《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 26: Little waitress

I bounce on my feet a little as I wait for a specific person to arrive to the coffeeshop.

It's Wednesday now and it can only be a matter of minutes until Scarlett and Rose arrive.

When I talked to my boss on Monday, she was okay with Rose being behind the counter with me, as long as I make sure that we wash our hands and don't make anything dirty.

I texted Scarlett on my way to the aquarium that day and she seemed truly relieved over the message, knowing she has a solution to Rose's free day.

She also said, she and Rose will arrive around 8:15 am at the shop, which is a pretty good time because the first morning rush will be over by then.

It is now 8:15 am and my eyes dart to the clock every few seconds, excited to see them again.

After our phone call on Saturday, we only texted, which I'm fine with, we don't have to spend every second together.

Especially, since we're 'only' dating and are friends otherwise. I did get a few pictures on Sunday though because Rose wanted to keep me updated on their day, which is honestly very adorable.

I feel myself starting to fall more and more for Scarlett while my love for Rose grows as well. That little sunshine always melts my heart and she already has a place in my heart, right next to her mother.

A tap on my shoulder brings me back to reality and I look at Jesse who is smirking at me.

"Where were you with your thoughts? Or do you want me to guess?" He grins and wiggles his eyebrows. I swat his shoulder playfully and roll my eyes but smile.

"I was only thinking about my weekend and today." I explain and lean my hip against the counter.

"Oh, let me guess again." He says and makes kissing noises, which I roll my eyes at again.

"Not quite. After the date I told you about, we didn't see each other again. Besides, stop making fun of me. You and your crush are equally obsessed with each other." I point out with a grin and Jesse raises his hands in defense, a happy expression on his face.

"Fair enough. But he really is great and the fact that he even told his friends about me, makes it even more serious." Jesse says, nodding along with his words.

I give him a soft smile at the softness in his voice and how his eyes start to sparkle when he speaks about that young man. I hope he will have a great time with him and they will take the step to ask one another to be in a relationship together.

"I suppose, you might be a little distracted today?" He asks, bringing his attention back to me, not saying it in a condescending way.

"Yes, probably. But if you need me, please don't hesitate to tell me, I can bring Rose back to Scarlett and help you with your work." I tell him, meaning it as well.

"I know but I'll still try to give you as much time as possible." He says, patting my back with a smile.

"Thank you, I will return the favor at some point." I reply and smile as well as he waves it off.

Before I can say something else, he nods towards the door and only a second later, I hear the little doorbell and turn around, a wide smile spreading on my face.

I step around the counter as I see the little sunshine run towards me.

She launches herself into my arms and I catch her, spinning her around before putting her back down. She giggles and gives me a huge smile.

"Hey, big dolphin." She greets me and I crouch down to be the same height as her.

"Hey, little dolphin. Are you helping me a little bit today?" I ask and her eyes light up as she nods excitedly.

"Yes, Mommy said I can, as long as it's not too full." She explains with a proud expression.

"Very well. We'll get you all ready soon then but first I'll say hello to your Mom, okay?" I say and Rose nods and watches me getting back up.

Scarlett smiles softly at me as I walk over to her and open my arms, asking for a hug. She nods slightly before she lets me pull her into a hug and I breathe in her scent that become kinda familiar over the time.

"How are you?" I ask after pulling back and smiling at her.

When I'm with her, it's really hard not to smile because just being near her makes me happy.

"Good, a little stressed about all the work I have to do but that's nothing new." She replies and brushes a loose strain of her out of her face. I have to withstand the urge to take it between my fingers and play with it, remembering we are in public and in front of Rose. So, I just nod.

"I'm glad you're good though." I reply and her smile widens a little.

"How are you?" She asks back and holds out her hand as Rose comes back to us after looking around a bit.

"I'm happy to have you both here and to see how this day goes." I answer and see both blonde's eyes starting to sparkle a little at my words.

"Can we get me ready then?" Rose asks and swings her and her Mom's hand.

"Of course, sweetie. The usual?" I first reply to Rose before addressing Scar, who nods and points with her head towards her usual table, indicating that she'll be there.

"Alright, come with me then, little dolphin." I say with a smile and hold out my hand for Rose. She takes it and gives her Mom a little wave before. Scarlett waves back and I lead Rose into the staff room.

"First, we have to get you into an apron, so it's not bad if you spill something on your pretty shirt." I explain and Rose grins, pointing to the shark on her little t-shirt.

"That is a shark, you know? They look a little like dolphins but they aren't. A lot of people are scared of them but sharks actually don't like to eat humans." She explains proudly and I smile and nod, listening to what she's telling me.

"That is very true. How are you so smart?" I ask and bop her nose, which makes her giggle.

"I asked my teacher about it last week, so I can show you." She tells me and my heart melts at how cute she is.

Rose's attention shifts to the apron in my hand and her eyes grow big.

"Is that mine?" She asks and touches the fabric.

"Yes. We always have some extra, so we can wash ours. And for today, this is yours." I explain and kneel down to help her put it on.

I already made a knot into the loop for the head, so it won't hang too low, since it's obviously too big for her. My apron ends mid-thigh, so it's a little bit too long for Rose, at least as a normal apron. It reaches down to Rose's ankles and makes her look really adorable.

"You have to be careful when running around, okay? Because if you run, there is a chance you might trip and we don't want that." I make sure she's aware and she nods along while I wrap the straps around her body to knot it behind her back after going around her front one time.

"Tada. You look like you work here." I say and Rose bounces on her feet a little as she looks down and claps.

"We just need to wash our hands and then we can start working, okay?" I ask and Rose nods, taking my hand.

I smile at the action and lead her to a sink, pulling out a little stool for her to stand on, so she can reach the sink.

We both was our hands before I bring her back into the front room. Scarlett watches us with a soft smile before opening her laptop.

"Can we make Mommy's coffee?" Rose asks excitedly and jumps up and down, always aware of her apron.

"Of course we can. First, we need to brew the coffee." I say and point to the machine.

Rose looks at it in all seriousness and nods before reaching up for me. With a small smile, I pick her up and place her on my hip, so she can reach everything.

I show her what to do and what to buttons to push.

The more difficult parts are mine but she helps with the ones where there is no risk of spilling anything. After all, I'm still at work and need to be somewhat efficient.

Rose watches as the coffee pours into the cup we put beneath it and purses her lips a little in concentration.

When it's done, I take it out and place it next to the machine, so we can put the milk and sugar in.

Since it's for her Mom, I let Rose help a little in pouring it in, stopping her before it becomes too much. I hand her a little wooden stick to stir everything and put her down again.

"Now we can serve it. But since it's hot, we put it on a tray." I explain and grab a tray where I put the cup onto. Rose looks up at me in question and I carefully hand her the tray.

"Careful and no running, we don't want the coffee to spill over." I remind her and she nods.

She watches the cup in concentration while balancing the tray to her mother's table. Scarlett already looks at us with a smile and makes room on the table for the tray. Rose places it down before grinning at her mother.

"I made that coffee." She proudly tells her mother and looks at her. Scarlett nods impressed.

"Very well done, sweetheart. Mind if I try it?" She asks and Rose nods excitedly.

Scarlett blows a little onto the hot drink before taking a few sips. I use that time to pick up the tray again. She nods approvingly and brushes over Rose's hair.

"That is very good, Rosie." She says and Rose's eyes start to sparkle at the compliment.

I look at Scar and she looks up at me, giving me a nod to show me she is being honest. A smile spreads on my lips and I nod as well. Scar gets out her wallet and gives me the money for the coffee, making Rose scoff a little.

"Oh, sorry, baby. Did you want to get the money?" Scarlett asks and Rose nods eagerly. Before handing her the money, Rose looks at me and I nod in agreement.

When Rose holds the money in her hands, she smiles widely and gives her Mom a kiss before showing me the earned money.

"Let's go, put it in the register, shall we?" I ask and Rose nods, making her way back to the counter.

"Thank you for taking care of her." Scarlett says before I can go follow Rose.

"Of course, you're welcome." I reply, earning a sweet smile from her. I return the smile before I hurry up to get to Rose who is waiting for me at the register.

"Can I put it in?" She asks and gives me puppy dog eyes.

As always my heart melts at that sight and I nod and pick her up, so she can reach the register.

I show her which buttons to press and she giggles when it opens with a 'bing'. She puts the money in and watches me close it before she wiggles a little in my arms, indicating that she wants down.

I set her down again and watch as she walks around our display to take a look at it. While she does that, a customer comes in and walks up to the counter. Jesse is currently preparing another order, so I take this one.

"Good morning. What can I get for you?" I ask, putting on a polite smile. The woman smiles at me before looking at our menu that's behind me.

"I take a medium Frappuccino please." She orders and I nod.

Before I start to make her coffee, I look over at Rose, who observes the situation before looking back at our display.

It doesn't take long and I hand the woman her coffee in exchange for money. When she's gone, Rose comes around the counter and points to it.

"Can I sit on there?" She asks and I give her an apologetic smile and brush some hair behind her ear.

"Sorry, sweetie but no. We serve food to the people here, so we can't sit on it, you know?" I explain and she nods in understanding.

I almost expect her to argue about it but she just raises her arms for me, so I lift her up and place her on my hip again. She seems satisfied with this and smiles.

A young men walks in and I look for Jesse who is currently not around, so I will take his order.

"Can I?" Rose asks and looks at me. I look between her and the man, a little unsure what she will do. The man nods with a friendly smile, so I give Rose a nod as well.

"Good morning. What can I get for you?" She asks the man and I smile to myself, now understanding why she observed my previous conversation. The man smiles at her cuteness.

"Just a small coffee. No milk and no sugar please." He says and Rose nods before looking at me.

"Can I help again?" She asks sweetly and once again I check with the customer who seems to be calm about it and nods.

"Yes, you can help." I answer and her face lights up.

As before I take her to the coffee machine and am a little impressed when she remembers what I told her before. The coffee is quickly made and I put the lid on it, before bringing it back to the counter. The man gives me the money.

"Bye, have a nice day." Rose says and waves at him with a smile. The man smiles as well and waves back.

"Thank you, you too." He says, which makes Rose smile even more. Before he goes, he turns to me.

"You have a very polite daughter." He says with a smile and turns around to go.

I look after him a few seconds, a bit surprised by his words but inside they make me feel giddy.

Rose leans her head against my shoulder and grins up at me, not at all bothered by the fact that someone assumed she is my daughter.

"You did a very good job, little dolphin." I say and her face lights up at the praise.

"Thank you." She says proudly. I bounce her a little in my arms to make her giggle and smile at that sound. Hearing her giggle or laugh became alongside Scarlett's voice and laughter my favorite sound.

"Can I serve more people?" Rose asks and I shift her to place her on my other hip.

"We will have to see. If a lot of people come in here, it's very busy and it's all a rush, that's not the best time then but if it's only one or two people, I think that should be possible." I explain and brush my hand through her hair. Rose thinks about my words and nods.

"Okay." She says, a smile back on her face.

Jesse comes to join us and he greets Rose before I tell him about her wish to help. He glances at me with a little grin before talking to Rose and offering to get her a stool so she doesn't need to be held.

"But I like to be held by y/n." She explains to him and my heart is now completely melted at her words.

I mean I know she likes to hang out and play with me and stuff but hearing her say she likes me to hold her, just makes it even more real and shows me that she really likes me.

I lean my head a little against hers and smile happily. Jesse notices that with a side glance and I see how much he feels with me right now.

"Yeah, I can imagine it's very nice." He agrees with Rose who is thinking again.

"But if I have a stool, I can walk around better." She thinks out loud before she agrees with Jesse's idea.

Jesse salutes, making Rose giggle, before he goes to get the stool. I lean my head back and Rose's head tilts up to look at me with a small pout.

"What's wrong, sweetie?" I ask, not liking seeing her pouting.

"When Mommy does that, she always gives me a kiss." She tells me, the pout still present on her lips.

It takes me a second before I understand what she means and a smile creeps onto her face.

"Am I allowed to give you one as well?" I ask, wanting to make sure I don't cross any boundaries.

Rose nods and I lower my head again, pressing a gentle kiss onto her hair.

Her face lights up and she gives me a wide smile before hugging me. My heart soars with happiness in this moment and I almost don't notice how Jesse puts the stool down.

When I feel another pair of eyes on me, I search the room and my eyes meet with Scarlett's who watches us with a more than happy face.

Seeing her this happy as well almost lets my heart explode with happiness.

When Rose leans back, she notices the stool and I put her down, so she can stand on it.

Now she can see above the counter, not a lot but enough.

Another customer comes in and Jesse winks at me before he goes to refill some things.

As before, I let Rose take the order but since the process of making this coffee is more difficult, she only watches from her spot.

It doesn't stop her from proudly presenting the coffee to our customer though who has an adoring expression on their face at Rose's cuteness.

We continue this a few times and whenever the coffee is easy to make, I let Rose help and I have to admit, she takes it very serious and nothing goes wrong.

When Jesse comes back and announces he will go see if anyone needs another cup of coffee, Rose jumps off her stool to go help him.

She observes him and comes running back to me when he tells her to give me the orders. I make them and watch them serve coffee to the few people. Everyone seems to adore Rose and they smile at her sweetly.

I serve another customer before Rose comes back around the counter while Jesse starts to clean a table.

"Mommy wants another coffee." She tells me excitedly and walks over to the coffee machine, waiting for me to pick her up so she can help me.

I do so and we make another coffee together before she carefully brings it to her mother. When she comes back with the money, I allow her once again to put it into the register.

After a glance to the clock, I know that there will come in quite a lot of people for their coffee break, so I tap Rose's shoulder to get her attention.

"There will come a lot of people in a bit and it will be very busy. Could you go join your Mom then? Because it's just stressful then and I don't want you to lose having fun making coffee." I explain and Rose nods understandingly.

"Can I have a hot chocolate for my break?" She asks and I ruffle her hair a little bit with a smile.

"Of course, little dolphin. Just please go ask your Mom first, okay?" I say and Rose nods, before walking to her mother to ask.

I don't think Scarlett will have a problem with that but I'm not Rose's mother, so I can't just decide.

Rose comes back with a grin and I know Scarlett allowed her to have a hot chocolate. I pick Rose up again since she wanted to help and we make her a cup of hot chocolate together before she brings it over to her table and plops down onto a chair.

Just as she sits down, a bunch of customers enter the store and for a good amount of time, Jesse and I have our hands full.

As soon as the last one leaves, I look over to Rose and Scarlett. Rose wiggles in her chair a little while looking at me. I grin at the obvious sign that she wants to help again.

There are a few crayons and a paper in front of her but she didn't drew anything, too occupied to watch me. I give her a nod and she comes running back to me, always careful to not trip on her apron.

"Can I ask the people who sit here what they want again?" She asks, swinging my hand around a little. Her behavior makes me smile to myself and crouch down a little.

"Yes, but since Jesse is in the back right now, please only one person at the time. You can ask them what they want and if they want something, you come back and tell me, okay? And if you forgot, that's okay you can ask again." I explain and encourage her.

She beams at me and nods before taking off. I get up again and watch as she goes to the first table.

She comes back with a smile and tells me what the man ordered. I smile at her and tell her I got it.

While she takes off, I start making the coffee. Just as I'm finished, she is back again and tells me the next order. When she sees the finished coffee, she asks if she can bring it to the person and I tell her only if she is careful.

In full concentration she brings the coffee to the table and hands me the money before going to take the next order.

We keep this up until she asked everyone and stands back on her stool, ready to help the next customer.
