《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 49: Thanksgiving and jealousy

Pov y/n

The next day I wake up in a great mood, excited to spend my day with Rose, Scarlett and some of her friends. Even though it has only been two day, I already miss her and Rose and can't wait to see them again. Somehow they always make my day better, no matter how long I see them or what we do.

My thoughts are interrupted when Flo stretches next to me and I look at her with a smile. She returns it and yawns.

"Happy Thanksgiving." She mumbles and fully opens her eyes now.

"Happy Thanksgiving." I reply and after a few more seconds, I get up to get dressed. Since we're not doing anything fancy, I decided on a simple hoodie and jeans.

I prepare breakfast while Flo is in the shower and she thanks me when she comes back. She also decided on some simple clothes and we eat our breakfast while talking about the upcoming day.

We're both getting more and more excited and when we both seem to almost explode, we decide to just go to Scarlett's now. I send her a quick text, to let her know where on our way and she sends back a thumbs up.

Not long after, we arrive and I smile when I see that the birthday crown drawing on the front gate is replaced by a turkey drawing. Rose really did her best to help decorate as it seems.

We are buzzed in and are greeted by a Rose who bolts towards us to stand behind us and use us as a shield. I look at her confused before I see Lizzie running towards us, clearly chasing after Rose.

Lizzie greets Flo and me quickly before trying to reach behind us to get to Rose.

The girl squeals and hides further behind Flo and me. When Flo gives up being a shield, to get out of her shoes, Rose stands behind me.

She giggles, watching Lizzie's attempt to get her. I hold my hands behind my back to protect Rose, making Lizzie playfully glare at me.

"Truce, I need to get out of my shoes." I offer and hold up my hands. Lizzie thinks about it for a few seconds before nodding and I slowly bend down to get out of my shoes. When Lizzie is distracted by something Flo says, I take Rose's hand and we run into the living room.

"Hey, unfair!" Lizzie exclaims and chases us. Rose and I giggle, running around the couch to escape Lizzie. When she comes to a halt, we do the same and grin at her.

"You don't even know what she did." Lizzie points out with a laugh and nods towards Rose who grins up at me.

"I don't have to, I'll always have her back." I easily reply and Rose's grin becomes even wider at my words. Lizzie huffs a little but smiles.

"She stole cake frosting, three times." She lets me know and Rose giggles. I look down at her.

"Three times?" I ask and for a second Rose seems unsure about my reaction.

"Without getting caught?" I ask proudly and Rose beams up at me when I high five her for that. Lizzie shakes her head disapprovingly but chuckling.

"Partners in crime then?" She asks and gestures between us and I nod.

"Always." I answer and Rose cheers at my words. Lizzie narrows her eyes and slowly nods while seeming to think about something.

"Well, two criminals need two officers." She mumbles and looks around. I don't take my eyes off her, wanting to be ready in case she starts running again. Rose bounces up and down next to me, having way too much fun with this game.

I take her hand to be ready and when Lizzie starts to round the couch, Rose and I run into the other direction. For a second I am irritated by the smirk on Lizzie's face but when a pair of arms wraps around my body, I understand why.

"We've been compromised, run, Rosie!" I yell and Rose squeals and chases away, Lizzie after her.

I look after them before turning around to look into beautiful green eyes and I immediately melt.

"Hey, my little criminal." Scarlett greets me with a playful grin. I scoff a little in pretend to be offended but smile right after.

"Hey, babe." I reply and wrap my arms around her as well.

"So you're a criminal now?" She asks with a delighted sparkle in her eyes. I hum and nod.

"Looks like it." I agree and she chuckles silently.

"Hmm, not that you're gonna get in trouble or arrested." She says silently, her eyes darting from my eyes to my lips and she pulls me a little closer.

"You want to handcuff me?" I whisper with a teasing smirk and her whole face turns red for a few seconds and she hides her face in my neck.

"Is that a 'no'?" I ask as silent as before and when she lifts her face out of my neck, I see something sparkle in them that wasn't there before.

"Happy Thanksgiving, angel." She says, changing the topic, making me raise an eyebrow which she just response to with a tiny smirk. Heat travels down my body and I unintentionally press my legs together.

"Happy Thanksgiving, love bug." I reply and lean forward to connect our lips in a sweet kiss.

Well, it starts sweet but when she starts to suck on my bottom lip and grazing her teeth over it, it turns a bit more heated. Someone clearing their throat makes us pull away and we look at a smirking Flo, leaning against the back of the couch.

"Get a room if you want to continue this or at least don't do it somewhere where your kid could walk in." She grins and wiggles her eyebrows.

I roll my eyes at her and see Scarlett shooting her a glare as well, making her chuckle.

Before I can say anything else, Scarlett's soft touch turns my head back to look at her and she kisses me again. Still sweet but a bit more passion in it now and her hands slowly travel down to rest on my butt. I make a silent, surprised noise that only she can catch, making her smirk before letting go of my lips.

One of her arms stays around my waist as she turns around to Florence, smiling innocently as if she didn't just eat my face.

Flo chuckles and shakes her head at us but before she can say something, Rose comes running back into the living room, closely followed by Lizzie who grabs her and pulls her with her onto the couch. Lizzie starts tickling Rose, making her laugh and kick around.

The sight is adorable and my heart melts. I lean my head against Scarlett's watching them goof around. When Rose begs Lizzie to stop, completely out of breath, Lizzie lets go of her and Rose's laughter slowly fades, leaving the girl with a huge grin and red cheeks.

"I think we're even now." Lizzie decides and kisses Rose's cheeks. Rose giggles and nods, still laying on the couch, exhausted from the tickle attack and all the running around.

When I hear footsteps, I look towards the stairs and see Robbie coming into the living room, smiling at his fiancée and the little girl on the couch.

"Got your revenge, Liz?" He asks and Lizzie nods and brushes some loose strains of hair out of her face before padding the space next to her. Robbie sits down next to her and she leans against him, visibly exhausted from all the chasing around as well.

I smile at the scene before me and kiss Scarlett's cheek, already thankful to be here for Thanksgiving.

The beeping of a timer pulls us all out of the situation and Scarlett takes my hand and leads me into the kitchen to get the cake out of the oven. It smells delicious. While she gets the cake out, I get the frosting out of the fridge and after a few minutes of letting the cake cool off, we start putting the frosting on it.

When we hear little footsteps, I look up and see Rose sneaking up on us but she doesn't go unnoticed by Lizzie, who jumps up and picks her up, making her giggle in surprise.

"Not again, you little thief." She says and spins around with Rose, making her laugh. They move over to the living room, where Rose grabs some toys to play with and Lizzie joins her.

Scarlett and I finish the cake while Flo and Robbie sit on the couch and watch Lizzie and Rose play.

We put the cake into the fridge and before I can go back into the living room, Scarlett pulls me into her, nuzzling her face into my neck, her arms wrapping around my waist. I smile at the sudden display of affection and run my hands through her hair and up and down her back.

"Are we a little cuddly today?" I ask silently and kiss her hair. She pulls back and looks at me.

"No." She replies with a small pout that's adorable and I kiss her lips sweetly until the pout is gone. I don't mind her being cuddly at all, it's honestly cute.

We move into the living room and sit down on the free couch, watching Rose explaining something to Lizzie. Scarlett's fingers intertwine with mine and she rests her legs over mine, cuddling into my side. I carefully wrap one arm over her shoulder, keeping our hands together. She looks over at Robbie and Flo who are invested into their own conversation and smiles a little, resting her head on my shoulder.

When the doorbell rings, Scarlett looks at the clock before getting up, not without kissing my cheek, and going to open the door.

"Y/n?" Flo addresses me and I turn my attention to her.

"Pineapple on pizza, yes or no?" She asks and I am caught a little off guard by her question.

"Ehm..." I say, thinking of an answer. Her and Robbie look at me, waiting for my answer and it amuses me that their conversation apparently was about this topic.

"I guess that depends on if you like it..." I answer vaguely, making both of them huff a little, clearly not answering to their liking.

"Pineapple doesn't belong on pizza. Or do you eat pizza with pineapple?" Flo asks and at least I know now who's on which side.

"Well, to be honest..." I start but get interrupted by a man's voice, wishing us all a happy Thanksgiving.

Thankful for the distraction, I turn to smile at Chris, who just entered the living room. Scarlett stands next to him, smiling and pointing towards the couches, inviting him to sit with us.

He takes the offer and sits down next to Robbie while Scar flops down next to me.

I chuckle to myself when Chris gets interrogated about his opinion on pineapple on pizza.

Rose seems to be done with playing with her toys and comes to us, settling on both our laps, making my heart melt once again.

Lizzie watches her as well and smiles while picking up the toys and putting them back into the toy box.

"Will you draw with me, Mama?" Rose asks and looks up at me. Just like every time she calls me that, my heart fills with pure happiness and love and I smile. I cup her face with one hand and nod.

"Sure, sweetie." I agree and Rose beams at me before sliding off our laps and getting her crayons. Before I follow her, I place a quick kiss on Scarlett's cheek, making her smile.

Rose tells me she wants to draw a turkey today because it's Thanksgiving and I agree that that idea is good.

We start our drawing and I have to admit that I am better at drawing fish than I am at drawing turkeys.

It looks a little strange but Rose doesn't seem to mind at all and while she draws her own, she tells me about what happened yesterday at school. I listen to her and nod along, asking questions along the line to show her I'm paying attention.

When we're ready, she proudly shows me her turkey and I nod impressed. Excited to show everyone else, Rose jumps up and runs around the living room, showing her drawing to everyone. I smile and get up myself, walking back to Scarlett.

"Did you draw something nice too?" She asks with a little smile and I nod, showing her my turkey. She takes it into her hands and looks at it, a smirk curling on her lips.

"Wow, that looks amazing, baby." She says teasingly and I swat her knee, making her laugh a little before kissing me.

"You're not worthshipping my art." I pretend to pout and cross my arms. Scarlett bites her lip to hide a grin and puts the drawing down to hug me.

"I do, baby, I do. It's wonderful. Want me to put it up on the fridge?"

I can't help it but to laugh and let my head rest against her shoulder.

"You're annoying." I huff and now it's her turn to chuckle and kiss my hair.

"I know but you still love me." She whispers and I nod.

"I do love you." I agree and cuddle closer to her.

We watch Rose showing Chris her drawing and telling him about it before she's done and goes to put it on the table, looking around the living room, pursing her lips in thought.

"What is it, sweetheart?" Scarlett asks and Rose shortly looks at her.

"I don't know what to do now." She complains and looks for any kind of suggestions to her mother. Scarlett thinks with her and when Rose looks at Chris, Robbie and Lizzie, Chris shares his plans.

"Well, I thought maybe we could watch the football game?" He suggests but only Robbie agrees with him. Rose shakes her head.

"No, that's boring, I don't like watching sports, it's more fun to play it." Rose disagrees but a second later her face lights up as she has a new idea.

"We can make our own football game." She says excitedly and looks around. We all agree with her suggestion and Rose cheers, running off to get her shoes.

Scarlett looks outside into the backyard. Luckily it's not raining and it also hasn't the past few days, so the ground isn't slippery.

We all get our shoes and coats, although I doubt a little that we will need coats when we run around.

Rose is the first one outside and gets a football from her outside toy box, in which I also put the water guns from when it was hot.

The football isn't the normal size, it's a bit smaller but still looks big in Rose's hands as she throws it into the air and catches it afterwards.

We all join her, after Scarlett put the turkey into the oven and before anyone can take a lead, Rose takes over.

"We need teams to play." She tells us and looks around before taking my hand and pulling me with her.

"Y/n is in my team." She decides and looks at the remaining people, thinking who she also wants on her team.

"Uncle Chris is also in my team." She decides and Chris comes over to us, giving both of us a high five.

Rose seems happy with her pick but I look to the other four adults. If we play like this, it might not be entirely fair. I can see that Scarlett is getting competitive and by the way she eyes me, I know she won't be on my team.

Lizzie and Robbie also already whisper about a tactic, so Flo is left to join our team. I suggest it to Rose, who nods and waves over Flo.

"Alright, the teams are made now to the rules." Scarlett takes over and explains from where to where the field will be and where the endzones are.

We all nod along before we go into a group huddle. Rose has her arms around mine and Flo's legs as she can't quite reach our backs.

We decide on positions and when we have it all figured out, we turn around to the other's, ready to play.

They also are ready and we get into position. We throw a coin for who gets to start and the other team gets it. Since we don't have a referee, we decide when it starts.

When Scarlett gets the ball, she runs towards the endzone but I run after her and stop her by wrapping my arms around her and holding her in place. We decided on the rule not to actually tackle each other to the ground because we don't want any injuries or to get our clothes unnecessarily dirty.

It's enough when the other player can't move with you to count.

Scarlett tries her best but I won't let her move, so she tries her last chance and throws the ball to Lizzie who is close. She catches it and goes to make a run but is caught by Chris and since Robbie is behind, she can't pass the ball and they lose their pass.

Now it's our turn and we get into position, just as we planned.

As soon as the round starts, I take Rose with me and we run into the other's zone.

Scarlett tries to catch us but gets distracted when Chris starts running with the ball. Robbie gets close to him and I quickly pick up Rose, so she can catch the ball.

She cheers when she does so and I run with her towards the endzone but this time Scarlett is quicker and when she reaches us, I put Rose to the ground and hold Scarlett away from getting Rose. The girl runs to the endzone and with a little smile I can see how Lizzie pretends to try to catch her but lets her score this one goal.

Rose throws the ball onto the ground and cheers loudly before dancing happily. Her victory dance is adorable and when I join in, Scarlett laughs with so much softness in her eyes.

We play a few more rounds, scoring goals on both sides until we're all a bit tired out and Rose decided to take a break from playing, too exhausted for another round. Instead she played referee, well until I had to stop Scarlett from scoring, that's when Rose came running towards us and jumping onto her mother's back.

Scarlett huffs out a breath but wraps her arms around Rose, so she won't slip. The football falls to the ground during that action and I grin.

We decide to call it quit after this and since no one really kept track of the points, we don't know who won, it's funny though to listen to Robbie and Chris discuss who won.

Rose stays on her mom's back and I free her from her shoes, while Scarlett kicks off hers. She carries Rose to the couch and carefully sits down with her. With a little giggle, Rose lets herself fall onto the couch and stretches all her limbs away from her.

Scarlett softly smiles at her daughter.

When Rose makes grabby hands at me, I join them on the couch and she climbs into my lap, leaning against me with a content smile. Scarlett hugs the both of us and rests her chin on my shoulder. We stay like this for a little while, just enjoying being together.

I can hear Lizzie and Flo doing something in the kitchen and smile at the smell of food. After our game, I got quite hungry.

Chris appears in our sight and holds up a phone.

"Time for a family picture?" He offers and my heart warms up when Scarlett agrees and changes her position to sit next to me.

Rose shuffles to sit on both our laps and we all beam into the camera.

Chris takes a bunch of pictures because Rose wants to switch sitting positions every few pictures.

My heart warms up, when Rose directs Scarlett and me on how to sit.

We end up with our legs somehow entangled and Rose sitting on top of it. It's a bit strange as a picture pose but we let Rose have her fun.

Our photo session comes to an end when Lizzie and Flo call for us to come eat and we all jump up.

Rose runs ahead to save her seat at the table, making me chuckle a little.

We help to put everything on the table and sit down. Scarlett and I sit next to each other, opposite of Rose. Next to her is Flo, then Chris. To my right there are Lizzie and Robbie. When we sit down, Scarlett's hand settles on my thigh and I glance over at her and for a second it looks like she is glaring at Flo but then she smiles and suggests to go around and say what we're thankful for.

Maybe I just imagined her glaring at Flo but if I wasn't mistaken, it looked as if there was a bit of jealousy in her eyes. I'm not sure why because the last time we were together, which was on her birthday, she didn't seem jealous. So what happened between last time and now?

We didn't even spent time together, the three of us, so how could she have seen something that made her jealous, even if it's just a bit?

I push that thought away since it's not important right now and listen to Chris tell us what he is thankful for.

After him, it's Flo's turn and then Robbie's and Lizzie's. It's cute how they say they are thankful for each other and for the fact that they will get married soon.

Now it's my turn and I look around the table before I speak.
