《Sweetest Escape.》CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

It's Christmas morning and I am cuddled up with my husband who is fast asleep. His hand is resting on my stomach, something he has been doing ever since we found out I'm pregnant and I can't complain because I like it. The last couple of months have been interesting to say the least, as I have watched my body change. Sometimes I just stand in front of the mirror looking at my belly that isn't that big as yet and I'm in awe that there is life growing inside it.
As much as it has been rewarding to experience something like this, it has been hard too. I went from not having any kinds of symptoms to having sensitivity to all types of smells, nausea, cravings that have made my husband drive across the city in the middle of the night so he could get me what I wanted and me being extremely hormonal. If I was Kofi I would have left me but he has been very gentle and understanding.
We also found out that we're having a girl and I think Kofi is more excited than I am. All he talks about is protecting his little girl, spoiling her, going on dates with her and it warms my heart to hear him talk like that. I just know he is going to be a great dad and our daughter is going to be lucky to have him as her dad.
My moment of silence is suddenly disrupted by a noise coming from downstairs. I carefully get out of bed so I don't wake Kofi up, I change into a sweater and leggings before I head down the stairs. I follow the noise which leads me to the kitchen and I'm not surprised when I find my mother there.
"Good morning ma. Merry Christmas!"
"Good morning baby. Merry Christmas!"
"Why are you up so early?"
"I couldn't sleep any longer so I decided to get up and make some cinnamon rolls"
"That sounds nice. Do you need any help?"
"No, I already put the cinnamon rolls in the oven"
"Alright. How did you sleep?"
"I slept okay even though your dad was snoring like a bear"
"Sorry about that?"
"How have you been doing? Last night we didn't get to talk much because I was tired from traveling"
"I'm fine ma"
"That doesn't sound too convincing. What's going on?"
"I just feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities I have ma. Since we got married, I haven't been able to get that balance between my business and being a wife"
"That's how life is at times, you won't always have that balance that you need. Lucky for you, you have someone to help you pick up the slack when you can't"
"I hear you ma but I just don't want him to feel like I'm not putting any effort"
"You should tell him how you feel instead of acting like you have it all together when you don't"
"I will"
"So when am I going to get a grandkid?" She asks and my dad picks the right time to walk into the kitchen
"Good morning dad. Merry Christmas!"
"This conversation isn't over" ma says as I stand up to hug dad
"Merry Christmas. It smells good in here"
"Ma is making cinnamon rolls" I tell him
"Oh nice. Is Kofi still sleeping?"
"Yeah, he stayed up late handling a few things"
"Oh, ok. How did you sleep?" He asks

"I slept great"
"That makes one of us" ma snickers
"What's up with her?"
"Your snoring disturbed her"
"I don't snore"
"Yes you do"
"Okay maybe I do but it must have been caused by me being tired from traveling yesterday. I'm sorry my love" he says as he hugs her and as she tries to push him away.
"Steven get off me"
"You don't want my love?"
"I didn't say that, I'm just busy right now" she tells him and I can't help but chuckle at the way they interact with each other. If this is what Kofi and I will be like in thirty years, I'll gladly take it because this is too cute.
I let my parents have their little cute moment as I start making breakfast. Less than twenty minutes later, the eggs, the bacon, the sausage, the cinnamon rolls made by ma are done and we all take our seats at the dining room table.
"What's the plan for today?" Dad asks
"We're just having late lunch with Chi, Calvin, baby Alaïa, Kofi's dad and his new girlfriend"
"That sounds nice, I'm looking forward to seeing Gerald because I haven't seen him since the wedding"
"He said the same thing when I told him that you were going to be here" Kofi tells dad
We spend the rest of the morning lounging around before I start cooking with ma. Ma is hands down the best cook and I had missed her cooking so I let her handle the meat which is chicken, beef, lamb and I handle the starch. I gave my cousin the responsibility of making the dessert so we are covered on that. Three hours later, the food is done and all that is left is for us to clean up.
I toss the apron on the kitchen counter and heading up the stairs feels like a chore because of how tired I am. I open the door to our bedroom and find Kofi resting on the bed with his phone in his hand
"The boys said merry Christmas"
"Tell them I said merry Christmas"
"Are you done cooking?" He asks
"Yeah but my feet hurt"
"Come here" he pats the spot next to him
I climb onto the king sized bed and he pulls my legs up before he starts massaging them. He applies pressure to the spot that hurts the most and I feel some relief
"That feels so good baby"
"You shouldn't be on your feet for long babe"
"I know but there is no way I was going to let mom do everything while I was sitting"
"I hear you but I want you to remember to take it easy"
"Okay babe. Ma asked me when we're going to give her a grandkid earlier and I wanted to tell her she'll be getting one in five months but I didn't want to ruin the plan"
"Your dad asked me the same question, I guess they really want another grandchild"
"Yeah. I wonder how they are going to react to the news"
"They're all going to be happy and I know our princess is going to be spoilt because of the way they are with baby Alaïa"
"Yeah"
"We should probably start getting ready now"
"I was really enjoying your foot rub"
"I'll give you another one later on"
"Okay"
We step into the bathroom where I strip and put the dirty clothes in the laundry bag before wrapping my braids up. I take a quick shower and I rub some shea butter on my stomach once I have dried off because many believe that it helps fade stretch marks.

Since I don't want anyone to see my bump just yet, I change into a white, chiffon dress that flairs out from the waist. I tie half my braids up and do the baby hairs before applying clear lipgloss. 'You look fine as fuck babe' Kofi whispers as he hugs me from behind.
"Thank you. Lets head downstairs before you get carried away" I tell him and he chuckles
I can hear Chi and moms voices before I even get to the bottom of the stairs so I follow the voices and they lead me to the kitchen. As soon as I step into the kitchen and baby Alaïa sees me, she gives me a toothless smile and gets fidgety in her moms arms
"Hi baby, you look so pretty like your mama" I say as I take her from Chi
"Hey Chi"
"Hi sis. You look very radiant today"
"You always say that" I tell her
"I know but I can't be the only one who has noticed a change in her" she says and ma nods her head
Just as ma is about to say something, I am saved from this conversation by Kofi walking in with his dad and his girlfriend. They walk in joking around and that makes me happy because Kofi didn't have this when he was growing up so for them to be interacting like this, it's beautiful.
"Hello everyone. Merry Christmas!"
"Hey Mr A. Merry Christmas to you"
"How's everyone doing?"
"We're good. You look amazing and you seem to be in high spirits" ma tells him
"Thank you and the truth is this woman by my side is responsible for me feeling the way I do right now"
"I'm happy that you found someone who makes you feel that way" ma adds
"Thank you. Let me introduce y'all to my lady Ms Angeline. Angeline that is Kofi's wife Thembi, her mother Mrs Abel-Obi and her sister Chi"
"It's nice to meet you all. Thank you for inviting me into your beautiful home"
"Thank you and it's a pleasure to meet the woman that this old man talks about non stop" I tell her
"Well he talks about y'all too and it's nice to finally put faces to the names"
"Would you like something to drink?" I ask
"Yes please"
I pour them some white wine and he leaves us with Ms Angeline so we can get to know her. We learn that she teaches grade seven students, that she has a thirty year old daughter who recently had a baby and she even tells us the cute story about how she and Kofi's dad met. She seems like a sweet lady and I already like her.
We leave her in the kitchen with ma as Chi helps me set the table up. Once we have everything on the table, we call everyone to the dining room. We take our seats and join hands as dad says grace
Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for the amazing food that is before us. I ask that you bless the hands that made this food and that this food nourish us. We thank you for bringing us together as a family and we pray for a good time. In Your name I pray,
'Amen' we all say before we start passing the serving dishes around the table. Watching everyone interact with each other in the manner that they are warms my heart because we haven't sat together like this in long time. The laughs, the smiles are all genuine and this right here is more than anything I could ask for. Kofi helps me clear the plates once we are done, as we get ready to share the news.
The plan is for me to give them slices of the fudge cake brought by Chi on the plates that have the message about our baby on it. I know they won't see this coming and I can't wait to see how they react. Kofi helps me serve the cake and all we do is look at each other as everyone digs in. Ma is the first to finish and she looks at Chi who looks at me for a second
"Are you for real?" Chi asks and I nod before she engulfs me in a hug
"Congratulations guys!"
"Thank you" I say
"How far along are you?" Ma asks
"I'm four months"
"So you've been lying to me this whole time?" Chi questions
"I'm sorry but I had to"
"Congratulations baby! Do you guys know what you're having?"
"We're having a girl"
"She's is definitely going to be wrapped around Kofi's finger" dad says and we laugh
"He always says that and I have no doubt that'll be the case because of how he is about her right now when she isn't even here yet"
"I can't help myself, this is something I have dreamed about for a while now"
"I hope you're ready for the dirty diapers, the midnight cries bro" Calvin adds
"Yeah..." he drags making everyone including myself laugh
I sit on one of the kitchen stools as I eat my newest craving which is strawberry yoghurt with pineapple pieces in it, while Chi and ma clean up the kitchen. They made me sit down because I shouldn't be on my feet for long and I'm honestly loving this type of treatment. I know they'll get to a point where they will be overdoing it but let me enjoy this now. Once they're done, we all head to the living room where we just talk while a Christmas movie plays. It isn't until 9pm when the last guest leaves, leaving us alone because mom and dad want to spend the night at Chi's.
I leave Kofi downstairs and I walk into the bathroom where I strip and start getting for bed. Once I have a black negligee on and my hair is tied, I lay on the bed waiting for Kofi to join me. He walks into the room moments later, muscles bulging from his golf t-shirt, looking handsome as always and that gets me excited. I don't know if it's the pregnancy or him looking sexy all the time that has me wanting him all day, everyday.
"I thought I'd find you sleeping"
"I was waiting for you"
"Let me get ready for bed and I'll join you"
Five minutes later, he walks out of the bathroom in briefs that make my want for him grow.
"How was today for you?"
"It was good, I had so much fun with everyone"
"Yeah, me too. What did you think of Ms Angeline?"
"I like her, she's so sweet" I tell him
"I'm glad my dad found someone who makes him happy. I just want to see him happy and she seems to be bringing that out of him" he says as I trail my hand down his torso and rest it on his bulge
"Here I am telling you about my dad and you're thinking about sex" he chuckles
"I can't help myself babe, I've been horny all fucking day"
"Okay, so tell me what you want me to do to you"
"I want you to eat my pussy until I can't take it anymore" I tell him and he smiles
"Say no more baby girl"

Artemis
"Let them go, Dante." I whip my head to see a small boy standing the clearing with blonde hair and a green cloak hanging from shoulders. He isn't very tall however he holds his stance well. He doesn't seem to be more than Cassandra's age. Maybe 12 at most. I abruptly turn my head back hearing the man holding a sword to my throat chuckling with a sinister grin. "Oh, poor boy, what are you go to do about it?" The yellow teeth gleam as he begins stalking towards the boy who does not look the least bit fazed. I look around at the other men who are following the leader. I pull Cassandra tighter to my back as I take small steps back. I keep my eye trained on the men but also fear for the naive boy. "Do you really want to test me Dante?" He asks raising a single eyebrow. For a minute the men stop their movements. I see their hesitation for fear... Fear of what? I take the moment to stick Cassandra behind a nearby tree. She crouches down while I pull my sword out from its place. "How do you know my name?" The scoundrel raises his sword challenging towards the boy before taking a final step towards him. Then the unexpected happens. The young boy chuckles so darkly. It sounded almost... demonic. All the men instinctively raise their swords. "Oh Dante, I didn't know your name... but you know someone dear to me." "Spit it out boy!" The once grinning man is now looking around frantically. I continue my eyes scanning the small boy. He looks directly me and gives me a small nod before saying one word that caused all hell to breaks loose. "Artemis." Artemis is not an ordinary girl.
