《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 53: Cookies and skates

As expected, there were articles about us the next few days, underlined with the pictures the paparazzi took.

I didn't read them, Scarlett just told me about them because she got a call from her management. Those articles don't say anything bad, they're just speculating how Scar's and my relationship is going.

Luckily, Rose's face isn't seen in any of those pictures.

We don't know if it's because she hid her face and I put my hand in front of it or because there were none taken when she could be seen.

It doesn't really matter though because all that matters is that her face isn't posted in the media.

After we arrived home, I carried her inside and we just had a calm rest of the day where we cuddled on the couch and played some games with Rose.

Before we brought her to bed, we talked about what happened and that it's okay that she felt scared and overwhelmed and that we will do our best to protect her from reporters and paparazzi.

Scarlett thanked me for taking care of Rose and comforting her when she needed it. We said goodnight after that and I went to go back home since I had work the next day.

The thought of paparazzi and reporters didn't leave my mind the next few days and the longer I thought about it, the more it annoyed me that those people ignore the privacy of celebrities and their families.

It makes me worry about Rose and I texted Scarlett a few times if Rose was okay and she was.

Scarlett said it's not the first time, Rose had to go through that and that she just needed a bit time to calm down and that it's as good as forgotten now.

It's not just the flashing lights and the many people for her, it's also the element of surprise that scares her. Apparently, Rose doesn't mind to go to smaller events with her mother, where also a lot of photographs are.

But during those events, Rose isn't the main focus and when Scarlett walks over the carpet to take pictures, Rose was always with someone who watched her.

I still feel angry towards those paparazzi last Sunday because they scared the little nugget and I could tell that if we were around them just a bit longer, Rose would have started to cry and I don't like that at all.

Scarlett calmed me down a little when we talked over the phone and when she came in on Wednesday and told me that it makes her angry as well but we can't change it now and only try our best to protect Rose if it happens again, I let it go as good as possible.

That was during the week, now it's Saturday and we have a nice day together planned.

Scarlett and I are still in bed, half asleep as she cuddles into me, kissing my neck every once in a while.

My arm is wrapped around her and I stroke her back.

It's a very calm moment that we both enjoy a lot until we can hear footsteps in the floor and shortly after, the bedroom door is being opened and Rose comes to jump onto the bed.

It doesn't seem to bother her at all that Scarlett and I sleep in the same bed, the first time she noticed it, she just nodded and accepted it.

A bit air is pressed out of my lungs when she flops down onto Scarlett and me and I see Scarlett now fully waking up. She pulls her arm from under Rose, that was hugging my middle and wraps it around her daughter, so she won't fall off.

"Good morning, sunshine." I say and Rose beams at me.

"Good morning, Mama." She says back and sits up on my stomach.

My hands come to a rest on her hips to keep her in place and Scarlett lets go of her and stretches a little before sitting up against the headboard. She ruffles Rose's hair.

"How did you sleep, sweetheart?" She asks and Rose looks at her with a wide smile.

"Super good and I had a dream where gnomes were running around the city and stealing Christmas trees. But me and some other plants came to their rescue and we fought off the gnomes and put them in a magical prison." Rose tells us and I raise my eyebrows at her crazy dream. Scar laughs a little.

"Sounds like you did a great job, Rosie." She says and Rose nods proudly.

"We saved Christmas." She agrees and bounces a little on my stomach.

I make a little sound and Scar looks at me amused, not feeling the need to help me in any way. I make a grimace at her, which makes her chuckle.

"Did you dream anything, Mommy?" Rose asks and stops her bouncing, which I appreciate.

I carefully sit up as well and hold Rose securely while she slides into my lap in that process.

"Not that I can remember, no." She answers and plays with a strain of Rose's hair. The girl looks at me but I shake my head as well and she hums.

"So, I was the only one who was productive at night? Saving the whole city?" She asks with a cheeky smile and Scarlett pretends to be offended.

"I saved the city as well, I have multiple movies to prove it." She says and leans closer to rub her nose against Rose's, making her giggle.

"But that wasn't real." She explains while giggling and Scarlett scoffs lightly with a grin and lifts Rose off me to carefully throw her onto the bed before tickling her. Rose squeals and squirms and I just smile at the scene in front of me, I could have this kind of morning every day.

"Help me, Mama." Rose giggles and tries to wiggle out of her mother's hands. I hold mine up in surrender.

"I'm not picking any sides here." I say and Scar stops to tickle Rose and they switch a look before Rose jumps onto me again and starts to tickle me.

I laugh and when Scar helps Rose, I start to squirm around but they don't care and mercilessly tickle me further.

Rose giggles as well, making my heart warm up.

When I start to gasp a little at the lack of air, Scar lets go of me and so does Rose, both smirking in the same way and the resemblance is almost scary.

"Alright, I give up." I pant a little and Rose raises a fist in victory. "Next time I'll pick a side."

"It'll better be mine." Scar smirks and I give her a short glance, smiling at her.

"No, mine! I will draw you something if you are on my side." Rose interjects and I look at her.

"That is tempting." I admit and she smiles proudly, sticking out her tongue at her mom. Scarlett just rolls her eyes before pressing a kiss to Rose's cheek.

"How about we get ready for the day, we have a lot planned." Scar suggests and as if she just remembered, Rose nods frantically and cheers.

She slides off of me and the bed before running into her room to get ready. I look after her and when I hear her door fall shut, I turn around to Scarlett.

"So, you didn't dream anything last night, mh?" I ask with a smirk and she raises her eyebrows in confusion.

"So, the sounds you made were totally unrelated to that?" I ask further and trail a finger up her arm. Slight goosebumps appear on her skin and she slowly seems to understand.

"You mean like..." She trails of and keeps eye contact with me.

I nod and lean closer to her and when my breath hits her ear, she shudders a little.

I moan silently but loud enough for her to hear it when I pull away, I see her eyes widen and a faint blush paints her cheeks. I smirk and gently tilt her head backwards with my finger before kissing her neck. A little sigh leaves her mouth and I pull away again, another smirk on my lips.

"Too bad you don't seem to remember, or otherwise we could have recreated it this night." I whisper and watch her bite her lip.

"I really don't." She says a little breathlessly and I grin at the effect I have on her.

Her pupils are slightly blown and I can tell that this doesn't leave her untouched. I just shrug and turn to get up but she holds me back.

"What exactly..." She starts but blushes before finishing her sentence and it makes me smirk even wider.

"Did I say something as well?" She rephrases her sentence but I shake my head, starting to laugh. Her expression is beyond confused, making this even funnier.

"Babe, you didn't say anything, nor did you make any noises, I just made that up to tease you." I laugh and her face falters a little before a tiny grin curls on her lips.

"Revenge for the tickle-attack." I say and kiss her cheek before getting up to get ready.

"I hate you sometimes." She mutters but doesn't mean it. I smile brightly at her.

"I love you too." I reply, making her smile.

Around ten minutes later, we are all in the kitchen dressed and ready to have breakfast.

We decide on something easy and I watch as Scarlett makes us some porridge while Rose steals a piece of the apples I cut.

I glare at her playfully and she just grins at me before leaving the kitchen and going to play with some toys while we wait for the food.

Once it's ready, I set the table while Scar fills the porridge into bowls. Rose comes to sit down at the table and we have breakfast together. Even though I had breakfast with them so many times, I realize once again how natural this feels as if we are a family. Well, somehow, we are I suppose but it feels like this is how it's supposed to be. The thought makes me smile and I listen to Rose tell us about what her teacher said yesterday in school.

When we're all done, we get up and Scarlett and I put the bowls into the dishwasher while Rose bounces around the kitchen, excited for the next activity. We decided to bake cookies today and ever since we made that plan, Rose has been excited for that.

Baking with a child may be more chaotic but seeing her all happy about it makes it worth it.

Scarlett gets the receipt while Rose gets a stool to stand on, so she can help us. I get out the ingredients we will definitely use and place them on the kitchen isle before getting the measuring cups.

Rose comes back and puts her stool down and stands on it, proudly smiling when she can reach the aisle to help us. We already washed our hands, so I get a bowl out as Scar comes back into the kitchen.

She displays the book and I take a look and nod. We will bake two kind of cookies today, chocolate cookies and vanilla cookies that we will decorate later.

Starting of with the vanilla cookies, Scarlett reads out the instructions while Rose and I follow them along. Rose is very careful when adding ingredients to the mixture and I am honestly surprised how clean everything stays.

From experience I know, that baking with my siblings, especially when they were younger, would always end in a messy kitchen and messy children. But Rose seems to be more careful and only a few things spill but that's normal.

We put the dough into the fridge so it is cool when we cut out the shapes later on. Scarlett and I change a look and I can tell she is surprised and proud that it's not a mess yet.

Rose leans onto her elbows and looks at the receipt.

"What now, Mommy?" She asks and decides she doesn't want to read right now. Scar chuckles at that a little and ruffles her daughter's hair.

"Chocolate cookies?" She suggests and Rose claps excitedly.

While her and Rose mix the dry ingredients, I melt the chocolate and when I put it onto the counter, Rose's eyes grow big and she looks at the melted chocolate.

"Careful, it is still hot." I say before she can put her finger into it and she pouts a little.

"Good thing I saved a piece." I add and give her a piece of chocolate that she puts into her mouth with a big smile. She hugs me shortly.

"Thank you." She mumbles and when she looks at her mom, she smiles innocently, making her chuckle.

Scarlett adds the chocolate to the rest and mixes it together. Rose watches her and when Scarlett goes to get a baking tray, Rose dips her finger into the batter and puts it into her mouth, her eyes staying on her mom.

"Did you just steal some batter?" I ask silently and her head whips around to me with a little grin but she shakes her head. I raise my eyebrows playfully.

"I think you did. You better be careful or the batter police will come to arrest you." I tell her and she giggles.

"You're goofy." She says and her eyes shine with delight.

"No, I am serious." I say and lower my voice to a whisper, leaning down to be Rose's height.

"When you steal too much batter, they will silently and slowly sneak up on you and when they reach you, they will..." I make a dramatic pause and see Rose intently listening to me, which makes me smirk internally. My hands slowly sneaking around her body.

"Tickle you." I say and dig my fingers into her sides, making her squeal and laugh, wiggling around.

I let go of her after a few seconds and she looks up at me with slightly rosy cheeks. She grins and slowly reaches out for the bowl again. I look at her with big eyes and when she dips her finger in before putting it into her mouth, I gasp and slowly reach out for her.

But before I can get her, she hops off her stool and runs away. With a laugh I chase after her and she giggles when she notices.

We run around the living room a few times before I grab her and lift her up, spinning around. She laughs and it makes my heart melt. I lift her up higher and sit her down on my shoulders, my arms wrapping around her legs as she holds onto my head.

"Now you're in batter jail, you can't reach it anymore." I explain and look up at her.

She pulls a funny face that I return before walking back into the kitchen with her, always careful she won't fall. Scarlett laughs at our antics and shakes her head as she continues to put the batter onto the tray.

"Look, I'm taller than you, Mommy." Rose says proudly and Scarlett looks up at her.

"I can see that, sweetheart. How does it feel?" She asks and glances down at me with a smile that I easily return.

"It's great! Now I can see much more but I can't reach the bowl anymore." Rose tells her and crosses her arms on my head but Scarlett's chuckle tells me that Rose isn't really mad.

"Well, the batter police did her job right then." She says and Rose hums but seems to smile.

Since I want to keep Rose save, I don't let go of her and we both just watch Scarlett putting the dough onto the tray. Then Rose gasps and taps my head in excitement.

"This is like in Ratatouille, where the mouse navigates the man through his hair." Rose tells us and I laugh at the comparison.

"That's true but please don't try it out because pulling on my hair won't do anything except maybe hurt." I say and Rose agrees and seconds later I feel her kiss the top of my head, making my heart a puddle.

Once the first batch of cookies is in the oven, I set Rose down, so she can help cut out the vanilla cookies. I put flour onto the countertop, so the dough won't stick to it and tell Rose to hold out her hands, so I can put flour on them as well.

Scar mirrors Rose's action and I put some flour on her hands as well.

We roll out the dough and I give Rose the cookie cutters to press them into it.

I watch her for a few seconds before I take some of the cookie cutters myself and make little snowmen. After we made some, I sneak some of the dough myself and put it into my mouth. Rose sees it and grins, doing the same.

"What about the batter police?" She asks with a smug smile and I wave it off.

"Their shift is over. But we still shouldn't eat too much because it becomes unhealthy then." I say in a more serious voice and Rose nods, accepting that.

We steal a bit more of the dough before we let it be and I hear Scarlett chuckling. She's responsible for the oven and gets the chocolate cookies out and puts the first tray of vanilla cookies in.

She pours some flour into her hand to help us further, at least that's what I thought but when she leans over, she makes a flour dot onto my nose and I look at her in surprise. Rose watches our interaction with a giggle.

"What was that for?" I ask with a little grin and Scar shrugs.

"I don't know but it looks good on you." She says and kisses my cheek with a little smirk.

I shake my head and get some flour myself, drawing lines onto her cheeks. She laughs at that but accepts it.

Rose giggles even more and looks from her mom to me.

Scar and I share a short look before we dip our fingers into the flour and she makes a dot on Rose's nose and I draw stripes onto her cheeks.

The little girl scrunches her nose and tries to see it but she can't and huffs, making us smile. Then Rose dips her finger into the flour and I almost expect her to make a mess since we started it but she simply draws stripes onto my cheeks and makes a dot on her mom's nose. Happy with the result she smiles.

"Now we are a family." She says happily and returns to cutting out cookies. My eyes dart to Scarlett's and she looks at me as well, a soft expression in her eyes and without needing to say anything, I know what she thinks and I lean over to give her a sweet kiss. She returns it and when we pull away, her eyes sparkle with happiness.

The rest of the cookies is done soon and we let them cool off.

Because Rose and I already ate some of the batter, we don't need to try the cookies right away, at which Scarlett grins. We wash off the flour from our faces and take a little break before we get ready for the next activity: ice skating.

Scar insisted on taking me to Rockefeller Center to go ice skating and since I told her I'd love to come back to see it with Christmas decorations, I didn't have anything against that plan.

We take the car because after last week, we don't need to run into a bunch of paparazzi when we get onto or off the subway.

It's gotten colder outside and I pull the scarf tighter around my neck as we're walking from the car to our destination. Rose is excited and walks a few steps ahead of us while we hold hands and keep an eye on her so she won't get lost.

I look up at the streets and am already amazed by the many decorations and lights.

Back at home we also decorated our house and so did the neighbors but compared to this, it was nothing.

It's not dark yet, so the lights aren't on but I can imagine what it'll look like and maybe I get to see it later today.

It's probably gonna start to get darker in around two hours or so, so the chances are good.

When it gets more crowded, Rose stops and waits for us to catch up, so she can take her mom's hand.

We arrive at Rockefeller Center and I am impressed and marvel at all the decorations and the giant Christmas tree they put up. I look up and slowly spin around to see everything.

When I look back to Scarlett, she grins happily at me and her eyes sparkle at my impressed state.

"Isn't it beautiful?" She asks and I nod while letting my eyes look over everything.

"It really is, you didn't understate it." I agree and her eyes light up even more.

"Can we go ice skating now?" Rose asks and tugs on Scar's hand.

I nod and follow their lead down the stairs where we have to stand in a queue to rent our skates and pay to enter the ring.

From here it almost looks even more amazing and the tree even bigger. A warm Christmas mood settles inside me and I smile, happy to be here and to share this moment with my girlfriend and her daughter.

Rose suddenly gets big eyes.

"There's Santa." She whisper shouts and points to man dressed up in a Santa costume.
