《The Silence Within》Chapter 7

The week rolled by faster than Lola wished for. Before she knew it, it was Friday, a day she dreaded the most for the first time. Her grandmother had not allow her go to work. She had said she needed to stay in the kitchen with the cooks in order to supervise the cooking. Lola knew where that would lead to. When the guests talk about how delicious the food is, her grandmother would comment and praise her for the good cooking. But it was a lie. She does not know how to cook. It was something her mother never took serious when they were growing up. In fact, she would say she knows nothing about household chores. She had grown up with maids who did everything from cleaning to cooking. After grumbling, complaining, a series of sweet words and sweet smile from Rebecca and almost screaming due to frustration into her Euro size pillow, she stayed back home.

They lived in a storey mansion located in Ikoyi. It was owned by their father with one of the best and unique architecture that made it stand out among other houses. It was surrounded by trees, sea of green grasses including a garden that had always been tended to by gardeners. There were lot of bedrooms with each child having theirs except Taiwo and Kehinde who had chosen to stay in the same room. Everyone had their bedrooms decorated to their taste irrespective of what they wanted. It was one of the perks of being a billionaire's grandchild. The security was tight with guards and security cameras everywhere. The fence was not the kind to scale through. It was high, more than twelve feet with electric barb wires. They had maids at their service, ready to work and put everything in order. The maid had their uniform. An ankara sown into a knee length gown and the male servants wore buba and trousers. Very traditional.

The mansion had a well-equipped gym, a ball room, and five sitting rooms which vary in size and uses. There was a living room for private meetings, one which their father uses when he has meetings at home. At the back, was an outdoor pool, built on a plot and half. Inside, there was an indoor pool. Behind the house, water passed through making it possible to have the yachts parked there and watched by guards.

The maids had gotten into motion to make the house sparkling clean. Windows were wipes, floors were bleached, the curtains were changed, crystal master pieces glistened and the surroundings were trimmed and scoured to perfection.

While the preparation went on, one person was displeased, Cynthia. She had no choice but to give in. She does not know where this was leading to but she had a very bad feeling about this expected guests' visitation. The night before when her husband had come to see her before going to bed, she had tabled her problem down.

Nearly a decade ago, Cynthia and Richard stopped sharing beds and bedrooms. That was how bad their marriage had turned out to be. He cheated on her. He betrayed her and broke the trust she had for him. It left their marriage feeble. Days rolled by with arguments that made the children scared. He was not resentful which hurt her the most. She was a rich and successful woman who does not need her husband's money for any reason but she yearned for one thing throughout that time, the man she fell in love with, not the one she had grown to loathe. She wanted to leave but she knew the effect of a broken home on children. With no choice, she stayed back for her children but Richard can't say a word without getting rebuffed. They argue and fight and virtually everything and most times, they barely talk to each other.

Sarah rushed out of her room, full of worry and fear. Her best friend was missing. She had left Daisy on the bed to get something that would keep her mouth busy from the kitchen. Sarah returned back to the room to find Daisy missing.

"Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!" She yelled out, eyes searching the hallway. She heard no sound that's familiar to Daisy's and caught no sight of her. Her heart sank, apprehension intensifying. Where can she be?

Music, loud rock and roll, rang from the walls of one of the rooms. She turned her attention to the room then rushed to the door.

"Sarah!" Samson shouted, the loud music halting. "Why will you barge into my room like that?"

"Have you seen Daisy?" She asked, chest falling and rising. Her wide eyes scanned the room then fell on her displeased twin.

"No!" Samson replied brusquely. "It's not like I like her anyway" He shrugged then turned back to his ipad.

"Oh my God! I can't find her!" She slammed a flawless hand on her forehead.

"What should I do then? She can't go anywhere! She will be in the house! Get out!" He waved a dismissing hand.

"I will but until I search your room" Sarah marched further into the room, her heels clicking the floor.

He blocked her. "You are not going anywhere. She is not here. She knows I do not like her so she won't come here"

"You are the worst twin brother ever!" Sarah cried out.

"I know" His expression did not flinch. "Now leave my room. I am busy" Samson pointed a finger at the door.

"Busy fixing a hopeless future! You won't be a rapper! Let that stick to your thick skull! You sing the worst songs ever!" She threw her chin in the air and walked out.

Somebody breezed past Sarah as she walked to the staircase, pushing her aside a bit. She let out an alarming scream using the wallpaper to support her unbalanced body. She whipped her head up to see who it was. It was Mofe. His retreating back told her.

"You asshole!" She stood up, throwing her sleek hair from her face. "Have you seen Daisy?" She got no reply except the pounding of feet.

Mofe raced through the hallway, passed doors. Magnum opus, family pictures, affluent sculptures and portraits lined the plush walls of the hallway. Taiwo and Kehinde who prepared for the upcoming event walked out of their room. They huffed then went back in with Taiwo muttering idiot under her breath. They were scared when they heard the thundering against the floor.

Mofe jumped over the china vase along the hallway trying to practice his high jump over his mother's most valued vase before skidding down the spiral staircase using the white baluster carved out of metal into the living room. When the glass door of the foyer flew back, he met Toke and her husband.

"Sister Toke" Mofe beamed crushing the pregnant lady into a hug.

"Hey baby boy, how have you been?" Toke beamed running a hand through his afro.

"Doing great! So did you get my message?" He gave a sheepish grin.

"What message?" A blank and confused looked marred Toke's face.

He pouted "Sister Toke"

"Alright!" Toke threw up her hands. "I did. You will get it"

After exchanging pleasantries, the three strolled into the living room.

"I told you Nathan. I needed to rest in the car before getting down. My back hurts" Toke complained to her husband.

"Sorry dear" he gave her a smile getting hold of her hand.

"Daisy!" Sarah, bent over the baluster that looks into the massive living room, screamed. Her tiny voice resonated through the large house.

"Oh my God Sarah!" Cynthia swept into the living area from the back leaving the French doors Opened. "Why are you shouting?" She threw Sarah an irritated look.

"I can't find Daisy" Sarah held out a hand with a little roll of her eyes.

"So what? She can't run away. You will find her" She threw a nonchalant shrug and hand. "Stop being a nuisance over some dog"

"She is not some dog, mummy. She is my best friend. She is one in a million. My baby!" Sarah began to walk to the staircase.

The little bark came from one side of the living room. Sarah saw the little white fur with the pink ribbon holding the hair in between her ears.

"Daisy!" A happy screeched left Sarah's lips before she rushed down the staircase. The dog sprinted toward Sarah, happy barks leaving her lips.

"Toke!" Cynthia shouted with thrill at the sight of her daughter.

"Mummy" Toke squealed before rushing to her mother.

"Stop! Stop there!" Cynthia gave an alarming cry. Shocked, Toke paused. "Do not run! You are too heavy for that" Cynthia warned before she pulled her daughter into a gentle hug. "How are you?"

"God mummy, you are so dramatic. I am fine and healthy. Look at me" She twirled in her dress. "Pregnancy looks good on me"

"It sure does. How's my grandchild" she placed a hand over Toke's baby bump.

"He kicked mummy" Toke said thrilled with excitement.

"Really? Wow!"

"Yes, last night. It was a good feeling. You have to see how Nathan was" She looked at her husband over her shoulder. Sarah clung to his arm like a glue, her dog in her other arm.

"This is great! You shall deliver safely in Jesus name"

"Amen. Where is everyone?" her damp eyes gazed around.

"Your father and grandfather are in your father's study. Miracle is yet to arrive from work. I gave him a call. He is on his way. I told him not to bring one of those hookers he calls his girlfriends. If he can't find a woman from a well to do home, then he should forget bringing anyone for dinner or any function. Lola is in the kitchen sulking. Your grandmother was adamant about her staying there even though she would be useless"

"I bet she's seated on the counter, scrolling through her phone" Toke laughed.

"You know your sister well"

"When are our guests arriving?" Cynthia glanced at the antique wall clock of the living room.

"By seven. I have a feeling that there's more to this dinner"

"I believe it is just a simple dinner"

"Simple dinner?" Cynthia sneered.

"Come on mummy. Don't stress yourself about it. Now look at this ring I got few days ago" she showed her mother the twenty karat gold ring on her middle finger

"Ladies and gentlemen" Kehinde shouted as she descended the flight of them into the living room getting everyone's attention while her twin walked by her side. "I present to you sister Shola and her beloved husband Brother Dolapo with my lovely niece and nephew, Nifemi and Olamide"

"Granny" Nifemi and Olamide screeched rushing to their grandmother's Opened arms.

The exchange of pleasantries went on for a while. Damijo and Richard walked down to a noisy household. It was the way it had always been whenever everyone was around. Having ten children was Cynthia's choice. She had been the only child of her parents and when she got married, she had no plan to have just a child or two or three. She wanted to have as much as she could. She might have conceived again after Mofe's birth but the doctor had warned her not to try it again. She wanted many. Taking care of them was no big deal. There was money, plenty money. There always had been money. Her husband was rich. She was rich.

When Lola walked out from the high-class kitchen sulking and grumbling for staying back home when she got work to do, Makinde and his wife arrived. Amarachi, the pretty igbo lady from the eastern part of Nigeria. Her tribe had been the reason Cynthia had not fully blessed Makinde's marriage to her. She had no choice. After pretending many times to be sick from heart attack to prevent the marriage from happening and many fights with her son over a girl she would never consider her daughter in law, she agreed grudgingly. To worsen it, she girl was from some low class family. Her family has no name. It was what Cynthia kept repeating and pointing out the most.

The girl's mother, Chizoba, and Cynthia were like oil and water. Not for once had they never clicked except fight when they meet. On the wedding day, arguments had happened leading to the delay of many things. Cynthia wanted things this way. Chizoba wanted things that way. It had taken a lot of intervention before they could agree over a thing without an argument.

"How is my grandchild?" Cynthia asked a pregnant Amarachi when they met with her voice colder than ice and looks stonier than rock.

"It is fine" Amarachi placed her hand over her stomach. She was due to put to bed anytime soon.

"OK" she said, head raised high as she eyed the lady. Amarachi still gave her a smile which she had not returned. "Abigail" she called the child that held her Amarachi's hand, a smile forming over Cynthia's stoic look. Her eyes softened. "Come here, Oluwashikemi" she Opened her arms. The kid sauntered from Amarachi into her grandmother's opened arms.

Amarachi watched the duo laugh and play. She does not mind. She really does not mind if her mother in law has a natural dislike for her as long as it's not passed down to her children. That's enough for her.
