《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 41: Aquarium

It's been almost two weeks since Halloween and those two weeks were great.

They weren't really much different than my usual weeks but I spent quite some evenings over at Scarlett's house and always enjoyed it.

Ever since Rose called me 'Mama' for the first time, she did it a little more frequently.

She doesn't always address me with that name, she also calls me by my name or 'big dolphin'.

I don't mind either of them but whenever she calls me 'Mama', my heart jumps a little in happiness.

She hasn't talked to Scarlett or me about it yet, so we aren't sure how she feels about it but whenever she says it, she seems comfortable with it and it slips quite naturally off her tongue.

The day after Halloween, Rose sorted out her candy into two piles, one with the candy she likes (it was the bigger one) and one with the candy she doesn't like.

She generously gave that candy to Scarlett and me, which I found quite sweet. Scarlett and Rose had a quick talk about when Rose is allowed to eat candy and when not. Mainly not shortly before meals or after dinner, so the sugar won't keep her up.

The weekend after Halloween, Rose spent at her Dad's and Scarlett and I spent the time together as well. We had a lazy weekend and mainly cuddled and watched TV and went for walks. Scarlett also sat next to me as I sent an application to the organization for the research job. It helped me to have her next to me because her presence calms me down. I haven't heard from them yet but I also don't expect them to answer this fast.

Two days ago, it was Wednesday, I visited them once again for dinner and Scarlett and I shortly talked about the new job.

Rose then remembered that I work at the aquarium and asked Scar and me if she could come visit me. We both agreed to it and Rose cheered excitedly.

Today is Friday and I am a little nervous because Scarlett and Rose will visit me today.

I talked to Mr. Jackson and informed him about that because I wanted to know if I can maybe give them a private tour.

Now, I'm not saying he wouldn't have let me otherwise but as soon as he figured out that I'm talking about Scarlett Johansson, he agreed immediately and even allowed me to take her back with me into the staff area where you can watch the tanks from the top.

Maybe in some ways it is an advantage when the person you're dating is a celebrity.

Anyways, now I'm at the aquarium, bouncing on my feet a little in excitement to see Rose and Scarlett here.

I already gave one tour, since they wanted to grab a snack before coming here. They will stay with me until my shift is over and we will go back to their house after that.

It's become a bit of a habit or ritual that I spend my weekends there but none of us minds and we always have a great time.

When I see them walking it, a wide smile tugs on my lips and Rose lets go of Scarlett's hand to run towards me.

I'm waiting at the ticket counter, so they can buy the tickets while seeing me.

I catch Rose and give her a big hug.

"We're here." She tells me excited and jumps up and down while Scarlett gets in line to buy the tickets.

A few people watch Rose and me but by the soft smiles on their faces, I can tell that they just enjoy our sweet interaction.

"I can see that, little dolphin." I reply with the same energy and Rose grins up at me.

She takes my hand and leads me over to Scarlett who smiles at me. I return her smile and look down at Rose as she points at a drawing on the wall and tells me something about it.

A few seconds, before it's Scarlett's turn at the ticket counter, Mr. Jackson comes into the entrance hall and makes his way over to us.

I kinda gathered that he is a fan of my girlfriend, so it's not a big surprise but it still feels a little weird.

He greets her with a kind smile and by the tone in his voice I can tell that he's excited.

When it's Scarlett's turn to buy tickets, he tells her that it's on the house and that he's happy to greet her here and wishes us a great time before nodding at me and leaving.

I feel my cheeks blush a tiny bit at his behavior but Scarlett brushes it off and takes my hand to give it a reassuring squeeze.

We enter the exhibit and Rose lets go of my hand to run to the aquariums to watch the fish in there. Scarlett and I follow her, our hands still linked.

Rose points to some fish and tells us about how pretty and colorful they are. Her eyes sparkle with excitement and joy and it warms my heart.

Scarlett also seems to be fascinated and pulls me closer to the glass. Her arm wraps around my waist and she leans her head against my shoulder while watching the fish. Rose is in front of us, pointing to the different fish and looking at them in awe.

I can feel my heart pounding in my chest and pure happiness rises inside me.

This right here feels right. It feels like we're a family that belongs together. This might just be the best feeling in the world.

We stay at this aquarium for quite a while until Rose is able to get her eyes off the colorful fish and we continue the tour.

Of course we stop at the next tank and this time I tell them a bit about the fish inside the tank since it's one of the tour spots.

Scarlett still has her arm around my waist while mine lays over her shoulders. She listens intently to me and looks from the aquarium to me while Rose just looks at the fish.

This time we move on a little quicker and slowly make our way through the exhibit.

Rose stops in front of a few children's information boards and little games and we watch her with smiles.

I show them another tank and talk about the fish inside, noticing that other people are listening too, which makes me smile a little.

Rose starts talking to another girl as they point out different fish and I can hear how she proudly tells the girl what she learned from me.

It's adorable and I think right now I couldn't be happier.

Eventually Rose told the girl everything she knows and we continue the stroll.

We reach the aquarium with the seahorses and when I tell Rose that the males are the ones who get pregnant, she giggles.

I notice Scarlett's eyes on me and look at her. She has this soft, adoring look in her eyes that she used to only have when she looked at Rose but now also when she looks at me and it makes my heart happy every time.

At the next tank, Rose is impressed at how big the crabs in there get and backs up a little when one of them moves. She presses her body a little into Scarlett and me and I put my hand on her shoulder to show her we're there.

"They look scary." She states and looks at them before turning around to face us. I nod in agreement.

"They are. Sometimes they look a little bit like alien creatures to me." I share and Rose turns around to look back at them with a thoughtful look before agreeing.

"If you think about them like that, they are more interesting than scary." She slowly concludes and steps closer, her curiosity woken again.

We stay a few more seconds until Rose decides she had enough.

Our next stop are the jellyfish and we stay here quite a long time. I got to admit though, they do look magical and fascinating how they swim around the water.

"I once got stung by one." Rose tells me while her eyes stay on the jellyfish.

"Oh no." I say and Rose nods.

"It was in LA, I think." She continues and Scarlett nods.

"There were some unexpectedly. But Rose was very brave in handling it." Scarlett tells me and Rose grins back at us proudly.

"Yes I was. It hurt but not too badly and when we went to the doctor, I got a lollipop for not crying and some cool band-aids." She tells me and I smile.

"That really sounds very brave." I agree and Rose nods.

"It was all good after a few days and I think the jellyfish didn't mean to sting me." She thinks out loud and frowns a little in thought.

"I'm sure it was an accident." I say and Rose looks at me again.

"Probably. I'm not afraid of them though, at least not when I watch them like this. They don't seem scary here, more like mystical creatures." She observes and points to one with quite long tentacles.

I hum in agreement and we watch them for a while longer until Rose gets bored of them.

"Do you have dolphins here?" Rose asks as we stroll towards the shark exhibit. I shake my head.

"Sadly no but we have sharks." I offer and point towards the exhibit.

For a second it looks like Rose is debating with herself if she is happy with that and then nods with a smile, accepting it.

I guide them into the exhibit and through the underwater tunnel that's leading through a coral reef. Scarlett and Rose both marvel at their surroundings and we stop every few steps because Rose discovers something new.

There are quite a lot of people here, so Scarlett takes Rose's hand as we walk through the tunnel.

Scarlett points at a coral and points out how impressive colorful it is. I agree and tell her a little about how it got its color. Rose doesn't seem very interested in that and looks above us where a ray swims.

We continue the stroll and reach a different aquarium and Rose looks around us before turning around to me.

"Why is it darker in here?" She asks with curious eyes.

"That's because those creatures usually live a bit deeper down in the water and the deeper you go, the less light there is. And because we want to make them feel as comfortable as possible, we dimmed the light in here." I explain and Rose nods in understanding.

"Do you turn the lights off at night?" She asks and steps closer to the glass, her eyes following a shark that swims around slowly.

"Yes because some of the fish need the dark because that's when they get active and start hunting." I tell her and she hums in acknowledgement.

"Do all of them hunt?" She asks and I smile at her interest. I let go of Scarlett, to crouch down next to Rose and point to a shark that's pretty much laying on the ground.

"Do you see that brown shark on the ground there?" I ask and Rose nods.

"That's a nurse shark. Thanks to his color, he can easily hide in the sand during the day. When it gets night, he starts to hunt and those hair-like things around his mouth are barbels, they help him to find food within the sand and other 'dirt' on the sea ground." I explain and Rose leans a little forward to get a better looks.

"His fins are so far down his back." She observes and I nod.

"Yes, that is rather unusual for sharks but that makes them easier to identify."

Rose points to a little cave where a shark hides.

"He looks like he is floating." She observes.

"That's a sand tiger shark, it hides in caves during the day. At night it also goes out to hunt. Other than all the other sharks, it doesn't have an extra air bubble inside it, so it swallows air and 'stores' it in its stomach that functions as an air bubble then." I explain and Rose seems very impressed by that.

"How does it swallow air when it's underwater?" She asks confused and I smile at her interest.

"All fish have gills and when they sallow water, they suck out the bit of air that's in the water and let it out again. The gills allow them to breathe underwater." I answer her question and Rose looks from the fish to me.

"That's so cool." She exclaims and I nod.

"Do you see that brown-greyish shark there?" I ask and point it out and Rose nods.

"That's a sandbar shark. It's also more active during the night but doesn't hide in caves." I tell Rose and she nods, following the shark with her eyes.

"It's a pretty shark." She says and I agree with her.

"Due to its swimming around, it touched a coral that hurt it a couple of weeks back, so we had to get it out of the water, so it won't hurt the sharks anymore." I tell her and Rose looks from the shark to me.

"Is the shark okay now?" She asks worried and I smile reassuringly at her.

"Yes, I made sure it's all healthy." I agree and Rose's eyes grow big.

"You dove in this aquarium?" She asks and points to the tank.

"Yes, I did. I had some diving gear on and then dove down from a platform further up. I did it to see what was wrong with the shark and later on a second time to get the coral out." I answer her question and Rose looks at me impressed.

"Weren't you scared that the sharks would want to eat you?" She asks and leans a little against my shoulder, so I wrap my arm around her.

"No because sharks don't eat humans. There are accidents sometimes because sharks can't see the different between a human and a seal for example. But as soon as they notice it's a human, they let the person alone. Sharks do eat meat but no humans.

It can get a little dangerous when someone is bleeding underwater because sharks can smell blood and will come to the person than but again, they only eat other fish usually." I explain and Rose nods along before looking back at the sharks again.

"Still, I wouldn't have dared to dive down there." She concludes and I chuckle a little.

"And that's totally okay." I say and she smiles.

When I feel a soft hand on my shoulder, I look up at Scarlett who looks down at us with a fuzzy smile and leans down to give me a quick kiss.

Rose either doesn't notice or doesn't care. I slowly get up again and Rose leans against me again.

We watch the sharks for a while longer until I look at the time and smirk a little.

"Sweetie?" I ask and Rose turns around to me.

"How would you like to help me feed the sharks in the other aquarium?" I ask her and her eyes grow huge and she claps and jumps up in excitement.

"Yes, please!" She cheers and I grin.

"Well, then lets do this. But you have to be careful, okay? When we're above the tank on the platform, no jumping around or running, okay?" I let her know and Rose nods with a serious expression.

Scarlett also nods and takes Rose's other hand, silently telling me she will keep an eye on Rose as well.

I lead them to the door that says "Staff only" and show them the preparation room, where I quickly prepare the bucket.

Rose watches me interested and asks me a few questions that I answer. I step out of the room and open another door that reveals steps to the platform above the aquarium.

"We also can't be too loud, because fish don't like that." I explain and Rose nods.

I go up the stairs and wait on the platform for them. Scarlett marvels at the tank beneath us while holding onto Rose's hand. The girl breathes out a "wow" while looking down into the water.

I kneel down and pad the platform beside me to tell them to join me. They both sit down and Scarlett wraps an arm around Rose so she can't fall into the water while looking over the little barrier.

I raise the bucket above the water and pour the food into it. A few seconds later, the first sharks appear a few meters beneath us and start to snatch the food. Rose looks at it amazed.

"Those sharks are blacktip reef sharks. You can tell because the tip of their fin is black. They mainly live in the Indian sea and other than the sharks we just saw, they swim closer to the surface and sometimes their fin pokes out of the water." I explain in a silent voice and Rose nods slowly while watching what's going on beneath her.

"It's very impressive here and also has a calming effect, I can see why you like it so much." Scarlett silently says and smiles at me. I return the smile and take her free hand.

"I'm glad you're enjoying it as well." I say and she leans her head against my shoulder.

We stay in this position a little longer, until we get up and walk back downstairs and out into the visitor area a few minutes later.

Rose wants to look at the sharks again and we let her lead the way.

By the way she gets slower in her movements, I can tell she's getting tired and smile a little.

Exploring the aquarium with all the different influences and excitement, must be exhausting. And a few moments later, she turns around to me and reaches her arms out for me, making little grabby hands.

"Mama, up please." She mumbles and my heart once again melts at her cuteness.

I pick her up and she rests her head on my shoulder.

We watch the fish around us and I get lost in the view as well.

When Scarlett nudges my side a little, I look over at her and she nods her head towards Rose.

I look at her and smile when I see her asleep in my arms.

Scarlett and I share a look and head out of the aquarium. We walk slow and take in the last few views before returning back to the entrance, so I can change into my normal clothes again.

My shift is now over anyway, so it fits pretty good. Scarlett shows me where the car is parked and I carefully buckle Rose up in her seat, not wanting to wake her up. We get in the car as well and drive home, this time without the radio playing to not wake Rose.

But when we arrive at their house, Rose stirs awake and gives me a tired smile when I carry her inside the house.

Scarlett tells us we can play a little while she prepares dinner, a loving expression on her face before she gives both of us a kiss on the cheek and heads into the kitchen.

I take Rose with me to the couch and settle down with her. She is still a little hazy from her nap and cuddles into me, which I don't mind at all.

"Thank you for the cool tour, Mama." She says and looks up at me with happy eyes.

"Of course, sweetie. I loved showing you around." I tell her and kiss her forehead. Rose's smile grows before she purses her lips a little in thought.

"Are you okay with me calling you Mama?" She asks and suddenly seems a little shy. I smile at her adorable question and brush some hair out of her face before placing a kiss on the top of her head.

"Yes, of course. I like it." I reassure her and her eyes light up at my words.

"So I can call you that whenever and however often I want?" She asks with hope in her voice and my eyes grow soft at her adorableness.

"Yes, you can my little sunshine." I confirm and with a huge smile she hugs me.

This little girl really is the sweetest and I wouldn't want any other girl as my daughter.

Wait, daughter?

Do I see Rose as my daughter?

Well, I do, I have to admit that. I might not know her for very long but I love her so much and would do anything to make her happy.

As that thought settles in, I smile happily and rest my head on top of Rose's.
