《Going back ✔️》Chapter 37: What if it's too late?

I exited the cell, feeling my blood boil and a hint of doubt creeping over me. What if the brat was telling the truth? What if her family weren't responsible for my family's death?

Well, there's only one way to find out.

I walked confidently to a black door behind which all the important files were kept. Sadly, there was a guard blocking it.

"Hey, Mr. John," he smiled lazily. I haven't told anyone my real surname.

"Gareth," I nodded, "I need to get in," I showed him a wad of cash and he raised his eyebrows appreciatively.

"You've got ten minutes," he said, taking the fake money.

"Thanks Gareth," I replied, going in. What an idiot.

I quickly went to the mahogany desk where a computer sat. Next to it was a grey filing cabinet. I sat at the desk and switched on the computer, surprised to find it had no password. I mean, I thought that the Mafia boss would think to protect their information. Then again, no one apart from me is stupid enough to go inside the office.

Hastily, I brought up the files from the year of the fire. I managed to locate the one I needed and opened it, my heart thudding painfully in anticipation.

"Holy guacamole," I muttered, my eyes going wide.

"I DON'T CARE IF HE'S STUCK IN TRAFFIC!" Mom yelled at the cowering man, "MY DAUGHTER IS MISSING SO TELL HIM TO HURRY THE HELL UP!"

"Y-yes Miss," he stammered, turning and running away as fast as possible.

"Calm down, Mom," I said, placing a hand on her shoulder- the bravest thing I've done so far. We were at home. My brothers and father were doing all they could to locate Iris.

Mom's countenance softened and she sighed, rubbing her temples, "maybe I was a bit harsh on him. Have you questioned the guests yet?"

"Dad is doing it right now," I replied.

"I don't see what the fuss is all about," West declared from his place on the couch, "so the little brat is missing. Boo-hoo, she deserves it."

Mom's eyes darkened and I could feel my hand twitch towards my gun. I'm sure Mom would help me hide the body-

The next second, Mom had a dagger pointing under West's chin. He met her steely gaze, but I saw him flinch slightly.

"Let's get one thing straight, Richard," Mom spat his name out like it was poison, "that's my daughter you're talking about. I've held my tongue while you criticise everything and everyone. But if you say one word against my family, remember, I know how to hide a body," she dug the knife a little deeper against West's throat, drawing blood.

I heard clapping and whirled around to see my brothers. Oscar was clapping enthusiastically while the others were trying to hide a smile.

Mom smiled at them then glared at West, standing up, "I think you should go now," she snarled, leaving no room for argument. West sniffed contemptuously, but did as she asked.

Once he was gone, she turned to us, "any news?"

My brothers shook their heads sadly and I could feel my heart sink.

"Don't worry," Will said confidently, "we will find her."

But what if it's too late?

What felt like a couple minutes- when in reality, we're a couple of hours- later, I slowly opened my eyes and sat up.

"Hey," Alex smiled, looking as if he couldn't believe that I was really here.

"Hi," I mumbled, grinning back. Our kidnappers had been kind enough to install a small light in the room, washing the cell in a yellow glow.

"How have you been the last four years?" Alex asked jokingly.

I laughed lightly, "good, thanks. I'm living with my dad, stepmom, brothers and stepbrothers. It was tough and awkward at first, but I love them."

Alex beamed, "that's great Iris! I'm glad you got out of there."

"Yeah, so am I. I was quite shocked when I learned that Elise died. I mean, despite what she did, she was my mother."

Alex hummed in agreement and looked fondly at me, "I've missed you Rainbow."

"I've missed you too, Al," I hugged him and then leaned against the wall, "we're going to get out of here. Then you, Jax and I will be reunited and it'll be like the old times."

Alex held my hand, interlocking his fingers with mine, "I hope so, Rainbow."

The door opened and our heads snapped to it. A figure stood in the hallway. Their long hair tumbled down to just above their waist and they wore black trousers, a white blouse and a black jacket completed with black heeled boots. A mask covered their face and they stepped forward.

Instinctively, Alex and I jumped to our feet and backed away, still holding each other's hand. The figure paused and removed their mask.

A sense of dread settled in the pit of my stomach and spread throughout my body. My mouth felt as dry as the Sahara desert and Alex clutched my hand tighter. Tears blurred my vision, but I harshly blinked them away and focused on the person standing in front of me. A person who I would once have trusted with my life.
