《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 62: Back home

Pov y/n

The last day is similar to the ones before, we spend a lot of time outside and this time, I show them a different part of the forest.

There's a huge habitat there with deer's inside. They get food and water there and have a huge space to walk around it.

Rose is very excited about it and stares through the fence for at least 10 minutes before we move to the next spot, where she also looks at the deer's.

But Scarlett and I don't mind, as we talk about random things and just enjoy our last day here.

Later on we meet up with Bennett, who wanted to go to the frozen lake again. Rose goes with him and Scarlett and I spend some time to ourselves, mostly cuddling and being cheesy.

I feel totally relaxed and can tell, that she feels very similar and it makes me happy to see that she was able to escape the stress back at home for a little while.

Rose doesn't really want to go back home to New York because she insists that it's way more fun here.

She wanted to draw after dinner and when I look over her shoulder, I see that she draws a picture showing us all in front of a Christmas tree. I smile softly and kiss the top of her head, she really seems to like my family, which makes me incredibly happy.

But she isn't the only one sad that we're leaving. My Mom and siblings are sad as well.

Of course, I would also like to stay a little longer but I also like New York and I didn't move there for nothing. Staying longer is not an option though because Rose will spend a few days at her dad's since he also wanted to celebrate Christmas with her.

On our last night, Rose sleeps in the same room as Marla and Bennett again since she won't see them in a while. I don't mind because then Scarlett and I can cuddle all night.

The next day has a bit of a weird atmosphere hanging above us. We all know, that Scar, Rose and I will leave after breakfast but no one wants to think of that.

Breakfast is great and we laugh when Marla tries to flip her pancake on her plate.

As excepted, it doesn't work and she pouts a bit. We allow Rose to try it once but it also doesn't work, but she doesn't mind and laughs with us.

After breakfast, Mom already says goodbye because she has to go back to work.

While I carry down the suitcases with the help of Marla, Scar and Rose say goodbye to Mom.

Just as I get back down, I watch my girlfriend and Mom hug and by the movement of my Mom's lips, I can tell that she whispers something into Scar's ear.

When they pull away, Scar smiles widely at her and nods before looking to me, her eyes soft and full of love.

Rose gives my Mom another hug, asking if we can come back and Mom tells her they are always welcome.

That makes Rose smile and she announces that she will come back because she needs to check on the deer's and go swimming in the lake.

We wave as we get into the car. Marla and Bennet both wanted to take us, so the rest of us squeezes into the back of the car. Mom waves back before pulling the door closed and walking down the street towards her work place.

Soft music plays from the radio and when a song we all know comes on, we all hum along and I can't wipe the smile on my face away, knowing that my two families get along greatly.

Way too fast we arrive at the train station and when our train arrives, we hug the twins goodbye and they promise Rose to call me over facetime, so they can see each other again.

Scarlett and I take Rose with us into the train and look for our seats. We settle down and Rose almost presses her face against the window to see Marla and Bennett waving at us. She waves back and giggles when they pull funny faces.

The train slowly starts to move and she looks after them as we leave the train station. When she sits back down, she looks sad and leans against her mom. Scarlett wraps an arm around her and strokes up and down her arm. I'm surprised but also touched when I see tears forming in Rose's eyes.

Scarlett also notices and pulls Rose closer until she sits on her lap, nuzzling her head into her mothers neck. She sobs a little and mumbles something that sounds like she already misses Marla and Bennett and that she had so much fun and wants to come back.

Scar and I share a look, before she tells Rose that we will return and that she will see the twins again.

Rose calms down after a while and a few minutes later, she is asleep. I assume the three of them stayed up longer than we thought and that Rose is still tired from that.

Scarlett and I silently talk about the stay at home and she tells me that she really enjoyed it too and that she loves my family. I smile at her words and lean a little onto the table between us.

"What did my Mom said to you?" I ask, interested in what that was about. Scarlett tilts her head in question.

"When she hugged you goodbye today." I specify and in her eyes I can see understanding and then a little sparkle.

"Nothing." She brushes it off but by the little grin on her face, I can tell it's not nothing.

"Oh, come on, please tell me." I plead but she shakes her head.

"It was nothing important." She keeps up her façade and I narrow my eyes at her.

"I don't believe you." I say and she chuckles a bit before shrugging.

"I also wouldn't if I was you." She admits and her eyes sparkle with a mix between mischief and love.

"So, you admit that she said something?" I conclude but her expression doesn't change.

I throw my hands in the air a little but have a little smile on my face, showing her that I'm not really mad.

"You're lying to your own girlfriend? Where will that lead, Scarlett? Where will that lead?" I ask dramatically and let myself fall back against the seat.

She laughs silently at my antics and I can't help it but to smile wider at that sound, I love her so much.

Since Rose is still asleep when we need to switch trains, Scarlett carries her and I take the suitcases.

At some point during the second train ride, Scar and I are both reading, Rose wakes up and for a few minutes she just cuddles into Scarlett and me since we sat down next to each other.

But then Rose gets hungry, so she gets a snack and after that she is more awake again. To get out at least a bit of energy and because she needed to use the toilet, I take her through the train to find a toilet.

In the doorway, where no people are, we goof around a little but I always take care that she doesn't tremble or fall when the train slows down a bit or gets faster.

After that we walk back to our booth and she sits down and decides she wants to do her puzzle. Scarlett and I switch keeping an eye on Rose and the puzzle pieces so they don't slide off the table. Once again I am impressed, how quick Rose puts the puzzle together.

When her puzzle is done, she wants to read a little bit. She can read a bit but usually prefers when we read something to her but this time she wants to try herself. I sit next to her and watch and help her when she has questions. When she is halfway through the book, she loses motivation and I read the rest to her.

For a long time she draws with her new crayons and Scarlett and I have some quiet time, either reading and getting lost in our minds. The last bit of the train ride, Rose spends watching the landscape fly by.

When we arrive in New York, Scarlett takes Rose's hand while I take the suitcases.

Scar hired her driver to pick us up. A few paparazzi seem to notice us as we leave the train station and I can see Rose tensing up.

I'm surprised that some lower their cameras and apologize before leaving us alone. I look after the women who noticed this is a private moment and left us.

There are still some men, trying to get Scarlett to answer questions about where she was over Christmas.

I walk around her and stand between her and the paparazzi, not wanting her or Rose to stress. Ignoring the comments about me being rude or in the way, I continue until the two blonde's are in the car and with the help of her driver, I put the suitcases in the trunk before getting in myself. Rose seems to be calm again and Scarlett gives me an appreciative smile and when I sit next to her, she rests her head against mine and I feel her relaxing again.

We go home to their house. Rose immediately goes to unpack her backpack with toys and Mr. Mouve, while Scarlett and I take the suitcases upstairs and sort out the clothes before putting them into the washing machine.

In that moment I noticed, that I never did something so casual with Scarlett as sorting out dirty clothes and somehow it makes my heart beat faster.

This could be how living together would be, sorting out dirty clothes and doing things in the household. The thought makes me smile.

The nudge on my shoulder pulls me out of my thoughts and I look at Scarlett, who looks at me with a soft expression.

"What were you thinking about?" She asks and leads me out of the bathroom and down into the living room.

"Just what it would be like to share the daily life with you. You know, doing chores around the house and stuff." I answer and her eyes light up.

"That is a very sweet thought actually." She says and I nod.

We go into the kitchen and check the fridge but there's not a lot in there. I sigh and lean against the counter.

"I want orange juice." I complain lightly and sulk. Scarlett looks at me amused but doesn't judge my whining.

"I would want a sandwich." She says and closes the fridge again.

"Oh yes, that too." I agree and pout even more. She chuckles a bit and stands before me. Her fingers hook through the beltloops and she pulls me closer to her, our noses almost touching, and looks at my lips.

"You look very cute when you pout." She whispers and I have to resists the urge to smile but the corners of my lips twitch a bit in an attempt to lift.

I wrap my arms around her shoulders and try my best to keep the pout on my face. Scarlett's eyes dart from my lips to my eyes and a second later I close mine and she leans in.

Our lips connect softly and dance together as if they never did anything else. My hands hold the back of her neck, pulling her a little closer while her hands pull me flush against her and I gasp a little into the kiss, which makes her smirk.

Her fingers unhook from the front beltloops and slide to my backside, resting just above my butt.

When she pulls away, she leans her forehead against mine and I keep my eyes closed.

"How about we go grocery shopping?" She suggest and I open my eyes.

"God, I love when you talk sexy to me." I tease and she laughs, pulling away a little more. I watch her laugh and my chest warms up, this is what I hope to see for the rest of my life.

"We can sexy talk another time, maybe with no kids in the house because it might lead to more then talking." She replies after her laugh died down and she smirks and gives my butt a little squeeze, making me jump a little.

"Can't keep your hands off me though, mh?" I raise a challenging eyebrow and she smirks, leaning closer to me.

"I could but I don't want to." She whispers into my ear.

I feel a little shiver run through my body at her words and hot breath close to my ear. My brain is erased from any words for a few seconds and I don't know what to answer. Scarlett notices that and kisses my cheek before letting go of me.

Rose comes down the steps and into the kitchen.

"Moms, I'm hungry." She tells us and climbs onto a bar stool. Scarlett turns to her and I also compose myself and go to lean onto the kitchen isle, looking at Rose.

"We are too, sweetheart. How about we go to the store to refill the fridge and after that we'll cook something?" Scarlett suggests and Rose purses her lips before nodding slowly.

"Okay." She agrees and slides of the stool again to put on some shoes. We follow her and Scarlett takes the car keys before we head out.

Luckily, the store isn't too full and while Scarlett looks for an empty parking spot, Rose and I get a shopping cart.

"Too bad I don't really fit in there anymore." Rose says and points to the children's seat. I think for a second.

"True but you fit in the cart." I think out loud and her eyes light up and she grins at me. I return that grin and pick her up, placing her down in the cart. She cheers a little and points to the entry.

"That way." She says in a commanding voice but giggles. I salute.

"Ay, ay Ma'am." I say and laugh a little, pushing her towards the entrance.

We go into the store and I look around.

"What do we need?" I think out loud. Scarlett wrote a list before we headed out but she has it with her, so I have no clue what we need, except one thing.

"Orange juice." I decide and Rose nods. I push her through the aisles towards the one with juice. We stop when we find it and I put two bottles into the cart next to her. She points to another bottle.

"And breakfast juice, Mommy always drinks that." She says and I nod, putting two of those bottles into the cart as well.

"Good thinking." I say and she grins and nods. "Now, what else do we need?"

"Candy, that's always good." Rose says with a cheeky smile but I see nothing wrong with that statement and push her into the right aisle. Her eyes grow big and she looks around.

"Everything looks good." I mumble but Rose heard me and hums in agreement.

She stretches out her hands and I push her closer to the shelfs. She shortly looks at me before taking a bag of gummy bears and adding to the cart.

"Good choice." I agree and point to the package next to it and Rose puts it in the cart as well.

"Now that we have gummy bears, we also need chocolate." She says and I nod agreeingly and reverse to go to the chocolate with her. We discuss if we should take Reese's or M&M's before we decide on both.

"Lets buy some healthy things as well." I suggest but Rose looks offended.

"We got chocolate and gummy bears, we also need something salty." She points out and I facepalm myself, making her giggle a bit.

"You're right, how could I forget that, my mistake." I nod and apologize and bow my head a little.

"You shall be forgiven." Rose laughs and I put my hand to my chest.

"Thank you, you are so generous." I say and join in while going to the aisle with chips and stuff. I can convince Rose to buy my favorite kind of chips and we leave the aisle again.

I look around the aisles a bit and when I don't see any staff or customers, I grin at Rose.

"Wanna go fast?" I ask and Rose's eyes light up and she nods frantically. "Hold on then."

She does so and I look one last time before starting to run with the cart. Rose giggles and I laugh as well, fully enjoying this moment. We drift around a corner and come to a halt.

"Again, again!" Rose cheers but I shake my head, catching my breath a little.

"Here are people and we don't want to be thrown out." I explain and she sighs but nods in understanding. We pass a few more aisles until we get to the vegetables and fruits.

"Now, we need to make it look like we're being healthy during our shopping tour." I explain with a little laugh and Rose grins and nods.

"How about we buy every vegetable and fruit one time?" She suggests and I think about it but before I can answer, someone else does.

"That would make the fridge very full and we still need cheese and stuff for the sandwiches." Scarlett says and I turn around, grinning innocently at her.

"Heyy." I greet her and she chuckles a bit, giving me a quick peck.

"Hey." She answers before looking at Rose and the cart. "I see, you already bought the essentials."

Her tone is amused and Rose nods.

"We bought you your juice." She points it out and Scarlett's eyes soften.

"Well, then I can't say anything against it, can I?" She chuckles and I high-five Rose.

"Nope, you can't." I say, popping the 'p'.

We continue our tour, letting Scarlett take the lead when it comes to the other groceries. Rose and I discuss which type of cheese is better and I see Scarlett putting both kinds into the cart.

Eventually, we make it to the register and we put everything on the belt. I lift Rose out of the cart, so we can put the things easier back in.

As Scarlett pays, Rose and I put the last groceries into the cart and when Scarlett is done, we make our way to the car. We put everything in reusable bags there, before Rose and I bring the cart back, of course with Rose in it.

Once we're not in the parking lot anymore, I spin the cart around and Rose laughs and cheers for me to do it again. I do so two more times before I help her out and bring the cart back. Scarlett pulls up next to us and we get into the car.

Back at home, I help her put everything away before we make sandwiches for everyone and I wonder how the most basic things and activities are so much better just with her by my side.

After the snack, Rose is occupied with her toys and I borrow Scarlett's laptop and settle on the couch, in front of a fire that Scar lit after we got home.

I open the internet and look up the apartments I already looked at once. To some I already sent offers but nothing came back yet but I expected apartment hunting to be more difficult in Manhattan than it was in Brooklyn.

Scarlett sits down next to me and looks at the screen as well. Sometimes she makes noises of approval and sometimes of disapproval, when I look at new apartments. I laugh when she grunts a bit at one and turn my head.

"You okay?" I ask and she purses her lips.

"I don't like that apartment." She says and points at the screen. I look back at it, it looks comfortable and has about the right size.

"Why not?" I ask and she sighs a little before hiding her face in my shoulder. I raise one hand and wave it through her hair.

"It's too far away from here." She mumbles and I suppress a chuckle and look back where it is. It is a bit further away than the others but it's still close enough to my new workplace.

"But right now I live even further away." I point out and kiss her temple when she turns her head a bit to lean it against my shoulder.

"I know." She says and pouts a bit. "And I don't like that. It takes so long for you to get here and you can't stay over when you had work."

I kiss her temple again and bop her nose, making her scrunch it up adorably.

"You want me to be able to stay over when I have work the next day?" I ask and she looks at me, almost as if I offended her.

"Of course, I do." She says and raises her eyebrows at me. I hold up my hands in defense and laugh.

"Okay, I will try to get something closer." I say and she nods satisfied.

"Thank you." She mumbles and rests her head back against my shoulder.

We look through some more apartments and I apply for some more before I close the laptop and put it onto the coffee table. Scarlett leans back and following an impulse, I scoot a bit until I can lay my head in her lap and look up at her. She smiles down at me and starts to play with my hair.

"One thing we didn't think about, is that you won't be here when I'm in my new apartment." I say and feel a bit of sadness inside me. She slowly nods but doesn't stop to play with my hair.

"That's true but I won't be in LA forever, only three months." She says and I sigh.

"That is so long." I whine slightly and she leans down to kiss my forehead.

"It seems long, I know, but it'll go by faster than you think." She tries to cheer me up.
