《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 5: First day

Pov y/n
The next day my alarm pulls me out of my world of dreams. Normally I would groan and be annoyed but today I'm excited. This will be my first whole day in New York and the start of a new life.
I pick out a neat shirt and put on some jeans before doing my hair and heading downstairs.
On my way to the shop, still guided by my phone, I get a bagel and eat it on the way. I check the time and nod, I'm five minutes early, that's good.
The doors are already open so I enter the shop and see only a few customers. One is standing at the counter, three sit around the shop. I decide that it's probably smart to tell the man behind the counter why I'm here. He finishes of the customer before me and turns to me with a friendly smile.
"How can I help you?" He asks.
"I'm here for the job. I'm supposed to talk to the boss, I think." I reply friendly and feel my heart beating a little faster of the thought to finally have a job and being able to start a life here.
The man nods and excuses himself before getting his boss. I look around the shop until he comes back with a woman walking behind him.
She's tall and wears a white top and tight jeans. Her attentive, grey eyes are almost intimidating but the smile on her lips make her seem less scary.
She holds out her hand for me to shake.
"You must be y/n, I'm Ms. Miller." She introduces herself. I take her hand and shake it. Her grip is firm but not too hard, just enough to make her authoritarian.
"Yes, I'm y/n." I confirm and she gestures to a free table, leading me there.
We sit down and she looks at me for a few seconds as if she wanted to scan me and see if there's anything I might hide.
"So, you want to work here?" She asks and leans back, now the smile back on her lips and I relax a little.
"Yes. I saw the 'help wanted' sign and thought I'd give it a try." I answer truthfully. Ms. Miller nods.
"Have you ever worked in a coffeeshop?" She asks further.
"Yes. When I was in college, I worked part time to pay my student loan, so I have around three years of experience." I tell her and she nods, slightly impressed.
"What did you study?" Her interest seems genuine.
"Marine biology." I say with a small smile, remembering my time in college.
"That sounds really interesting. You'd probably enjoy a visit at the aquarium." She smiles. I'm a little confused by the change of topic but hum in agreement.
"I always liked to watch the fishes swim around. It fascinates me and for some reason has a calming effect on me." I agree and remember how amazed I was when I first visited an aquarium.

"Well, then I know where to send you when the day is hard." Ms. Miller jokes and I grin but nod.
"Okay, but coming back to the job offer. Would you be able to work part time and from around 7:30 am until 1 pm?"
I take a second to think about it and nod.
"Yes, that would fit."
"Great, I'll get the contract ready and if you want to, you can start today." She offers and gets up. I also get up and wait for her at the counter. The man smiles at me, leaning on his arms.
"I'm Jesse, by the way." He introduces himself.
"I'm y/n, nice to meet you." I reply and give him a smile.
But before he can say anything further, Ms. Miller comes back and hands me some papers and a pen. I take them and sit down at a table close by to skim the contract.
The payment is okay, not the best but good for working in a coffee shop but definitely not enough for an apartment. Still a good start and maybe I can start looking for apartments now and rent one when I have a second job.
I fill in the spaces and sign the contract. Then I get up and hand it back to Ms. Miller who takes it and looks over it before nodding.
"Since you already have experience, it probably won't take long for Jesse to show you around and explain everything to you." She says and looks between Jesse and me before going into the back of the shop. Jesse's smile grows.
"Welcome to 'The Bean'. Where all your dreams will come true." He adds with a grin that I return, he seems to be nice.
After a quick glance around the shop, he takes me to a little staff room and hands me an apron with the shop's logo and name on it. I tie it around my waist while he shows me around the room.
We go back to the front counter and he points out some things and explains a little bit. When we reach the coffee brewer, he points out different features and shows me where the extra flavors are.
It's not too different from my job back in college and I think I can do it.
Next he shows me where the baked goods are and tells me they are freshly made every day and delivered from a local bakery. They are in stock underneath the counter to refill the glass display.
The coffee is in a small extra room he shows me next and explains me the preparations for each day.
In between he takes an order and makes a coffee. I watch him and it seems easy enough. The last thing he shows me, are the cleaning utensils to wipe the tables after use.
When he asks me if I have any other questions, I shake my head and he leads me back to the counter where he remembers to show me how the register works.

After that he nods towards the entrance where the next customer walks in, this will be my first try.
It all goes good and I watch the customer sit down with his coffee. Jesse nods impressed and goes to clean a table when another customer leaves.
I look at the clock, it's 8:45 am currently, well this is calm. Usually there was more work to do in my old job.
Around fifteen minutes later I know, I spoke too soon.
I don't know if New York wakes up at 9 am or if that's the first break for people who work in offices but the shop is full and I have my hands full with work.
Jesse and I work on different sides of the counter, so there are two lines and we can work quicker. The people now aren't really patient and it's good that we can split them in half because otherwise they seem like people who complain easily.
The wave of customers dies down a little and I am able to leave the counter to take care of the customers who sit at the tables. I fill up their cups or wipe the table or push the chair back in after they left.
It's quite busy but a small part of me missed the feeling of working in a coffeeshop. The smell of muffins and coffee fills my nose and I automatically smile at the combination.
When the woman who served me yesterday walks back in, I'm confused and look at the clock. Oh, I didn't notice my shift is already over.
I finish wiping off the table and also wipe over the counter one time before I hang my apron onto my new hook in the staff room.
Jesse chats a little with the girl and I say goodbye and wave before leaving the shop.
First day of work done.
I decide to stroll around a little more, maybe I find a pool where I can swim a little bit.
At this time, New York is busier than last afternoon. This time I take my time to look at the people closer, not in a creepy way, just to get a feeling for this city.
I find a park and explore it. For a few seconds I stop at the playground and watch a bunch of kids run around, climb, play, slide or swing.
A little smile curls on my lips, I like children, they are just so pure, honest and happy. I hope to have some of my own one day, I'm not quite sure how many but I'd like at least two so they can play together.
My walk continues and I watch the skaters for a little while before settling down on a bench at a small lake.
I watch the water and my eyes follow the tiny waves when something touches the surface of the water.
Sometimes I can see little fish under the surface but within seconds they are gone again. It's too quick for me to see which kind they are, so I keep watching the water until I know they are goldfish.
I take my attention from the lake and look towards the sky, taking in the sunlight.
All of this feels...right. Being here, working at the coffeeshop.
Not that I wasn't happy at home but I felt a little trapped and like I couldn't breathe anymore. Here, away from home, all by myself I finally have time to figure out who I want to be and what I want to do with my life.
After a few more minutes of enjoying the sun, I get up and start walking again. There's energy inside of me that I want to put to use.
I look for a person that seems nice and ask for a swimming pool close by. They shake their head, telling me they don't know and I continue my way. I ask a few more people until one can finally give me an answer and I thank them before noting down that address as well.
Since I'm still new here, I use my phone to navigate me back to the hotel to get my swimsuit and towel and everything I need before I make my way to the swimming pool.
I pay to enter and change into my swimsuit before getting into the water. It feels nice to be back in the water and I start to swim around the pool, totally in my zone.
Swimming always helped me clear my mind, the even movements and the feeling of flying through the water just make me feel calm.
I don't know how much time I spend in the water but eventually my arms feel week and I am getting exhausted.
So, I get out, shower quickly and get dressed. On my way back, I stop to buy some food for dinner.
When I arrive back at the hotel, it's 6 pm and I fall onto the bed, exhausted from all the walking around, work and training.
But after a few minutes I get back up to get my food and eat it. I also get my laptop out and search for a show to watch while eating.
In the end I decide on 'Friends' even though I watched it like a million times already but it's still great.
It stays on for the rest of the night and eventually I close the laptop and put it on my nightstand before falling asleep.
A/n: Yay, we got the job!
Also, what do you think about Jesse so far?
Ik he wasn't a huge part of this chapter but still. :)
Thanks for reading and love to you all

8 1771War of Seasons
Dorothea Atlin is the young, apathetic leader of the neutral territory of Sirpo, a chilly land hovering above the continuously warring factions of Sacer and Ghuria, whose devastating magics have ravaged their people and lands time and time again. Following a shocking attack and a cruel deception, Dorothea grows her conscience and takes up arms, using her self-destructive ability to manipulate the flow of time to ensure Sacer’s victory. Her growing understanding of war and the two factions is guided by Iree Nobelis, the determined and enthralling commander of Sacer’s forces, Ariana Kingfisher, a steely swordswoman of mixed Ghurian and Sacerian descent, and Rhys Tamlin, a kind but haunted soldier who goes to challenge Dorothea’s self-imposed celibacy and join her on a mutual journey of healing from the tragic legacies of the Atlin family and wars between the nations. Meanwhile, Dorothea’s only friend and deserter from the Sacerian military, Shark Olyen, returns to their homeland to face the family that disowned them and finds more than they bargained for in meeting Cerid Creed, a noble whose duty to his people clashes with his desires in romance and in life, much like Shark’s did long before. As their developing or preexisting loves and differing convictions on how to achieve peace create rifts between these major players, Dorothea experiences a personal revolution that leads her to fight for what she believes is right, no matter the cost. A slow-burn story that takes time setting up the psychology and motivations of characters for explosive payoff later down the line. Cover by Ben Arisson, who is also a wonderful author on this website!
