《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 79: Rose's birthday

I already wake up excited as if it was almost my birthday and not Rose's but I am just excited to see her again and celebrate her birthday together tomorrow.

Work drags a little as I am looking forward to pick her up from school today.

This weekend she'll stay at my apartment and I couldn't be happier about it. Her dad texted me that he will put everything she needs into her school backpack since I pretty much already have most of the things she needs here.

I have some clothes here for her, a toothbrush, bathroom utensils, a bed and a toybox.

When I went grocery shopping yesterday, I made sure to buy some more juice and a few snacks along with wrapping paper to wrap her gift in.

I had a few more phone calls with Scar, concerning Rose's party because she wanted to celebrate with her friends and who am I to say no to that?

It's the middle of March, so the weather is a little unpredictable and going outside can work out great but can also totally go wrong, so we decided on an indoor playground, where Rose and her friends can run around in and play.

I will be there to watch them.

We thought about Rose's dad being there as well but that might just escalate and I don't want to do that to Rose, especially not on her birthday and in front of her friends.

Rose didn't seem to mind that she'll see her father after her birthday and not on the day itself.

Maybe some of the other parents will stay for a while and watch the kids with me but that's up to them.

I am okay with watching them by myself and after all, there are always people there who also pay attention to what the kids are doing.

Rose was allowed to invite six friends, so there'll be seven children in total.

We booked a table there as well where I can sit at and read or so and later on, they will serve fries, chicken nuggets and juice.

Rose already gave the invitations to her friends and they all agreed to come there.

It's a little further away, so I will take Scar's car to drive us there.

Luckily, Rose's friends are brought there by their parents so I don't have to take care of that as well.

Scarlett also already paid for everything, so there should be nothing to worry about. All I have to do is sit there and pay a bit attention to the kids, so they don't get hurt.

After work, I take a subway towards Scar's house to get her car for the weekend. Rose's school ended like two hours ago but she'll be with one of her friends on the playground of the school until I'm getting there. We talked it through with her friend's mom, so it's all settled.

I pull up to the parking lot and turn the car off and get out.

Since I already was here two or three times with Scar, I know where to go and when I get close to the playground, I can hear Rose already laughing.

I watch her and her friend run around, probably playing catch and the mom sitting on a bench nearby, typing something on her phone before putting it away and noticing me. She smiles and I go to sit next to her but Rose notices me before I can sit.

"Mama!" She exclaims and gains some extra speed, running towards me. I get ready to catch her and lift her into the air, making her laugh.

"Hey, my little sunshine." I greet her and place her back down.

For now that's it with the greeting because Rose's friend caught up and Rose has to run away again.

I chuckle and sit down next to the mom. We do some small talk before the children seem to be tired out and come to us. Rose climbs onto my lap.

"Tomorrow is my birthday!" She tells me excitedly and I nod, brushing some sweaty strains from her face.

"I know, sweetie and I am excited about it." I tell her and she nods.

"Me too!" She agrees. "But we still have to make a cake."

Her friend looks over with big eyes and asks what kind of cake since she will be there too tomorrow but Rose just grins and says it'll be a surprise.

"How about we head home to make the cake?" I offer when I see that the other friend's mom starts to grab her things, getting ready to go home as well.

"Yess." Rose says and wraps her arms around me. I laugh and tell her we also need to carry her backpack, so she puts it on and I give her a piggy back ride to the car.

I already bought all the ingredients to the cake beforehand, so we can start baking whenever Rose is in the mood for.

We arrive at my apartment and get out of our shoes and coats before washing our hands.

Rose takes her backpack to her room and unpacks Mr. Mouve and puts him on her bed, waiting for her to go to sleep later today.

I'm in the kitchen, drinking a glass of water and filling her a glass of juice. She comes into the kitchen and her eyes light up a little at the glass of juice.

"Is it apple?" She asks, climbing onto a bar stool and taking the glass.

"Of course it is. Orange is for the morning and apple is for the afternoon." I tell her and she smiles, happy that I remembered. She drinks half the glass before putting it down.

"Can we bake the cake now?" She asks and leans a little onto the counter in front of her. I salute, making her giggle.

"Whatever you want, Ma'am." I say in a monotone voice. Rose grins at my silliness and I ruffle her hair a little.

"Chocolate, right?" I ask while getting the ingredients out and putting them onto the counter.

Rose nods in agreement and watches me before sliding down from the stool and coming to stand next to me. She's a little too small to properly use the counter, so I get her a little stool to stand on, so she can reach everything.

"Alright, ladies and gentlemen, this is no drill, this is serious. We need to bake a cake for a special girl's birthday and it needs to be amazing. I expect full concentration and hard work." I say in a fake commanding tone while patrolling around the island. Rose giggles.

"Ay, ay, Ma'am." She says and salutes with a snicker. I come to stand next to her and open my phone to look at the receipt.

I read over it and start measuring the different ingredients, so Rose can put them in the bowl. She tells me about her day at school and how all her friends said they were super excited about tomorrow. I smile at her story and nod along.

Once all the ingredients are inside the bowl, the most important one needs to be added.

I grab the chocolate and we break it into pieces, putting half of it into a bowl that I put in the microwave, so it can melt. The rest comes into the cake as it is.

We let the chocolate cool of a bit and I grab a spatula to help put the batter into the pan.

When I turn around, I catch Rose putting her finger into her mouth and grinning innocently at me.

I put the spatula down and narrow my eyes a little at her, a little smirk on my lips.

"Did you just steal something of the melted chocolate?" I ask and Rose shakes her head but already giggles a little. I narrow my eyes a little more, slowly approaching her and she watches me with sparkling, anticipating eyes.

"I think you did." I say lowly before quickly lifting her up and tickling her. She squeals and laughs and it makes my heart feel so warm and happy.

She wiggles a little in my hold and kicks her legs a little but I show no mercy and continue to tickle her.

After a bit I stop though, so she can catch her breath and I put her back down onto the stool.

Her laugh fades a little and she has a mischievous grin on her lips, slowly reaching for the melted chocolate again.

I fake gasp and reach out for her. She squeals and hops off the stool to run away.

I start chasing after her and she squeaks a little when she notices and runs around my living room and kitchen. Once I catch her, I lift her up again and throw her a little into the air, catching her afterwards. She laughs and has a wide smile on her face.

"Again!" She demands with giggles but I shake my head.

"First we have to finish the cake." I tell her and carry her over to the kitchen isle, sitting her down on it onto a clean spot.

We mix the melted chocolate under and pour the batter into the pan before I put it into the oven.

While we wait, we goof around a little more and the longer we do so, the more I can tell she's getting exhausted.

When the cake is ready, Rose lays on the couch, exhausted from the chasing around, so I take care of the cake by myself.

I put the tray onto the kitchen isle to let the cake cool off and walk back over to Rose. She's cuddled into the blanket and looks like she's about to fall asleep. I sit down next to her and wave my hand gently through her hair.

"How about we have some dinner and get you to bed, hm? It's way more comfortable there." I suggest and Rose nods and makes grabby hands at me that completely melt my heart.

So, I pick her up and she rests her head on my shoulder while I carry her back to the kitchen.

"How big is your hunger?" I ask and look down at her.

She thinks about it before telling me she would like to have a sandwich. I nod and place her onto the counter from where she watches me make two sandwiches.

While she eats sitting on the counter, I lean against it and we eat in silence. Once we are done, I put our plates into the sink and lift her off the counter, so she can go to her room and change into her pajamas.

When she is done, she comes back out and looks even more tired than before. We go into the bathroom and brush our teeth, pulling funny faces in the mirror that make her smile.

After that I brush her hair and braid it. We go to her room and she picks a book she wants me to read to her and I sit down next to her, so she can cuddle into me.

I read the book to her and glance over every once in a while. When her eyes start to stay closed longer when she blinks, I put the bookmark between the pages and lay the book onto the ground next to her bed.

"Can we cuddle a bit more?" She asks sleepily and I smile softly and scoot down.

"Of course we can, my sweet Rosie." I reply and she smiles a little at the name, cuddling into my side.

I gently brush my fingertips over her back, drawing random patterns and by the way she reacts, I can tell that she really enjoys it.

Like mother like daughter I guess.

"I love you, Mommy." She mumbles, almost half asleep and if I wasn't in this position, I would have for sure made a noise at her words. Something between a cheer and a happy squeal.

So far, Scarlett always was Mommy and I was Mama, which I am more than okay with but hearing Rose calling me Mommy too is just...it makes me feel like she values Scarlett and me on the same level and I couldn't be more honored because I know how close she is with Scar and I never thought I could ever come close to that.

"I love you too, sweetheart." I reply and she hums a little in reply.

While I still cheer about what she called me, I notice her breathing evening out and after a few more moments, I carefully climb out of bed, giving her a gentle kiss before picking up the book and placing it back on the shelf. I turn off the light and close the door, leaving a small gap.

I am quick to get ready for bed myself, wanting to have all the energy possible for the upcoming day.

Before falling asleep, I text a little with Scarlett, not wanting to wake Rose up with being on a call since I left my door open a bit as well, just in case.

Scarlett and I agree on a time where she will call tomorrow to talk to Rose before we say goodnight and I fall asleep.

The next day, I am woken up by a body flapping down on me and I huff a little, feeling the air being pressed out of my lungs before the body sits up on my stomach.

"Mama, Mama! Wake up, it's my birthday!" Rose cheers and I open my eyes to see an excited Rose sitting on top of me, a huge smile on her face. I can't help it but to smile back.

"Yes, it is, cupcake. You are now seven years old, such a big girl." I say and brush some hair out of her face.

She bounces a little on my stomach but I'll let her do it because my bladder isn't full so it's not too bad.

"Yes, I am." She says proudly and grins.

"Where did the time go? And where did my sweet little dolphin go? Who should I cuddle with and tickle now?" I pretend to sulk and Rose giggles a little.

"You can still do that with me, Mama. I'm not too big for that." She tells me and bounces again. I smile again and sit up to wrap my arms around her.

"Puh, then I'm relieved." I say and kiss her hair. Rose giggles a little and hugs me back.

"I'm seven now." She tells me excitedly and I nod.

"I know, sweetie, how does it feel?" I ask and she thinks about it.

"It feels like being six but more exciting because I get a birthday party." She tells me honestly with a grin and I chuckle a bit before peppering her face in kisses, making her giggle.

"Yes, you do." I say and kiss her forehead one last time. She nods and I pad her legs.

"How about we get up and get some breakfast into your seven year old tummy, so you're all ready for the day." I suggest and poke her tummy, making her squirm a little and nod before she climbs off me and slides off the bed.

I put on some fuzzy socks and get out as well, following her into the living room where she squeals and jumps up and down when she sees the present on the coffee table.

"Is that for me?" She asks and looks at me. I smile softly and nod.

"It sure is, happy birthday, little dolphin." I say and her eyes grow big as she runs to it and starts to rip off the wrapping paper.

I lean against the armrest of the couch and watch her.

She gasps when she gets out a box and looks at the pictures on it before spinning around to me.

"What is this?" She asks, still excited but also a bit confused.

"It's a special lamp that will project lights onto the ceiling and walls of your room to make it look like you're underwater." I explain and her eyes grow impossibly bigger.

"So, it's like diving inside my room?" She asks and jumps up and down with the box in her hands. I nod and she looks at the box and then at me.

"Can we try it? Pleaseeee?" She begs and I smile softly.

"Of course, it's your birthday and your gift." I say and she runs off to her room, where I follow her to.

I help her get the projector out of the box and set it up before closing her blinds to darken the room a bit more. She watches as I plug the projector in and a second later, I can hear her whisper "woah".

The ceiling and the walls are covered in light blue light that looks like moving waves and I have to admit, it's even cooler than I imagined.

"This is so awesome." Rose whispers and I nod in agreement. She comes over to me and hugs me tightly. I return the hug.

"Thank you so much for the present." She says and I kiss her temple.

"You're welcome, sweetie." I reply and let her go to lay on the carpet and watch the lights. I tell her I'll be in the kitchen making breakfast while she's watching the lights.

I start mixing the batter for the pancakes and just as I am about to pour it into the pan, my phone buzzes and I pick it up, smiling when I see it is Scarlett. I take the call and smile when she pops up on my screen.

"Good morning and congratulations to you too for having Rose seven years ago." I greet her and she smiles widely.

"Good morning, thank you angel." She says, her voice raspy since it is pretty early for her.

"My little baby is seven now." She sighs and I smile softly and nod.

"She is." I agree and Scar nods, getting lost in memory for a few seconds.

"Wanna talk to the birthday girl?" I ask and she nods.

"Sweetie, there is someone on the phone who wants to talk to you."

Seconds later Rose comes running out of her room, coming to a halt next to me and I hand her the phone.

She squeals in excitement and greets her mom before taking her to the living room to get comfortable on the couch. I smile at her before continuing her pancakes.

When they are ready, I call her over and she brings the phone with her and I prop it up against a cartoon of juice before helping Rose onto the bar stool. Her eyes grow big at the pancakes in front of her.

"They have sprinkles!" She exclaims and holds her plate up a little for Scarlett to see.

"Yes, they are special birthday pancakes." I tell her and she cheers.

I smile and hand her the whipped cream while cutting up some fruits to go along with the not so healthy breakfast. After that I join her at the counter and eat my breakfast as well.

Because it's a special day and Scar is only over the phone here, we allow her to speak while eating, as long as her mouth isn't too full.

Eventually we have to say goodbye to Scar and she promises that Rose will get her present as soon as she's back in New York.

Rose helps me to pack the bag for the indoor playground, adding socks to the bag and helping me put the cake into something to transport it. I also grab a book for me to read for when the kids are playing and I'm bored.

Turns out, I didn't have to bring the book.

After we arrived, we were led to the table where all our things will be and where they already set up décor, of course Avengers themed, because Rose wanted her mom to be as much a part of this as possible.

I put the cake onto the table and we put on our socks.

Rose looked around excitedly but stayed by my side, waiting for me to give her the go to play.

But before I could do so, the first of her friends arrived and they started hugging and goofing around. I greeted the moms and thanked them for bringing their kids and for Rose's presents that we put on an extra table.

Every time the kids wanted to go play, someone new arrived and the whole greeting and squealing started again.

Eventually, everyone was there and we let the children go and play.

I talked a little bit to the mothers who stayed a little longer and was honestly positively surprised how not-judgmental they were. None of them seemed to have a problem with me being Rose's mom and Scarlett's girlfriend and it honestly made me really happy.

After half an hour of playtime, we called the children back for cake and juice and after that the other moms left. That was the moment where I thought I could have some time to read but I didn't. Rose tugged on my hand to come play with them and that's what I've been doing for the last half hour.

So far we were only on the air dinosaur that has a mouth that opens, so the children can climb in and then it closes and there's a slide in the back.

They had their fun pushing me out of the mouth when it started closing and I always let them, pretending to fall onto the bouncy floor underneath.

The next thing they pull me to is the climbing cage with various little passageways that they can almost run through like this while I have to crouch down to fit.

A long game of catch started but every time I caught someone, they had to help me catch the others. But it was still pretty exhausting because those little monsters are quick.

After that we had another drinking and toilet break and by the look on Rose's face, she's having a blast and that's all that matters.

She pulls me with them again and I follow her to a bouncy castle.

We jump around there and they start to pile on each other while giggling, just goofing around and being children, which makes me really happy to watch.
