《Sweetest Escape.》CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

"What is it?" I ask because I can't read the look on his face
"The regular tests are all negative but the digital one is positive"
"What does that mean?"
"It means we have to make an appointment to see an OB/GYN so we can get a more accurate report because this is confusing"
"So you're telling me I have to wait until Monday?"
"Yeah, unless you want me to go get more tests"
"I guess we'll have to wait to get a more accurate result but I can't help but feel uneasy"
"What's making you uneasy?"
"I just...I don't want to disappoint you" I put my head down but he lifts it with his finger so I can look at him
"Why do you feel like you will disappoint me if you aren't pregnant?"
"You've told me how much you want kids and I'm afraid you'll be disappointed if the result doesn't come out positive"
"The first thing is I never want you to feel pressured to do anything for me baby. We already spoke about this and I told you that I'm okay with waiting however long you want us to wait. The second thing is I will be okay with whatever result we get. If you aren't pregnant right now that's okay because I know that we will get that blessing someday so there's no need to stress"
"Okay" I look up at him and he gives me a smile
"I want you to relax while I finish off"
"You don't need my help?"
"No, I'm good"
I throw the tests and the boxes into the trash before I look at my reflection in the mirror. Apart from my face looking a bit plumper than usual, there's really nothing else that shows that I could be pregnant. I close the door behind me then I grab my phone that has two missed calls from Chi. I dial her number and she picks up after three rings
"Did you take the test?"
"I'm good, thanks for asking"
"Thembi I saw you an hour ago. Please bring me out of my misery and tell me what the tests said"
"Three were negative and the digital one was positive"
"Those tests are not always accurate sis so you definitely need to make an appointment with an OB/GYN"
"Yeah that's what I'll do on Monday"
"I'll send you the details of the OB/GYN I had during my pregnancy. She was amazing and I would recommend her to anyone"
"Okay"
"How did Kofi take the news?"
"He was very calm about which worries me a little"
"Why are you worried? You know he's always been a calm guy so what's different now"
"I know that but I don't know if he's mad or sad about it"
"I think you are overthinking everything and you need to relax"
"I just don't want to disappoint him"
"Please don't think like that, everything on earth has its time. If you are meant to be pregnant right now then it'll will turn out that way but if it's not meant to be right now then it won't happen"
"I guess"
"Take it easy mama, I'll talk to you later"
"Okay, bye"
I end up falling asleep and Kofi wakes me up a couple of hours later telling me the food is ready.
"Why didn't you wake me up so I could cook? You cleaned up and I could have done the cooking" I tell him as I grab a plate with the food

"You needed the rest baby"
"Alright, I'll do the dishes then"
"Fine. How do you feel now? You were a bit uneasy earlier"
"I'm calm now. I'm sorry about the way I was acting earlier, I was just overthinking everything"
"You don't have to apologize because I probably would have reacted the way you did and I want you to get it in your head that I would be disappointed"
"I know" I tell him and we spend the rest of the evening playing around like we usually do
Tuesday morning
"Babe we're running late" Kofi shouts from the bottom of the stairs
"I'm coming babe" I shout back, straightening the last section of my hair. Once I'm done, I grab my handbag and head downstairs where I find my very patient husband waiting for me—note the sarcasm
"What took you so long?"
"I was straightening my hair"
"Why did you have to straighten it again? It looked fine"
"I needed to touch it up"
"You know we didn't have much time and you chose to do you hair" he tells me a little attitude in his voice
"So you wanted me to go out of the house with my hair fucked up?"
"I didn't say that but you could have been a bit faster instead of taking twenty minutes"
"Okay sorry, now lets go before we're really late"
The drive to the doctors rooms doesn't take that long because there isn't much traffic on the road. We walk into the rooms and the receptionist hands me a clipboard with some papers to fill in before I take a seat. Close to forty minutes later, I am called in.
"Good morning" the doctor says cheerfully
"Good morning doc" I say as I hand her my file
"Please take a seat"
She takes a moment to read through my file and I take a moment to read her. She is a beautiful, middle aged woman of color with her hair neatly tied into a bun. Her aura is mature, sophisticated and light which I like because there's nothing that sucks more than having a doctor who you feel awkward around.
"Okay Mrs Anani, how may I help you?"
"I took four pregnancy tests and only one was positive so I would like to know whether I'm pregnant or not"
"I can do that for you but I have a few questions to ask"
"Okay"
"When was the last time you had your period?"
"About a month and a half ago"
"Has your cycle always been regular or do you experience irregular periods?"
"My period has been regular since I started getting it"
"Have you had any symptoms?"
"The only symptom I've had is weight gain that I assumed had been caused by me stress eating"
"Alright, where you on any type of birth control?"
"No"
"Okay, please step into the examination room so I can do a sonogram and check if there's a bun baking in your oven" she smiles
I lay on the examination table and she joins us a couple of minutes later and starts setting up her equipment
"This may be a little cold" she tells me as she applies a gel to my stomach.
"If you look closely at the screen you can see a little bean and that is your baby. Congratulations mom and dad"
"I'm pregnant?" I repeat in disbelief because I honestly didn't think I was pregnant
"Yes ma'am. I just need to check a few things and I'll be able to estimate both how far along you are and when you'll be due"

"Okay"
I look over at Kofi who has the biggest smile on his face. I have only seen him with a smile that big when I said yes to being his wife and when I was walking down the aisle so I know that this means a lot to him
"You're unusually quiet babe"
"I'm just taking it all in. You more than anyone else knows how much I have been wanting this and you don't understand how much I appreciate you for this"
"You're going to make me cry babe"
"I don't mean to but I just want to let you know how I feel right now" he tells me and as I'm about to respond, the doctor interrupts
"I'm done here so I need you to wipe the gel off and join me in my office so we can talk"
"Okay doctor"
"I'd like to congratulate you once again on the pregnancy"
"Thank you" we say at the same time
"I would say you are about six weeks pregnant and I would say your due date is May 7. You're going to notice some of the following things take place during your first trimester: sensitivity to smell, mood swings, breast tenderness, cravings for certain foods, among others. This trimester is very crucial because this is when your baby develops and where miscarriages and birth defects are very common so please take it easy"
"Okay"
"I have written down the best prenatal vitamins you can get over the counter and make you sure you grab a few pamphlets in the front so you get all the information you need as you start this journey. Any questions?" She looks at both of us and we shake our heads
"If you don't have any questions then that will be it for today"
"Okay, thank you"
"I'll see you in a month. Have a good day"
"Same to you"
We walk out of the office and Kofi leaves me behind as I pick up some pamphlets. Being the person I am, the kind of person that likes to be well informed about everything, I grab a bunch of pamphlets before heading out where I find my husband parked right in front where he didn't park earlier
"Why did you change your spot?"
"I didn't want you to walk a long way in this heat"
"It's a cute gesture but I wouldn't have minded walking to where the car originally was"
"Thembisa you won't win with me, just accept the gesture"
"Okay fine"
"Am I taking you home or what?"
"Please drop me off at the store and before you say anything, I promise to take it easy"
"Alright"
Silence fills the car and it's not because we have nothing to say to each other, we have so much to say but I'm pretty sure he is trying to wrap his head around everything the same way I am. For some reason I find myself rubbing my stomach even though there isn't a bump yet.
"Has it sunk in yet?"
"Not really"
"When were in there we couldn't really get sentimental because I wanted it to be a private moment when I told you how I feel. Words can't even explain or describe how I feel after seeing our little bean that we created out of love and I want you to know how thankful I am to you for this"
"I mean you didn't give me much choice, your pull out game is nonexistent"
"Classic Thembi, always ruins a sentimental moment with your remarks" he kisses his teeth, making me giggle
"I was kidding babe"
"As I was saying, you will never truly understand what this moment means"
"Well, I didn't do this by my self so thank you for giving me this gift even though it came earlier than I had planned. All the worries I had about having a baby now disappeared when I saw our little bean and I know that I have an amazing partner who is going to be an amazing dad"
"You're going to be an amazing mom" he tells me and I smile
"I think I know when we conceived"
"When was it?" I ask
"Remember that night when we went out and had back to back shots of tequila?"
"Oh yeah, that night was wild and I'm not surprised that this is the end result" we both laugh
"Me too"
"I'll call you when I feel like heading home" I tell him as he pulls up outside the store
"Okay babe, I'll see you later"
"I love you"
'I love you too' he tells me before I kiss him and walk into my office where I find Chi waiting
"Hey, you didn't tell me that you were stopping by"
"Hey, I was in the area and I decided to stop by so I could invite you over for dinner tonight"
"Oh cool, what time do you want us to be there?"
"Around 7pm"
"Okay"
"Where are you coming from?"
"I came from that OB/GYN you referred me to"
"Are you preggo or not?" She questions making me nervous because I have to keep my pregnancy from her for now and I haven't always been the best liar
"She did a sonogram and it turns out I'm not pregnant"
"I'm sorry, I know how much you've been wanting this"
"It's okay, our time will come" I lie once again and I feel bad about it because I'm lying to her but Kofi and I decided that we're going to keep this between us until I am in my second trimester
"I should get going now, I'll see you later"
"Bye"
Following the doctors order, Kofi picks me up from the store earlier than usual. We get home and I relax on the couch watching Basketball Wives LA while Kofi finishes off his work. Around 6pm we start getting ready and I settle for a blue shirt with white vertical lines, white jeans and white sandals. Chi lives in the city center so a drive that should have taken seventeen minutes ends up taking thirty because of drivers who make you question how they even got their licenses.
'Ding dong' the doorbell goes off and seconds later, she opens the door.
"Hey guys, come in"
"Hey Chi" we both say as we step into the house that smells absolutely divine
"What have you made for us?"
"It's Tuesday so that means we're having tacos"
"Oh great. I like the new color scheme" I tell her as I look around the living room and the kitchen area
"Thanks, your place inspired it"
"You're basically saying you copied me"
"Not exactly, I just borrowed your ideas"
"Whatever. Where's baby Alaïa?"
"She's with her grandma tonight"
"Oh, just make sure you don't have too much fun otherwise she'll have a sibling very soon"
"She's already a handful so us having another one right now is not even in the picture"
"I hope you keep the same energy" I say lowly
"What did you say?"
"Nothing"
"Dinner is ready, you guys can wash your hands"
After washing our hands, we make our way to the table, say grace then dish up our food.
"Thembi why aren't you drinking wine today?" Chi asks and all I can think is 'fuck'
"I'm on this no alcohol diet"
"Really?" She asks sarcastically
"Yeah"
"Okay then, let's make a toast to us having a great evening" she says and I raise my glass with water and cheers with everyone

8 2735A Girl and Her Food
When a lost girl wakes up without a name, she quickly finds herself alone in a way that people around her can’t fix. Without a real plan and desperate to find what’s wrong with her, she thrashes and bites to stay alive. But human beings are weak things, that band together for strength, no matter who we are. Now if only she could work up the courage to ask one question... It’s normal to get stronger when you drink the blood of monsters. Right? Things to expect: - A powerful but kinda neurotic and emotional protagonist, with some degree of weak to strong. Or maybe strong to stronger, honestly. She's pretty rational and practical about things but won't always make the best decisions, so be warned if you super-dislike characters doing dumb stuff for emotional reasons sometimes. - Lots of dialogue and characterization, especially as we get more into it. It's focused on a single POV, but there might be some sections of other POVs later on, I'm not sure right now. - Magic is on the softer side, but I'll try to keep things fleshed out enough to avoid any obvious "well-established magic could have seemingly instantly solved this problem" moments. - I didn't add the mystery tag because I feel like it implies that this is a detective novel or something, but the story is absolutely incredibly opaque at times. So you'll have the most fun if you go into it trying to puzzle out the nature of events before they're explicitly explained!😇 - Also, I added the genre for completion, but it's gonna take a while to get to the romance. Please wait warmly and have some tea. Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge!
