《Chasing Prom Queen》Bonus chapter 1

"What? How the ...?" Tanya says in outrage on my behalf.

We'd all been looking forward to this weekend away. A ski trip with the school. Only this moment here was what I'd been dreading. The inevitable pairing up of roommates. A constant problem when your friendship group is three people. I'd told my two friends Tanya and Laurie to ask to be paired up and I would take the third wheel spot, waiting for the teachers to assign my fate.

"It'll be fine Tanya, don't worry." I say trying to calm her down, it really isn't a problem.

"Holly, did you not hear who they assigned as your roommate? It's Kyla Watson, height of the popular posh make-up brigade." She talks to me like I'm a small child.

"Seriously Tan, I'll survive. Kyla is the nice one of the group."

"You may as well quit Tan, you know Holly doesn't believe in high school social standings." Laurie says with a roll her eyes.

"It's not that I don't believe." I say, gearing up for the same old argument. "I just don't see why people give it so much power. I've got my friends, you've got your friends, why does one need to be treated better than the other?"

"And on that note, it is time to go to our rooms." Laurie says with an exacerbated smile.

We part ways when we reach the right floor agreeing to meet up in an hour to go for lunch. With them heading down the corridor I open the door to my room for the next two nights.

"Look Kyla, it's your English roommate." Kyla's friend Sandy/Brandy/Mandy (not really sure what her name is.) says, sitting at the obligatory desk. Bet it's the only time she's sat at a desk outside school. Probably thinks it's a make-up table. Kyla looks up briefly from putting her clothes away in the closet.

"I'm Welsh actually." I say for what feels like the millionth time since my family moved to America when I was ten.

"I can't believe they stuck you with her. Ask to be swapped." She continues as if I'm not in the room.

Seeing Kyla's suitcase open on the one bed I decide to claim the other. Jumping into a splayed starfish across the bed. "Don't mind if I claim this bed, do you?" I ask, raising my head slightly and sending a little grin toward Kyla. She shakes her head, trying to hide a smile.

"Seriously. You just come barging in, and jump on a bed. We're you raised by dogs?"

"Karen and Joel Daniels actually. They choose to raise me with love instead of gifts. You should try it; it actually makes you a nicer person."

She looks at me like I'm dirt, it's does nothing but make me want to laugh.

"In other word's you're poor." Actually, my parents have decent jobs and we live quite comfortably. "What are these teachers making us put up with?"

"You know this isn't your room. If you go to your own room you won't have to put up with me." I say in a sing-song.

"I'm supporting my friend."

"It's fine, Gabby." Whoops, not even close to my guess. "Why don't you go unpack and we'll get something to eat later." Kyla finally says.

After a little more convincing Gabby leaves. Closing the door behind her Kyla comes back into sight with a sigh. "You couldn't play nice?"

"She started on me." I say with a high voice, moving to kneel on the bed. "Besides, it got rid of her didn't it. Now, why are you all the way over there gorgeous?"

Kyla chuckles and moves into my waiting arms. "It worked Cariad, we have a room to ourselves for the weekend." I whisper before the two of us move into kiss. The two of us collapsing back onto the bed in a tangle of limbs.

"How much do you think our friends are going to complain about us being roommates?" Kyla asks.

"Loads but I'm right where I want to be. On a bed with my girlfriend. Oh, and I have nearly an hour to spare." I wink.

Kyla smiles wide and bright, turning my limps to jelly. "Whatever will we do to pass the time?" she whispers huskily in my ear. Bloody hell, rooming together was the best decision ever.

So, it seems I may have been a little hasty in thinking this was going to be a great weekend. Kyla and I had been secretly dating for over a year. It's so secret that the only people that know we even know each other are my parents. They don't know I'm a lesbian but they know we're friends. We love each other but neither of us is ready to come out. Our friends' reaction to us sharing a room is enough to hold us back from telling them we're friends.

We thought this could be a gateway to us being friendly while in school only the universe has decided that we will not be having the nice weekend we planned.

After a delicious hour in bed with my girlfriend that resulted in me being late to meet my friends. I thought I'd spend some time with my friends then head back to bed with Kyla. Only Kyla's time of the month showed itself. She spent the night in bed with cramps. I tried to help, getting a heating pad and chocolate for her. Before cuddling her in, just watching a movie in bed. Not what I planned but nice in its own way.

The next day I'm strolling around with Laurie and Tanya. We'd been skiing in the morning and had stopped for lunch. Not in any rush to be or get anywhere. My mind had sort of wandered to the night before, and how my teenage libido needs to take a back seat. Maybe if I hadn't been so distracted, I may have seen the black ice. Then again, it's me, I was bound to find the slipperiest spot. Going down with a thud it quickly became apparent my ankle was in a lot of pain.

Laurie and Tanya did well and held off from laughing at me until they helped me to the first aid room. Then the jokes came out about my clumsy ways.

Ms Scott's was called and helped get me back to my room. Some lovely pain killers now in my system as well as my sprained ankle firmly wrapped up. They work together to get me in bed with my foot propped up. The girls offer to stay and look after me but I shoo them away. I don't want to ruin their weekend.

"I'm just going to get some sleep. I'll be very boring. I know I'm the glue that keeps us going but you two are just going to have to make do without me."

They both laugh but start to make their way to the door. "Come on Tan, I think someone will be alright."

"Message us later if you want anything to eat. We'll bring you something." Tanya says.

"Thanks, go have some fun." I say, watching the girls get closer to the door. "Oh, girls, watch out for black ice." With that they crack up laughing, the door closing cuts out the joyous sound.

"How are you really feeling?" Ms Scott asks.

"The pain killers have helped a lot. It's more of a niggle than a stabbing pain now." I say trying to wriggle my toes.

"Okay then, well I better go phone your parents. Let them know what happened."

"Mum will probably say she was waiting for your call. I'm a little clumsy." I say repositioning on the bed.

As Ms Scott smiles indulgently, Kyla comes powering into the room.

"What happened? Are you okay? I saw you limp past in the foyer."

"So, it turns out that a ski resort is slippery. You really need to watch where you step."

Kyla stops and affectionately sighs. "Only you."

"I take it you are in welcomed company now." Ms Scott says, making her presence known. Kyla freezes slightly. "I'll leave you guys alone now."

"Thanks Ms Scott."

She starts to leave before turning back as if remembering something. "You two are okay with being roommates, right?"

"Yeah."

"It's just I've been approached by both your friend groups asking if there is any way to move you both. I seem to remember the two of you purposely asking to be put together though."

Kyla and I look to the other, a slight panic forming. "Um, we work together and became friends. Only we haven't told our friends that. Sorry that they've been bugging you but we are happy to share a room together."

"Yeah, we told them that we were fine. They just don't understand how we can be friends." I add.

"Okay then. I'll keep telling them that you can't be moved. Miss Watson, this your bed?" Ms Scott asks pointing to the spare bed.

"Um, yes?" She says nervously. In actuality Kyla and I both slept in the bed I'm currently propped up in last night but our teacher doesn't need to know that.

"My wife would love to known how you made the bed. It's almost like it's not been slept in." Ms Scott says with a twinkle in her eye. "I'm going to call your parents Miss Daniels and remember girls; my door is always open if you need to talk."

"Thanks Ms Scott." I say again.

"Yeah, thanks." Kyla adds.

With the door closed behind Ms Scott the two of us hover in silence.

Then Kyla finds her voice. "Did she just ...? Have we been ...? Is she ...?"

"Cariad," I say finally, getting her to stop her rambling. "Come cwtch." I say holding my arms open.

"I don't want to jostle your foot." She says nervously.

"Don't worry about that. I need you."

Tentatively she climbs onto the bed from the other side and slides up next to me. Tucking herself into my arms while also keeping her feet far away from mine.

We enjoy this peace for about ten minutes before my phone rings.

"What are you?" my mother's voice says down the line.

"Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm a plonker."

"Your teacher said you were in good spirits. Is there anyone there with you?"

"I sent Laurie and Tanya away so they could enjoy their weekend." As I'm talking Kyla holds her hand out for the phone. "Hang on mum, Kyla wants to talk to you."

"Hi Karen." Kyla says brightly to my mum when I give her the phone. "Yeah, I've got her. We're roommates so she can't send me away." Kyla laughs. "Exactly, she can try but it won't work. She's currently sitting in bed with her foot propped up and that is where she will be staying for the rest of the night. Yeah, I'll make sure she eats. She's trying to hide how much pain she's in. Probably won't be long before she's asleep." Kyla says noticing my yawn. "Okay, I'll see you when we get back."

With that she passes the phone back to me.

"Oh, so you can talk to me now."

"Oh hush, you listen to Kyla and let her take care of you, okay. Don't try to walk on that ankle without the crutches they gave you."

"Okay, okay. I promise."

"Good. Try to enjoy yourself. Now get some rest. Love you."

"I will, love you too. Bye mum." After putting my phone back on the night-stand we both fall back into each other's arms. "So, mum said I need to do as you say."

"Karen is a wise woman."

"Thought you might think so." I chuckle, before stifling another yawn.

"Get some sleep. I'm not going anywhere for the rest of the night."

"I love you."

"I love you too."
