.

"Partners."

Blockbuster sat in a chair behind a desk. He stared at a photo of a masked girl on a rooftop. She was standing next to that vigilante, Nightwing. He crumpled the picture in a quiet rage, glaring at nothing in particular.

I told you I would take everything from you, Nightwing. Now I found someone worth something to you and you won't be able to stop me.

A small man warily stepped into the room.

"Um, Mr. Blockbuster sir?" he squeaked.

"What!" he thundered, slamming his fist into the table, splintering the wood.

The man practically squealed in fright and then found the courage to speak up.

"They're here, sir," he got out.

Blockbuster smiled a sinister smile. He smoothed out his suit as he got up.

"Well then let's go meet the cavalry, now shall we?" he strode to the door then looked back, "And order me a new desk will you?"

He walked through the hallway and threw open the doors at the end to greet the guests.

AN. Good? Bad? Please let me know.

PS, I know it's a little shorter than usual, but I promise not all of them will be.
