《The Silence Within》Chapter 3

They ran their curious eyes over them with an irritated look. The lady radiated wealth. From the way she sat, to the way she talked and moved her body, she was someone who knew nothing but money. Her English sounded so different with an accent that was a mixture of Nigerian and something else. She had a flawless skin, the type that had been pampered by lots of expensive treatments but at the moment, the pampered skin had fingernails mark, the aftermath of a brawl with the older woman beside her.

Her feminine perfume, a mixture of flowers, wafted across the air of the stuffy police station. There was something he disliked about her. The arrogance she displayed and sharpness of her tongue. It showed she was disrespectful. He won't blame her. She seemed to be from a very affluent home. Most of those children are spoilt and disrespectful. He crunched his flat nose in disgust. He hated them. They knew nothing about poverty or what it means not to have something and she was a perfect example. Fola sighed hard as he watched the young lady shout at the inspector whose fury was evident on his face.

He shifted his gaze to the older woman with a swollen eye. The poor woman had messed with the wrong lady. The woman winced each time she kept the iced water on the black eye. The spoilt brat had hit her hard on the face when the woman hit her.

"She be ajebo" Fola said to his partner, Daniel, as he accessed the young lady who had caused nothing but nuisance in the police station for the past few minutes she had been there.

"But hin be like say she dey sharp. She no be mumu" Daniel replied as he wrote on the paper he had laid out in front of him.

"See how she dey shout for oga. She clean sha. The babe fine. She dey rich"

"Na slay mama na" His eyes lingered on her. She wore high waist denim shorts and white off shoulder. Her white sneakers, hair and makeup justified his thinking "See how she dey now and the man" the second constable nodded his head with pity at the man. "How woman go beat old woman so te hin give am black eye?"

"Young lady!" The inspector shouted authoritatively unable to hold in his anger.

"Lola!" she corrected ferociously. "My name is Lola! Aralola!"

"Do I look like I care? Be careful of what you spew because I won't hesitate to put you behind bars" he threatened.

"Behind bars?" she sneered with an arrogant look. A smirk painted her face with an evil glint in her eyes "You should be the careful one. Lay a hand on me and you will lose your job as a policeman" her voice grew calm.

"Please, put her behind bars! Look at what she had done to me. She hit me!" The woman shouted, pleadingly.

"Will you shut up?" Lola barked. "Look at me. I am also a mess" She pointed at her look. Her hair had become a tangle mess. There was fingernails mark on her neck and her makeup was anything near perfect because of sweat.

"This is my final warning to you, young lady" the inspector warned.

The inspector was a stout man with a belly bigger than that of a nine month old pregnant woman. He had little tribal marks on his cheeks and in an unkempt uniform.

"Hold back your warning. It is doing nothing but just adding to my fury. I want her behind bars!" she shouted frustrated. "She hit my baby and I with her filthy car. She beat me with her filthy hands. Look at me! I am a mess"

"Will you stop shouting?" the woman next to her shouted. She flinched at the sudden pain that shot through her when she shouted. "You are giving me a headache!"

"The black eye is not enough. You want the left eye to be the same right?"

Over the past few minutes they had been in the police station, there had been nothing but argument and nuisance. The two defendants had done nothing but shout and argue. The inspector had tried calming them down but nothing lessened the rage and resentment they had against one another.

"Who are you to give such an order" the woman shot at her.

"Someone who can make you a poor woman in minutes" She snapped her finger. "All this your garagara will end in less than ten minutes if I make a single call. Do you know who I am?"

"You are so full of yourself" she lifted the ice from her eye. "Do you think the world revolve around you?"

"You know nothing about me" she turned to the inspector. "You saw my car. She jammed into it. She ruined my baby" she whined at the end in a tone that displeased the female defendant.

"You did not move when other cars were moving. It was not my fault"

"No one was moving. It was a standstill" she balled her fist, looking at the woman. "You could have been patient instead of trying to squeeze in between cars"

"Now you are turning the table abi? I have a meeting to be at to just end up with a brat like you"

"If I am a brat then you are a nuisance" If eyes were a weapon, she would be dead. "You idiot!" she voiced out leaning into her seat to cross her legs at her ankles. "What a way to ruin my day" she flipped her hair, glossy caramel brown weave, an expensive one she had changed after unravelling the tiny braids.

"Lola" a voice called.

She whirled around to the sound of the voice. Her sizzling eyes met cool familiar ones. A sigh of relieve left her lips and her tensed shoulder relaxed. By the entrance of the room, her elder sister stood as she watched her with eyes filled with disappointment. She looked smart in her trouser suit and her poise was elegant as always. When she walked into the room that reeked of sweat, she had everyone's attention, her pointed heels clicked the floor.

"Sister Shola" Lola stood up, her anger lessened at the sight of her elder sister. The corners of her plump lips curled up.

"Not again" Shola sighed walking up to her sister. "Good morning" she greeted the Inspector. "I am Barrister Shola Badmus, her sister" she threw a hard glare at her sister.

"I am going to file charges against your sister" the woman snorted.

"You can't instead you will end up behind bar" Lola barked. "You have more fault than I do" she pointed a finger at her.

"Not after the physical assault" a disgusted look marred her face. Lola's eyes sizzled. It took every composure she had not to smack her palm across the old lady's face.

"You are more stupid than I thought. Filing a case of physical assault against me in Nigeria. It will surprise you that you will be the one to end up behind those bars in few minutes"

"Lola" Shola called with a silent warning in her voice. "Sorry, what's your name ma?" her voice was soft and pleading as she looked at the injured woman. She grinded her teeth. She would pull Lola's ears until she feels as if they want to fall off when they step out. This was her second time in a place she dread the most within a week all because of an unpleasant child she had for a sister.

"Mrs Adeyemo"

"I am sorry ma. I apologise on her behalf" she apologised.

"I don't need your apology. I want an apology from her" she pointed at Lola,

"You won't get it until you apologise. You jammed into my car! I am the victim!" Lola growled, her fist clenched next to her thighs.

"It is not only your car that was affected. The damage on my car is worse than yours"

"That's a good thing. You can use this money" she reached into her bag and brought out some cash. "To repair it" she threw the money at her face.

"Lola!" Shola snapped. How can someone disrespect money this way? "Are you nuts? What nonsense is this?"

"She needs it. Can't you see it?"

"Don't say a word until I am done" she glowered at her younger sister.

She wondered how her sister did it but it was not what she wanted. She wanted that idiot behind bars. That's what will give her more relieve. The fact that she was out of that hell hole called police station was easing. The place ponged of wetness. She knew she could end things amicably without her sister coming to her rescue but she was not ready to give those corrupted police officers money.

Lola walked behind her elder sister more confident than she was, her nose in the air and shoulders high. An apology was the last thing she thought about and it was what Shola expected from her. What swirled in Lola's head was the image of her ruined car. Before her father would leave money for repair, she had a lot of begging to do. Even though her father will give her the money without any problem, her mother will be against it. It was a second time she had ruined her car that way. The first had ran into a pole. She sighed for the umpteenth time when they sat inside her sister's white G-wagon.

"An apology should not be too heavy for your lips to say, Lola" Shola's voice was dangerously low. She leaned back into her seat with no urge to bring the car to life.

"Why should I apologise?" Came the nonchalant question from Lola's lips, her palms opened.

"You are asking me that, Lola? You are asking me?" Shola flipped. "You know what you had done. You ended up in the police station again, Lola. A week interval from your last visit. I was working when you called"

"It was not my mistake. She jammed my car" She repeated the words that irked her sister again then leaned into her seat and folded her arms around her chest.

"Don't say those words again. They peeve me! Can you admit your mistake just for once?"

"Why should I admit something that was not my doing? I was the victim. My car was ruined. Look at me. She beat me up. What will I say to mommy and daddy? My car is wrecked and it is not my fault"

"You gave her a black eye"

"That's why there is a hospital" she replied negligently.

"That woman should be age mates with our mother"

"And so?"

Shola gazed at her. There was nothing to say but she just stared at her annoying younger sister. Without a word coming from her lips, she turned the engine to life.
