《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 75: Snow day

Pov y/n
When I wake up the next morning and grab my phone, I am positively surprised to see that the facetime call is still on.
But now, Scarlett is also deep asleep, the phone probably propped up against something on her table, showing the darkness in her room and the shadows of her sleeping form under the covers.
Even though I can't really see her, I could look at this forever and not get bored, just knowing she is right there on the other end of the call.
But a quick glance at my watch tells me I should end the call if I don't want to risk waking her up with my alarm. I send an air kiss her way before ending the call. It almost hurts me to do so but I really don't want to risk to wake her up. Instead, I send her a good morning message and sit up.
The apartment feels cooler than usual and I hurry to get up and put some warm socks on. I also throw a robe on and put slippers on before going into the kitchen.
When I look out the window, I am stunned, to say the least.
Big, white snowflakes fall from the sky and looking down, I see that it must have been like this for almost the whole night because the streets are covered by snow and not just a bit. There are barely people out yet but from the looks of it, the snow is at least half a meter high.
Even back home, we never had this much snow. I know it probably causes problems but it looks incredible. The street lights shine onto the snow, making it sparkle a little.
I open a window and am met with a freezing breeze and pull the robe tighter around me.
It is almost silent outside, which is extremely rare for New York.
But for one, most of the cars probably can't drive right now and second, the layers of snow swallow every other sound. It truly is magical and I feel my heart pounding in my chest at the sight and excitement warms my body.
I close the window again and turn on the heating before grabbing my phone and taking a good amount of pictures, sending Scarlett a few as well.
After that, I put my phone on the counter and start to make breakfast. While the water slowly starts to boil, I make some French toast.
My eyes dart to the window every now and then, still mesmerized by the outside beauty.
I look at the clock, 7:18 am, I still have some time left before I need to get to work.
Luckily, it's not that far and I can walk because I doubt that busses are safe right now and the subway may also have some trouble.
I eat my breakfast in peace when suddenly my phone rings and I almost jump at the unexpected noise. The number isn't familiar but I still take the call, might be something important.
"Hello?" I ask and lean back a little.
"Y/n?" A man's voice asks and I frown a little.
"Yes?" I answer but almost roll my eyes when I recognize who is speaking to me.
"I need you to take care of Rose today. Due to the snow, she has no school today but I'm not home either." He says and I raise my eyebrows a little.
Not because Rose has a day off, I honestly understand that with the amount of snow outside but because he seems to assume that I have a free day as well.

"I would love to but-"
"Good." He cuts me off and I huff a little. "We are headed your way now, we'll be there in ten minutes." And with that, the phone call ends and I look dumbfounded at my phone.
Did he just hang up on me even though I wasn't finished with answering?
What a dick.
But I don't have time for that now.
I quickly get up and get dressed, keeping an eye on the clock.
Even though it is quite early, I try to call my job. I breathe out happily when someone answers.
I quickly tell them what's going on and ask if I can get a day off. While I wait on their answer, I nibble on my lip and pace up and down the living room.
When the answer is 'no', I internally curse.
Brandon and Brooke both already called in today, they can't make it because of the snow since they live a little further away. I listen to the response I get and sigh a little but agree and hang up after saying goodbye. Looks like I'm gonna take Rose to work with me today.
I quickly put on shoes and a warm jacket and head downstairs, ready to pick up Rose.
The snow really is pretty high and I see why they let the schools closed today.
I wait in the entrance to my building, not wanting to get my pants all too wet.
It doesn't take long until the car pulls up and I raise an eyebrow.
So, Rose's dad was able to drive a car through this snowy mess but still decides that it's best if I take care of Rose?
With no car whatsoever?
I mean I could take Scar's but the danger of getting into an accident is too high.
Her dad comes out first and opens the back door, picking Rose up and closing the door behind her.
She looks adorable in her snow suit and I recognize the bear hat from the zoo. Her dad carries her over to me and I take her into my arms. She still seems a little tired and leans her head against my shoulder.
"You behave, okay?" He says to Rose, who nods a little. He looks at me.
"I'll text you when I can pick her up again." He says and turns around and leaves us there, once again cutting off any answer I might could have given him.
I press my lips together but decide not to curse at him since he is still Rose's dad and I'm holding her right now. He gets into the car and I turn around, carrying Rose inside since we still have a bit of time before we have to leave.
I set her down once we are inside and help her out of her shoes and jacket. She still seems a little tired and is clingy, so I pick her up again and go to the kitchen with her and sit down, having her in my lap while finishing my breakfast.
She leans against me and plays with my one hand. When I am done with breakfast, I gently wave my hand through her hair.
"Are you still a little tired, sweetie?" I ask and she nods, looking up at me and shuffling to sit sidewards on my lap.
"I had a nightmare last night and didn't sleep well." She tells me and leans her head back against my shoulder. I wrap my arms around her and rub her back to give her some comfort.

"I'm sorry you had a nightmare. Do you want to tell me about it?" I ask and she hums before answering.
"I don't really remember it anymore. I just know it was scary." She tells me and I nod, placing a kiss on top of her head.
"You are safe now, baby. I wouldn't let anything happen to you." I assure her and hold her a little tighter, which she seems to find comforting.
"Do you have juice? Dad didn't have any this morning." She asks and I get up with her again.
"I am pretty sure I do." I say and walk to the fridge, opening it. I take out the orange juice and set Rose down on a barstool before getting her a glass and filling it with juice. She smiles up at me and drinks it.
"That is good juice, even better than the one Mommy always buys." She decides and I smile softly at her.
"Don't let her hear that." I pretend to look around and put my finger over my lips. Rose giggles a little and plays along, pretending to look around before taking another sip. My heart feels a little lighter, seeing she is feeling better.
"What are we gonna do today, Mama?" She asks after finishing her juice. I take the glass from her and put it into my sink before turning back around to her.
"I'm gonna show you where I work. I know, it might not be very interesting and I'm sorry in advance but the call this morning took me a little by surprise." I tell her honestly.
Even though she's a child, she's not dumb and I won't lie to her. She nods and carefully slides off the chair, waling around the kitchen isle.
"That sounds like fun!" She says and grins at me. I am a bit relieved she doesn't seem to mind and smile, offering her my hand that she takes.
"And hopefully it will be." I agree and she nods along while I walk into her room.
"But just in case, I have to concentrate on work and can't play with you a lot, lets take some toys with us, so you won't get bored." I offer and Rose nods, tapping her chin in thought and looking around her room.
She lets go of my hand and I watch as she goes to the shelf and pulls out her coloring book before going to her toybox and getting crayons out of there, along with some toys.
"That's a great choice." I tell her when she shows me and her face lights up.
She follows me to my room, where I keep the backpack I always take to work with me and we place her things inside. While she goes to the toilet, I grab some granola bars and crackers from the cabinet in the kitchen to have a snack for her.
We get all dressed up again and this time I put a pair of waterproof pants on because we are about to walk through snow. The clock tells me we are a bit early but I know we will take a little while longer to get there.
I put on the backpack and tug Rose's hat right, before taking her hand and leaving the apartment.
Now, that the energy is back up again, Rose is excited to be outside. The snow is pretty high for her and the first few steps she has fun to walk through it but it soon becomes too exhausting and we switch to the little path a caretaker already freed from most of the snow. We are careful not to slip and I hold her hand, catching her a few times before she can fall to the ground. But she doesn't seem to mind at all, she just giggles and moves on.
Eventually we arrive at the building in time and take the elevator upstairs. Rose looks around the room and waves to the people in the front of this level.
Some of them wave back and Rose grins happily. I lead her into mine and Brooke's office, which will be only mine today since Brooke can't make it.
There I get rid of my coat while Rose gets out of her snow suit and we hang it up close to the heating so it'll be dry when we leave. We also get out of our hats and gloves.
Rose looks around my office and excitedly turns around when she sees her drawing above my desk.
"You put it up?" She asks and points to it. I smile at her and nod.
"Of course, it makes me smile every day." I reply honestly because it really does make me happy.
Rose's smile grows and she looks back at the picture before looking at the rest of my office. I let her explore everything and tell her I'm in the kitchen to boil some water. When I reenter, I chuckle, seeing her in my office chair.
"Can you spin me around? Mommy says I'm too young to have a spinning desk chair because I would only spin and don't do my homework." Rose explains and I grin, walking towards her and starting to spin her.
She squeals and giggles. I continue to spin her but not too fast because I don't want her to get sick. It's really nice to hear her giggles filling the room.
After a few minutes I stop and help her off the chair. She almost trips but I hold her up and she laughs to herself as she tells me how the world is still spinning. I take her hand and slowly spin her the other way. She looks at me as if I just did something huge.
"It stopped spinning. Are you a wizard?" She asks, her tone genuinely curious, making me grin a bit.
"No, it's just a trick for when you get off something that spins, just move into the other direction and it'll stop quicker." I explain and she nods, still looking at me as if I've been withholding some magic until now.
My phone buzzes on the desk and I take it, surprised to see that Scarlett is video calling me. I take the call and her face fills my screen.
"Mommy!" Rose exclaims and claps excitedly. "I miss you."
Scarlett seems a little stunned to see Rose with me but her expression quickly changes and goes soft.
"Hey, my sweetheart. I miss you too." She replies and Rose beams at her mother.
"What are you doing with y/n?"
"There was so much snow this morning that the school called and said we have a day off because of it. Isn't that cool? Dad didn't like it though because he doesn't have time today and a lot of work to do, so he brought me to Mama and now we are at her work and she even has a spinning chair. Oh, and she put my drawing up!" Rose rambles excitedly and points to it. I reangle the phone, so Scar can see.
"Wow, that's amazing! It sounds like an exciting day." She says happily and Rose nods.
"When are you gonna call me? I miss you so much." Rose says and leans against me.
I wrap one arm around her body as the other holds up the phone in front of us as I kneeled down so Rose could see as well.
"I will very soon, Rosie. I had a lot of meetings the first week but now I should have more spare time in the evenings. How about I call you tonight and you can tell me everything that happened?" She offers and Rose nods excitedly.
For now that seems to be enough for Rose and she looks around my office further, also looking at Brooke's side. I get up and slowly follow her, making sure nothing happens.
"Why are you calling?" I ask Scar and she sighs a little.
"I saw the pictures you sent this morning and was a little worried if you'd be able to go to work but it seems like it worked out." She smiles a little before frowning.
"Did her dad really just bought her over?" Her voice is a bit more silent and I can tell by her expression that she is slowly growing angry.
So, I wave it off, not wanting her to stress about it.
"He called ten minutes before to let me know but it's alright, I called in work and they told me I could bring Rose." I tell her and see her frown deepening.
"So, he just assumed you'd be able to take care of Rose? He didn't even care about your job?" She asks and I nod.
"It's okay though, I'm handling it." I assure her but she shakes her head.
"I will definitely talk to him. But thank you so much for taking care of Rosie, really." She says and smiles.
"You're welcome." I reply and then we say our 'I love you' and 'goodbye'.
Rose is done with looking around and comes back to me.
"How about we check on the tea?" I offer and she nods, taking my hand, so I lead the way. The tea is done and I take it with me to the office. Just as I'm about to turn on the computer, Jordan sticks his head inside the office.
"Hey, y/n, just wanted to say good morning and check if you...well, hello there." He says, noticing Rose who looks up at him.
I get up to talk to Jordan and hold my hand out for Rose, to introduce her. She takes my hand and looks at Jordan interested.
"Rosie, this is Jordan, my coworker." I introduce him and he smiles at her. Rose looks him up and down before smiling back.
"Jordan, this is Rose, my..." I trail off, unsure how to introduce Rose.
She's more than just my girlfriend's daughter to me but I'm not sure if I could introduce her as my own daughter. Rose looks up at me.
"Did you forget the word, Mama? It's daughter." She says innocently and my heart beats a little faster but I try to play it cool and nod.
"Yes, thank you, sweetie. She's my daughter." I continue and it feels weird and good at the same time to say this.
Rose has been calling me 'Mama' for a while now but I never called her my daughter because I wasn't sure if she would be okay with it but apparently she is more than okay with it.
Jordan smiles softly at her.
"Nice to meet you, Rose." He says and Rose smiles back. "Are you helping your mom with work today?"
Rose nods proudly. "I have no school today, so I am at work with her." She tells him and my heart flutters a little at their conversation.
It feels unusual for someone else to call me her mom but at the same time it feels so good and natural because I feel like her mom and she is my daughter to me.
Jordan and Rose talk a little longer before he has to go.
After that, I actually have some papers to fill out and write, so Rose takes her coloring book and crayons and decides to sit on the ground and color.
It keeps her occupied for a good while and once she is bored of that, she gets out her toys and plays with them a little.
Lunch comes and I make us sandwiches in the kitchen.
The hours after lunch are similar to the ones before. Rose plays with her toys and colors a bit while having some crackers in between.
Once I am done with my work, I take her on a tour through the workplace and she is excited to look at the lab I'm working it.
She says it's cooler than the ones they have in school because there they only have sinks and nothing that looks so cool.
I chuckle a bit and tell her that when she gets older and into middle and high school, there will be cooler labs.
Not as cool as mine but better than now. She accepts the fact and we walk back to my office. On the way there, we talk to one of the people in the front area and he allows Rose to look at his desk at well.
At 4 pm, my day is over and we head back home. The snow is still there but the streets are mostly cleaned of the snow and we are able to walk home without having to walk through the high snow.
I can tell that Rose is getting a little tired from the exciting day and her lack of sleep tonight. When we get home, we get into comfy clothes and cuddle together on the couch. Rose snuggles into my side and I pull the blanket over us.
"Do you know what we learned yesterday in school?" She asks and looks up at me. I brush some hair out of her face and shake my head.
"What did you learn about?" I ask and she sits up a little to be able to look at me better.
"We learned about love because it was love day." She explains and I remember it was Valentine's Day yesterday.
"Our teacher told us that love can be between a girl and a boy but also between two girls and two boys and that that's just as normal as between a girl and a boy. She also taught us that sometimes, people think it is not okay or weird when to girls or boys like each other but it's not.
It is okay to be curious about it and have questions and that we can ask. Because asking is better than assuming or being scared. Some people get mean when they get scared because they don't understand something. And being mean to someone, just because of who they like is not okay. Everyone is allowed to like who they want, no matter if boy or girl."
I look at Rose, who proudly looks at me and it makes me truly happy that her teacher taught them that.
I am aware that some parents have a problem with their children being taught about this stuff in school but in my opinion it is so important.
They shouldn't have to be scared because of who they like. Her teacher handled the situation pretty well and I think it may be in relation to what happened back in December between Rose and that one boy.
Of course, children can't always understand the concept of love and how it can be seen as wrong or right, so I think telling them it's okay to ask questions, is the right way of handling this.
"That is great Rosie. It is a very important lesson." I say and Rose cuddles into me again, nodding.
"I told her that I have to moms and that you love each other and she said that's great and she hopes you will be happy." She tells me and I smile down at her, my heart growing with pride for this little girl.
She not just knows and accepts that we are two women loving each other, she is also excited and happy about it and that's how it should be.
People should support each other, no matter what their sexuality is.
Children should be able to be proud to talk about their parents, no matter if they're the same sex or not. And Rose seems to understand that and it just makes me so proud and happy to know that there is one more person growing up, knowing they can love whoever they want.

A sudden attraction leads to an unexpected test result that forces the two of them to make a choice, and start defining what kind of relationship this really is. I know it's a little odd to have posted both the prequel and the sequel in my Animephile before getting to this one, but honestly >_> it felt like this one (and its interwined twin that I started writing about half way through it, and will edit when this one is done) was just too smutty. I'm cleaning it up and toning it down to meet the rating as I go back through it.I'm only scheduling one chapter a week, because I'm also starting something in a new universe that I hope to have ready to begin posting sometime this summer.
