《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 58: Train and family meeting

Pov y/n

The rattling of the train is even as I walk back to my seat. I smile at the sight, Rose has her action figures out and holds two in her hands, Scarlett holding two other ones as they play something.

"You shouldn't have done that." Rose says and wiggles around her Black Widow figure. "Now you will pay."

She starts to attack one of the figures in Scarlett's hands and Scarlett fights back the best she can. It's chaotic and I can't even say who is beating who up at this point but they both seem to have fun and that's all that matters.

I sit down opposite of Rose and she quickly smiles at me before going back to playing. While leaning back, I am happy to be in the train with Scar and Rose, especially after the morning was a bit stressful.

We already had most of the stuff packed and were ready to go.

I stayed over, so we could drive to the train station together and their apartment is also closer. But after breakfast, Rose suddenly came running to Scar and I while we packed the last few things, her eyes red and a bit puffy, tears falling down her face.

Both, Scarlett's and mine attention immediately went to Rose, who sobbed and hugged her mom. We tried to understand what's the matter but Rose wasn't able to tell us between sobs.

Once we calmed her down, she wiped her eyes and told us her favorite stuffed animal, Mr. Mouve, is missing and that she can't go without it.

A bit of relief washed over me because I was worried it was something bigger, not that this wasn't big for her.

We helped her search her room for quite a while, until we found it, in Rose's backpack where she put him last night so she wouldn't forget him at home.

Due to that and the driver taking a bit longer, we were running late and almost missed our train. The train station was very full since a lot of people probably wanted to go somewhere for Christmas.

We were able to fit everything into two suitcases, also because I still have some things back at home, so I didn't need as much as the other two.

Rose also has a backpack with her toys and things to entertain her during the train ride. Scarlett has a bag as well, where all our important things like money and phones are in, as well as books to entertain us.

Luckily, we booked seats along with the tickets, so we for sure would have somewhere to sit. I don't even want to imagine what it would be like to have to stand or sit in the corridors.

But now it's all calm and Scar and Rose seem relaxed.

I rest my head against my seat and look out of the window, I'm excited to go back home. It only has been almost five months since I left but still, I miss my family and the calmness of a town.

New York is great and all but it's always so busy and rushed.

My Mom already texted me that she took care of the sleeping arrangement and can't wait to meet Scarlett and Rose.

I am also looking forward to that because this is my first relationship in quite a long time and the last time I introduced a girlfriend to my parents, Dad was still alive and I was a teenager, now I am an adult.

Scarlett seems to be relaxed about the whole 'meeting the family' thing, I mean, I already know my Mom and siblings will love her, no doubt.

My brother might freak out a little since he is a Marvel fan and, of course, knows who Scarlett Johansson is.

So far, he played it cool but I have a feeling that might change, when he meets her in real life.

Rose also seems to be calm about it. She was only worried that Santa might not find her, since she's not in New York but I assured her, that he found our town every year and will find her too. That seemed to have eased her.

I know, Scar taught her a bit more about Hanukkah over the past few days and Rose seemed to understand it but for now we keep the whole Santa act up.

She didn't seem to have any problems with meeting my family, which sounds logical since I know that she likes to meet new people and isn't shy.

Mom said to bring snow clothes because it may snow in the next couple of days and I hope she's right, I always loved our town in winter when it was snowy.

I also hope the lake is frozen, so we can go ice skating, well not really skating since Scar and Rose don't have skates but maybe walk on the lake.

I'm brought back to the real world, when Scar nudges my foot under the table and I look at her.

"Where were you with your thought?" She asks with soft eyes.

"Back home." I reply and she smiles at me. Rose listens to us talk while watching out the window.

Their superhero fight seems to be over. Scarlett leans forward and reaches out a hand. I place mine in hers and she squeezes it a little.

"Anything specific?" She asks further, still soft and not pushy in any way. I hum and recall my thoughts.

"Not in particular, just about the weather and my family and how they'll react to meeting you." I share and she nods before raising our hands up to her mouth and kissing the back of mine, making butterflies fly around my stomach.

"Are you nervous about it?" She asks and puts our hands back onto the table between us. I think about her question and listen to my inner self before I shake my head.

"No, not really." I answer honestly. "I know my family is excited to meet you and you also seem to be happy too, so I think it'll go just fine."

Scar nods and shortly looks at Rose before looking back at me.

"I think so too. All the things you told me about your family sound very nice, sweet and kind, so I'm not worried about that. And I will present myself from my best side." She chuckles a little and I smile as well.

"You're always great, bug." I say softly and her eyes light up at the compliment and she squeezes my hand again.

"Mama?" Rose asks and turns her attention to us. I look at her and nod.

"What do I call your mom?" She asks and I purse my lips in thought.

"Well, you don't really know her yet, so how about her name?" I suggest and Rose thinks about my offer.

"Okay, yeah." She agrees slowly and Scar smile and ruffles her hair a little. Rose still looks thoughtful.

"And your dad?" She asks and I see Scarlett freeze a little, her eyes darting to me.

I knew this question would come up sooner or later and prepared myself for it. I take a deep breath and feel Scarlett's hand tighten a little and her thumb starts to rub the back of my hand.

"My dad is in heaven." I explain to Rose. She looks at me a few seconds, processing.

"So, he is an angel now?" She asks and I smile a little and nod.

"Yes, he is." I agree and look to Scar who seems to relax a little.

"Was he a good dad?" Rose continues her question and I chuckle a little as memories come to my mind.

"He was the best. He would play with me after work and goof around until it was time for bed. And when I was five, he even built me a treehouse. Sadly, we had to leave it when we moved but he did a great job." I tell her and think back, smiling at the memory.

There's only a little stinging in my chest when I think of him, there are more happy memories that overshadow the pain right now and it feels good to not to want to break into tears at the very thought of him.

"Treehouses are so cool!" Rose sighs and slumps a little into her seat. "I wish I had a treehouse."

I look to Scarlett and tilt my head a little sidewards. Her hold on my hand loosens again as she notices that I am okay and she looks from Rose to me, shrugging a bit.

"A treehouse needs a strong tree to be build into." I explain and Rose scrunches up her nose a little.

"We have a few trees in our garden." She points out and I chuckle a bit and nod. "Do you think any of them could be used for a treehouse?"

I think about that and suck in my lip in thought.

"I don't remember exactly how your trees look and it'd be smart to take a close look before building but I think so." I slowly agree and Rose's eyes start to sparkle and she sits back up, bouncing a bit in her seat.

"Can I please get a treehouse?" She begs and looks from Scarlett to me and back. Scar looks a little clueless and looks at me for help.

"I mean sure but I don't know how to build a treehouse though." She says and shrugs apologetically. Rose's eyes stay on me, almost pleadingly. Scar also looks at me.

"I think I could do it." I slowly say.

"I've never done it but I know how to work with wood and stuff and I'll probably find instructions on the internet."

Rose cheers excitedly and it almost looks like she wants to climb over the desk to hug me but Scar holds he back.

"Yes! That would be so cool!" She exclaims and I smile at her excitement, mentally making a note to start that project when we're back home.

The train ride goes by calmly, Rose is occupied either looking outside the window or playing with some toys or drawing something. Since it's winter, she decided to draw snowmen and snowwomen. For a while she comes to sit on my lap and I read a few books to her while she looks at the pictures.

Scarlett does her hair, when Rose decides she wants braids and we have a snack.

We switch trains and I take care of the luggage while Scar carries Rose, so she won't get lost. The train station is not very big but there are quite some people and we need to hurry up a bit to catch the next train that brings us to my home town.

Rose gets a little tired but doesn't want to sleep yet, so she just looks out the window and leans against her mom. Her eyes flutter close a few times until she falls asleep. We let her sleep for half an hour because then we have to get out.

Scarlett gently wakes Rose, who is a little confused at first but follows us out of the train.

Excitement rushes through my body when I see the name of my home town on the signs outside.

Suddenly I can't wait to see my family and to get home. I spoke to my Mom and she said either she or one of the twins will come and pick us up with the car.

We step out of the train and it's almost as if the air here smells homier.

My eyes look around, searching for a familiar face. Scarlett looks around as well, taking in what she sees. Rose still seems a bit sleepy but wakes up more and more by the second.

When I see a familiar face, a squeal is heard as they see me too and I put down the suitcases to prepare myself for the hug.

My sister almost crashes into me but I balance it out and hug her back. When she lets go of me, her smile is wide and she looks excited.

"You made it!" She cheers and I smile at how happy she is to see me.

"Of course, I did." I say and nudge her shoulder a little. "Seems like you missed me."

She huffs a little and rolls her eyes but the smile on her face tells me she doesn't mean it.

"Maybe this much." She says and holds up her hand, showing a tiny space between her thumb and index finger. I chuckle and pull her into another hug.

"Good to see you again." I whisper into her ear and when I pull away, she smiles even wider.

"I mean, I had to come and pick you up, after all, I'm still your favorite sibling." She grins and I swat her arm.

"You know I love you both equally but thank you. And speaking of picking us up." I turn around and walk over to Rose and Scarlett, my sister following me.

"This are Scarlett and Rose." I introduce them and Marla's eyes light up when she eyes them.

Rose lets go of Scarlett's hand and takes a step closer to Marla, looking up at her with a cute smile.

"You're Mama's sister?" She asks and Marla's eye dart to me for a second at the name but she concentrates back on Rose and nods.

"Yes I am, you must be Rose." She greets her and Rose nods happily.

"Can I hug you." Rose asks and I see Marla's expression soften and she nods before crouching down.

"Of course, Rose." She answers and Rose hugs her. Marla looks up at me during the hug and I can read in her eyes, that she already adores Rose.

"You give good hugs." Rose decides with a cheeky smile after letting go of Marla, whose eyes sparkle at the compliment.

"Thank you, yours was good as well." She returns the compliment and Rose proudly grins at Scarlett and me before coming to my side and taking my hand. Marla's attention shifts to Scarlett now and she smiles kindly.

"Nice to finally meet you, after everything y/n told me about you." She says lightly and smiles. Scarlett returns that smile.

"I hope it was only good things. I'm also happy to meet you, she mentioned you a few times." Scar answers and Marla laughs a bit.

"Don't worry, she was only swarming about you. Which she probably didn't do about me."

Scarlett joins in and laughs at well.

"Well, she told me about when she was still a kid." She tells Marla and Marla nods, smirking a bit.

"The story about wanting to return me or ship me away?" She asks and glances over at me with a teasing smile.

"Both, actually." Scar tells her and Marla grins.

"Then you know what you got yourself into." She grins and Scarlett laughs.

"I do." She agrees and I pretend to be offended.

"I heard that." I say and while Marla rolls her eyes at me, Scarlett sends me an air kiss but smirks as well.

"Already formed an alliance against me." I mutter and fake pout.

"That's how it is, sis." Marla agrees and both her and Scarlett laugh. I can't help it but to smile as well, they already seem to get along great, which makes me purely happy.

"What is an alliance?" Rose asks me and tugs on my hand a little. I look down at her.

"It's when a few people form a group, mostly it's because they are of the same opinion on something or someone." I explain and Rose nods, taking in the new information before turning to her mother and my sister.

"I wanna be in an alliance too." She says and Marla smirks at me while Scarlett grins and holds out her hand for Rose. The girl walks over and I cross my arms and huff, shaking my head a little.

"Betrayal." I say, making the other's laugh and Rose giggles.

"I still love you." She says and my heart softens.

"I love you too, little dolphin." I return and she smiles happily.

"As nice as this is, maybe we should get the suitcases into the car because it's not getting warmer." Marla says and nods towards the exit of the train station.

I agree with her and take the suitcases while Scarlett guides Rose. They follow Marla and me outside and to the car. Memories come up when I see the car and I smile to myself. This was the car in which I got taught how to drive and in which I... never mind.

I notice there's already a seat for Rose and smile, probably my Mom's doing. Scarlett notices it as well and smiles. We load the luggage into the trunk and get into the car. Scarlett and Rose sit in the backseat while Marla drives and I sit in the passenger's seat.

During the car ride, Marla asks about the train ride and Rose starts telling her what we did and how we changed trains. They have their own conversation about it and it just makes me happy that they get along.

When we get into our drive way, I get excited again, this time to see my brother and my Mom.

We unpack and Marla takes one suitcase to help us out. Before we reach the front door, it opens and my brother comes outside, shooting Marla a short glare before hugging me. I hug him back.

"I wanted to pick you guys up but she snatched the keys first and hurried outside." He tells me after letting go. Marla shrugs with a smug smile.

"It's not my fault you're slow." She teases and receives another glare. Bennet ignores her words otherwise and looks at me. He's a bit taller than me, even though I'm older.

"You look happy." He observes with a soft smile and I nod.

"That's because I am." I agree and he hugs me again, mumbling into my ear that he is happy to hear that. Then he turns to Scarlett and Rose. This time, Rose is quicker than me and steps towards him.

"I'm Rose." She introduces herself and Bennet crouches down before he introduces himself.

"Hi Rose, I'm Bennet but you can also call me Ben if you like to." He says and Rose grins and nods.

"Do you give good hugs like your sister?" She asks and I catch Marla proudly straightening her posture.

"I don't know. Wanna find out?" He offers and Rose nods and they hug.

My heart once again softens at their sweet interaction. When Rose pulls away, she seems a bit thoughtful.

"They are good but I don't know if they were better than Marla's." She tells him and Ben laughs a bit before puffing his chest.

"I can do better, wanna try again?" He asks and Rose beams at him and nods before he wraps his arms around her. This time, Rose nods when they pull away.

"They are better." She decides and Marla deflates a little as if someone took some important title from her. Bennett grins at her before getting up and turning to Scarlett.

"Hey, I'm Bennet, or Ben." He introduced himself.

"I'm Scarlett, nice to meet you." She says kindly.

"You too, even though y/n kept you a secret for quite a while but I'm happy we get to know you now." He says with a charming smile and Scar chuckles a bit. I throw my hands into the air.

"Sure, lets all be against me today." I murmur and pretend to be sulking.

"Yep, that's what happens when you don't care to tell us you got a girlfriend." Ben teases and I narrow my eyes at him.

"Careful, Benny, or I'll ship you away and this time for real." I playfully warn him but it only makes him laugh.

"I'm too big for a carton by now but nice try." He shoots back and I see Scarlett smirking behind him.

"Alright, I'm gonna look for the woman who won't turn on her daughter." I say and playfully glare at them, making them all grin. Rose comes running to my side and takes my hand.

"You can join the alliance too, if you want." She offers innocently and I smile softly at her.

"Thank you, sweetie, that is very kind of you." I say and she beams up at me.

Marla and Bennet each take a suitcase and Scarlett follows me and Rose inside. As soon as the front door closes, I hear some rattling from the kitchen and a few seconds later, my mother appears in the hallway, opening her arms when she sees me.

Since Rose doesn't seem to mind and also doesn't let go of my hand, I walk up to my Mom with her and hug her with one arm. She hugs me back and one of her hands rubs over my back and when I pull away, after quite a while, she kisses my forehead.

"It's so good to see you again, honey." She says before her attention shifts to Rose, who tugs on my hand a little and I look down to her and when she holds up both hands, I pick her up. She smiles and looks at my Mom.

"You must be Rose." My Mom concludes and Rose nods happily.

"I am." She confirms and my mother smiles.

"I am very happy to have you here and greet you in our home." She says and Rose beams at her. I hear a bit of shuffling behind me and a second later, Scarlett stands next to me.

"Hi, I'm Scarlett." She introduces herself and even though she might seem calm, I can tell she is a bit nervous about this. My Mom turns her attention to my girlfriend.

"I'm Andrea, but you can call my Andy." She says warmly and also looks as Rose, introducing herself to the both of them.

"It's a pleasure to welcome you here after everything y/n told me about you two." She says and I can feel my face heating up a bit.
