《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 15: Emergency

Pov y/n
With every passing day, I get more and more into a routine at the aquarium and Steph, Billy, that's my other co-worker, and I get along great and always communicate which jobs we prefer each day and fill out the schedule together.
Turns out, they prefer the normal tour and leave the shark tour to me. Which is great, because a I love the shark tour. We switch who gets to feed which animals and it all works pretty great.
The moments where I have nothing to do, I walk around the building, seeing if I can help anyone. I could never get tired of just watching the fish swim around peacefully and if I didn't have to work, I would just sit in front of the tanks the whole day.
Although I have to say, that I really like the feedings because I get to see the animals from a different angle and I feel like I am a little closer to them than when I'm in front of the thick glass.
The urge to just sit down on the platform above their tanks is big but I don't do it because I have other things to do.
The coffeeshop also goes great and I enjoy working there. Jesse still asks me about the woman he saw me with.
I haven't told him Scarlett's name or anything but he is still excited for me and asks me how I'm feeling about her and if I want it to be something serious. I was honest and told him that I don't know. Because on the one hand I would love for it to become something more but we only met a little over two weeks ago, so I shouldn't expect anything soon or at all, since I still don't know if Scarlett likes women in that way.
Today is Friday and I'm currently sitting in front of an aquarium, watching one of the sharks closely. Something seems a little off and I'm not sure why. From this point of view the shark doesn't seem hurt but the way he swims tells me he is, I just don't know where.
I pull my phone out to call Mr. Jackson and let him know, when a text from Scarlett makes my phone buzz. I frown a little while I read it.
Scarlett: Please call me as soon as possible, I need your help.
That sounds serious and for a few seconds I'm worried something really bad happened, like she or Rose got hurt but I probably wouldn't be the first person she would text then.
Y/n: I have work for another hour but after that I will call you, okay?
Scarlett: Yes, thank you.
I look at our chat for a few more seconds before I open Mr. Jackson's contact and call him. It's a quick call and he says he will come see for himself.
While I wait for him, my eyes stay on the shark while my mind is elsewhere.
I hope Scar and Rose are okay. She said it was kinda urgent but not so much that I would have to call her during my work, which makes it less worse I suppose.
I mean, if it was a really bad situation, she probably couldn't wait an hour and just text me what's the matter.
I'm brought back to my current situation when Mr. Jackson appears next to me.

"Which shark do you mean?" He asks, his eyes searching for the shark already.
"This one." I say and point to the side, where the shark I'm talking about it swimming around alone.
Mr. Jackson walks along the glass to get a closer look. I follow him, now completely back on this topic.
"You're right, it does look like something isn't quite right but I don't see any injuries. Maybe it's just a bad day?" Mr. Jackson thinks out loud. I watch the shark a bit longer until I hum. I'm not agreeing but I also don't see what could be wrong.
"Maybe." I say and for a little while we both just watch the shark.
"We will keep an eye on it and if it's still there in a few days, we will take a closer look." Mr. Jackson decides and I nod, sounds like a smart idea.
"Thank you for calling me, I will write it down so we can keep an eye on that shark the next few weeks." He says and turns around to look at me.
"You're welcome." I say and he nods before walking away. My eyes dart back to the shark, hoping it really is just a bad day, even though that's not very possible.
The rest of my shift goes by slower than usual as I keep thinking about Scarlett. This time not in the way that I'm admiring her in my mind but I'm worried that something is wrong.
When I'm finally done, I grab my bag from the staffroom and get into my own shirt again. I say a quick goodbye to Steph and Billy before heading out.
As soon as I'm out of the building, I dial Scar's number and put my phone to my ear. It rings a few times before she picks up.
"Hey, y/n. Thank you for calling." She greets me and by her tone I can tell she is a bit in a hurry.
"Hey Scar, what's the matter?" I ask while making my way to the subway station.
"Can I ask you for a big favor? I know we don't know each other that long but please." She says, her voice hinting that she's a little desperate.
"Of course, what is it?" I ask, now worried again that something is wrong.
"I have a very important gala tonight that I can't miss and it's actually Dad-weekend for Rose but he said he couldn't take her this weekend without discussing it and now I need someone to watch Rose. I know it's very spontaneous but I really need someone I can trust to watch her because I can't really take her with me and I don't want to leave her alone, obviously." Scar takes a deep breath as she finishes her explanation, waiting for my answer.
I process her words for a few seconds before I slowly nod.
"Yes, I can watch her, no problem." I answer.
I didn't really have any plans for today so that's fine. The only thing I had in mind was taking a walk but that's something I can do some other time as well.
"Thank you! You're a lifesaver. I can send you someone to pick you up, then you're quicker as if you take the subway. Also, could you come right now?" She asks and I hear the uncertainty and slight embarrassment in her voice for making it this urgent.

"Yes, I'm just about to get into the subway, maybe who ever picks me up can meet me at a station closer to you?" I suggest and hear Scarlett letting out a breath of relief.
"Great idea. Which station are you getting out?" She asks.
I tell her and we decide on a spot where I will meet the driver who will pick me up. She tells me which car it will be and how the driver will look so I know and don't have to worry about being kidnapped.
Around half an hour later I'm in the car on my way to Scarlett.
I love spending time with her and Rose but thinking about the reason, her ex-husband bailing on them, makes me a little angry.
It's not that I don't get that sometimes there are moments where you just don't have time, that's normal but just assuming Scarlett has time and letting her deal with it alone is rude and in my opinion a dick move.
But it's not my place to do or say anything about it and I'm sure Scarlett will talk to her ex about this.
When we come to a halt, I realize that we are in the driveway of Scarlett's house, the gate slowly closing behind us. I thank the driver and get out.
After I knock on the door, a few moments of silence go by until it's being opened.
I'm a little surprised to see Rose open the door and smile down at her. She smiles back but I also see a little disappointment in her eyes, which hurts me. Of course, she is disappointed her father bailed on her.
"Come in." She says and takes my hand to tug me inside.
I follow her and close the door behind me. She waits until I am out of my shoes and pulls me towards the living room. I look around for Scarlett but can't find her.
Rose leads me to the coffee table where she is doing a puzzle at the moment.
"Look, I am already pretty far." She says proudly and points to the puzzle.
"Yes, that looks great, well done." I agree and her smile grows before she plops down on the ground again to continue her puzzle.
She starts to tell me about her puzzle and the motive, which is a candy shop and points out the candy she likes. I listen and comment a little bit, so she knows I'm listening.
"Alright, Rosie, I'm going to head out in a bit." I hear Scarlett's voice, slightly muffled which leads me to think she is upstairs.
Rose looks up and runs towards the stairs to say goodbye to her mom.
I follow Rose and when I look up the stairs, I see Scarlett walking down and everything seems to slow down.
She's wearing a gorgeous green dress that, if I would have to assume, is the same color as her eyes.
It hugs her perfectly and she looks absolutely stunning in it. Her hair is tied up into an elegant hairstyle and she wears a simple, silver chain around her neck.
The silver matches the light glitter on the straps of her dress that go down over her back. She has a pair of silver high heels in her hands and smiles down at Rose as she walks down the stairs.
My jaw is still dropped and I have to keep myself from drooling. How can someone be as beautiful as her?
And I don't mean that in a creepy way, I mean it in a respectful way. It doesn't matter what she wears, she always looks amazing.
This outfit though is breathtaking and the way she moves in it is just...I don't have words to describe it.
When she reaches the last steps, I remember that I'm starring at her and close my mouth, slightly blushing at my own realization.
But either Scarlett didn't notice or chose to ignore it.
"Thank you so much for coming on short notice." She says and smiles at me.
"Of course." I reply, smiling as well.
She turns around to Rose and kneels down a little, which is very impressive in that dress.
"I'm sorry I have to go, sweetheart. But I will make it up to you, I promise. We will have a mommy-daughter-day this weekend and do a lot of great things, okay?" She says in a soft tone while cupping Rose's face. Rose nods and smiles at her mom.
"Pinky-promise?" She asks and holds out her hand to her mother. Scarlett links her pinky finger with Rose's and the girl's smile grows.
"You behave, okay? Y/n will take care of you tonight. I don't know when I will be back yet, but I try to be back as soon as possible. Be nice and listen, okay?" Scarlett tells Rose, her voice still soft but her tone a bit sterner.
"Yes, I will behave, Mommy." Rose promises and Scarlett smiles at her before hugging her daughter tightly and peppering her face with kisses, which makes Rose giggle.
Scarlett gets up, holding her daughter's hand and turning to me.
"She already had dinner but if you need anything, feel free to take anything from the fridge. Bedtime is between eight and nine, half past nine at the latest. She can watch one or two episodes of her favorite show before bed. Pyjamas are on her bed and toothbrush in the bathroom. She likes to listen to a story to fall asleep to and if you need anything or have any questions, just text me. I will try to answer as fast as possible." She informs me about everything important.
"Alright, we can do that." I say and wink at Rose who tries to wink back but ends up blinking.
"Okay, I will text you when I'm on my way back. If there's an emergency, please call me." Scar says, looking between Rose and me and I nod once again.
"I will." I assure her and she breathes in.
"See you later, y/n." She says to me and I give her a small wave before she turns around to Rose again.
"I love you, my sweet girl. Good night." She coos and kisses Rose's cheek who hugs her mother tightly.
"Good night, Mommy." Rose replies before Scarlett lets go of her, gets into her heels and opens the door.
After a last wave, she disappears and the door closes again.
A/n: How do you think will their night go?
Thanks for reading and love to you all
