《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 47: Scarlett's birthday

Pov y/n
It may not have been smart to stay up until midnight when I have work the next day but I don't regret it at all.
Okay, maybe a little bit because I was extremely tired when I had to get up but after a few cups of coffee, I am more awake and good to go.
It was totally worth it to wish Scarlett a happy birthday as one of the first people though.
I thought about calling her but she was probably asleep and I didn't want to wake her up, so I sent her a voice message and a text.
I smile when I read over her reply to my wishes that consist out of multiple thank you's and a light scold that I shouldn't stay up this late.
Well, still worth it.
The shift at the coffeeshop feels longer than usual, even though we have quite a lot customers today but I'm just too excited and a bit nervous for Scar's birthday party tonight.
We talked about the details over the weekend and I helped her set up everything. It was obvious that she was a bit stressed and I did my best to help her.
Rose also seemed to sense the slightly tensed atmosphere because she was really sweet and didn't interfere with Scarlett's and my cleaning.
The party will start today at around six and go on until midnight, although from the moment Rose goes to bed, it will be a bit quieter, so she can sleep.
I will probably go home between ten and eleven because I have to work tomorrow.
Scarlett and I already discussed this and she insisted on calling me an uber for the ride home.
It took me a little while to figure out what I could gift her but I eventually found something that I'm very happy with and I'm excited to see her reaction.
When work is finally over, I go home and clean up a little, knowing that Florence will stay over the next two days.
I let some music play and hum along while dancing through my apartment.
Around an hour later, I get a text message and smile when I see that it's from Florence and that she is here. I buzz her in and when she comes into my sight, she beams at me and pulls me into a warm hug that I happily return.
"Thank you for letting me stay with you." She says and lets go of me. The duffle bag she had with her lays next to her on the ground and I gesture towards my apartment.
"You're welcome." I say and lead her inside. She looks around and smiles when she sees the coloring book Rose left here.
"I like your place, it's very nice." She says and I sit down on my couch, giving her a smile.
"Thank you. I really like it as well." I agree and she smiles at me.
"Your kitchen looks a little small though." She observes and walks around my little kitchen area. I chuckle a little.
"Should I be offended by that?" I ask and she shakes her head quickly.
"No, not at all. It's just that I love cooking and therefore prefer bigger kitchens, that's it." Flo explains and I nod, not being mad at her. She comes to sit next to me and leans back.
"This couch is really comfortable." She says with a smile and takes a pillow to hug it.
"I agree, it really is very comfortable." I smile and watch as she mindlessly plays with the pillow.

"About the sleeping arrangement. I don't mind sleeping on the couch, especially if it's as comfortable as this one." She adds with a little grin. I playfully roll my eyes but shake my head.
"You don't have to. If you don't mind, we can both sleep in my bed, it's big enough for two." I share my thoughts and she thinks about it a few seconds before nodding.
"Sure, I don't mind at all, thank you." She says before a little evil smirk tugs on her lips.
"But I do hope you changed the sheets in case you and Scar did it in your bed." She teases and when I blush and break the eye contact, she gasps a little and laughs.
"So you did do it in there. How was it?" She wants to know and I laugh a little.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" I tease her and she grins and nods.
"I mean, just in case I need to steal you from her, I need to know if you can satisfy my needs." She winks playfully and I nudge her shoulder.
"Goofball. But I'll have you know that I can very much satisfy your needs and I'm even bold enough to say that I can do it better than any man can, so I'd probably be the best sex you ever had." I reply with a smirk and playfulness glints in her eyes.
"Who says I only had sex with men?" She asks back and looks at me challengingly. I suppress a little smirk and just shake my head.
"So, I have to be at work quite early tomorrow but I had my key be copied, so you can come and go whenever you want." I explain, changing the topic. While talking, I point to the second set of keys on my coffee table. Flo nods along.
"I have to work until 6 pm tomorrow and will probably come home after that. On Thanksgiving, we will be at Scarlett's around 11 am, so we can have a calm morning." I continue and Flo nods to everything.
"If you don't mind, I could cook us something tomorrow evening, I'm really good at that." She suggests and with a happy smile I agree to the offer. It's gonna be nice to have a homecooked meal after work and not just junk food or needing to cook first.
We chat a little further about our plans for tomorrow and she tells me that she'll help Scarlett to go to the grocery store first and then will have a fun afternoon with Rose because Scarlett wanted to prepare a Thanksgiving meal for us. Lizzie will help her with that and when Flo watches Rose, the little nugget won't be bored at home.
After our chat, Flo unpacks her bag a little and we get ready for the party later.
I decided on a white blouse with a black bra underneath and some black pants. Flo wears a light blue dress and has some curls in her hair. She looks very beautiful and if I wasn't with Scarlett, maybe I'd ask her out. Not just because she looks amazing but also because I like her playful personality and we get along great.
We call an uber to drive us to Scarlett's house and on the way there, Flo tells me about the wine she bought for Scarlett and how they first drank it together and were thrilled by it.
I laugh when she tells me how she accidentally spilled whine over her dress that night and how they tried everything to get the stain out, which was only partly successful.

When we arrive at Scar's house, I smile at the balloons at the front door and a drawing of a birthday crown by Rose. That's new since I left yesterday but it's adorable.
We get out and ring the doorbell, waiting to be let in.
To our surprise, it's not Scarlett who opens the door, it's Lizzie. She beams at us and waves us in.
We get out of our shoes and can already hear the music play in the living room. Lizzie tells us that a few guests are already there but some also need to arrive.
We nod and walk into the living room that's decorated with a few balloons.
The kitchen isle is full of different snacks like chips, nachos, chocolate, m&m's, gummy bears and also fruits and crackers. There are various plates to stack food on and next to them are cups for drinks.
There are all kinds of sodas and other non-alcoholic drinks.
Since Rose is still around, Scar decided to wait until she's in bed before getting out wine or other alcoholic drinks.
Speaking of, Rose is currently running around the guests, being chased by a man that looks familiar and a few seconds later I remember that he played Captain America.
Before I can do anything else, I am pulled into a hug and smile at the familiar pair of arms that wraps around my body. I turn my head to look at Scarlett. She seems really happy and that's all I need to be happy as well.
"Happy birthday, cuddle bug." I whisper before kissing her softly. She returns the kiss but it breaks after a few seconds because her smile is so wide.
"Thank you, baby." She beams and takes my hand. "I wanna introduce you to my friends."
I give Flo and Lizzie a small wave before I'm being led away from them, seeing them chuckle.
We stop in front of Captain America who now has Rose on his shoulders and when the girl sees me, she squeals and wiggles around.
"Mama!" She exclaims and only for a second I see confusion in the man's face before he smiles softly and lifts Rose off his shoulders and into my arms.
She hugs me tightly and I return the hug.
"Hey, little dolphin." I say and she grins when she leans back and looks at me.
"There are so many people here." She says and looks around before looking back at me. I nod and when she doesn't seem to want to be put down, I place her on my hip.
"Yes, there are. Does it scare you that there are many people here?" I ask and she thinks about it for a few seconds before shaking her head.
"No, not really because it is still my home and I know where everything is. And I also have my aunts Lizzie and Flo here and uncle Chris." She explains and I rub her back with a smile.
"That's great then." I agree and she nods. When she looks over my shoulder and spots Flo, I put her down and she bolts off.
I turn around to look at Scarlett, who watched the interaction with a soft smile. When she notices me looking at her, she smiles and nods to the man in front of us.
"Y/n, this is Chris. Chris, this is y/n." She introduces us and I shake his hand.
"Nice to meet you, y/n." He says with a kind smile that I easily return.
"Nice to meet you as well." I reply and we chat for a few minutes until Scarlett spots someone new she wants to introduce me to.
I wave Chris a quick goodbye before we approach another man. He turns around and I recognize him as Ironman. Apparently he can read that off my face because he grins a little.
"Hey, I'm Robert." He introduces himself and I give him a nod, remembering how my brother once talked about the actor Robert Downey Jr.
"I'm y/n, pleasure to meet you." I say and we shake hands. His grip is firm but not too hard.
"You played Ironman, right?" I ask and a proud smirk curls on his lips.
"Yes I did." He answers and in the corner of my eye, I see Scarlett rolling her eyes playfully.
"My brother is a huge fan of that character, he even has a poster in his room." I share and feel myself relax. I knew, I was gonna meet some other celebrities and was worried they'd think little of me because I'm just a random girl but they treat me just like every other person.
"He has good taste." He smiles and takes a sip from his drink.
"Did you like Ironman this much too?"
I chuckle a little before I answer.
"He's cool but I liked his assistant better. I think her name was Pepper?" I think out loud and the man in front of me pretends to be hurt before we laugh together and I get a light nudge from Scarlett.
"But no one is as cool as Black Widow, of course." I quickly add and she grins playfully, wrapping her arm around me. I lean my head against her and she kisses my cheek.
Robert smiles at our actions and we chat a little bit before Scarlett goes to welcome another friend.
I decide to get some snacks from the isle and sit on one of the bar stools, watching all the people around me.
I barely know any of them and am a little surprised how many Scarlett invited but as long as she is happy, so am I.
I spot Rose and Flo sitting at the dinner table, playing with something they folded out of paper. I join them and Rose excitedly tells me that Flo taught her how to fold little paper boats.
She demonstrates it and I watch her before helping her fold some more. Her plan is to have a fleet of ships for something.
While we fold, she tells us about the picture she drew for her mom's birthday and that reminds me that I have a present for Scarlett as well.
I excuse myself and go on a search for my girlfriend.
She's talking to some people but when she spots me, she waves me over and takes my hand.
I stay silent until their conversation is over and she introduces me to them. They all seem friendly and we laugh about a joke one of them cracks.
After a few more minutes, Scarlett excuses us and leads me a little away from the people, brushing some hair out of my face.
"You look great, by the way." She mumbles against my lips before kissing me shortly. I return the kiss and wrap my arms around her.
"Thank you, so do you." I reply and glance over her outfit. She wears a dark red dress that reaches to her knees and makes her look as stunning as ever. Her smile grows at my compliment and she kisses my cheek.
"Was there anything you wanted to talk about?" She asks and plays with the baby hair in the back of my neck. I hum and nod.
"I have a birthday present I wanted to give you." I say and her eyes start to sparkle.
"You didn't have to do that." She insists but I just shrug and smile.
I tug her towards the entrance where I left my little bag and pull out her wrapped up present.
She takes it and eyes it before looking at me. I only nod to it, not saying anything, waiting for her to open it. She does so and smiles softly when she holds the unwrapped candle in her hands.
It's a scented one, the same I saw in one of her shelfs ones but it burned down about a week ago, so I thought I'd be nice for her to have a new one.
"I love it, thank you angel." She says and kisses me before admiring the candle again.
"It's not the only thing I have for you." I say with a cheeky smile and she raises her eyebrows.
"But I told you not to spend too much money on me." She almost pouts but I shake my head and hand her a small envelope. Her eyes dart from it to me before she opens it and when she reads it, a wide smile tugs on her lips.
"A home-spa-day?" She asks and puts the card back into the envelope. I nod.
"Yes. A day where I will take care of you and make you feel all calm and relaxed. I will massage you and make you food and drinks, run a nice bath for you and if you want to, I can even do your nails but I have to warn you, I'm not the best at that. I thought it might be a nice idea for a relaxing day together and especially after your birthday party and Thanksgiving, you might enjoy a day where you get spoiled, not needing to do anything." I explain and my heart warms up at smile on her lips and the sparkle in her eyes.
"I love it and I can't wait for my home-spa-day." She says and puts the gifts down to give me a happy kiss. This time it lasts a little longer since we're not surrounded by other people.
Her hands wrap around the back of my neck where she plays with my baby hair again while my hands are around her waist. When she pulls away, she looks at me and a little smirk forms on her lips.
"I wasn't gonna say anything with all the people around us but since it's just us here: you look hot in that blouse and with the tip of your bra visible." She whispers and her hands trail around my shoulders, playing with the hem of my blouse, making goosebumps appear on my skin at the slight contact.
"Thank you." I reply, blushing a bit at her compliment, which makes her smirk grow before she lets go of me.
"Too bad here are so many people..." She says, letting the rest of the sentence hang in the air with a wink.
I swallow, my mouth suddenly feeling dry as she grabs my gifts and quickly brings them upstairs. I shake my head to clear my thoughts and go back into the living room, where I see Lizzie waving at me.
I approach her and smile at the man that's sitting next to her on one of the couches. Her legs are resting on top of his and she leans against him.
"Y/n, do you remember when I told you about my fiancée?" She asks and by her light up face, I can tell that she's excited to introduce us. I nod and sit down on her other side.
"This is Robbie." She introduces the man and gives him heart eyes for a few seconds, which is adorable. Robbie holds his hand out for me to shake and I take it.
"I'm y/n." I introduce myself and he nods with a kind smile.
"Nice to meet you. Lizzie already told me she invited you to our wedding, so I'm glad I get to meet you at least once before that." He jokes and I laugh with him. Lizzie grins and waves it off.
"She would have been invited anyway, if not on her own, then as Scar's plus one." She says and Robbie smiles down at his fiancée before kissing her forehead.
"How did you two meet?" He asks interested and while I answer his question, I notice Lizzie playing with his fingers, a content smile on her face. They are pretty cute together.
We talk for a while longer and they tell me about how stressful a weeding can be to plan and how happy they are that they get a little break from that now. Robbie tells me how excited Lizzie got about the question if they wanted to stay for Thanksgiving and her cheeks blush a little but she nods.
We are interrupted when Rose taps my knee and I smile down at her.
"May I have this dance?" She asks and I look at her in surprise at her choice of words but when I see Flo giggling not far from us, I know she put the little nugget up to this. But I don't mind at all and excuse myself from Robbie and Lizzie.
"Of course, m'lady." I answer, making Rose giggle. She grabs my hand and pulls me towards the fireplace, where the most space is since the coffee table and the two armchairs are put away. I smile when I notice the song, it's a Disney one, and know this is also Flo's doing but it makes Rose happy and that's all that matters.
I take Rose's other hand and start to sway around a little until the beat picks up and we jump around a little. Rose tries to sing the lyrics but it's interrupted by giggles, that fill my heart with pure happiness.
I spin her around and when she tries to do the same, I let go of her hand and turn around on my own.
Following an impulse, I pick her up after my spinning and she squeals in excitement and when I throw her into the air a little, before catching her, she squeals again and it mixes with giggles and laughs. It's the most adorable mix and it makes me laugh as well.
After a few more times, I stop throwing her up and place her on my hip, taking her one hand in mine and swaying us around before spinning every once in a while.
When the second song fades, Rose has the biggest smile on her face and beams at me before hugging me tightly.
"That was so much fun!" She cheers and bounces in my arms a little.
"Yes, it was!" I agree and kiss her forehead.
"Mind if I get the next dance?" Scarlett asks and I turn my attention to her. Her eyes sparkle with love and adoration as she looks between Rose and me. Rose nods and I put her down.
"But only if I get to dance with you as well." She compromises and Scarlett promises her before Florence catches Rose's attention and they start to dance.
Since the next song is a bit slower, I put my arms around Scarlett's waist and pull her a bit closer. Her arms wrap around my shoulders and we start to sway in sync. I gaze into her beautiful green eyes and I see so much happiness in them, that it makes my heart skip a beat.
I'm almost too caught up in the moment to notice that a few other people joined us on the 'dancefloor'.
Scarlett draws random patterns onto the back of my neck and her eyes are locked with mine.
Right now it feels like there is no one else but us, nothing but the calm music and her waist beneath my hands, her eyes looking into mine and her gentle touch on my neck.
I pull her a little closer until her body is flush with mine and our faces almost touch but none of us cares because we just enjoy the moment of closeness.
"I love you." She whispers and my heart almost soars out of my chest at her words.

A Girl and Her Food
When a lost girl wakes up without a name, she quickly finds herself alone in a way that people around her can’t fix. Without a real plan and desperate to find what’s wrong with her, she thrashes and bites to stay alive. But human beings are weak things, that band together for strength, no matter who we are. Now if only she could work up the courage to ask one question... It’s normal to get stronger when you drink the blood of monsters. Right? Things to expect: - A powerful but kinda neurotic and emotional protagonist, with some degree of weak to strong. Or maybe strong to stronger, honestly. She's pretty rational and practical about things but won't always make the best decisions, so be warned if you super-dislike characters doing dumb stuff for emotional reasons sometimes. - Lots of dialogue and characterization, especially as we get more into it. It's focused on a single POV, but there might be some sections of other POVs later on, I'm not sure right now. - Magic is on the softer side, but I'll try to keep things fleshed out enough to avoid any obvious "well-established magic could have seemingly instantly solved this problem" moments. - I didn't add the mystery tag because I feel like it implies that this is a detective novel or something, but the story is absolutely incredibly opaque at times. So you'll have the most fun if you go into it trying to puzzle out the nature of events before they're explicitly explained!😇 - Also, I added the genre for completion, but it's gonna take a while to get to the romance. Please wait warmly and have some tea. Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge!
